Customer Reviews:
Nice guide to some common prairie flowers.......2002-01-25
I bought this book because I was working in an Iowa prairie and wanted a good guide to the wildflowers. This is it! Large color photos are arranged by general blooming time/season. The text gives information about the plant, habitats, seasons, as well as some interesting folklore or other uses of the plant. This book certainly doesn't contain all flowering plants of the prairie, but it's a great start and a handy reference, especially for cross-referencing. Full-color photos are good, often showing both flowers and leaves.
Book Description
Shopping for Buddhas is Jeff Greenwald's story of his obsessive search for the perfect Buddha statue. In the backstreets of Kathmandu, he discovers more than he bargained for...and his souvenir-hunting turns into an ironic metaphor for the clash between spiritual riches and material greed. Politics, religion and serious shopping collide in this witty account of an enlightening visit to Nepal.
Customer Reviews:
consumerist hippie buddhism.......2006-06-03
This book starts out in a very promising manner and during the first 20 pages or so I was looking forward to a good read. But it soon degenerates into trivialities, and anyone with an interest in Buddhist art will soon realise Greenwald doesn't have a clue about Buddhist sculpture (this wouldn't matter except that in the writing he pretends to).
The hash-intoxicated epiphany that serves as the book's ending is the most disappointing of all. This might have made a good stop along the way, but the early buildup raises one's expectations and it feels rather unsatisfactory to say the least. (Greenwald's Size of The World suffers from a similar balance problem.)
Readers who like this book will probably be those with limited exposure to travel in Nepal and to Buddhism/Buddhist art. I liked Jeff's earlier book on Nepal, Mr Raja's Neighborhood, more (I see that's out of print, too).
Very moved by this book. I loved it........2006-04-27
I first learned of Jeff Greenwald from the book "A Sense of Place" which is a collection of interviews with authors best known for their travel/adventure writing.
Having been intrigued by the concept behind this book, I immediately checked Amazon to see how well it was received. I was quite surprised to find reviews that ran the spectrum from "Loved it" to "Hated it." I fall into the "Loved it" category.
Jeff's writing is very real, down to earth, funny and intelligent. He's not afraid to admit when he's made a cultural faux pas, and I think this makes for quite an entertaining read. Live and learn, right?
Other readers found the pursuit of the Buddha trite and materialistic, but I saw it as a search for much more. For perfection in one self, a sense of beginning, or one of closure. I have a feeling that this book ended up being a great deal more thought provoking than the author originally intended. The ending of this book actually moved me to tears.
I highly recommend this book, as well as "The Size of The World" by the same author.
An Insightful Quest -- Towards a Buddha Image .......2005-09-20
I liked this book! I took the text for face value - what I read is what I got. I did not look beneath the skin for hidden meanings or innuendos. And, as such, I thought it was a wonderful, humorous read with insight from the experiences of an author who clearly cares about the country and the people. I liked the personal, open approach of the text, which is presented in an accessible writing style. Amongst my favorite parts were the descriptions of the life of the Buddha and of the Hindu gods, which were presented in a reader-friendly way. It seems to me that the reviews on Amazon are, for the most part, unfair. I didn't get the idea that Greenwald ever set out to define Buddhism; and I didn't sense an "arrogance" in his story. Rather, I took it as his journey in a Buddhist country whose culture and people captured and led him towards a quest for what he considered a "perfect" image of the Buddha that would always be with him, to either still or energize the mind. I thought it was a great thread to pull the text together. Surely anyone reading this book will connect with the author's commitment to conveying his experiences of Shopping for Buddhas.
I regret I bought this book!.......2004-05-23
If you look for adventure of some Californians in Nepal (and that could be in whatever other place in the world), buy this book. But if your intention is to have a glimpse of what Buddhism as well as Buddhist practioners are, there are dozens of books (that I have read myself and for sure hundreds of others I haven't read yet) that will give you that.
Unfortunately I started to read this book after the fantastic "The Quantum and The Lotus" (by Trinh Xuan Thuan and Matthieu Ricard), which make the reading of "Shopping for Buddhas" a very hard work, as what I was looking for was not adventures of Westerners in Nepal, but some content as well.
When I decided to buy this book I must confess that I didn't read the reviews. If I did that I wouldn't have bought it. So please, consider not only this review from me with "1 star", but also the other ones with higher amount of "stars" before you take your decision.
Got some good laughs.......2002-04-21
I bought this book while traveling through Thailand and undergoing my own quest for an acceptable Buddha (perfection was too high a standard). Yeah, the writer comes across as self-absorbed and arrogant, and he reminded me of fellow Westerners who had embarrassed me during my travels. However, this book was an entertaining read with situations that I could identify with. I needed an escape and some laughs after challenges encountered during travel in Asia, and this book gave those laughs to me. I wasn't expecting perfection from the writer, just entertainment.

The BEST!.......2007-07-19
This book is an absolute must for all who are interested in Nineteenth Century European embroidery on canvas. There are many charted designs included, but many other illustrations are large and detailed enough to serve as charts in themselves. Even better than Embroideries and Patterns from 19th Century Vienna, and that's saying a lot!
Star in my collection .......2006-10-31
This is the book I've been searching for. I love the colorful Berlin charts of the past, yet they are impossible to find today. The black and white charts at the back of the book have been modernized with DMC floss colors, and are priceless in my opinion. This book, along with Raffaella's other title, Embroideries & Patterns of Ninteenth Century Vienna, are stars in my extensive needlework collection.
Raffaella Serena has out-done herself with this book!.......2002-07-14
This is a wonderful book! Like her other books, it is filled with page after page of colorful Berlin work charts, in different
categories such as Cats, Dogs, Horses, Exotic Animals, Birds, etc. My favorite is the category of Children with Animals.
The best thing is the section of black and white charts at the
back of the book, I counted 40 of them! They are clear and easy
to use, and coded for DMC floss, and DMC wool. I have all of
Raffaella's books, and this may very well be her best. I can
only hope that she will continue to produce more books like these!

An useful little book.......2000-06-10
This book presents a wide variety of laces; eventhough the drawings are not very fine, they can be quite useful to the advanced lacemaker: it's easier to draw a pricking from a sharp design than from a detailed engraving. At the bottom of every page appears the name of the lace represented, and that is already a guide for those who wants to turn those drawings into actual lace. There are no prickings, diagrams or technical instructions; everything is left to the skill of the lacemaker. That's challenging, indeed. A well done historical introduction is one of the best features of this book, that will find its place in every lacemaker's library.

MASTERING TIME - - - WELL-WRITTEN, WITH EXQUISITE PHOTOS.......2000-07-11
'Mastering Time' (Gisbert Brunner) is a compilation of the history of Heuer Watches, including a generous account of the TAG Heuer conglomerate after Heuer was purchased by TAG. The book is large, heavy, and a definite coffee table addition printed on heavy glossy stock. If you are a Heuer or TAG Heuer aficionado, this book is a definite must for your book collection on fine watches, containing beautiful color photos of such pieces as the original Heuer stopwatches, and a generous history on the company and its virtual monopoly on the early stopwatch/competition-style pieces of which Heuer was the top producer. Also, TAG Heuer is well represented, including exquisite photos of some of their best offerings, including the once very chic S/el automatic chronometer now out of production, which to my mind was one of the most classic and beautiful pieces ever produced by TAG Heuer.
This book is an excellent addition to the collection of any reader interested in fine timepieces, and I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
No Vegetables what a bummer.......2004-02-09
Do not purchase this book if you are looking for advice on starting vegetables, because even though veggies are annuals that bloom, they are not covered in this guide. If you prefer to reference your plants by the common names (e.g. Lilly of the Valley - not Convallaria) or a color photo, then this book will be hard to use, because the plants are ordered by their taxanomic/latin names and all of the drawings are black and white sketches.
If you are able to find the plant that you are looking for, then the propogation/seed starting information is pretty good.
Bottomline, probably not the best book if you are just beginnig to experiment with the hobby of growing your annuals from seed.
Good on the seed, but not on the bloom.......2002-04-09
I have been planting flowers from seed in my home for almost 5 years now. Last year I had over 1400 seedlings on multi-level shelves under flourescent and natural light in my dining room. (Boy do I need a greenhouse!) So this book was not a lot of new information to me. A lot of what is listed can be found on the back of a seed packet, but it's not practical to sit on the floor of my favorite garden supply store and read every seed package for suggestions before I buy it. (This is important, because I'm not interested in refrigerating my seeds 3 weeks before I plant them or doing other such preparations required for some seeds.) One major thing missing from this book was photography. There were drawings, but I'm sorry to say that they were mostly a way of breaking up the monotony of the text rather than a reference tool. On the good side, this book did an excellent job of providing the proper germination environment, and each plant had a quick reference in a shaded box that listed the type of plant (annual, perennial, etc), its hardiness zone, and its flowering season. This allowed me to quickly eliminate the plants that were inappropriate for my zone. The regular index wasn't very useful, but one wonderful addition was an index of the common & latin names. I refer to this when looking at some of my books that include the full color photography I was missing. (Almost makes up for it....almost!) Of course, there is the standard hardiness zone map, but they also added a map each for the probable first and last frost dates. (Nice!) Also included was a directory of seed companies and their addresses. All in all, this book does a good job of covering the seed part, but a poor job of covering the bloom part.
Indispensible.......2002-02-20
I am a plant propagator, both at work and at home, and I have access to all the seed starting handbooks. This is the one I turn to the most often. It's comprehensive and easy to use. In fact, if it included vegetables, it could pretty much stand alone. The only thing that would make it a little better would be illustrations of the seedlings.
Best reference on seed starting.......2001-05-08
This is a great reference book for gardeners who are interested in starting plants from seed rather than buying the same old stuff from their local garden centers each year. This best thing about this book is that it rates each plant on its degree of difficulty when it comes to growing that plant from seed. Unlike the seed catalogs which imply that all plants are easy to grow from seed, this book breaks it down into detailed instructions as to how to get the seeds to germinate and what conditions they require once germination takes place. It is a great reference when browsing through the seed catalogs as to which plants are worth trying to start from seed and those whose needs may be way too much time, money or environmentally demanding to even bother with.
Invaluable reference guide!.......2000-01-17
This is an indispensable book for the home seed-starter. I teach plant propagation classes in addition to starting a thousand seedlings in my basement every year and this is the book I recommend. An encyclopedic format with plant-by-plant listings of both indoor and outdoor sowing requirements, transplanting and care information, plus line drawings of each plant make this an invaluable reference guide!

Great for student research.......2005-07-12
Well organized, from the definition of sunflower right through the life cycle, this book thoroughly covers the growth of the sunflower plant. Vocabulary words are boldly highlighted and explained in context, as well as in the accompanying glossary. Captions supplement each photograph. Plant part, pest, and pollination questions are asked and answered. This book would be a valuable resource to primary students conducting research on the life cycle of plants, particularly the sunflower.

Book Description
After three years of unusually dry weather, the British Columbia Interior was ready to explode. All that was needed was a spark to start a conflagration.
By the end of the year, more than 2,500 fires had destroyed 264,433 hectares of forest. A quarter of a billion trees were lost. Three hundred and thirty-four homes were destroyed. More than 50,000 people were evacuated. More property was lost to fire than in any previous year in B.C. history.
Reporters and photographers from newspapers serving the Interior – including the Kelowna Daily Courier, Penticton Herald, Kamloops Daily News, Nelson Daily News, and Cranbrook Daily Townsman – witnessed these events as they happened. With the material they supplied, Ross Freake and Don Plant have written an authoritative text, and selected some 140 stunning, full-colour photographs describing the terrible fires of 2003. Firestorm records the spectacular advance of the major fires, the mass evacuations that affected so many communities, and the devastation the fires left behind.
The book also records details of the heroic battles fought to defeat the fires by volunteer and professional firefighters from across the country. The pages of this book are graphic testimony to the courage, resilience, and resourcefulness of men and women who were pushed to the limit and emerged triumphant.
