This book has the most readable practicle information on every vegetable, herb or fruit I would ever grow plus many others. It covers some history of origin, varieties, cultivation, propagation, container and garden growing, harvesting & storage as well as uses both medicinal and culinary and also some recipies. I have not come across a more extensive book. My son & daughter both in their early 20's and just starting vege gardening use this as their bible. Well worth owning.

This book is wonderful! Every section gives you a in-depth overview of the vegetable, herb or fruit; detailing different varieties and how they rank in terms of taste and/or hardiness, how to propagate, grow, maintain, harvest and store. Plus gives tips of typical pests/diseases and how to avoid them. Very helpful are the "companion planting" paragraphs, explaining which plants do best next to each other. And to top it all off, each section includes a "culinary" and "medicinal" section, informing you of the best ways to use your crops once harvested. The pictures are beautiful and the wording is easy to understand and to the point. This is a great book for any gardener's reference shelf. Fun to read cover-to-cover, but set up so that you can dip in and out as you choose.

Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs is the best of the bunch. It gives a bounty of information on each of the many herbs listed: origin, uses, cultivation, lore, and much more. The illustrations, both drawings and color photos, are superb. The book does contain errors; it says, for example, that sassafras extracts are carcinogenic. But on the whole this book excels.

I felt sad that this information Was actually in hands of over million people,yet I know that Creator of Nature and it's powers in herbs will prove to be otherwise than described in this "book".
There's some good info in it,almost as if you give enough good to trick the public in beliving the bad.
It is as if it was written by the FDA agents themself or Allopathic Medicine so called "Modern medicine".As if it was written to "label" herbs for not more than decorative.
Almost Every herb that is truly amazing is somehow at the end of these authors "descriptions" darkened,and when you KNOW and PRACTICE herbalisam you know that iS not truth,and also I find it little "sticky" that there's a so called "miracle" drug out there that is a better choice?
Man will never conquer the VERY CREATOR OF NATURE AND IT'S POWER,and no greed will ever rule over it! So KNOW that there's NO miracle drug out there,Nature with it's powers teaches us PATIENCE and that everything needs IT'S Time to Heal. Decide for yourself,please on this book. I pray that you enrich yourself with many books out there that HONOR MOTHER NATURE FOR ALL IT'S WORTH!PEACE BE WITH YOU!

INTRODUCTION
Just off the coast of the South American mainland they were once part of, Trinidad and Tobago (usually shortened to T&T) form the southernmost islands of the Lesser Antilles chain and the most influential republic in the Eastern Caribbean. They are the most exciting, underexplored and uncontrived of Caribbean islands, rich in indigenous culture. A cultural pacemaker best known as the home and heart of West Indian Carnival, the nation can also boast having the most diverse and absorbing society in the region.
Trinidad and Tobago remain relatively inexpensive, and are well geared to independent travellers without being fully fledged tourist resorts. Natural reserves of gas and oil combined with a strong manufacturing industry have ensured economic independence, and you'll find the islands refreshingly unfettered by the pretensions of the tourist trade. Visitors are not corralled in all-inclusives or holed up on private beaches, and - though you could easily spend two weeks exploring seashores, which range from palm-lined white sand fringed by limpid waters to secluded, wave-whipped outcrops - you'll find there's far more to T&T than suntans and snorkelling.
These are among the richest destinations in the Caribbean for eco-tourism, combining the characteristic flora and fauna of the region with the wilder aspect of the South American mainland. You'd be hard pressed to come up with anywhere that offers such a variety of habitats in such a compact area (Trinidad covers no more than 4830 square kilometres, Tobago just 300). In Trinidad, you can hike through undisturbed tropical rainforest where towering canopies of mahogany and teak bedecked with lianas and epiphytic plants shelter red howler monkeys and ocelots. The wetlands and mangrove swamps harbour all manner of exotic wildlife, while leatherback turtles lay eggs on remote beaches. Huge blue emperor butterflies flit around the cool waters of innumerable inland rivers and waterfalls, and the birdwatching - with more than 430 brilliantly hued species - is among the world's best. Tobago is best known for its glorious beaches and stunning coral reefs, declared third best in the Caribbean by Jacques Cousteau and favoured by graceful seven-metre manta rays and shoals of technicolour tropical fish.
Equally absorbing are T&T's vital, crowded and dynamic towns and cities, unique showcases for the architectural, religious and cultural traditions of their cosmopolitan populations. Fretworked townhouses, Georgian-style mansions and barrack-house complexes built for plantation workers sit side by side with temples, mosques, Catholic cathedrals and Anglican churches. The varied ethnic groups brought to labour in the islands after the slaves there were freed in 1834 have given rise to a remarkably varied populace, hailing from India, China, Portugal and Syria as well as Africa, England, France and Spain. Though racial tensions are inevitably present, Trinbagonians (as they're collectively known) generally coexist with good humour, and are proud of the multiculturalism that has so enriched the life of the nation. Nowhere is this more visible than in a lively music scene that rivals even that of Jamaica. The steel drum was invented in the Port of Spain suburb of Laventille, while calypso, first developed in African communities, evolved into contemporary soca. That in turn has spawned the Indian-influenced chutney soca and the danceable beats and politically conscious lyrics of rapso.
Trinbagonians have a less harrowing past to contend with than many of their Caribbean neighbours. Neglected by the Spanish for most of their three centuries of rule, Trinidad experienced full-scale slavery for only fifty years, while the Dutch, French and English were too busy fighting over Tobago to dedicate it to the demands of King Sugar. Consequently, the national psyche is characterized by a strong sense of identity and a laid-back enjoyment of the good things in life, the latter best displayed in the local propensity for liming - taking time out to meet friends, talk and sink a Carib beer or some rum. Thirteen public holidays and numerous local festivals are mere limbering up for the republic's most famous party, the annual pre-Lenten Carnival, where the no-holds-barred debauchery of opening night Jouvert celebrations is followed by two days of pure joy as 5000-strong bands of intricately costumed revellers take to the streets in a celebration of life.

If you're going to Trinidad and Tobago, you simply MUST buy this book. It was a huge help while I was there, and I wouldn't have had nearly as much fun without it. Complete where where to stay, what to do, how to get there, where to catch the Maxis, taxis, etc...it is an incredibly helpful book. If you're going to T&T and not touring the country, you probably won't need a book. But if you want to see what T&T really has to offer, you've gotta pick this book up. I spent 9 days in the country with this book always at my side.

I am a Trinidadian living in the US for only four years now but this book was still very educational. The truth is, many parts of Trinidad are hard to navigate and few Trinidadians know the whole island.
In addition tourism is not as strongly encouraged as in other islands so it is hard to even get a good map of certain places.
The book presents a realistic, in depth perspective of all the hots spots and also the very obscure ones too.
A good book for the tourist, the local or the curious.

I am a Trinidadian who has been living abroad for the past eight years. I had not been back to Trinidad and Tobago since 1999 and was very much out of touch with what was current. I needed to organize a wedding in Trinidad from abroad and accomodation and activities for our foreign guests.
This was one of two guidebooks dedicated only to Trinidad and Tobago in my local bookstore. For this reason alone it already earns its stars because Trinidad and Tobago is not a popular tourist destination so there aren't many guides dedicated to the this country alone.
I thought the sections on accomodations in each locale was well organized and that the information about the places were mostly accurate. There were exhaustive descriptions of each area of Trinidad and Tobago which were very accurate along with long lists of what to see and do in each area and who to call for tours etc. It also contained long lists of bars, restaurants and clubs for all budgets and tastes.
I was very pleased with this book as it helped me immensly in planning of my wedding and accomodations and tours for my guests. Of course one should supplement the information in the book with searches on the internet for things like accomodations and tour guides as I was able to find some cheaper deals which were not included in the book. However, this is also the case with many other travel books on other places which I have visited where I have always found cheaper accomodations and tours etc. from the internet.
Could have been better organized.......2001-05-17
While the authors' passion for their subject is obvious, the information is very poorly organized and scattered all over the place. You have to sit down and read an entire chapter to find some important piece of information nestled away in it. There should be a clear table for T&T's complex transportation system, rather than confusing prose descriptions scattered all over the place. There should be an index of maps. The accommodation section is pretty good. There should be a better chapter on Carnival, with information on how to find the mas camps, buy tickets etc. The biggest gripe I have with it though is that transportation info, which is so crucial, is horribly presented.

A very nice book, with some great works and ideas using fax, but not exactly worth anything than saying "hum, that's cool, that's how they sent images before the Internet?". The book seem to be written decades ago.
There's fine and creative stuff - like the art created heating the paper instead of using the fax itself - but all in all it's not something so marvelous.

This book is fantastic. It just shows what you can do when you hijak the office fax machine and start getting creative with what seems at first to be a limited tool. The amazing range of designs and outstanding experiments in typography by contributors is something for designers and typograhers to draw upon as excellent inspiration. Highly recommended and a must have for your design book collection. Great eye candy.

This a great book for designers, typographers alike. This book shows just what can do when you hijak the office fax. The creativity shown by the contibutors to this book is outstanding. The wide and varied range of designs generated from their fax machine is something a lot of designers can look up to for creativity. I highly recommend this book. As with almost all TFH Publications, the books are woefully outdated and contain erroneous information. You are better off with the more recently published books by Barron's Educational Series or Howell House (John Wiley). TFH's book are a waste of money.

I was shocked at some of the unbelievably bad advice in this book. I worry about the woman who said she learned all she needed to know about her amazon - if she thinks she did she needs to find some real information so that she can care for her amazon correctly. Aside from the basic info that applies to most parrots there is so much bad info that it totally baffled me.

The book don't contain informations really useful: the text could refer to many other parrot species. The photographs are very good, but the legends are so incomplete that it is not possible to use the illustrations to identify the amazons species shown.

If you want an amazon that is well trained, healthy, and a great pet, this book is a must-have. It helped me understand everything I would have questioned before buying an amazon parrot. An all around excellent book!

Bad advice for parrot owners.......1999-01-06
As an avid parrot lover and owner of Cockatiels, Conures and Budgies, I love to read up all I can on them. However, this book does not offer good advise on any subject. The worse offense is the 'Nutrition' section. It tells you that 'along with a balanced seed diet...'. SEED DIET? Any bird fancier knows, and any wannabe bird owner should know that a seed diet is detrimental to a birds health and longevity! It states nothing about feeding them nutritious pellets or the different kinds of nutrition. I will say, that it does tell you to feed them fresh fruits and vegetables, but nothing about NOT feeding them avacados or chocolate or alcohol. There is alot of other erroneous material in this book. Although it is an overview and not in any way detailed, the information it gives is not, in anyway, going to be helpful to the beginner or novice bird owner. There are several other great books out there for the same price, but this is not one of them.
Also recommended: My Parrot, My Friend, Why Does My Bird Do That?, Conures, The Complete Book of Cockatiels, Cockatiels!

If you are oriented towards a quaker but don't know much about parrots yet, this book is the best to have a quick resume of everything is important to know. Takes little time to read it all but at the end your ideas will be a lot clearer, you'll know the essential to make your decision about getting a companion quaker or not; and in case you've decided to go for it, the essential to take care of your quaker and make it healthy and happy. In a second time you can deepen in your knowledge with more complex (but potentially confusing for a novice) books on the subject.
The text is quite objective about the level of attention and cares they require but... *beware*, the photos are so endearing that you are not much likely to resist the urge to get one of this cute and intelligent birds right away and start cuddling it...

The Tragedy of 9/11 in Picture Form.......2007-05-26
Former officer John Botte has done a wonderful job putting together images of the immediate aftermath of 9/11. The black-and-white photos show both the tragedy and hope of the people involved in the rescue -- and later, simply the clean-up -- of this horrific event.
The only thing I would have enjoyed more would have been captions for all of the photographs. As it stands, only about one in ten of the pictures has any type of explanation.

This book meets the criteria of the film noir movies of the 40's and 50's: oneiric, strange, erotic, ambivalent, and cruel. Well, not erotic. And unlike the films of those days, the pictures here, and the stories that they tell are true.
This is a book composed of pictures made in the days after 9/11. They were taken in black and white, and are somewhat grainy. The photographer, John Botte, a police detective and world-class photographer, was assigned by the police commissioner to document the aftermath at the World Trade Center. He was there, day after day, breathing the dust from the concrete, the insulation, and everything else - getting a lung condition that almost cost him his life.
Out of the thousands of photographs he too, he has selected this couple of hundred and created captions that sometimes explain, sometimes just comment on what is being pictured.
It is indeed a fitting AFTERMATH to 9/11.

Good book,mediocre mystery.......2007-08-14
This book has ALMOST everything I want in a good mystery.It starts off with a great opening paragraph, always a good sign in my opinion. The characters are engaging, and there is an interesting subject to learn about in the form of the archaeology and the academic atmosphere.
What is missing is a good mystery. There is only one suspect, and the denouement is completely predictable, a real disappointment. (It didn't help that the back of the book gave away too much of what little suspense there was.) I was enjoying the other aspects of the book so much I had looked forward to something a little cleverer.
This was Dana Cameron's first book, and if she can learn to plot a better mystery, I think she'll have a good future as a mystery writer. Otherwise, perhaps she should consider a different genre?
Archaeology, academia and murder.......2003-08-20
1st book in the Emma Fielding series, featuring female archaeologist turned amateur sleuth in New England
During an archaeological dig in Maine, archaeologist and professor Em encounters a thoroughly unpleasant man. After two murders, Em finds herself trying to clear her own name by finding out who was responsible. She's also worried about the effect the case may have when her position comes up for tenure at work. An above average amateur sleuth mystery with an engaging heroine who has both good and bad points in her personality, some other well portrayed characters, a twisty but satisfying plot, and a plausible device for having the character investigating murder.
New Entry into the Archeology type of Mystery.......2002-07-27
Emma Fielding is trying to find the site of Fort Providence. The Fort is the first known English settlement in the United States, predating Jamestown by a few years. By good chance the likely site is on the property of her old friend Pauline Westbrook who gives her blessing to the dig. Shortly after arrival Emma finds a body on the beach and is threatened by a pothunter with a gun. Strangely, a senior colleague with no interest in New England archeology stops by to examine the site. Worst of all, Pauline's house burns down with her in it. She had just changed her will to benefit Emma, so now she is a suspect. There are also alot of strange things going on in the anthropology department at her college. Emma has to get to the bottom of things, hopefully without adding her own corpse to the body count.
This is a very quick moving mystery. The author takes the reader into the world and work of the archeologist. She goes into just enough detail for illustration and not so much that you are bored. The characters are very vivid and there is alot of action. It wasn't too difficult to solve the mystery, she leaves alot of clues, but it is alot of fun getting to the solution.
stiff .... and I'm not talking about the bodies.......2002-06-26
Briliant, dedicated and driving me away from this author. This book was boring and was written in such a stiff manner that I nearly cried. The reviews led me to believe that this book was entertaining and wonderfully written. I have never read a fictional book about archeologist/detectives that was this humorless and this dull.
Ms. Cameron ... I suggest that you read Elizabeth Peters (her earlier ones) or Beverly Connor (who has an anthropology/archeology twist) to see how to combine archeology and murder into an enjoyable read. It did not have to be funny but at least it should have been interesting.
The Start of a Great Series.......2002-04-26
Emma Fielding is an archaeologist trying to succeed out of the shadow of her famous archaeologist grandfather. She's returned to her childhood home to work on a site that could guarantee her receiving tenure, but her discovery of a body could destroy that chance.
Soon more deaths follow, and although the sheriff believes she's innocent the town's suspicion of her grows. Emma must also deal with a cockey student worker, another sullen student who seems to wish that he were anywhere but on the site, and that student's father who sees Emma as a rival to his position at their college.
Emma herself is a wonderful character. She's impulsive, decisive, and survives the academic politics through her sardonic sense of humor. She also has a great relationship with her husband, who happens to be Asian (yet this is refreshingly treated matter-of-factly and never made an issue). Other characters are as well entertaining and believable, including an ancient medical examiner who ironically sees Emma as a morbid invader of the dead.
Emma's struggle to retain her sense of humor as well as retain control over her career at the college, her site, and the students who work it creates a fast-paced read that also provides a fascinating glimpse of an archaeological excavation. My only disappointment with this novel was that it had to end. I look forward to the next Emma Fielding mystery, Grave Consequences.

March 27, 2001 This is a review I wrote of Attie's Berlin photo project for New York Jewish Week in 1996. I thought his work was so wonderful when I saw it in a Manhattan gallery. I can't say it any better now than I did then. The new book contains examples from a few additional projects, which also are very moving. Time Exposures Resurrecting Berlin's Jews, in photographs.

If Berliners in the 1930s and '40s could have seen the future of the Jews projected on their streets, would they have stopped to look, to listen? Would more of them have resisted? The question is not a futile one in response to the remarkable work of photographer Shimon Attie, who projects images of Berlin's Jewish past onto the present void. One would have to be as unfeeling as Berlin's old stone walls not to see his images as warnings -- or, as the 37-year-old Californian puts it, "opportunities for reflection."
The project -- "Writing on the Wall: Projections in Berlin's Jewish Quarter" -- was born of Attie's own reflections. Attie, whose mother's family comes from Germany and father's from Syria, moved to Berlin in 1991. "It had to do with tracing my own roots somehow."
He found himself "walking the streets, looking everywhere and urgently asking myself, `Where are the missing people? What happened to them? Where did they go?' ''
Knowing the fate of European Jewry was not enough. In Germany, Attie "felt this presence but I couldn't see it. There was a discrepancy between what I felt and what I did not see."
That presence inspired him to create "Writing on the Wall," which appeared last fall at the Museum of Modern Art and the Jewish Museum; the title itself is a pointing finger. For a year, starting in September 1991, he projected slides of photographs of Jews in the 1920s and '30s onto buildings in East Berlin's Jewish quarter -- the "Scheunenviertel," or barn district -- matching as many as possible to their original sites (about 25 percent). He then photographed these projections, at night, exposing the film for three or four minutes, achieving an eerie glow.
The results are jarring: An elderly, bearded Jew of the 1930s looks out of a doorway in the '90s, as if startled by the photographer. A man in a hat stands looking into a Jewish bookstore, the black-and-white image rippling over a pocked stone facade. Jews long since turned to ashes stand again, their backs against a wall during a Gestapo roundup. A green beer bottle perches on the black-and-white windowsill of a Jewish-owned bird shop, its cages lining the sidewalk, standing out from the flat, dark surroundings. Projected onto a corner, Jewish newspapers on a stand announce the events of a day in 1935.
Witnesses of those days might pass have passed silently before such scenes and moved on. But today, one can look long and hard at frozen images of everyday life or of suffering that might have caused one to hurry past not so many years ago.
The photographs carry a message and they work as art, too: Attie's eye for composition and color is evident.
But powerful as his images are on the walls of a gallery, they are intended for the streets. It is unusual, Attie says, for his work to end up like this one has, as "a body of photos that stand on their own afterward." "The point was to intervene in a public space and project right onto those spaces," he says. "One can always overlay images in a darkroom or with a computer. But I wanted to touch those spaces."
And through them, to touch onlookers.
That contact is essential for Attie. With "Trains," a two-week installation on the anniversary of the Kristallnacht pogrom in 1993, Attie, collaborating with Mathias Maile, projected prewar portraits of Dresden Jews onto the trains, tracks and walls of that city's main train station.
People passing through were not left to guess whose faces these were or why they were here. Posters explained: "They are here to remind us of their fate, and to ask us to reflect on the current wave of hate sweeping Germany today."
Usually, Attie tries "to stay clear of having a very didactic position." But he admits that "those posters were hard-hitting and direct because I have learned from doing public projects in Germany that if you don't have a frontal, informative aspect, particularly on this topic, people will choose not to get it."
For example, passers-by asked if the faces were those of "pioneers who built the German railway in the 19th century. So that rather clear message [on the posters] in Dresden was simply because I felt I had no other choice."
Some Germans are uncomfortable with such reminders, notes Attie, who did receive some community support while working on the Berlin project. One "middle-aged fellow reacted emotionally, almost crying. He told me he had a Jewish grandfather who was deported to Auschwitz whom he had never known."
But another man poured water on Attie and his equipment from above. And "when I was projecting the image of the Hebraische Buchhandlung onto the original site, a 50-year-old man came running out ... shouting at me, `My father bought this house fair and square from Mr. Jacob in 1938.'
"I was stunned," says Attie, adding that TV cameras had been filming his work that evening and broadcast the confrontation nationwide.
"I pulled myself together and asked him, `Do you know what happened to this Mr. Jacob after 1938?' He said, `Why of course, he was a multi-millionaire and moved to New York.' As if that's what happened to them all as a matter of course.
"Another time somebody called the police when I was projecting an image on their building. They were afraid their neighbors would think they were Jewish."
Attie is disturbed by such "passive anti-Semitism" and by complaints he hears about the "flood of immigrants" coming into Germany: "They use that word `flood' a lot, when only 3 percent of Germany is foreign. "It is scary, yes of course. I have a lot of problems with being here. But I listen to the rhetoric of [the right wing in America] and get scared by this, too," he says, noting attacks on "the academic left" and the National Endowment for the Arts, which helped fund his Berlin and Dresden projects.
Ironically, Berlin has a seemingly insatiable appetite for exotic culture, even while refugees from other lands are not welcomed with open arms. For example, the current German craze over everything Jewish is "dead weird," Attie exclaims. "It's similar to Native Americans in the U.S. -- first you commit genocide and then the few survivors become exotic and trendy."
Standing under that Judeophilic spotlight, and turning his own beam on Germany's dark side, Attie says he nevertheless doesn't want to be "ghettoized" as a Holocaust artist. He's planning a project on the skies of Berlin and San Francisco: "They are radically different." And he hopes to do a project in New York on "untold histories" of immigration.
But his current focus, Europe of the 1940s, will take him to, among other places, Copenhagen, for an underwater installation on the rescue of Danish Jews; and to Amsterdam, for an installation on that city's hidden Jews, its resisters and collaborators.
There, Attie will project images onto the streets "from windows where Jews were hiding ... and the images will be moving across the street like a wandering gaze.
"There is another layer," notes Attie. "There are thousands of illegal immigrants in Amsterdam today who are hiding, afraid of being caught and deported. My project would include that aspect."
One can only hope that Attie's enlightening work will inspire witnesses to do more than simply cast a shadow in passing. ###
Moving...emotionally evocative...first-rate artistry.......1999-03-15
Shimon Attie uses ethereal-seeming projections of photo slides onto surfaces of water and buildings to give us a ghostly view of faces and facades now vanquished by history's most demonic event: the Holocaust. Althouh depicting the dead, the photographs in the book evoke immortality and force us once again to ask the question to which there is no answer. The effect these images have on me is at once shattering, the sense of loss being overwhelming, and reaffirming because they also pay such beautiful yet unsentimental homage to what is noble and good in us. In both design and execution, the book is truly formidable.

Jacob has taken a complicaged subject composed of many players and presents it in an easy-to-understand format while never swaying from academic/research discipline. I think this is a must have for all who care about or have an interest in environmental policy.

Sites Unseen challenges conventions for viewing and interpreting the landscape, using visual theory to move beyond traditional practices of describing and classifying objects to explore notions of audience and context. While other fields, such as art history and geography, have engaged poststructuralist theory to consider vision and representation, the application of such inquiry to the natural or built environment has lagged behind. This book, by treating landscape as a spatial, psychological, and sensory encounter, aims to bridge this gap, opening a new dialogue for discussing the landscape outside the boundaries of current art criticism and theory.
As the contributors reveal, the landscape is a widely adaptable medium that can be employed literally or metaphorically to convey personal or institutional ideologies. Walls, gates, churchyards, and arches become framing devices for a staged aesthetic experience or to suit a sociopolitical agenda. The optic stimulation of signs, symbols, bodies, and objects combines with physical acts of climbing and walking and sensory acts of touching, smelling, and hearing to evoke an overall “vision” of landscape.
Sites Unseen considers a variety of different perspectives, including ancient Roman visions of landscape, the framing techniques of a Moghul palace, and a contemporary case study of Christo's The Gates, as examples of human attempts to shape our sensory, cognitive, and emotional experiences in the landscape.
