The Cactus Family
ASIN: 0520231570 |
Book Description
The Cactaceae family, with about sixteen hundred species, is cultivated worldwide for fruits, forage, fodder, and even as a vegetable. Cacti are recognized for their attractive flowers, special stem shapes, and ability to tolerate drought. Because of their efficient use of water and other adaptations, biological and agronomic interest in cacti has soared. These fascinating plants also have much to teach us about biodiversity and conservation. Yet a current, synthetic, wide-ranging reference on cacti has not been available until now. This comprehensive book, compiled by a well-known cactus biologist, includes authoritative, up-to-date chapters by thirty-five contributors from around the world on topics ranging from evolution to biotechnology. It is the first book of its kind to compile information on cactus biology, ecology, and uses in one convenient place.
The first half of the book provides a thorough overview of cactus biology and morphology and discusses the environmental and conservation issues that affect the plants. It includes a discussion of the evolution of the family, paying particular attention to new genetic and molecular approaches. The second half of the book focuses on the practical concerns of cultivating cacti, such as pest control and diseases, horticultural and forage applications, and techniques for agronomy. Other chapters cover the different markets for cacti and products that are made from them.
This unique volume will be a reliable and informative reference for ecologists and environmentalists, agriculturists, plant biologists, and anyone seriously interested in these remarkable plants.

Advanced book for specialists.......2003-12-20
This is an advanced book, with plenty of black and white photos, but no color photos. This book consists of fifteen review chapters written by established experts and new contributors. The book description states that Cacti: Biology and Uses is the first book of its kind to compile information on cactus biology, ecology and uses.
Because this book covers a wide variety of topics, such as biology, morphology, conservation, pollination, and pest control, the writing is quite advanced in several different subject areas. For example, a physiologist may totally understand the chapter on shoot anatomy and morphology (Chapter 2), but may have less understanding of the chapter about breeding and biotechnology (Chapter 15). In Chapter 10 alone (Cactus Pear Fruit Production) a reader finds economic content with a supply and demand analysis and agronomic content with fertilizer and irrigation information. This seems to validate the book's description as a compilation of cacti information.
As previously mentioned, Cacti: Biology and Uses does not have any color photos, but it does have many, quality black and white photos, as well as many tables and figures. A basic table of contents is printed in the front, and then, each chapter begins with a more detailed table of contents. Each chapter ends with a conclusion and an extensive list of literature cited. An index, with some "See" and "See also" references, is provided in the back.
This is a high quality book who are interested in the biology, ecology or uses of a unique family of plants.

Sardinia/Sardegna in July.......2003-07-28
Sardinia is not one of the easiest places to spend a holiday. I went with a friend this July and had two bonuses that may not apply to everyone who travels there. The first was that my companion spoke Italain, the second, we rented the house of a friend of hers and we had a car, I guess that makes three.
We landed on the ferry with car at the Golfo di Arancia. Our destination was on the south west coast. The driving was one of the hard parts of the trip. The larger roads are easy enough to navigate but the secondary roads can get very confusing and those lower graded than that can be impossible. Road signs don't always lead you in the right direction, and somtimes actually stop before you get there, and so it's so easy to find yourself lost and waisting time.
July is HOT. For a New Yorker like me who is addicted to air-conditioning this created another challenge.
With that said, did the book help? I felt that the author described places in an unbiased way, which made it up to me to decide if it was worth going on the road in the heat to find. The main island and the two others in our area, San Pietro & Sant'Antioco have some fantastic beaches that make all the troubles worth while. Still the directions were a little weak. From my experience it was best to ask locals, Don't count on English to help.
We checked the book on a daily basis, followed directions for places to eat and were not disapionted. All in all there were areas that lacked info but this booked was a real help.
Enjoy your trip!
For the non-jet setters.......2001-01-09
Having planned and taken a trip to Sardinia, I can add that this book was very helpful. In planning this trip, my girlfriend and I found it next to impossible to find information on Sardinia. The information on the web was ok at best, and the coverage of Sardinina by the all encompassing "Italy" guide books was almost non-existent. Everything pointed in the direction of Costa Smeralada, but since we were on a budget, this jet setting town was out of the question.
Taking a trip to Sardinia during their off-season was no walk in the park... the limited bus service got our trip off on the wrong foot. But after getting to Santa Teresa di Gallura, we spent 5 days at a hotel in a room with a balcony overlooking a beach and one of THE MOST AMAZING views we have ever seen. This place cost us only $40 a night, and this Guide Book was the only one that reviewed the hotel.
I would recommend this book just for steering us in the right direction and pointing us to this hotel. A definite must have if you're planning on visiting this beautiful island and can't afford the Costa Smeralda.
reaction.......2000-12-29
I just want to react to the reaction of the Sardinian in Los Angeles: the photo on the cover may not be Sardinian, but it is definitely Alberobello neither, as at Alberobello those tiles are unknown. I think the picture doesn't even hail from Italy, but perhaps from Portugal. Or it is maybe the house of a Portuguese, emigrated to Sardinia...
The picture on the cover IS NOT Sardinian!.......2000-04-18
With much disappointment as a sardinian, the picture on the cover is not a picture of anything sardinian. In the picture you can see Alberobello's (Southern Italy) trulli, constructions that are similar to sardinian nuraghi (which I suppose should have been put there), just Nuraghi are over 2000 (two thousand) years older than trully, and much, much bigger. If you want to write a guide, do it right. Would you buy a guide of the USA that has a picture of the Eiffel Tower on it ? I wouldn't.

A Must Have For Golden Owners!.......2007-04-01
My husband and I are planning on getting our first dog (together) and it will definitely be a Golden Retriever. I grew up with these dogs and I'm a veterinary technician, so I'm pretty familiar with the breed and all the potential health problems. Since this is my first dog, on my own, I wanted to make sure I do things right and not overlook anything.
This book is an excellent reference for the first time owner or even a seasoned one.
There's detailed information on the history of the breed, descriptions and illustrations of American and British standards, what to look for when chosing a puppy or dog, how to feed & proper nutrition, proper grooming, diseases and conditions that are common for dogs in general to ones more specific to Goldens. This book even tells you how to perform a quick physical on your dog so that you can learn what's normal and what's not, enabling you to identify potential problems as soon as they arise.
One thing that surprised me was a section on blood tests and an explanation of some of the more common tests done on dogs. There's also a section on first aid, artificial respiration, and CPR. Another valuable section, is one on training. It goes beyond the basics and includes an introduction to field, agility, and conformation.
There is such a wealth of in-depth information to make this book an essential.
Advanced handbook........2004-07-09
The personnel publishing this manual have contrinuted thought to the patrons that have recently purchased this animal. Contains explanatory categories, insighting assistance for maintainence and essential divisions. This particular guide is more advanced than it's annotated predecessors, which are not recommended in the economical area. Category fluency at it's peak, no truncating to produce a shorter, less fluent, inexpensive hardback. D. Coile, without slightest doubt, has expertise in animals and other natural lore. Chronologically a towering example, an economical and cheap purchase and most likely well spent publish.
A Goldmine of Information!.......2002-09-06
The Golden Retriever Handbook fills a niche for owners and breeders who are tired of the same elementary information offered in breed books but who are not interested in reading pedigrees or a kennel-by-kennel history of the breed. Instead it provides in-depth state-of-the-art information about Golden retriever medicine and physiology, hereditary health problems, nutrition, genetics and behavior--information that can make you an expert at caring for your dog. But it's not all work; there's information on training for field work, and an introduction to hunting tests, field trials, obedience trials, agility trials, and conformation shows. And of course there's just some fun stuff so you can have a good time with your dog. The text is intersperced with stunning photos of Goldens in action (no page after page of boring show photos!) and even enough information about record-setting Goldens to get you motivated to best them. It is the complete Handbook for making the most of your life with a Golden.
The book is okay, but that's it.......2002-05-14
I just bought my first Golden Retriever in March and promptly ran out to buy every book I could find on this wonderful breed. And read several more! This was my least favorite book on the subject. It has beautiful photography, no doubt, but not enough useful information on the breed. I had much better luck with other titles.
An excellent book about Golden Retriever........2001-03-04
This one of the best book I've ever read about GR. It give me a good information on purchasing, training, feeding, health problem, and much more. But there is 1 problem. The book doesn't tell the information on housebreaking. I strongly recommended this book for those who wants to buy Golden Retriever and for those who wants information on Golden Retriever.

Golden Retriever (359/1)
great concise "overall".......2004-03-24
This book was purchased for me shortly after I bought my golden puppy. She is now 8 months old - I have refered to it extensively all through this new undertaking. The layout is the best I've seen, illustrated with "how to" photos and filled with relevent and needed facts and information. It is a quick and fascinating read, covering what you want to know. Each time I go through it, I find something I hadn't seen before.
Essential dog book.......2003-04-28
If you want a purebred, but not sure which one to get, make sure you read the books by Bruce Fogle. This book covers such things as basic commands, crate training, first aid, breeding and so much more. The book isn't long and I found it so helpful.
Very Good and Helpful Book.......2002-07-11
I found this book very helpful. It has graphs that have trainability, house trainability, etc. that compares them to different breeds. It is quite useful in the training section too. It also has a history on the dog, and just about everything you want to know about Goldens.
Good value for money!.......2000-06-30
Whether you're considering getting a Golden or you already have one, this is a useful and fun book to read. It's informative, up-to-date, easy to understand and inexpensive. Definitly worthwhile.

Gorgeously photographed, one-of-a-kind book!.......1998-09-04
This is the first book that captures the unique culture of Thrace through extensive photographs of ancient treasures from museums throughout Bulgaria. I am happy to see that all photographs are accompanied with captions providing a wealth of information about the objects as well as info in which museums they can be seen. The preface details the history, culture, and religion of Thrace, and it's filled with fascinating facts. It gives you deeper understanding of the political and cultural complexity of the ancient world and the relationships among Thracians, Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, etc. There is a timetable at the end that conviniently displays the various periods in the development of Thrace parallel to famous world events.
Needless to say, the book is a must for everybody interested in ancient history. It also makes a great coffee table book, unique and fascinating like Thrace itself.

Two self-smitten garden-philes find each other........1998-07-31
After reading this book, I have a) a somewhat revived interest in gardening (with some new planting ideas); 2) a deep aversion to ever having to read/watch anything by Mr.Phillips, who is completely self-absorbed with his own knowledge; 3) bemused speculations about What Might Have Been, vis a vis what seemed an almost flirtatious beginning between the two, which then subsided once Land found herself a guy [after that, copious references to children and mates--before, nothing]! An interesting read for gardeners, but not a great one--this book's a borrower, not a buyer (sorry, amazon.com)..
An Enchanting Correspondence.......1997-07-13
The 3,OOO Mile Garden is a pure delight.
While full of useful gardening information, interesting recipes, unusual plants and vegetables, it is in no way dry or pedantic. It is instead a lively and spirited correspondence between two very unique gardeners- their gardens, their countries and their lives.

Gardeners are very interesting people!.......1997-06-28
Having seen the PBS series based on this book, I
was very anxious to actually read the book. I wasn't
disappointed. Meeting the challenge of one's own
ecosystem and making a garden work is interesting
reading. This book doubles that interest by going
back and forth between two completely different eco-
systems and two completely different gardeners.
Roger Phillips is in charge of a very public garden
in the center of London and enjoys not only working
with others but also conversing with visitors that are
a part of his daily routine. Leslie Land gets very
upset one morning when a strange woman wanders into
her garden to admire and comment on it. This is her
private domain and she considers the woman to be a
rude trespasser. Even Roger finds that difficult
to believe. As their friendship develops, however, they rely
more and more on the advice they receive from each
other and, as a novice gardener myself, I found
myself combining their expertise to benefit my own
garden.Very interesting reading.

A plausible reconstruction.......2005-09-05
Largely a rebuttal to claims of 'pan-deuteronomism', Person writes at a time when many assumptions about things deuteronom(ist)ic that have seemed settled since Noth are openly questioned in the perhaps unpromising search for a new consensus. An introduction (pp. 1-16) brings the reader up to date on the proliferating meanings assigned terminology of which the definition once appeared to have been agreed, as well as on the tendency to multiply redactional layers in the Deuteronomistic literature beyond the two (Harvard School) and three (Gttingen School) that until recently seemed a sufficient menu from which to choose. Against the perceived expansionistic tendencies of deuteronomistic influence and redactions, some scholars have leveled accusations of 'pan-Deuteronism'. In the face of this, Person defends a relatively broad definition of Deuteronomic (his preferred term) influence and literatures, as well as proposing 'a way out of the confusion' by means of a four-angled approach that considers (a) text-critical controls on redaction criticism, (b) post-exilic Deuteronomic redaction, (c) evidence from ANE scribal schools, and (4) the Deuteronomic school's social location in an oral culture.
A first chapter ('Redaction Criticism and Deuteronomic Literature', pp. 17-29) admits the redaction criticism has reached the limits of its ability to subdivide redactional layers by means of linguistic arguments, since 'all Deuteronomic redactors use Deuteronomic language'. However he is not prepared to question the validity of such distinctions, since to do so would lead to abandonment of criticism altogether. M. Weinfeld's Deuteronomy and the Deuteronomic Schools is accepted as a base-line statement on Deuteronomism based upon linguistic criteria, beyond which it is perhaps not wise to press further. The way out of this apparent impasse is to suppose post-exilic Deuteronomic redactional activity and to pursue this based upon text-critical criteria.
'The Deuteronomistic School in the Persian Period' (Chapter 2, pp. 31-63) fills out Person's point regarding Deuteronomistic editorial work in the post-exilic period, critiquing those who limit this to the Exile. For person, that scholarly assumption totters on the slender base that results from defining a terminus ante quem based solely upon the last-mentioned events in the work. The balance of the chapter surveys text-critical research since Qumran that indicate continued redactional work (post-LXX and on the MT) that bears the fingerprints of the Deuteronomists (a 'school', for Person, thus plural). Person complements his text-critical conclusions by questioning received wisdom about the exclusive relevance of DtrH's themes for an exilic audience, finding them just as pertinent in the post-exile. A final section offers an historical reconstruction of a Deuteronomistic school's return to the land under Persian sponsorship with sufficient infrastructure in place to support its semi-official duties.
Person's argument for the idea that biblical scribes were more than copyists will be strengthened if he can demonstrate that such was the cases across the ANE, and this is precisely what he argues in 'Scribal Schools in the Ancient Near East' (Chapter 3, pp. 65-81). Although Person shares the developing consensus that formal schools were not widespread in pre-exilic Israel, he does believe there is ample evidence for the formal training of scribes. In the exilic and post-exilic periods, the Persian empire made use of professional scribes. Person considers that the biblical portrayal of Ezra fits this institution. He believes that the Deuteronomic School returned to Yehud with Zerubbabel and finds precedent in Qumran scribal practices for a role that included not only copying but what we could today consider composition and redaction.
In his fourth chapter ('The Deuteronomic School in its Oral World', pp. 83-101), Person relies heavily upon the work of S. Niditch in an attempt to move the discussion away from individual authorship (a modern rather than ancient concept that is at home in oral cultures). Even text criticism goes awry when it understands the `word' in a literary rather than an oral matrix. In the latter case it can mean something quite different than what we products of a literary culture and training assume. Thus, many textual 'variants' should not be understood as that, but rather as alternative oral expressions of the same referent. The scribe is then akin to an oral performer as he carries out his function. Within the context of an interplay between oral and literary aspects of culture, Person would have us understand the Deuteronomic school as a 'collective unity'.
Having sketched out his theoretical assumptions, Person now turns to seating the Deuteronomic School in a particular social and historical context (Ch. 5, 'Deuteronomic Literature during the Time of Zerubbabel', pp. 103-122). His task in this chapter is to analyze selected passages with a view to how these would have been understood in his conjectured accompaniment of Zerubbabel by the School in the return to Yehud. Person envisages a kind of nomistic conditionality that would have been relevant to the task of reestablishing Jewish life in the land after the disaster-deserved according to Deuteronomistic theology-of exile. His task is carried out in similar fashion with regard to the later post-exilic period (Ch. 6, 'Deuteronomic Literature after the time of Zerubbabel, pp. 123-135). The Deuteronomists initially supported Zerubbabel's mission and lent conditional support to the Davidide leaders and temple complex under Persian sponsorship. However, they became disillusioned-an import and repeated word in Person's argument-and eventually their hopes for redemption migrated to the metahistorical sphere.
Person's final full chapter (Ch. 7, 'The Deuteronomic School and Other Postexilic Literature', pp. 137-145) cites evidence from other scholars of Deuteronom(ist)ic influence upon the redaction of the post-exilic prophets Haggai and Zechariah. Having the extended the active life of the Deuteronomic scribal school into the post-exilic period, it is convenient for Person to explain this influence in terms of full-blown Deuteronomic redaction of these two prophets' material. Indeed, Haggai and Zechariah were probably in league with the Deuteronomic School. Person then explains Ezra-Nehemiah-Chronicles as the work of a second scribal school that returned to Yehud with Ezra and was in some measure discordant with the Deuteronomists. The arrival of this new party, with Persian sponsorship, occasioned the demise of the Deuteronomic school.
Person concludes this important work with a helpful summary of his argument. The author has produced a plausible reconstruction of the social setting of the Deuteronomic School and so potentially illuminated the literature it produced. The book is marred by an unusual number of misspellings, particular in the case of authors' names and publishing houses.
