This book provides a basic introduction to twenty-five commonly occurring families of flowering plants, chosen for their economic, ornamental and ecological importance. It is designed to enable students of botany and related disciplines to gain some knowledge of the general characteristics of each family and also the relationships among them. An introductory section provides basic botanical information essential for a proper consideration of the families themselves. For each family, information on its distribution, classification, general features and economic importance precedes a detailed description of a typical representative species that will be useful to botanists and botany students. Illustrated throughout with clear and accurate line diagrams and accompanied by an extensive glossary.

I was surprised that the book is so tiny. It surely did not have the quantity of pages advertised in the information about the book (about half of what it says). You are probably better off with the old Surf Report series than with this guide. Yet, it is a lot smaller (fits in the palm of your hand) and a lot lighter to carry around. It did get to my

The best book of contemporary design in Britain.......2002-10-18

This is an inspiring collection of great images with engaging tales taken from interviews with some of the world's leading designers, talking about their work.
The interviews get inside the design process and act as an inspirational guide on how leading creative minds answer their briefs and produce great work. The interviews also contain a variety of views of the state of British creativity.
Not all the designers are British. A fair number are from a variety of countries (The USA, China, Poland, for example) but have come to Britain (and London especially) because at the moment it's THE place to be for design creativity.
Products examined vary from the wobbly millennium bridge to cutlery design, from the high engineering of the Rolls Royce trent engine to the more instinctive of glasses, clothes and even pepper pots.
The writing is seductive and the photography wonderful.
A great book for any library, and a fascinating coffee table book. If you have an interest in design and how it works, and how it can be applied to your own life, home, or profession, I couldn't recommend this book more highly.

Pomeranian Genetics.......2000-07-08

The New Pomeranian has an extensive chapter on the genetics of the Pomeranian breed. More importantly, it has examples of color genetics that insure that breeders will be able to "plan" their litters based on the colors they wish to do selective breeding for. I have not found a better book on dog color breeding or Pomeranians in general. The conformation drawings are sure to help novice and experience breeder alike rate their puppies for the show ring.

This well written book has detailed information on breeding and genetics, and wonderful line drawings of conformation and grooming. There are no color photographs, but the quality of the text and line drawings more than makes up for that.

I'm getting a pom soon and this book seems really nice for a new owner. I can't wait until I get my baby pom!
Yesterday at a ballgame me and my cousin got to pet someone's pomeranian. She was so adorable and would let anyone pet or rub her. She would also lick your finger or nose. She was just precious.
I think poms have baby doll faces. They are just soooooooooooooo cute.
When I get my baby this will be a nice book to have. Good source for info on all things pom.

I can tell you from an I-Was-There perspective, that these were the street clothes girls and women were really wearing in those years. Or burned to own. (I only wish I'd had them all myself, with the exception of the paper dress). Sears catalog be damned, this is what the girls really looked like!
I also worked on a glossy influential fashion magazine (MADEMOISELLE)in the 1970s and so can distinguish from the wishful thinking of those magazines (and their advertisers) and the actual look of the time.
The real grrl models, and San Francisco setting complete the time capsule.

dazzling fashions!.......2001-07-24

What an eyeful! This is a great book for enjoying 60's and early 70's fashions and for training the eye to find scores in vintage clothing shops and maybe even thrift stores.

The main problem with this book is that it is incorrectly billed as a collector's book "with values," but the values are only half a page of general ranges for various items. Though that part is misleading, the book overall is flashy and fun and definitely worthwhile.

It is also a good basic introduction to fashion terms and the histories of various styles. The San Francisco photography puts you right in the middle of the 60s, and though some of the styles are ... well ... atrocious, there are many styles that can be modified for today's wearing without having to go for the all-out retro look. Check out this book and prepare to drool.

Boiler-plate collector publishing at its worst.......2000-03-07

A great topic, ruined by horrendous art direction, amateurish writing & editing. Schiffer seems to grind out books in any and all topics as fast as they can, instead of putting out titles that are well-researched and designed. What a shame.

Words cannot express my dissapointment........1998-12-15

BE WARNED: Unlike other books in the Schiffer series (Fashionable Clothing from the Sears Catalog etc.), this one lacks the original ads, layouts and groovy models that made those books so fascinating. This has a few, granted, but unfortunately the majority of the book is filled with what looks like female residents of San Fransisco. And it's painfully obvious they're not models. Most look like rejects from a Gloria Steinhem convention.

I wish I had known before buying it. A sprinkling of original ads make it somewhat interesting, but these women do absoloutely nothing to enhance the clothes. And are in no way a suitable substitute for the real thing.

Buy this for the Photos only.......2000-04-25

While it's hard to knock anyone who clearly has a passion for the Beatles, the fact remains that this book is only worth it (IMHO) as a reference for its photos of Beatles memorabilia. The pricing is wildly off in many instances. And there are many items that you may argue do not deserve any mention due to their lack of collectibility (would you pay ANYTHING for a Mid-West newspaper announcing John's death? - much less hundreds of dollars! ) It feels like one fan's personal photo tribute to their own Beatles collection. A little more research and checking with other collectors could have significantly increased the value of this effort. Having said that, you may find this book still worth it for the photos.

Useful as a picture book,not a price guide.......1998-06-15

This book has some nice photos of newer Beatle items,but is very weak in its coverage of 1960`s memorabilia.Many of the values listed are wildly high,with newspapers relating to John Lennons death priced at over 100 times their actual $5. value.The items depicted in the book seem to be randomly selected,anyone trying to value their collection will be unable to find numerous licensed items produced in the 70`s,80`s and 90`s,the era this book covers.

Lovely reproduction of an older book..........2000-06-15

"Color in my Garden" by Louise Beebe Wilder was first published in 1918. Wilder wrote a number of books that made her America's answer to England's Miss Jekyll. Where Miss Jekyll informed the landed gentry, Mrs. Wilder informed the less landed Yankees.

This book covers a year in the life of her garden Balderbrae--a summer home she and her husband owned and developed in New York state. Although a book written in 1918 might strike one as non-relevant to modern homeowners with smaller grounds, it is not. "Color in My Garden" still resonates with wonderful ideas.

Mrs. Wilder was an artist who created three-dimensional art with live plants of varying colors, textures, heights, and scents. She not only had an esthetic sensibility, she was a horticulturalist who understood the nature of her medium. Her descriptions of plants and her garden designs are still relevant. Many of her ideas have been copied--over and over--but most of the copies are not as striking as the original.

Mrs. Wilder believed lighting was a critical element of garden beauty. She was one of the first persons to develop a white garden and a scented garden for moonlight nights. She also developed gardens that looked best at high noon in summer. She understood that light changes all year as well as all day, and that even moonlight varies with the seasons.

Some of her plant combinations included Lillies and Irises, Hollyhocks and Delphinium, and Red Poppies and White Valarian. Since her grounds consisted of many plots, one could replicate a particular beds in a small yard. I have planted Red Poppies with White Yarrow in a small urban garden.

Lately, I've read many articles and pieces describing garden thugs--a term I first saw in Allen Lacey's "Garden in Autumn." Mrs. Wilder called them outlaws many years ago. I would have given this book 5 stars, but the illustrations are not terrific--they're pretty, but are watercolors that may disappoint the snapshot-camera-loving reader.
