Not much to go on.......2004-03-02
While this book provided some general information about lifestyle and local culture, it lacked any serious details required by someone looking to retire abroad. In particular the tax information was at best irrelevant and at worst incorrect and misleading. Many of the Additional Resources and Useful Websites are out of date.
Overall this book provides a useful starting point for those considering retirement abroad, but lacks sufficient detail to make it a truly useful resource.
Good for General "Wishing" or to start planning.......2002-10-20
This guide has general tips and contacts for what are the top overseas retirement destinations for Americans. For each country there are suggested locations and real estate options that would be of use to retirees. Locations that have substantial US/UK populations are also noted, for the not-quite-so adventurous. As stated above, this work is most useful for someone who's maybe thinking about living overseas, and wants to look at the pro's and cons. OR, convincing your "Significant Other" that yes you can actually live at that great vacation spot on Crete....
Anyone who's already deep into planning for such a move, or has spent considerable time overseas would probably already know most of the information provided here.
The Doors of San Miguel de Allende by Robert deGast.......2002-03-04
This book is a feast for the eyes and senses. Composed of photographs of doors in the town of San Miguel de Allende, the writer/photographer,Robert de Gast, transports the reader to this incredibly beautiful place.How can mere doors have anything to say? Well, these doors "say" volumes about the charm and elegance of this historical Mexican town. One wants to go there...to walk up to one of those doors...to touch the exquisite brass knockers ...to knock! And, to be let in.Each door is different. Each door is unique. The colors, textures and carvings on the doors add to their individuality and charm. Vamos!
Less than adequate.......2001-03-29
Having been to many of the places covered in this book, I was saddened to note that the writers appear to have not done their homework. The information is the sort that you could obtain by writing to the countrys Embassys. The book also appears to be aimed at the High End Market. The main reason for living in another country when you retire is to make your retirement income get "more bang for the buck." All the authors dialog about $700 to $1,900/month rents made me wonder what their perspective on retirement haven's is. Their internet resource guide was off and needs to be updated. Buy this book for general information purposes only.
The Best Book I've Seen........1999-11-30
This is the best book that I've seen that explains the pros and cons of top foreign retirement locations.Even if you're not ready to retire, the book is a fascinating explanation of what foreign retirement life is like. These havens aren't specific sites, such as retirement communities: instead, the book provides general information about various countries that are considered ideal for retirement. Most explanations include recommended living areas and places to avoid. Real estate, both rental and ownership, is thoroughly covered. Renting is generally recommended, at least initially. Some countries make real estate ownership for foreigners impractical or impossible. In other countries, the authors explain the easy procedures and how to avoic real estate rip-offs. In alphabetical order, the top retirement havens are Argentina, Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Ecuador, France, Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Spain and Thailnad. The appendix includes useful Web sites for Americans living overseas, health insurance informations and other foreign retirement resources. This superb book will make many readers reconsider their retirement plans, especially after learning how economical foreign residency can be. This unique book should just be considered an introduction to the best foreign retirement countries: further study and visits are recommended. My baby.......2002-08-27
This book makes anyone proud to be owned by an ESS. The late Mrs. Gasow was a true conniseur of Springers. She was, after all, "related" to Robert, Ch. Salilyn's Condor, who blew away competition at any dog show he ever entered, as did his granddaughter, Samantha. I am extremely proud to say that our Springer has Salilyn lines.
The pictures alone make the book a worthwhile purchase!
A Valuable Breed Information Book.......2000-07-02
In my opinion, this book is a wonderful resource of information on English Springer Spaniels. Many people are not aware that there are 2 types of Springers, field and bench. This book clearly details and illustrates the differences between the 2 lines, therefore allowing people to determine which type of Springer best suits their life. The only information I found missing was a section on health concerns related to Springers. I would recommend this book for potential Springer owners and current owners alike.

This review is limited to the section II of the book which focused on show and obedience Springers. Section II essentially highlights significant show dogs beginning as early as the 1920's to the mid 1990's. There is a decent chapter on the breed standard and a chapter on how to groom your dog for show. Other than that, it doesn't really tell you how to choose a puppy or raise it (aside from a short section on what to feed your puppy). The chapter on obedience is very brief. I did glance at the section on field Springers. That seemed to be more complete and informative than the show section. It covers the history of the breed, selection of a puppy, early basic training to advanced gun dog training.

Casual Information.......2002-06-19
We purchased this book to get info on the ESS breed and its care as we'd put a deposit on a pup after researching via internet. This book does give a concise abbreviated overview of the breed. For a quick reference it suffices but it falls short of details and specifics. For instance the training section is extremely brief and certainly does not address bringing the pup into your home and beginning an indepth housebreaking routine and training system. This did provide a jumping off point; however if you plan on getting the dog...get a more detail manual.

A WORK OF ART.......2006-06-29
I found this book to be beautiful and profound. Regardless if the men pictured were lovers or friends, the photographs made me realize that today we live in a completely different society than the one pictured in this enlightening book. It seemed to be a time (1850-1920)when men were more free to hold hands, hug, even kiss, without the fear of being riduculed, beaten or labeled. It makes me realize that we live in a society just now when we should have moved forward with our emotional freedom and tolerance of others. Instead we seem to be moving backward every day. That is why I feel this book should be looked at, experienced and shared over and over again. It reminded me that in spite of our great leaps in science, medicine and fantastic inventions, and our recent explorations of space, as humankind we seem to have taken a leap into a world that is filled with hate and intolerance, one that has lost the innocence and joy one feels in experiencing these photographs of a special and more unique time and place.
Unusual and touching.......2002-08-08
This slim volume of old daguerrotypes, tintypes, and photographs of men together provides a touching reminder of a time when males felt no inhibitions about expressing physical affection for one another and having it documented on film. The men who populate these pages may or may not have been sexual lovers, but their casual embraces and closeness are curiously moving in a time when gay men and women are struggling for acceptance against frequently virulent opposition. The only drawbacks to this volume are its short length and occasionally cutesy artwork, but these should not dissuade any reader from enjoying these images.
Beautiful pics, leaves you wanting more.......2001-11-27
This is what I would call a nice little novelty book--perfectly charming, fascinating historically, but not one I will likely pull out to look at time and time again.
The pictures are indeed fascinating (especially the candid nudes!). However--and in fairness, the author stresses this in the foreword--I would guess that a significant number of these "couples" are not romantically linked in any way. I suspect that they most often simply represent a time when men in our culture (or in European cultures, since many of them are from overseas) thought nothing of touching one another affectionately in public. It actually documents very well that the "manly" refusal of men to hold hands or even to stand with arms around one another, is of more recent vintage, and thus it holds out the hope that maybe the pendulum will swing back. I recommend the book, though. It makes a nice addition to my collection--and the design, by the way, is superb....
Well-designed book makes you wish for more.......1999-09-17
While this book is well-designed and many of the photographs are lovely and thought-provoking (Are these men friends, brothers, lovers?), you leave it realizing that this is basically one person's collection of old photographs of men together. I bet there are many, many more--and better examples out there that would have made this book memorable.

From the author: Fatherhood is a familial role that is historically bound, in the sense that it is subject to social, economic, and political influences that can change expectations for how fathers should act. In this essay, we discuss the cyclical nature of shifts in cultural prescriptions for North American fathers and echo arguments raised elsewhere that fatherhood is currently in the midst of such a shift, away from the authoritarian, emotionally detached father and toward the involved, nurturant father. We reason herein that such a shift should manifest itself in observable differences between the qualities of men's relationships with their fathers and the qualities of their relationships with their own sons. A study involving 139 father-son dyads revealed that men felt closer to, were more satisfied with, and expressed more verbal, nonverbal, and supportive affection with, their sons than with their own fathers. These findings emerged from both fathers' and sons' reports. Moreover, fathers reported feeling greater closeness and expressing more affection to their sons than their sons felt or expressed to them.

Paint the Yellow Tiger.......2000-06-14
This is a great book for an art lover to read. It is not only because the author Mr. Dong has a tremendus reputation in the watercolor world but also his beautiful art works with familiar city scenes. Reading this book makes you feel that you have been traveling with this great artist as a long time friend, bringing you into his life. from a young boy who like to paint the Yellow Tiger until he becomes a famous artist. Whether this book serve as an autobiography or a story book, the author put most of his art skills and philosophy into it. Such as, all his human figures are facing the same direction and think the same things, He always seems to put the oriental Yin-Yan rule into his painting. I also enjoy his soft color, the balance of shape and light and the composition for which he has become so famous.
