Book Description

Today, native plants and water conservation are subjects of vital interest to cities, offices, homeowners, and agriculture alike, as all are affected by the growing shortage of water in the Intermountain region.

This comprehensive volume provides specific information about shrubs, trees, grasses, forbs, and cacti that are native to most states in the Intermountain West, and that can be used in landscaping to conserve water, reflect and preserve the region's landscape character, and help protect its ecological integrity. The book is an invaluable guide for the professional landscaper, horticulturist, and others in the Intermountain nursery industry, as well as for the student, general reader, gardener, and homeowner.

Water Wise is both convenient and comprehensive. The heart of the book presents hundreds of species, devoting a full page to each, with a description of appearance, habitat, landscape use, and other comments. Color photographs illustrate each plant described. A reader-friendly introduction provides important background on the ecology of the Intermountain West, along with full descriptions of native plant habitats and associations.

An accessible resource of accurate native plant information for all readers, Water Wise will be indispensable to professional landscapers and amateurs alike.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic addition to any library........2005-08-24

I work at the Rose Shop, a nursery and flower shop in Sandy, Utah. Drought resistant plants are one of our specialties. This book is fantastic for our area. I have as many books on this subject as I can find and this is my favorite. The price is a little higher but I highly recommend it. Don't wait on this one. It is well worth it. I couldn't put it down. I want a second copy for the nursery.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book but also very useful.......2005-07-22

This is a great coffee table book with gorgeous photographs but also one that is very usable in terms of moving toward a lawn/garden that is much more efficient in terms of water. Given that water will be a continuing concern in the West, it's a timely publication.

    Book Description

A product's environmental life cycle progresses from raw material extraction through production, use and finally to waste management. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) concerns the impact of a product on the environment. LCA's holistic perspective of products' environmental performance makes it a key concept for environmental management in industry as well as for environmental policy-making in government.

This book for environmental engineers and managers, ecodesigners and students presents a broad repertoire of LCA methological alternatives, their implications and their usefulness in many different applications such as product development, marketing, production and waste management.

Here environmental professionals can learn to interpret LCA methodology and results. The text also provides indepth coverage of LCA applications and offers many useful exercises to help prepare for the 10 major LCA exercise projects that are also included.

"Kanzi offers any number of crucial insights into the workings of the mind."––The New York Times Book Review

The remarkable story of the "talking" ape who is proving animals can think

Though he cannot physically speak, Kanzi understands an impressive amount of spoken English and communicates by punching symbols on a special keyboard. This book tells Kanzi's incredible story and explores its intriguing ramifications.

SUE SAVAGE-RUMBAUGH (Decatur, Georgia) is one of the world's leading ape-language researchers. ROGER LEWIN (Cambridge, Massachusetts) is the author of 12 books, including co-authorship of the best-selling Origins with Richard Leakey.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and Partly Convincing.......2006-07-26

This book makes plausible claims that some bonobos have learned to handle language in a way that is approximately as sophisticated as that of a two year old human. But their anecdotal evidence is somewhat hard to evaluate, and they didn't quite convince me that they were careful enough to rule out the possibility that their biases caused them to overestimate the sophistication of Kanzi's understanding.
The book is a bit long-winded about research that Savage-Rumbaugh did before working with Kanzi, and I was a bit disappointed that the book didn't provide more of the anecdote about Kanzi that made the book worth reading. But those anecdotes convinced me that much more is going on than some authors such as Pinker had led me to believe. I still hope for better evidence that will help clarify how much bonobos can understand. But that will be hard, and I don't know how it should be done.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking and charming.......2006-07-22

Animal intelligence is a huge interest of mine. I have read many books about the intelligence of primates, ocean mammals, and birds. This was one of my favorites. Although the author talks about her background and inspiration for a bit longer than I wanted to read at the beginning of the book, she really does a good job in describing her experiences with common and bonobo chimpanzees. The book is a pleasent read and describes both anectodal and scientific based experiences. The anecdotal bits really give you an insight into interactions with chimps and make you feel as if you know the individuals.

4 out of 5 stars This book should create earthquakes.......2005-01-03

As heartbreaking as it is eye-opening, this is an account of trying to conceptually reinsert humans into nature as much as it is the story of remarkable apes. Savage-Rumbaugh convincingly presents not only the bonobo Kanzi, but also his sister Panbanisha and the common chimpanzees Sherman and Austin, as persons in every sense but the arbitrary one of species. Tragically, the author provides a sense of the rich life our cousins lead beneath our noses at the precise moment any opportunity to know these people called apes in their own milieus is being exterminated. Read the book and pass it on.

5 out of 5 stars Important but Defensive.......2000-01-10

This is an important, if somewhat defensive book. I would have been much more interested to read more about Kanzi's day to day behavior and to see some actual scientific data instead of the story of the investigator's scientific publishing woes. Nevertheless, this book should be read widely and it's message that we humans are not as unique as we like to think needs careful consideration by all scientists and the general population.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding glimpse into the mind of our closest relative........1996-07-15

This wonderful book by Sue Savage-Rumbaugh and Roger Lewin forces the reader to reevaluate what it means to be human. Kanzi is a remarkable ape that has revolutionized our understanding of how our closest relatives think, how our common ancestors may have evolved, and why we may not be as different as once supposed. Roger and Sue's collaboration is very readable and conveys the excitement of Sue's scientific research and Kanzi's remarkable talents

                        Book Description

Clause Combination in Chinese is an abundantly documented study of composite sentences in Modern Chinese, their semantic properties and syntactic behaviour. It discusses the extent of language variation, the relation between synchrony and diachrony, the nature of grammaticalization, generality and gradience, and the non-uniqueness of syntactic analysis. The first part provides a new categorization of clause combinations and clause connectives. It introduces a class of connectives often combining units larger than the sentence. It also discusses the frequent non-use of clause connectives in Chinese composite sentences. The second part contains case studies of composite sentences with unusual semantic properties, among them a hitherto unrecognized pattern with no English counterpart: adverbial clauses expressing necessity. The book should be of interest to all students of Chinese linguistics and to general linguists concerned with sentence complexity.

                          arsenalpulp.com :

Disco Fury. Wrathchild. Bam-Bam Bambi. Ladies Choice. Backyard Billy. Cheerleader Melissa. Backwoods Militia. Gorgeous Michelle Starr. Welcome to the world of minor-league professional wrestling.

For the past two decades, wrestling has enjoyed a huge following that has grown from cult status to one of the entertainment world's most lucrative industries, over the years creating mega-stars out of wrestlers like Hulk Hogan, Chynna, and The Rock. But for every WWF superstar there are countless wanna-be's: pretenders to wrestling's various thrones who hurl, pounce, pin down, and act out in community halls and high school gymnasiums across North America, paying their dues while counting the days before they get the call to the big leagues.

One Ring Circus pays homage to the wrestling life: the sound and the fury heard amid the backdrop of household lightbulbs, screaming sound systems, and near-rabid fans who are often as colourful and outrageous as the wrestlers they clamour for. Author and photographer Brian Howell spent three years following the wrestling circuit, and his book of images and narratives perfectly captures the visceral energy of a remarkable, near-clandestine community whose artful and out-there theatrics—alive and well somewhere between here and Palookaville—is nothing short of inspirational.

Includes more than 100 black and white photographs.

                              Book Description

This volume is the first serious attempt to reconstruct Ding Ling's biography during the last few decades of her life. Most Westerners know her as a progressive woman writer who became famous during the May 4 Movement, championed its values in Yan'an and was criticized in the rectification campaigns that followed. Few know about her life afterward and the arduous process of rehabilitation. Here for the first time readers will learn about her life in the Great Northern Wasteland, solitary confinement in Qincheng prison, her visit to the United States, participation in the spiritual pollution campaign, and finally, the attempt to launch the journal China. All of this puts a new perspective on the life of one of China's most preeminent woman writers. Alber includes considerable new information about the rectification campaigns of the late fifties, supplemented by a series of interviews with the author and her contemporaries in the years 1980 and 1981, the very point when she began to turn "left" and to compromise her progressive beliefs. Ding Ling is generally acknowledged as a major figure of the May 4 Movement and an ardent admirer of Lu Xun. As such, the study sheds light on the legacy of China's greatest writer and the influence of Western ideals on contemporary Chinese literature. The primary audience is the educated reader who has an interest in contemporary Chinese literature and politics. It should be especially interesting to women, but the coverage is broad enough to include anyone interested in the intellectual history of China.

                                  Book Description

Hyman G. Rickover was not long removed from his Jewish roots in Poland when he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1922. After a respectable career spent mostly in unglamorous submarine and engineering billets, he took command of the U.S. Navy’s nuclear propulsion program and revived his career, being retired—involuntarily—some thirty years later in early 1982. He was not only the architect of the nuclear Navy but also its builder. In the process, he erected a network of power and influence that rivaled those who were elected to high office, and that protected him from them when his controversial methods became objectionable or, as critics would suggest, undermined the nation’s vital interests. Authors Thomas B. Allen and Norman Polmar, whose full-length biography of Rickover (in manuscript in 1981) was consulted by the Reagan Administration during the decision to remove him from active duty, are eminently qualified to write an essential treatment on the controversial genius of Admiral Rickover.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money and time to delve into Rickover's massive biographies, this small but excellent volume is the best you can find in order to have a complete picture of that important and much maligned personality of the 20th century. The authors cover every important detail of Rickover's life from his early years in Poland to the Annapolis Naval Academy, to World War II service and finally to the atomic branch of the legendary BuShips. Rickover's role in the development of the nuclear powered US Navy is fully precented, as well as his part in the civilian atomic industry and his machinations with the Congress. One of the most interesting chapters in my opinion was the one labelled "The Man" where Rickover's routine, habits and eccentricities make a really enoying read. The book contains some black and white photographs and also a reference to the more important dates of Rickover's life in chronological order.

This collection brings together the primary assessments of and reactions to the work and abiding influence of this revolutionary thinker, as well as the controversy he caused across many academic and political fields. The set includes early responses to Popper's work from sources difficult to obtain, and also two early reviews (by Carnap and Grelling) in translations specially prepared for this set. It is organized thematically, and includes a substantial new introduction by the editor.

From The Breast Cancer Book of Strength & Courage:
This was a special night, a night when I would share with the public one of the most private parts of my battle against breast cancer. This was the night I would share my story of hair loss. . . . Steve turned to me, the camera took a two shot, and there I was, for the first time in my life, anchoring a newscast without a strand of hair on my head.
It was quite a moment, for many reasons. Mainly, for me, it represented how far I'd come, and how much I'd grown! Cancer has become a journey of self-discovery that has helped me develop self-confidence and learn to love myself for myself.
                                    — Anchorwoman Leslie Mouton, who reported the news in Texas one night while bald due to chemotherapy treatments
Perhaps you or a loved one has recently heard the words, "You have breast cancer." Now what? How can you turn these fearful words into the first step on a journey of strength and healing? You'll discover that these words are more powerful than you think. So powerful that they can help you uncover a level of bravery and fortitude you might not feel is possible right now—one that lies deep within you, ready to emerge, ready to fight. You can transform your feelings of dread and despair into triumph.
Inside, you'll discover intimate first-person accounts of breast cancer survivors, women who confronted their diagnosis, clutched the thoughts, hopes, and encouragement already present in their daily lives, and embraced new ideas and old passions that helped sustain them during their struggle to restore their health.
These touching personal stories are told by special women who dug a little deeper to climb the biggest mountain of all. Their reassuring words are like having a welcome friend come to you in a moment of need—an invaluable source of strength, wisdom, love, and laughter. Page after page, you'll learn not only how to survive, but also how to forge a powerful and positive mental attitude.
An official book tie-in with Cure Breast Cancer, Inc. A portion of the royalties from this book will benefit breast cancer research, education, and outreach.

3 out of 5 stars Inspiring yes, helpful info - no.......2006-04-25

This book is inspiring and entertaining with uplifting stories of women affected by cancer. The only thing I found discouraging is that so many people facing cancer don't question some of the treatments they receive and do more digging into what is available, rather than just giving into the status quo and taking whatever their doctor gives them without question. I am an alternative medicine fan, so of course, I was hoping to see more accounts of women taking the initiative in this book and opting for more alternative treatments, which wasn't there. One reviewer mentioned breast cancer as possibly a "gift of higher understanding," which I just don't see. As a matter of fact, I can't see any cancer as being a "gift" of any sort.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly, not what you think!.......2002-11-22

A sensitive, well edited and written series of vignettes by, for, and about women and cancer. Forty six women share their stories, addressing depression, reflection, inspiration, information, and retrospection of facing cancer. But it is more than another breast cancer book; it is a celebration of women and their wealth of responses to adversity. This is a must-read for any woman facing her own or a friend's cancer, or for any man who loves or cares for a woman facing a medical challenge.

5 out of 5 stars Review of The Breast Cancer Book of Strength and Courage.......2002-11-21

"The Breast Cancer Book of Strength and Courage" was a wonderful source of comfort and encouragement. Having been recently diagnosed with breast cancer, I could truly relate to the feelings other women in the book experienced. I too had to make so many decisions in a short period of time. As I read the book, I realized how many other women had been in that same terrifying place, and how many women met the challenge of healing head on. Every woman's cancer is different, but the feelings that accompany the daignosis are the same. I truly appreciate the honesty and the willingness of all of the survivors who shared their stories. I would highly recommend the book to all women with breast cancer and to their families.

Linda Bell, the wife of a retired diplomat who raised her own children in assignments around the world, recounts the problems and pleasures of living a nomad's life, from the perspective both of the children and their parents.

                                              5 out of 5 stars A lively, intimate look at some flesh-and-blood Third-Culture Kids.......2006-04-20

Through personal interviews with well-chosen 13 subjects, Linda Bell gets to explore in some depth the strange experience of growing up American overseas, and then of having to readjust to life in the States after coming "home." Her interviewees range from age 29 through late 50s, and they come alive in these pages. Those of us who have had analogous upbringings will feel shocks of sympathetic recognition as we read the life stories of these adult "Third Culture Kids." Such familiar issues as "Who I Was, When," and "Living on the Surface," and "Why Do I Feel So migratory?" (all of them titles of chapters) spring vividly to life here. Issues of language inevitably crop up. And the absence, among these subjects, of any sense of attachment to a landscape came as a new insight to this reader. As Linda Bell herself says of her subjects, "they didn't seem to take much notice of where they were living... It just didn't come up as a topic. Also, not one of the voices seems really attached to the geography where they find themselves now." This is a fresh and highly readable addition to a growing literature on the still scarcely acknowledged matter of being raised American in foreign lands and how it can affect one's psyche and personality.

This is useful for parents living overseas and wishing to know how 'Third Culture Kids' struggle to re-enter their 'home' countries after being raised overseas. It can also provide useful background reading for ethnographic researchers as Bell provides extracts from original transcripts. Bell is clear that she is a journalist and not an academic, so do not expect in- depth analysis drawing on lots of other sources. However, the extracts are very effectively compiled to demonstrate common trends.
                                              The interviewees are all Americans.

Kenward Elmslie's way with words cuts a singular swath through a polymath variety of forms. This collection of poems and ephemera treats language sometimes as paint to be thrown on canvas, sometimes as a series of fascinatingly odd concrete objectsUand throughout, Elmslie takes full advantage of the word's status as an infinite well of signification. Elmslie's work navigates between the comic and the serious, between the personal and the political, and between the oblique and the straightforward so deftly that the reader is left breathless. Nite Soil is yet another great book by one of today's leading radical poets.
