Excellent design reference.......2000-05-05
This book gives an incredible overview of Soviet commercial design with tons of great color pages covering everything from package design, logos, posters, to general advertising. I would highly recommend it to design professionals and art students. The design inside has been ripped off a lot over the last few years, but it's still a great resource for timeless ideas and wonderful design.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent reference.......2007-01-16
This book is a serious read. Mr. Resh covers every possible angle of hydroponic production, from all around the globe. My personal involvement in Hydro is as a hobby, but I really enjoy the in depth discussions as well as the pictures of systems acutally in use. The majority of focus is on commercial application, but I have gleaned tons of ideas from this book. I showed it to the local hydro shop, and they got a store copy that is quickly becoming tattered due to hard and frequent use.
Hydroponic Food Production.......2000-08-20
Outstanding book full of usefull information and data in setting up and operation of large scale hydroponics farms but the information will aid the smaller scale operations this book is a must for the smaller greenhouse hydroponic grower.
Hydroponic Food production.......2000-08-09
I found this book to be excellently written with informative, down to earth material, photo's and illustrations of most of the newer hydroponic systems that are now being used in commercial applications.
I got the impression that the author has a lot of background experience and knows the hydroponic field very well.
Excellent-pity illustrations are in black and white........1999-05-05
I was convinced to buy this book by your reader reviews but I was disappointed to receive a black and white version (according to your comment on a previous reader's review only an older out of print version comes in b&w).Content is, however,excellent-very comprehensive and well worth having!

Book Description
This is a critical edition of the Latin text of Book I of the De Institutione Feminae Christianae of Juan Luis Vives together with facing English translation. The work was written in 1523 and dedicated to Catherine of Aragon for the instruction of her daughter Princess Mary. It was later thoroughly revised and the changes introduced are of great interest for the history of the text. The De Institutione is considered to be the most important treatise of the Renaissance on the education of women, cited and imitated throughout the sixteenth century. Although Vives sometimes betrays traditional attitudes towards the status of women, he gives expression to many liberalizing humanistic ideas. In all, it is a clear public acknowledgment of women's probity, dignity and capability for learning.

Book Description
This handy little book shows how easy it is to tap into the natural "drug store" in one's body - containing adrenaline, serotonin, cortisol, melatonin, and insulin - and activate internal feel-good chemistry.
Adrenaline Junkies and Serotonin Seekers details the common chemical imbalances that can make people feel depressed, anxious, or exhausted. Charts and illustrations are combined with jargon-free text to explain the science behind body chemistry so people can easily identify their personal chemical profiles.
The book offers specific programs to counter the imbalances. By applying proper sleep patterns, diet variations, exercise regimens, mental exercises, and stress controls for their specific chemical profile, readers will be able to gain control of their body and emotions and begin performing at their peak level every day.
Customer Reviews:
A little too simple.......2005-07-19
The title phrases are two of 5 hormone 'types'. The type scheme include:
Adrenaline junkies
Serotonin seekers
Cranky on cortisol
Short on melatonin (insomnia)
Sugar Sensitive (insulin issues)
To determine their 'type', the reader is invited to take a battery of tests. Do you feel groggy in the morning? Do you think loving thoughts about your kids while driving home, then snap at them upon arrival? Based on the results, a variety of diet and lifestyle options are suggested.
I wasn't convinced the author's battery of tests were particularly helpful. Biometrics (measuring insulin and cortisol levels, for example) are much more informative. Additionally, the subject hormones all work together. One can't change one without having an impact on the others. These interactions are never explored.
If you are interested in how these hormones interact, with a view towards balance, take a look at 'The Age-Free Zone' by Barry Sears.
Chemistry Project Book Review.......2005-01-19
Adrenaline Junkies and Serotonin Seekers, is about "balancing your brain chemistry to maximize energy, stamina, mental sharpness, and emotional well-being." The science behind body chemistry is thoroughly explained enabling readers to easily be able to gain control of their bodies and emotions. The illustrations are very helpful in understanding these explanations. Opposed to just text, the author, Matt Church, also includes many charts, tables, and even quizzes. He uses these to help readers correct any chemical imbalances that can make them depressed, exhausted, etc.
Unfortunately, I believe that a lot of people need to read this book. It is very informative, and can be helpful to a lot of people. It gives a lot of interesting facts about body chemistry that can improve a person's daily life.

Saberhagen Writes Excellantly!.......2002-06-26
I have read and re-read all of Saberhagen's books in the Dracula series, and this book, along with exceptional The Dracula Tapes, are easily my favorites. Saberhagen brilliantly paints a truly loathsome character in Radu, Vlad Dracula's sadistic little brother. But one HAS TO READ *ALL* THE BOOKS IN THE SERIES TO GET THE FULL ENJOYMENT FROM THIS NOVEL! It stands alone, as a great novel, but, trust me, you'll understand more if you've read the other books in the series. It may not be the most well-edited book, but it is full of well-researched history, as are the other novels in this series, and a delightful humor.
Saberhagen weaves all sorts of figures in history into this novel, such as the Marquis de Sade, a "friend" of Radu, and The Scarlet Pimpernel. This is a enchanting and innovative tale, particularly how they manage to save the Philip Radcliffe in the time of the French Revolution. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone that loves history, or even vampires. And read the other books in The Dracula Series, too, including the soon-to-come A Coldness in the Blood!
And I thought Anne Rice's new stuff was bad..........2002-04-30
I, too, was intrigued by the idea of a vampire story set amongst one of my favorite historical periods, the French Revolution. What I got was a very poorly plotted story full of inconsequential characters that doesn't really start to get anywhere until exactly halfway through when we are finally introduced to the character whose actions are the very reason this story is happening in the first place. Historical personages are thrown in so half assed I almost feel embarrased for them. I haven't read any of Saberhagen's other Dracula books, and I'm sorry to say I'm in no great hurry to do so.
A confusing disappointment.......2002-03-07
The first book of Saberhagen's Dracula series, _The Dracula Tapes_, was a great read; the tale of Dracula, lifted from Bram Stoker's famous book, as told by the Count himself, and oh, had he been misunderstood. Further books on the series never quite lived up to the first one, but were reasonably good reads...
Until this one. "A Sharpness on the Neck" is very disappointing. The premise itself is on par with other books on the series: bound by his honor, Vlad Dracula must protect a descendant of a friend from a murderous vampire, Vlad's brother Radu. In the process, the descendant is introduced to the world of vampires, and we are to get to know some other part of Vlad's story; this time, the period in the final decades of the eighteenth century, during the French Revolution, and more specifically, the Terror.
Unfortunately, the book never quite lives up to the reasonable premise. The narration bounces back and forth between first person and third person, often without the benefit of a break to indicate a change has occurred. Although some characters are meant to be in disguise, their right name pops back and forth at inopportune moments. The narration is overly confusing, the plotting badly done. Having spent some time in the previous books on the series "explaining" that the invitation requirement for a vampire to enter a dwelling has more to do with a psychological hangup on Vlad's part than the nature of vampirism, this is entirely discarded in this book in favor of the traditional meaning.
The book is unpolished, rushed, and poorly written.
It seems that the book is merely an excuse for Saberhagen to make inside jokes and references to other classic literature and history about the period. Percy Blakeney (better known as The Scarlet Pimpernel) makes a useless background appearance. So do the main characters from Dickens' _A Tale of Two Cities_. Superfluous references to a young Auguste Dupin, Madame Toussaud, and others, pepper the book. But rather than being clever, they are tiresome, cumbersome, and silly. Not recommended.
He just doesn't seem to get anywhere..........2001-12-21
Including this one, I've read three of Saberhagen's Dracula books, waiting for some moment when I feel as if the series (or just one of the individual books) has achieved some kind of point or relevance. Hasn't happened.
Saberhagen's writing is sluggish, heavy on irrelevant action (or rather non-action), without offering much of interest in return. Though he previously managed an almost engaging Sherlock Holmes, his characters here are paper-thin, and some lapse at times into fairly unsavory behavior.
Technically he's not a bad writer, but I have a feeling as if he's been persisting for years in a subject that is out of his element. There are far more intuitive and capable writers of vampire fiction, especially when it comes to "good" vampires. (I highly recommend P. N. Elrod as one who excels in the field.)
Another, personal issue. I happen to enjoy well-written vampire protagonists as much as anyone--but I'm a big fan of Bram Stoker's vampire hunter Van Helsing, and when modern authors base their works on Stoker's, I'm always dismayed to find that character maligned. Saberhagen has had a habit of doing so... though admittedly no worse than many other writers who romanticize vampires.
At any rate, this is probably the last of Saberhagen's books that I'm going to bother with.
Two of my favorite subjects.......2000-10-11
As a fan of most fiction related to the French Revolution and as a seeker of the perfect Dracula, I was pleasantly surprised that a book I was drawn to more by the guillotine than the vampires may wind up leading me to my answer. I may be at somewhat of an advantage, already being familiar with the historical references and other literary characters, but I find this to be a highly skilled connection of different worlds of fact and fiction. I am highly dissapointed that several books in the series seem to be out of print, although I know they will not share the setting that attracted my attention.

Book Description
In 1998, my wife and I, with amiable agreement, filed for divorce. Thirty days later we attended a seven-minute hearing that undid 28 years, and then went our separate ways. My way took me through a desert, trying to avoid admitting how deeply the pain went. My congregation stuck by me. Libby, my therapist, didn't let me get away with anything. She, along with those who stayed close to me, was right: healing takes time. As the manuscript grew, I asked friends to read it. After I read "Looking East" during the Island Institute's 1998 Sitka Symposium, Carolyn Servid, institute co-director, asked to publish the story in Connotations, the institute's journal. It appeared in the Summer 1998 edition. (The story came first, written the weekend we decided to get the divorce, journals next, the rest of the poems and the other two stories followed.) What a tragedy to experience this grief and not learn from it, to have so many people touch my life and not be changed. My prayer is that someone experiencing a sharpness of grief will know I understand. I pray that God gives them courage to walk through their wilderness into renewal. It is not fun. It is hard work. It is worth every ounce of sweat, each drop of blood, each emotion admitted, and every honest word spoken or written. Now, today,. looking east into another sunrise, I see a blessed journey. Joy comes in the mourning and in the morning.

A Journey Unwanted... A Companion Most Needed.......2006-03-15
I have been sitting on this review for a while. It has been in my head, but unwritten. At least on paper. I think I haven't written it down, because that would mean this book has struck a cord with me. I don't think I wanted it to. I wasn't there yet.
Yet, like a good companion, this book, its author, and the poems that it contains, walked with me as I came to realizations about my own marriage. And how that marriage had gone from failing, to death.
I didn't want to see this. I don't think I had eyes to see this. And I know, for absolute, that I didn't have words for this.
Yet, I found my words. Words written by another person. Contained in someone else's book.
But they were my words. You know you find good writing, especially good poetry, when you read one and you think, "Was he following me?" You check the date, and realize it was written before you walk this journey of yours.
Yet, this is the beauty and joy of the written word. It can be your companion.
If you struggle with divorce. If you sense the death of a marriage. Or if you are need of healing of any type, pick up this collection of poems.
Let Jim Drury's words speak the words your soul longs to say.
Heart Wrenching Comfort.......2005-08-05
I discovered A Sharpness of Grief on a Saturday afternoon and ended up reading it cover-to-cover after dinner that same night. Reading poetry cover-to-cover isn't necessarily the best way to absorb it, but each poem opened a stuck door for me a little bit more so I had to keep going. Drury leads us from the break up of his 30-year marriage through his path of grief as he learned to accept his loss. The honesty and insight about yearning for a reconciliation and accepting his role without completely beating himself to death (literally), and riding with Drury on a grief-recovery rollercoaster was heart-wrenching and comforting at the same time.
I'll go back to many of the poems over time. I've already prescribed Drury's poem "I Confess" for myself and have been letting it gently remind me of a perspective on the two sides of a failed relationship that I lose sight of sometimes. On a different rollercoaster, or maybe a train, the poem "Wages of Sin" is another I've gone back over for sense of "been there and can do it better next time".
This is a refreshing perspective that takes away the poisonous finger-pointing aspect that can come with many break-ups and replaces it with honest struggles and growth.
Powerful.......2005-08-04
Reverend Drury has found the magical power of words to express his journey through a profound time of change in his life. These words take on meaning for the reader as well, as memories are called up and revisited while reading these passages. James invites us on his journey through change, and leaves us with hope at the end of the writing. This book has greatly added to my life by putting into words what not only I have experienced but has been experienced by so many of those I love. Bravo,Jim!
Drury's Book and Personal Healing.......2005-07-21
I strongly recommend Jim Drury's book, " A Sharpness of Grief " for anyone going through the grieving and healing processes following divorce. As a person who has been through those very dark days, and as a mediatior who works with divorceing couples, I can say that Jim indentifies the main challenges of dealing with the pain of divorce and does so with great eloquence!
Drury pulls no punches! He gets right to the heart of the issues.....and is scrupulously emotionally and intellectually honest about the whole thing. As a Lutheran pastor, Jim knows that at the heart of the matter is the necessity of confession and forgiveness...the "constant search to live forgiveness"...no easy task! He is not afraid to look the beast directly in the eye...to get at that deep sadness and grief he expresses so beautifully in " The Pictures On My Walls" Tough stuff, for sure!! Yet , Jim's book is not all doom and gloom. " Here's The Scene " is perhaps my favorite piece in the collection...absolutely priceless!!! How many times do we utter..." Damn! How did that happen?" Yes...this is the way it really is.
Drury's book was not , for me, a particularly easy read. There were several times when I had to get up and go for a long walk. This is a powerfull collection of poems and short stories. It is full of wisdom and honesty. I hope that it will be widely read. " A Sharpness of Grief " may indeed help each of us to achieve " a singleness of purpose...forgiveness fulfilled....mercy released."
You are so right, Jim...joy does indeed come in the mourning and in the morning! Thank you so very much for sharing your journey with all of us!!!

An Intimate Journey through Pain, Growth, and Healing.......2005-07-07
The termination of a marriage is a trauma similar to the death of a loved one. Divorce, in fact, is a death-- a death of a relationship but made complicated by that fact the other person is very much alive and we may bumb into them on occasion in unexpected places such as the such as the grocery store or the Post Office. While grieving such a loss is never easy, there are some situations that "turn up the volume," so to speak, such as being a pastor (with all the multi-faceted levels of expectations of perfection), or worse yet, being a pastor in a very small, isolated town, where really, everybody DOES know your name.
The author, James Drury, experienced the death of a long marriage while serving as a Lutheran pastor in a small, coastal village in Alaska. His journey of loss and grief, and eventual new birth and healing, are the backdrop to this wonderful collection of poems and stories.
Reading collection is akin to being invited to come along on a very personal journey. Many of the poems express a raw openness of fresh pain that is both unsettling and comforting. The honesty of the emotions expressed is unsettling in its directness, but it precisely that vulnerability that allows the reader to say, "I been there, I'm relived to know I'm not the only one." Some poems will speak in different ways to different people. "It was in the Paper Tonight", (pg. 55) explores the exposure and embarrassment of being a very public person in a very small town where your "dirty laundry" is hanging out for all to see. Pastors and other similar professions will immediately identify with that type of humility, but I would venture that people from any walk of life can relate to the experience of having your personal grief suddenly become more public than your had wished for.
That's the real power of this little collection, the ability to pull the reader into the experience of grief. I found reading these poems similar to listening in on a support group-the sharing there may not relate exactly to my personal experience, but I can identify my feelings in the feelings of the people who share, and through them, I can hopefully gain both comfort and strength.
The poem, "Broken Grace" (pg 53) contains these beautiful lines which summarize my experience reading this book: "My brokenness becomes God's gift/not judgment, in our shared wounds/the seeds of absolution..." Reverend Drury has blessed us with a personal, intimate gift by allowing us into his personal walk through a very dark time. His poems capture the rage, depression, confusion and dark humor, which are such a part of the grieving process, as well as the weariness, wariness and, ultimately, the joy, of the healing process. I applaud his efforts and am thankful for his invitation to walk with him part of the way through his journey of life. Thanks, Jim.
