Customer Reviews:
If you raise canaries, you must own this book!.......2002-11-12
This is the quintessential canary handbook; easy to read and understand, filled with excellent photos and advice, with a good section on genetics if you should choose to breed these marvelous little birds. Vriends is a wonderful writer, well-organized on all the chapters in the aspects of canary breeding; his love of the birds comes through on every page. I have raised canaries for several years, and recommend this book to every person who has ever procured a bird from me---in fact, if they have not had a canary before, I always tell them to buy THIS book first, read it and THEN call me back. It is an invaluable resource tool.
The BEST Value Ever.......2002-03-21
Having been involved in care of all sorts of animals for over 40 years and habitually buying books about each, I can say without reservation that this book is the best value for the dollar that I have ever purchased. Matthew Vriends is an internationally recognized expert on the species and he has provided us with an extraordinary handbook. The information, illustrations and photographs exceed anything I have ever purchased in a paperback edition of an animal care book.
Good information provided.......2000-01-25
Very clear. Covers feeding, housing, breeding, and genetics,as well as common diseases and household medicines that can be used to treat various conditions to which canaries are susceptible. However, an owner who does not want to breed might grow tired of the focus on breeding. Also, owners with canaries who were not handfed as babies may assume there is something wrong with their bird because the book discusses relatively tame handfed canaries and neglacts state that their tameness and willingness to be handled is not true of birds who were not hand fed. So be aware that if your bird does not like to be handled, this is normal. In fact, a non hand fed canary who does not struggle when caught may be ill. One final note: Information and medicating are fine, but misdiagnosis can occur,so it is good to also be have the name of a vet.
The best up-to-date canary care book on the market........1999-03-17
Dr. Vriends' book is a comprehensive guide to keeping canaries. He is an expert on aviculture who has published many books on its various aspects. The present book covers canaries of type, color, and song varieties and is richly illustrated with photographs and drawings which bring the readable text to life. The information contained in the book is wide-ranging and accurate.
Great book!...Everything you need to know about canaries!.......1999-01-17
Yes!...This is a very valuable book to have. The format and layout are just perfect. Information?..it's all here. I'm going to use this book often.

Book Description
The fascinating story of the hidden world of bird-breeding, of contentious ideas in 1920s Germany, and of two amateur scientists who unwittingly managed to be decades ahead of their time.
Long before Dolly the Sheep or bioengineered corn, there was the Red Canary-the first organism to be manipulated by genetic technology, back in the 1920s. The effort to produce a red canary invoked all of the deep issues that troubled genetic engineering decades later: the nature of genes and how they work, the specter of eugenics, and the relative roles of nature and nurture in determining what an organism is. Behavioral ecologist Tim Birkhead describes how a sweet-voiced green bird discovered by Spanish explorers in the 1300s became a craze in Renaissance Europe, how breeders gradually turned its green plumage to yellow, and how a pair of German scientists used the first bit of gene technology in the 1920s to produce an almost-red canary. But the true red canary would not come until the 1960s, when British scientists successfully bred one, and genes alone would not be sufficient to create one. A Brand New Bird is a compelling tale of a fascinating episode in the history of genetics.

Book Review.......2005-10-25
Sometimes more is less. That is how I felt about this book. Mr. Birkhead's entertaining story on how two German bird lovers attempt to create a red Canary would have made a perfect long (maybe two part) magazine article. But instead he chose to write this book.
Birkhead tells the story of how, back in the 1920's, Hans Duncker and Karl Reich conducted experiments with Red Siskin and Canary hybrids with the goal of transferring the Siskins red plumage genes into the Canary.
In addition to telling the details of the creation of today's Red-factor Canary, Birkhead gives the reader much insight into the history of bird keeping and breeding in general. For example, the reader learns the importance of German aviculture in creating different cage bird varieties; The history and evolution of other Canary breeds; Insight into how mutations occur and are perpetuated by animal breeders.
I am recommending this book to all bird breeders of different mutations. The book would be an appropriate addition to a Red-factor Canary breeder's library. The book should be interesting to anybody interested in how different breeds occur and are perpetuated by animal breeders.
A FASCINATING ACCOUNT OF CANARY BREEDING!.......2004-09-28
This book is fantastic!! I couldn't put it down. It's not just about developing the red factor canary as one might think from the title. It is a history from the beginnings of canary keeping, Victorian times, and before, and up to the present in Germany, England, France, all over the world. You can read a thousand books on canaries and not have a fraction of the information here with truth and clarity. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in bird history, cage bird breeding and keeping of canaries and finches. Tim Birkhead does an excellent job of telling the story and did a tremendous amount of research to present this fascinating true history.
Tim Birkhead (2003): A Brand-New Bird.......2003-12-15
"A Brand-new Bird" is the entertaining story of how two German bird lovers spent most of their spare and life time experimenting to create a red canary. Hans Duncker (1881-1961) and Karl Reich (1885-1970) had in common a keen interest in bird breeding. Duncker, however, had been the more academic of both and is considered as one of the first avian geneticists. Reich on the other hand had highly praised skills in rearing and cross-breeding captive birds. He had been one of the very few breeders holding a strain of canaries singing Nightingale songs. Both conducted many experiments to hybridize Red Siskins and canaries for getting the formers "red-plumage-genes" into a canary brood. In the end they actually never succeeded beyond an orange plumage of their canaries, and it was later up to the Englishman Jack Swift to breed a truly crimson red canary. Nevertheless, Duncker and Reich did some amazing pioneer work towards the understanding of inheritance in birds.
Besides the main story Tim Birkhead skilfully draws a historical overview on bird catching and bird song contests, explains the etymology of bird trappers' jargon, gives many details on the early domestication of canaries, illustrates pre-war Germany, but also analyses well Duncker's involvement in Nazi thoughts and Eugenics. The book is well and thrillingly written. One actually wonders how so many facts and different aspects were possible to be included without loosing the red line towards the climax at the end of the book. This is a truly entertaining and informative book not only for bird breeders, ornithologists, geneticists and academics, but also for anybody with an interest in human culture and time history. It also remains the only modern book so far to stress bird keeping and its major influence on the understanding of ornithology and general biology, respectively.
Frank Steinheimer, Ornithology - Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin.

Ian Myles Slater on A Mysterious Classic.......2005-01-02
This edition of "Songs of the South" is a revised form (1985) -- rather more extensively altered than Hawkes' modest description might suggest -- of a complete, and annotated, translation (first edition 1959) of one of the oldest anthologies of Chinese poetry. Among surviving poetic texts, the "Ch'u Tz'u" (Wade-Giles transliteration) is supposedly second in age only to the "Book of Songs," traditionally edited by Confucius himself. Time and layers of interpretation, mainly derived from an early commentary of uncertain reliability, have made it a difficult work, but it is reputed to contain poetry of great beauty. David Hawkes managed to capture at least some of that beauty, and to supply an interpretive framework, and a great deal of fascinating lore about early Chinese civilization.
Large portions of the "Songs of the South" in fact clearly belong to the Han dynasty, several centuries later. These sections are imitations and extensions of a group of poems supposed to be the work of a certain Qu Yuan (Ch'u Yuan), a minister of the state of Ch'u (Pinyin Qu) in "southern" (now more like central) China, around 300 B.C. These "original" poems are themselves supposed to be imitations of traditional religious songs of the region, written by the minister while in exile from the royal court, and intended as criticism of the king's policies, and treatment of the author. The shamans (men and women) who courted the gods are seen as the minister seeking the king. Their supposed author himself became the subject of a sentimental legend of a noble official who drowned himself rather than witness the destruction of his ruler and country, and was later still connected with the Dragon Boat Festival, which was said to re-enact the search for his body. The exotic and troubling imagery of spirit lovers was thus adjusted to the self-image of the scholar-bureaucrats of Imperial China.
Although this political reading still has its defenders (see Geoffrey R. Waters' "Three Elegies of Ch'u" for an elaborate example), Hawkes spent decades studying this original core as more or less direct reflections of Chinese religion, myth, and legend before they were subjected to Confucian systematization. From this point of view (shared by, among others, Arthur Waley, who also translated a number of these poems), the appropriation of their imagery for Taoist-sounding visionary poems and prose extravaganzas in the rest of the anthology makes perfect sense. A political application of the relations between a shaman (male or female) and a sought-after deity is, of course, not ruled out. The "Nine Songs" (actually there are more; eleven) are extremely moving, whatever interpretation is adopted.
Another of the early poems, "Tian wen," or "Heavenly Questions," appears to be a collection of riddles about early gods, kings, and heroes, and is a somewhat opaque source of evidence for early Chinese narratives. Hawkes supplies it with fascinating notes, and cautiously favors the theory that it originally referred to a set of paintings, or perhaps a pictorial map. (Less inclusive examples of both have been turning up in Han Dynasty tombs, so this theory has some physical evidence to support it.)
Of the various translations of this material I have seen, I prefers Hawkes' revised version, but with the Penguin edition currently out of print (although often available used), alternatives may be easier for the curious to find.
Selections from the *original* (Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1959; Beacon Press Paperback, Boston 1962) version of Hawkes' translations have been anthologized, notably in Cyril Birch's "Anthology of Chinese Literature: From Early Times to the Fourteenth Century" (1965), which seems to stay in print.
Among translations by others, Arthur Waley's "The Nine Songs: A Study of Shamanism in Ancient China" (1955) is reprinted from time to time, and his translations from other parts of the collection are scattered through his volumes of Chinese poetry. More conveniently, entirely new translations of all eleven of the "Nine Songs," the beautiful and difficult "Li Sao," and several other pieces from the collection, along with later imitations and variously affiliated compositions, are included in Stephen Owen's "An Anthology of Chinese Literature: Beginnings to 1911" (1996) -- see mainly "The *Chu-ci*: 'Lyrics of Chu'," pages 155-175, and "The *Chu-ci* Tradition," pages 176-203," with "Calling Back the Soul," pages 204-214.

Chinese poems translated by a Chinese scholar.......2007-06-19
This is my first book of Chinese poems translated by a Chinese scholar. The selections are quite interesting, as I came across many poems and poets I didn't know before. Many of the love/lost love poems are quite intense: "Lament of the Autumn Fan" by Lady Ban, "The Deserted Lover" by Li Qun-Yu, "Grief in Autumn" by Lu Lun, and most of all the "Phoenix Hairpin" poems by Lu Yu and his lost lover Tang Wan. There was also interesting social commentary such as "A Year of War" by Cao Dao-Rong, and "The Peaseants" by Li Shen.
Highly Recommended.
