I was privileged to have spent 4 months in Japan, but of all the places I visited, I fell in love with Kyoto. This is a marvelous book for doing all the walking that one needs to do here. Take a city tour first, but then leave several days to revisit all the places that enthralled you, and believe me, there will be many! Get this book and study it well; you won't be disappointed.

It is a short but richly illustrated introduction into the history of Russian architecture. Russian architecture is an expression of dramatic historic struggle of Russian people for the preservation of their national identity and demonstration of the creative development of their Eastern Orthodox culture under the constant pressure of aliened Western culture during periodical waves of Russian modernization. Unfortunately, the dramatism of this struggle and strong capacities of Russian architecture for creative adoptation is not well described in the accompanied text. It is a very good but not exciting book.

Southern Voices does not divulge too many fascinating details about the remarkable people profiled, but it does provide a good place to start when coming up with your own opinion of somebody. It, more than describing individual achievements, attempts to give the reader the feeling of what the described people are all about. Quite nice, and not a hurried read.

a wonderful book.......2002-04-06

I got this book at our local library and loved it so much that I had to buy it. I've loved boxes my entire life and can hardly throw one away. I'm so excited about the prospect of making my own boxes in any size, shape and color that I want. I've looked through a few books on this subject, but this is the book I'll start off with. I appreciate her exacting yet easy techniques and recommendations for the best materials, like Davey board instead of lesser cardboards that will warp. She also gives a technique for making your own bookcloth which excites me as a quilter/sewer.

Wonderful & unique boxes, they make great presents.......2001-06-12

This is a wonderful book filled with beautiful, unique boxes. Though they can be a bit time consuming, none of the projects are difficult and they can easily be made by a beginning crafter with a little patience.

The book starts out with the essentials of tools, materials and adhesives. I found the adhesives chart, which compares 4 different adhesive types, very helpful. There are also recipes for paste and methyl cellulose. Binder's board (Davy board) is the basic structural element for most of the projects. Principles covered include grain direction, parts of the box, measuring, cutting, gluing, covering with paper and fabric and making neat corners.

There are 13 different box projects, including a buttonhole stitched box, jewelry box, postcard box, picture frame box, faux book box, ornament box, artist's portfolio and Victorian scrapbook. The directions are excellent and include a materials list and step-by-step instructions accompanied by clear demonstrating photos. A large picture of the finished projects is also included. Conveniently, there is a list of suppliers in the back.

This book is perfect for bookbinders, rubber stampers and scrapbookers, and makes a great addition to any paper artist's library. The boxes themselves make great gifts for your loved ones and will be treasured for years to come.

This is a must-have book for anyone interested in the art of boxmaking. Barbara's vast teaching experience is reflected in the easy to follow step-by-step instructions which, when followed, will result in beautiful boxes. In the section on adhesives, Barbara takes the mystery out of the properties and usage of various adhesives (this section alone is worth the price of the book). You won't be disappointed in this practical and inspirational book.

By the time I had finished the introduction to this book and flipped through the pages of pictures, I knew that I, a ten thumbed, visually illiterate artist wanna-be, could make a memory box. Mauriello's instructions are so clear ("Whatever you do to one side of a board, do to the other")and the photos so vivid and carefully organized to show all stages of a project that I felt confident that I could buy the correct tools and supplies and construct a box of my own design. And what's more, I think I would enjoy the experience. The book is inspiring as well as beautiful. I have given copies to three friends who make their own holiday gifts, and they too are eager to make boxes.

Of all the arts, music must be the most elusive to capture in words. The writer trying to pin down how a particular work--no matter how familiar--casts its spell over listeners grapples to reach a seemingly quixotic goal. And, particularly when faced with the unique alchemy of personality and technique that goes into performance, too often the result is either distressingly abstract, absurdly reductive, or glib and empty-headed puffery that could easily be interchangeable from one star to the next. What a welcome contrast David Blum's Quintet: Five Journeys Toward Musical Fulfillment offers. Blum, who died in 1998, led a versatile career that bridged his extraordinary talents as conductor and writer. Along with founding the Esterhazy Orchestra in New York, Blum authored Casals and the Art of Interpretation, a classic study of the cellist, and The Art of Quartet Playing, as well as a number of exceptionally in-depth profiles for The New Yorker and The New York Times.

Quintet gathers five of these profiles (from the late '80s and early '90s): Yo-Yo Ma, Jeffrey Tate, Josef Gingold, Richard Goode, and Birgit Nilsson. Utterly lacking in pretension or pedantic analysis, Blum's style goes well beyond truisms and gives us new insights into such works as Bach's Cello Suites, Schubert's last piano sonatas, or Tristan und Isolde. There's plenty of humor here, along with painful acknowledgement from the musicians of the terrors of insecurity.
