Interesting travel read.......2007-03-17

I've actually read this twice already and thoroughly enjoyed it each time. I travel a lot as well (for work and for fun) and hearing Tanya's retelling of her experiences in some of the same countries where I have traveled was very interesting. I could relate to many things yet she had some entirely new and different takes on things, which I enjoyed reading.

Tanya's honesty and openess in sharing real emotions and internal conflicts makes her so human to me. With each new picture (chapter), I felt as if she pulled up a chair beside me and brought the story sparked by the picture to life. I am a captive audience and will revisit the stories at leisure to gather more of their richness of content and language.

This book not only covers Ghana but also parts of Burkina Faso and Mali. I always love books that are written by women it glues you to the book, books written by women are full of emotions and explanations of other people's behavior and thoughts.

This book was really excellent. After reading her book, I feel like I know Tanya. Her writing is very accessible. I learned a lot about Africa that I didn't know. I don't have the guts to travel through Africa like her, but after reading her book, I feel like I have done it. Pick it up, you'll love it!

I am new to Baltimore Album Blocks and was disappointed that there were no sample color blocks provided in the book at all. I would recommend this book only to those well versed in Baltimore Album blocks who don't need to see pictures of blocks for guidance on color selection.

Defenately NOT a book for beginner appliquers!Patterns are given in divisions of four, although a black and white picture of the complete block is given at the top corner.If you have made Baltimore Album quilts already,then this is a wonderful supplement to you library.If you are a beginner and courageous,then charge ahead and buy this book.

Great guide to the lesser-known trails!.......2000-08-07

Original Post (2000): This book is great if you're looking for places that are off the beaten path. For example: instead of going to Muir Woods to see redwoods (and hordes of tourists), head off to Heritage Grove in La Honda for a chance to be one-on-one with the mighty trees (and check out the banana slugs as well!). I've only hiked about 4 of the 70+ trails so far, but they have all been worthwhile. Highly recommended!

Three years later, this now lovingly-worn book has accompanied me on a dozen more hikes, from Mendocino to Big Sur. Friends and visitors are always amazed at how I've been able to magically find these spectacular places! The Appendices with Suggested Hikes are quite useful -- I have yet to be disappointed with the "Grand Views" of various parts of the Bay Area, for example. I can thank this book for providing many special memories, photos, and aching limbs (hey, the author was not joking about those "strenuous" hikes!).

Oh, I also purchased another Marc Soares book, "100 Hikes in the San Francisco Bay Area". While some hikes do overlap with this book, I'd recommend as a nice companion volume -- especially if you live inland (like me) and don't always have time to head to the coast.

The photographs alone will inspire gardeners to rework their entire garden. Not only does the book identify each plant in the photographs, but tells you how to maintain the look, gives insider secrets, and is interspersed with Tony Lord's witty prose. My favorite gardening book.

Mel Bochner (b. 1940) is considered a pioneer of the Post-Minimal and Conceptual art movements. Perhaps best known for his paintings, sculptures, and drawings, Bochner became deeply involved with photography in the mid- to late 1960s, although most of these works have only recently been exhibited. This significant book provides the first critical look at a virtually unknown body of Bochner's extremely varied photographs dating from 1966-1969. Some 75 of his photographs are presented, many in color and most published for the first time. Also included are a number of Bochner's drawings that directly informed his photographic works. Scott Rothkopf explores the crucial role of photography in Bochner's artistic development as well as key issues in the relation of photography to Minimal and Conceptual art. In Bochner's photography, Rothkopf argues, a clear arc can be traced from his grappling with Minimalism toward a more rigorous and nuanced articulation of Conceptual art. Examining this shift, the author compares Bochner's work with that of other artists who were engaged with photography during this period, among them Robert Smithson, Sol LeWitt, and Bruce Nauman. For Bochner and others, Rothkopf concludes, photography was used as a response to the limits of minimal sculpture and helped make possible the birth of Conceptual art. The book also features an essay by Elisabeth Sussman on the relevance of Bochner's 1966 film experiments to his later photographic projects.

A delightful telling of the harsh life and triumph of a Chinese daughter and her struggles in Merced, California. Written by a third generation westernized Chinese daughter, the book tells about her mother and grandparent's life in the Oy Quong Laundry.

An excellent read.
