The book presents descriptions and illustrations of 343 species of Rhodopohyta found in Hawaiian waters, along with keys and remarks about them. These species represent perhaps 85% of the warm-water red taxa in the Pacific. The number and composi-tion of Hawaiian Rhodophyta have turned out to be far richer than had been expected, including many one-of-a-kind geographic distribution records, giving the flora a large number of unexpected taxa previously described only from the Caribbean Sea, Indian Ocean, or Australian coast and Great Barrier Reef.

Description:
External chemical signals used by scleractinian corals to recognize suitable substrata for larval settlement and metamorphosis were identified from crustose coralline red algae (CCA). A fragment of coral rubble with CCA induced larval metamorphosis of the scleractinian coral Pseudosiderastrea tayamai. A natural inducer and compounds that enhanced its effect in larval metamorphosis were isolated from the methanol extracts of coral rubble with CCA. A bromotyrosine derivative, 11-deoxyfistularin-3 (10^-^7 M) isolated from the CCA, induced the metamorphosis of P. tayamai larvae (27.5+/-24.0%). In the presence of fucoxanthinol (10^-^9 M) and fucoxanthin (10^-^9 M), the percentage of metamorphosis induced by the bromotyrosine derivative was further enhanced to 87.8+/-13.0 and 88.4+/-17.8%, respectively. Both carotenoids are also found in the coral rubble with CCA. These results suggest that bromotyrosine derivative and carotenoids have a synergistic effect in the metamorphosis of P. tayamai larvae. The synergistic effect provides a higher selectivity for recruitment than a single-component natural inducer for recognizing suitable substrata for larval metamorphosis. Thus, the effect might offer a survival advantage for benthic marine invertebrates.

The introduction chapter contains an overview of the guide as well as general information about the history, land, climate, flora, and fauna. This introductory chapter also includes an outline of the range of activities available in the Florida Keys and the Everglades National Park. The next chapter, Travel Information takes a deeper look at the ins and outs of traveling to this area. This section not only includes important information about costs, transportation, and getting to Florida but also includes helpful tips about the best time of the year to visit the area and what to wear and do on and off-season.

The rest of the chapters in Florida Keys & Everglades National Park Adventure Guide focus on the four main areas of the Keys (Upper Keys; Marathon and the Middle Keys; Lower Keys; and Key West) and the national park. Each of these chapters includes the sections At a Glance; Getting Here & Getting Around; Area History & Highlights; Sightseeing; Adventures; Where to Stay; Where to Eat; and Nightlife. However, there are also a few unique aspects within these sections and within this book in general. For instance, all the information contained in these sections is based upon the authors' real life experiences, no internet or third hand research is included. This allows the author to explain the various topics in a much smoother, conversational style given the reader a feeling of insider knowledge. This aspect also allow the author to rate lodgings (naming some as author's picks), give guidelines on the costs of meals (using a dollar sign rating system), and make recommendations on what areas to visit and activities to do depending upon your vacation time.

Another unique aspect to this guide is that it focuses on active things to do. This book does describe sightseeing potentials but also looks at fishing, diving, and snorkeling opportunities; formal and informal nature and eco-tours; and describes variety of cultural events and other activities. Many of these activities are low cost or no cost anytime opportunities that can be enjoyed by walking. These unique aspects make the information in this book more accessible to those who like being active when they travel and those who would rather go fishing or birding than shopping or visiting the local museums.

From Seed to Sow, but What Next?.......2000-04-09

The latest installment of the Martha Stewart book collection is, of course, filled with extravagant, glossy pictures, tips from insiders, and suggested retailers from whom to buy certain products which, presumably, Martha uses herself. However, this tiny book leaves something to be desired. First, several terms are introduced in the meat of the book that are never defined in the glossary or elsewhere (e.g. "deadheading"). Second, the instructions stop at the outdoor-planting phase, thus failing to inform readers on how best to prune plants and how to harvest seeds directly from plants for future use. Third, there are a number of typographical errors not usually associated with Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. While the plant index toward the back of the guide is useful, as is the section on tips for eradicating garden pests, your best bet is to purchase a more thorough (and, yes, more expensive) book from Burpee or Better Homes and Gardens if you want an in-depth and all-inclusive guide to the world of gardening from seed.

This is bright, pretty wrapping paper that will please any lover of art and color. Im saving this for someone special :) The quibbles I have: there are artifacts during the printing (which you wouldnt find in Hallmark giftwrap), the black "leading" was too thick IMO and detracted from the overall look and the gift cards are quite small and you need to cut them out yourself.
