Book Description
This copiously illustrated book is a unique guide that helps both amateur naturalists and serious field botanists identify nonwoody plants-herbaceous weeds (including grasses and sedges) and wildflowers-as they are found in fall and winter in the northeastern United States and eastern Canada.
Customer Reviews:
Beautifully organized and illustrated.......2002-06-08
This book is very intelligently organized. Ms. Levine chose to order the identification keys in a manner that would be most helpful, rather than strictly by botanical taxonomy. This makes sense given that the winter remains of plants do not track their taxonomy. The illustrations are also a joy just to look at.

It's brand new........2002-09-23
The book came earlier than I expected and was a major help with the class that I am taking. It was reasonably priced especially since it was brand new. Thank you for the fast service and excellent product.

Book Description
This title in the acclaimed Michelin Green Guide series covers the area extending from the region around Paris (Ile-de-France) north to the coast of French Flanders. Within these regions visitors will find a variety of attractions to suit all tastes: several of France's most prestigious monuments such as Chartres Cathedral and the palaces at Versailles and Fontainebleau, expansive beaches, vast open landscapes dotted with soaring belfries and windmills, Europe's premier theme park, Disneyland Paris, and much more...This guide also includes an abridged section on Paris designed for those planning a short stay in the French capital.
Customer Reviews:
outstanding Michelin coverage, as usual.......2001-07-27
Unlike the previous reviewer, I was looking for coverage of Picardie (not Normandie or Bretagne or Paris, which are covered in separate Michelin guides), so this guide was perfect.
The guide covers Picardie, Nord Pas de Calais/French Flanders and the Ile de France. The coverage is exactly what one would expect from Michelin's intelligent, historical and comprehensive reviewing. I thought that the inclusion of coverage of the Ile de France was properly placed, and Michelin affords it detailed attention, as opposed to being treated as sidetrips from Paris.
Therefore, the guide is excellent for both Northern France and the Ile de France.
Great guide to le Nord.......2001-07-25
The 4th edition is quite a change from past green guides. It is much longer and includes limited hotel and restaurant listings as well as useful website addresses. It provides detailed information on architecture, art, beaches, numerous chateaux, nature reserves, walking tours etc for Flanders, Picardy etc. It is a great guide, especially if you have a car, as it provides a number of suggestions for driving tours. If you want a guide for the city of Paris it is probably better to get a guide that concentrates just on that city. However, if you want a guide for Pas-de-Calais towns and the greater Paris region (Versailles, Chartres, Fontainebleau) this one is a very good choice.
Misnomer de Michelin.......2000-09-08
As a devotee of Michelin Guides Vert, in anticipation of our forthcoming trip to Normandy and Brittany I was delighted to find listed on Amazon.com "Michelin THE GREEN GUIDE - Northern France and the Paris Region". On its arrival today I was disappointed to find that neither of our destination Departments was included - only "Nord - Pas de Calais", "Picardie", and "Ile de France - Paris". For what it covers, I presume that this volume meets Michelin's usual high standard. However, either Michelin or Amazon should have indicated what areas "Northern France" includes in this instance, if only by posting the small map of France highlighting the covered departments, that appears on the back cover of the volume. Also, the coverage of the city of Paris is only 7 pages plus a two page map. Thus, those anticipating a substantial coverage of Paris may be disappointed.

Interactive and entertaining format........1999-05-27
While other books on castles written for children may contain more substantial amounts of information, Mystery History of a Medieval Castle is great for kids who cannot or will not perform sustained reading. After reading the main text of each page, the reader has the opportunity to solve puzzles, answer questions which help develop critical thinking skills, and put together clues to find a villain. There is even a board game at the end of the book. Other texts may be used to supplement this one if more in-depth or broader information on the Middle Ages is required. This book is great as a fun activity when used in conjunction with classroom materials and Internet activities.

designing the web.......2000-08-03
It's really great to get a closer approach on the who's who in designing the web. This book reaches everyone who's interested in web as a visual medium. The "Design Agencies.Com" gives you an entire view on the process of creating web sites as the agencies exposes their feelings through comments and works. As a Web Designer it feeds me with the inspiration I need to keep on creating stuff for the Web, and I hope you all capture the same feeling I have about it.
Book Description
Lee and Ted are a young, hip New York City couple living together in New York City whose lives consist of nothing but cool work assignments, long lunches, and evenings out with their equally hip and trendy friends. But, not yet feeling quite equipped for life or love, they’re vague about plans for “the future.” “Our relationship is like a French movie,” Lee tells a friend. “There’s a lot of interesting character development, but no plot.”
One summer weekend, Lee and Ted stop at an animal shelter. They've always wanted a dog, and perhaps if they commit themselves to a loving pet, they reason, their lives will become more rooted. When they meet and fall in love with Rex, a beautiful, lively spaniel of mysterious origins abandoned on Doggie Death Row, they elatedly adopt him and bring him home, expecting to be flooded with doggie gratitude and exuberance. But Rex doesn’t romp and wiggle happily like the yellow Labs in Alpo commercials. He doesn’t greet Lee and Ted with exuberance or fetch The New York Times. Instead, Rex is unlike any dog the couple has ever known–he clearly loathes his new owners, their friends, their apartment, and New York City. He terrorizes everyone he encounters (even the friendly librarian who lives next door) and runs away every chance he gets. Lee and Ted are flummoxed. How have they ended up with the only dog on the planet who won’t offer unconditional love?
The couple question whether they can handle this dog, especially in New York City. They can’t agree on how to train him–while Ted wants to use the “hand-corrective method,” Lee prefers a nurturing approach. Consequently, Rex’s behavior doesn’t improve much in the first few months. And Lee and Ted’s relationship doesn’t improve either–they begin to argue constantly. But the twosome refuse to give up on their pooch. As Rex becomes more doglike, they begin to take delight in Rex’s antics and signs of progress: his first nonviolent dog-run experience, his first Halloween costume contest, his first kiss. And as they witness their pet’s gradual transformation from a wounded, fearful puppy into a confident, free-spirited dog, Lee and Ted’s relationship also transforms, as their commitment to the dog seals their commitment to each other.
Lee Harrington writes with an open heart, in prose that is witty, insightful, and poignant. Ultimately a love story between humans and animals alike, Rex and the City is a hilarious and riotous romp of a memoir.
From the Hardcover edition.

This is the best and funniest dog memoir out there!!.......2007-09-08
OMG this was hilarious! but also tender and loving and wise and true. This woman is a terrific prose writer, and I would definately read other books by her. This is the story about rescuing an abused dog and bringing him into a teensy apartment in a bad neighborhood in New York City! who would have thought such a tough beginning (for the dog) would have such a happy ending. bravo! viva rex!
from magazine to book- still charming.......2007-08-17
I had read excerpts of this in Bark magazine (yes I'm one of those dog nerds) and was charmed then, and after reading the entire book, remain so. The things I think I like best are, 1) its a really accurate depiction of the trials and tribulations of getting a shelter dog and that transition, 2)as well as how complicated dog ownership can be in an urban area. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's not heavy or serious, but it struck a chord in me- someone who has experienced both of those situations. It's not all sunshine and roses the first day, and no one warns you about that. But that is also where some good comedy comes from. I enjoyed this book very much and would definitely recommend it.

A cute,funny.really good book!.......2007-06-26
I just started reading BARK magazine and saw this advertised and had to order it as I read ANYTHING about dogs I can find....I loved it...It is hysterically funny and I finished it in about 2 days I enjoyed it so much! If you have a shelter dog or a rescue dog you should definitely read it as you will relate to so much....The baby talk we all start to use upon getting a dog-especially a fearful one was really funny.(I do it too)!!! Highly recommended!
Really good book!.......2006-09-16
I just finished reading this book and I loved it! I've read Rex and the City stories in The Bark mag and I've always enjoyed them so when I read in The Bark that Lee Harrington had a book coming out based on the same stories I couldn't wait to read it. If you're a dog lover you will certainly enjoy this book! I saw my self, my husband and my dogs in this story and laughed through out the book. My husband is reading it now!!
hilarious, heartwarming and DEFINATELY worth reading.......2006-05-18
I have two rescued dobermans and went through a h*ll of a time trying to help them get used to their new homes.
This book had me in tears, both becuase i was laughing so hard at how funny her descriptions are, but also I cried sometimes, because what she says about dogs, and about people with dogs, is so true and real. Rescuing dogs sure can be hard. But this is a great story!! Just wait and see what a terrific dog "rex" turns into, and how the author turns into a terrific person as well. I am giving copies to all my dog-loving friends. and i hear there is a Volume II coming out, i can't wait for that one.
the sign.......2006-05-03
I haven't finished this book yet, but I've read the Rex and they City column in Bark magazine, so I know something about the story line.
Anyway, I found the following part amusing (these two people have just gotten a dog and right away they are doubting what they've done):
-----
"Can we do it?" I said to Ted. "Can we take him back?"
"I think we're going to have to," he said.
[...]
"I just wish there were a sign," I said. "Some sign, some guarantee that it's not always going to be like this. If he'll love us some day. That there'll be some reward."
Rex was lying on the floor as I said this, and he had begun to lick his privates in a loud and rather lewd way. Rex glanced at me suspiciously and belched. Then he went back to licking himself.
"There's your sign," Ted said.
----
Heh. I don't think I have ever heard a dog burp. If I had asked for a sign and my dog burped at that exact moment, I'm pretty sure I would have taken him back.
They don't take the dog back, though. I guess that's because he burped in chapter 2 and the book wasn't finished. Smart dog not to burp in a later chapter.
Not everyone likes this kind of humor, but if you do you might like this book.
The best dog memoir I have ever read!! it's hilarious.......2006-04-26
Rex and the City is the best dog memoir I have ever read!!! And it seems to me that the reviewer above missed an important point. Ms. Harrington has written an honest, poignant book about her experiences rescuing a shelter dog. The author admits, from the very first chapter, that before she got the dog she was rather misguided and self-absorbed-and this is the very thing that the viewer above is criticizing her for. But I think the author was very brave to admit her shortcomings-she discusses her fears and insecurities and poor judgment she felt as a woman in her thirties. She discusses her insecurities about feeling she is not a good enough person to take care of her dog. And because she is so honest, Harrington subjects herself to the very sort of criticism the reviewer above subjected her to. (the reviewer calls her "uninteresting" and a "fool"). But who hasn't been a fool in life? To admit this, and to write a memoir about it, is very brave indeed. And very real. The best thing about REX AND THE CITY is that the author overcomes a lot of her shortcomings, all because she rehabilitated this dog. In rescuing Rex, she ultimately rescued herself. And that, in my mind, is an inspiring story- for dog lovers and insecure women alike. The dog showed Ms. Harrington what it feels like to receive unconditional love. And we could all use more of that. A lot of people believe, erroneously, that we can find happiness through material things. And it is a big epiphany to realize only love can buy happiness. I recommend this book highly.

Book Description
Jo Spence was one of Britain's pioneering photographers. Born into a working-class London family, she worked for many years as a studio photographer. Her political concerns led to documentary photography. Soon after completing her degree in the theory and practice of photography, she discovered she had breast cancer. Through her struggle to come to terms with the illness, to find non-invasive treatments and to share her experience with others, she developed unique ways of using photography.
Cultural Sniping brings together a wide range of Jo Spence's photographs and writings for the first time. Through images and texts she explores complex issues of gender, class, health and the body, and their impact on her understanding of personal history and the construction of identity.
Cultural Sniping includes images from Spence's early work in documentary photography and from her pioneering photo-therapy projects, undertaken in collaboration with other photographers. In her later work Spence faces up to the experience of illness and dying, and
Cultural Sniping reproduces work from her
Return to Nature and
Death Mask series, in which she tries to come to terms with the reality of death. Jo Spence's commitment to engaging with personal experience, political understanding and critical theory make her writing and photography a vital contribution to our understanding of the politics of representation.
