Proving the existence of angels.......2002-03-08
This is an interesting book that is divided into two major parts. The first is an attempt to tell you everything you every wanted to know about angels: Angels in song, Catholic tradition, and the Bible, all about the good and evil agencies not only in the Bible but in Gnostic literature, Satan, the love affairs between women and fallen angels, Patristic and Medieval angelologies, in later literature, the visual arts, in music and, finally, angel-like beings in other religions. The second part of the book is actually one long philosophical argument that attempts to prove that angels are scientifically possible. The argument starts with attempting to show that angels are clearly conceived to be a form of suprahumannes and that this view is compatible with modern theories of evolution. In many respects, the first part of the book is laying the foundation for this claim.

Product Description
Anya Vaedrin is a woman of extraordinary talents. A singer by trade, she has earned the nickname Angel with her voice, her white hair, and deep blue eyes-and a secret. In a time when telepaths hold positions of power and empaths are their weak discards, Anya is an explosive mix of the two talents. Able to both read emotions and cause others to feel anything she wishes, from joy to fear and pleasure to pain, Anya is a new breed that the telepaths would give anything to possess-or destroy. Pursued to the ends of human occupied space by a telepathic assassin, Anya has one last hope of safety before she must brave alien territory. Far Reach Station is known for its liberal policies towards alien species, but would they give sanctuary to one of their own when she is wanted by the Telepath Guild? Anya's prospects seem grim when she is confronted by Jason Salvatore, the surly second in command of the station. And Captain Marta Jamison makes the station a dubious refuge when it becomes clear that she has an agenda all her own.

A Review of Angels & Ministers of Grace.......2006-01-30
Michelle O'Leary has written a great Sci-Fi adventure and love story with her second novel Angels and Ministers of Grace. All the characters-whether human or alien-are well written and come to life on the pages. The worlds she creates for her characters have the complexities that Sci-Fi lovers enjoy, and the romance that evolves between Anya and Jason is a wild ride itself! Full of emotion, world-building, and alien creatures, this is a wonderful story to curl up with and read in one sitting.

Customer Reviews:
Good pictures, but not much else.......2003-02-28
I bought this book after I'd been here for a couple of months. Luckily, I already had the Lonely Planet's Guide to Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. The Landmark Guide has good pictures, but not much else. I'd only recommend it if you already have the Lonely Planet Guide and some experience with the island. It will not help you find a good hotel or good restaurant, and for some reasons skips a lot of the good places to see. A big disappointment.
A Fine Introduction, but Not Really a Guide.......2001-09-06
Having just spent more than 2 weeks in Iceland, I've had a good opportunity to see which guides worked and which ones didn't. To begin with, Cathy Harlow's excellent book is more along the lines of the DK Guidebooks: excellent pictures, printed on heavy glossy paper, and short on up-to-date, detailed info on accommodations and restaurants.
In other words, this is a book to read and enjoy BEFORE going to Iceland, but it takes up too much weight for the info it conveys. Let's face it, the 20-kilo weight restriction for international flights, together with the even more severe practical limitations for people who use public transportation where there are no porters or native bearers are strong reasons to travel as light as possible.
Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading this book and would strongly recommend both the texts and photographs as an excellent introduction to a fascinating travel destination. Used in conjunction with the Rough Guide to Iceland or, even better, the updated Lonely Planet Guide to Iceland, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands, it is a worthwhile book to read and to keep for reference.
An Excellent Read.......2001-07-29
I recommend this fantastic book to anyone intersted in Iceland. Forget the other guide books, none of them compare to this complete guideto Iceland.
The best guide... a wonderful book.......2001-04-25
"This is simply the best guide for the independent traveler yet published. The information is cogent, well organized and well presented - especially for anyone who wants to fly to Iceland, rent a car and just explore the country independently without a set itinerary. The nine chapters divide the country into geographical sections organized around the "Ring Road" (the highway which encircles the country) and are packed with pertinent facts and interesting information. The choices are laid out knowledgably and interestingly. There are numerous maps showing auto routes, hiking trails and places of interest. There are suggested walks and sidebars on Icelandic history and nature in each chapter plus a fact file in the back that tells you everything else you need to know. The chapter on Reykjavík not only includes a multitude of things to do in the capital itself, but outlines suggested interesting day excursions one can make by car or bus with Reykjavík as home base... really great for the first time visitor unfamiliar with distances and the time it takes to travel them. Another chapter focuses on traveling through the uninhabited highlands and includes detailed maps and notes on auto routes, jeep routes, walking trails, mountain huts, camping areas and more. Author Cathy Harlow, lives in Iceland, has trained there as a tour guide and since 1987 has shared her enthusiasm for the country with hundreds of visitors. Perhaps that is why the Landmark Visitors Guide so beautifully intuits exactly what the independent traveler needs to know. This is a wonderful guidebook and long overdue.....
Great ALL AROUND guide.......2000-11-11
The hardest thing for me to find in a guide book is a good balance between what is written and the pictures. I hate lenghty descriptions. This book does it better than any other I have seen - really outstanding pictures that save many words describing the locations, simple maps but enough to give you an idea and a lot of helpful advice and tips. Really feel that if you are only going to buy one book to plan your trip to Iceland - this should be it.

Book Description
Following the success of "Scotland," "The Lake District," and "France," Scotland's most renowned landscaper photographer, Colin Baxter, now gives us a personal portrayal of the wonder that is Iceland.
Iceland sits astride the Mid-Atlantic ridge and is home to about 200 volcanoes, whose eruptions are frequent. Deep fjords fringe the coast and only the coastal lowlands are habitable.
This book is a personal selection of photographs from Colin Baxter's travels in this remarkable volcanic landscape, including photography of the 1998 eruption of Mount Hekla, the largest glacier in Iceland, Vatanajokull, and an array of geyser and waterfalls that make up this unique landscape. From the famous blue lagoon to the cliff scenery of the most westerly point in Europe, Látrabjarg, we encounter a land of ice and snow, sunshine and rainbows. Following the success of "Scotland," "The Lake District," and "France", Scotland's most renowned landscaper photographer, Colin Baxter, now gives us a personal portrayal of the wonder that is Iceland. Also Recommended: "England, the Nature of the Land," "France."
Customer Reviews:
Low picture quality.......2005-05-03
It's been 4 hours, since I returned from Iceland, and one of my first things to do was to cancel my pending order of this book. Out in Iceland, I could have a look at what's inside, and quite a few of the pictures were disappointing. From someone with a limited amount of time (say, one week) and budget category equipment, this would be a nice book, but not from a professional photographer. Contrast is low in many of the pictures, and some of them were not taken at the right time of day (or right weather conditions).
From this point of view, the book 'Lost in Iceland' was way better.
I don't recommend it, if you want really nice shots.
Baxter ventures beyond the Post-card.......2001-08-23
Well known for his picture post-card views of Scotland, Colin Baxter has taken his work to a more satisfying level with this book of his Iceland photographs. Accumulated over many years' visits -this book provides an invaluable catalouge of what to see should you be visiting this unique country. Photographers and those with a special interest in landscape will find the map showing the photo locations invaluable. Good design, adequate printing, lots of photos, some very good indeed. Icelandair should be very pleased with its impact on tourism: very low Puffin count too!

Customer Reviews:
Looks Good, Litle Help.......2007-10-09
This is a nice looking book with lots of great pictures. Thats about where the positives end. There is a lot of misinformation in this book. The information seems to be from a much earlier edition. Advice on the setup of a marine aquarium is based on info from the 70s. Some of the information about the fish is completely false. For a beginning aquarium hobbyist, this is not a good choice, it will lead you astray.

Customer Reviews:
A Definitive Reference.......2007-01-10
Mexican Silver by Penny Morrill and Carole Berk is the definitive reference for anyone interested in 20th Century Mexican silver jewelry. Not only is it brimming with information on the jewelry, the background biographies of the working life of Spratling, Davis, Aguilar, Margot and many other giants of this industry are well written and a darn good read. After spending several hours reading the book I the expertise that I would have gained had I taken a 3 credit college course. There is a general price guide in the back of the book which, from my experience, accurate and reasonable. The only observation I might make is that there is not as much information on silver hollow ware and decorative pieces. For myself, my main interest is in the jewelry so I was not disappointed.
The Amazon price can't be beat. Before I bought the book through Amazon I had not seen it for less than $60, its list price. I paid less than $40 on Amazon!
A Wonderful Book that Doesn't Pertain to Me.......2007-01-10
You have to admire the research that went into this sumptuous volume, also the photos. As a (very) amateur collector, this work, I'm sorry to say, doesn't pertain much to me. Still, I'm happy to have it on my shelf.
Great overview for collectors.......2007-01-09
I recommend this book to anyone interested in Mexican Silver jewelry of the 1930's - 50's. It gives a wonderful overview of the history of this unique craft. It also provides knowledgeable information about which pieces and designers are most collectible, with high-quality photos of many of the best pieces. I started collecting Mexican Silver jewelry 10 years ago out of sentiment, because my mother and grandmother used to wear it. Learning the history of this type of jewelry has made me even more fond of the genre, and has given me the knowledge to collect more valuable pieces.
Mexican Silver.......2007-01-09
I was disapointed in the book personally.. It's just a great big heavy picture book. (eye candy)
I believe a collector would appreciate a non vague value guides as well which this book does not have. The value guides are exp: Margot necklaces - 600.00-2500.00+ huh? What is my blue enamel circle necklace worth?? 600.00 or 2500.00?!
This is a book about a select few mexican silver makers and their life stories. (few pages on unknowns)
Perhaps a good book to have on a coffee table but that is not what I needed.
I had hoped this book would help to identify mexican marks I have that can't be found on the internet, all of the silversmiths listed in the book can be and are well documented online. There are personal accounts as well but for the most part this is a coffee table book.
It is very expensive so I hope I can help anyone looking for exact value guides from buying the wrong book.
If you like to collect Mexican jewelry you probably should eventually get this book, but as far as a good value guide line for Mexican non-well known Jewelry go else where.
A superb guide for Mexican silver collectors .......2006-09-21
An antique dealer turned me on to this book and I finally bought it this past summer at an antique expo here in Portland, Oregon. The price tag is a bit spendy, but the information within, along with the masterful photogrpahy, makes this book well worth the money. Any serious collector of Mexican silver needs to have this book in their library. The authors give readers an inside look at the artists that have made mid-century to contemporary silversmithing in Taxco what it is today.

I like this book........2007-06-10
I like this book.
Its strength is in the design aspect of planting design. Nelson discusses seasonal effects of plants, lines, form, texture, color, scale and angle of vision. He also explores some basic design principles: repetition, variety, balance, emphasis, sequence and scale.

Book Description
Utah is a magical place. Muench followed the rhythms of the seasons, studied the harmonies of color, and translated the elusive qualities of light to create the images in this beautiful book.
Customer Reviews:
beautiful, but few pages and paperback.......2003-12-19
I bought this book after seeing one with the same title and photographer in a bookstore while traveling. I thought it was the same book, but this one is paperback and only 80 pages (1/4" thick). The pictures are beautiful, but if you're looking for a coffee table book, this isn't a good choice--it's too thin and flimsy. You'll need to be careful to make sure you don't damage the pictures while viewing them (e.g., by creasing them if you open the book too wide).
A pretty book about Utah.......2002-08-14
Utah deserves its PR-created title as "The Best of the West". When it comes to bright, even garish, multi-colored rock formations, canyons, mesas, arches, pillars, cliffs, and grottoes, Utah has no equal. What would be a national park or monument in any other state is a feature whose name isn't even known to most locals here. From Zion to Dinosaur, and all points south and east, Utah is a scenic wonderland par excellence.
This is the second of two books, bearing the same title, by photographer David Muench. Here, the companion writer is Ann Zwinger, the renowned Western naturalist. Zwinger's writing, of course, is peerless. In a brilliant essay, she captures the nature of this beautiful, but difficult, land and those who have settled it. I commend it highly.
Muench's photography is another matter. The subject matter is excellently chosen. In this book, as opposed to its predecessor, Muench has left behind the obvious tourist magnets such as Zion and Bryce Canyon, to focus on such little known, but equally striking areas of beauty and wilderness, such as the San Rafael Swell, an area that could easily be a national park. This is commendable.
However, as with most of Muench's work, undue emphasis is placed on use of the wide-angle and, particularly, the telephoto lens. The result is pretty pictures, but ones that are deceptive to the traveler/reader. No one is ever going to see, except through a telephoto lens, the things Muench shows in this book. You may detect that I don't care for this form of presentation, and you are right. I would much rather see photographs by Ray Manley or Fred Hirschmann, who obtain items of surpassing beauty without visual distortion being necessary.
So, while the book is a nice loaner from a library perhaps, I was disappointed after having bought it.
A Palpable Love of Utah.......2002-03-14
I went to school with David Muench's sister. When she bragged a bit about him (and rightfully so), I began to follow his work. When I lived in Arizona in the early 60s, I saw his photographs everywhere. His images have become so much a part of my consiousness that I often wonder how many of the descriptions in my book were inspired by "the real thing" and how many reflect Muench's vision.
Muench's work is everywhere. It's in Arizona Highways, calendars, and in the libraries of many who love the Intermountain West.
This book is pure pleasure. Anyone who loves Utah will want to turn its pages and keep a copy with their other coffee table treasures.

Majestic Landscape Such as This Deserves to Be in Color.......2004-12-08
Black and white photography is artistic, but doesn't do this area of the country justice.
Also, I appreciate the author's concern for preserving the land, but government protection could quite possibly be the WORST way to do it because it brings in bus loads of the very people who will damage it. Just admire it from a book or ignore it.
