no excuse for a guidebook without maps.......2006-10-13

One of the most important things when traveling with children is to be able to guage how far apart things are, and how much walking is involved. To do that, you need either very descriptive, detailed text or a good map. This book lacks either one of those things. It clusters attractions by area, but even a limited area can mean a lot of walking - tiring and frustrating when your travel companion is 6 years old.

This book's "hotel section" was a very unfunny joke, and listed very, very few options - while London has many to offer families in differing types of lodging. It would also be helpful to have the restaurant info in the geographical section where it is found - so that you can pick out a lunch spot as you're selecting your sightseeing options.

In a child specific guide, I'd expect some info on local laws or customs concerning children. For example, what are the car seat laws in England? What are the laws concerning children in pubs, or restaurants with full bars?

How about a bit more info on food and drink, especially what's popular for kids? Tips for finding grocery stores with selections of diapers or formula? (if you'd ever spent 3 hours trying to find the right size diapers in a foreign country, you'd know exactly how crucial THAT info is).

The writer offers interesting descriptions for sightseeing, but there is so much more to traveling with a kid, especially a very young one. How about a list of reliable, vetted babysitting agencies?

Useful with good ideas.......2006-08-22

I used this book to help plan a recent family trip to London. It was very useful and gave some great ideas about things to do with kids of various ages. I've been to London a few times before, but never with children, so I wanted a book that would give us ideas on kid friendly activities. This was great in that regard. I gave it four stars and not five because there were no pictures or maps, which would have been nice. I basically used this as a supplement to my Eyewitness London Guide (which was fantastic). I wound up having to carry two books though when I would have preferred to only carry one. If you use this as a supplement it's great, but don't expect this to be your only book for getting around London.

What a fantastic book! I have read it from cover to cover, and it is my primary resource book. From a discussion of diet, to the different kinds of cockatiels to different behaviors and what they mean as well as some advice on breeding -- wow!

If you have not bought a book about Cockatiels, or even if you have, this book *must* be added to your library.

But Diane Grindol is a genius!!! Her book cockatiels for dummies is excellent, informational, and entertaining. I'm sure this is too. I recommend buying both books before getting your cockatiel! If you already have one/some, get these books anyway.

I just bought this book because I just bought a cockatiel. I
have had cockatiels when I was younger & needed a refresher course. This book has alot of information on nutrition, training, colorings of cockatiels etc. All the information you'll ever need!

I am an avian health care advisor and author who offers assistance to those who are thinking about acquiring a bird, or to those are experiencing diffculties with bird/s they already have. My experience with birds and other animals stems back to when I was just a very little girl, but I have foucsed primarily on parrots for the past 11 years.
Nearly two years ago when I was presented with the opportunity to rescue a Cockatiel, and since I lack in experience when it comes to this species, I queried my avian list serv buddies about a good book on Tiels. The response was overwhelmingly that I should get a copy of The Complete Book of Cockatiels by Diane Grindol. I might add that several of those who recommended this book to me have bred Tiels for over 20 years, and although some no longer breed, they own Tiels. I got a copy right away, and I am so glad I did. This is an excellant book for many reasons...
Diane does cover all the topics necessary for someone who is interested in getting a Cockatiel eg. requirementes of the species, and the topics a beginner would find necessary eg. ongoing care, emergencies, etc. but she also includes information that experienced Tiel folks would find very interesting eg. visual sexing and genetics. The cover is so beautiful, and is one of a kind as far as I am concerned...it is just beautiful. The pictures inside are not only beautiful but informative as well.
Generally, when I need info. on a particular species, I will go and buy all the books I can find about it, but after reading Diane's book, I didn't do that!

What a wonderful book.......2001-09-26

This book is a wonderful overview of Cockatiels. It covers all the basics: Feeding, behavior, health, basic genetic info, etc. It also has wonderful pictures. I would recommend this book to not only people with cockatiels, but to owners of other parrots, too. Great book!

Keith Pinn, author of Paktong: The Chinese Alloy in Europe 1680-1820, inherited a collection of Paktong from his father to which he has added pieces and done extensive research resulting in this book. Paktong, a rare Chinese alloy of copper, zinc, and nickel, was imported during the 18th century and used by European craftsman to make wares in imitation of silver. It was not until around 1820 that sucessful attempts to copy Paktong resulted in what is now known as German silver. This book analyzes the Pinn Collection to identify and understand objects made from Paktong and how these differ and can be recognized from those made of German silver.

I loved this book! The idea is very original, and the photos are beautiful. As a gardener, I have been trying for years to get color in my yard all year, and this book was just what I needed. Soil carbon sequestration can play a strategic role in controlling the increase of CO ₂ in the atmosphere and thereby help mitigate climatic change. Well-written study of the Basque witch trials.......1997-02-14

Henningsen's work is an intriguing study of this overlooked era in Spanish history. He walks the reader from the beginnings of the witch trials (very similar in formation to the more popularly studied Salem witch trials) through the intercession by the Spanish Inquisition and to Antonio Salzar de Frias' posting of the Edicts of Grace. This is a book of political and theological intrigue and a mystery thrown in for good measure. While reading it, I kept wondering what was going to happen next even though this is a history text and not a novel, though there is more than enough information and a strong enough plot within the history to fashion a novel. If you are a lover of history (especially historical texts), this is one book that is difficult to put down. Even if you are not a lover of history texts, the "plot" of this study is one that will probably keep you hooked until then end.
