In all, the volume assembles 509 species of ferns and fern allies and infraspecific taxa in 70 genera. The editors have revised nearly 80 of these taxa to reflect classification changes since publication of the last standard work on ferns in North America. The gymnosperm treatments encompass 118 species in 22 genera. Identification keys, summaries of habitats and geographic ranges, pertinent synonymies, descriptions, chromosome numbers, and all other significant details are provided. More than 600 distribution maps and 65 illustration plates appear throughout.

A variable book with some very good and other poor parts.......1998-11-20

This review is only about the conifers section of the Flora. Coverage of the conifers is complete for North American species, with a few naturalised exotics as well, but by no means all of these, e.g. Pinus halepensis naturalised in California is not in. The classification follows the most recent evidence, including the submergence of Taxodiaceae in Cupressaceae for which acceptance is becoming wider. Each genus has been authored separately, and inevitably the content varies according to the author. Some are very good, while others, notably Pinus, are much poorer.

Abies, compiled by R S Hunt, a long-time authority on silver firs, is the only genus in which readers might find any unfamiliar names. Hunt has found distinct differences between coastal and inland populations of Abies lasiocarpa, and separates the inland ones as a distinct species Abies bifolia. Also split off is the Sierra Nevada White Fir, usually treated as a variety of the Colorado White Fir but here a species Abies lowiana. He demonstrates good grounds for treating them as more than varieties; in other parts of the world they might have been treated as subspecies, but this rank appears to have been actively discouraged by the editors of the Flora.

Tsuga and Picea are both by R J Taylor, who like Hunt is an acknowledged authority on his genera, and both are covered well. Inevitably, there are a few small errors in some of the measurements: Picea sitchensis is given a maximum height of 80m, though it is known to grow to 96m, while Picea engelmannii is given 60m, though the tallest I can find published data for is 55m.

Pinus receives the poorest treatment of any of the genera. It is by R Kral, an unfamiliar name in conifer taxonomic circles who has no work cited in Farjon's 1990 Bibliography of Conifers. Kral corsorily dismisses or does not even mention several well-founded taxa, notably among the pinyons. He also does not appear to understand the tenet in the International Code for Botanical Nomenclature that subspecies is a higher rank than variety, as he gives the large differences in Pinus contorta recognition only at varietal rank, while giving the very small differences between the two populations of Pinus torreyana subspecies rank. Had this genus been covered by almost any other American pine specialist - e.g. Lanner, Malusa or Haller - a much better account would have resulted

Distribution maps are given for all species, but are very small and not too clear for species with small ranges like Cupressus macrocarpa; for these, just the state or province where it occurs should have been shown, not the whole continent.

Keys are given for all genera with more than two taxa. Like the texts they vary, some are easy to use with that for Picea the best among the larger genera. The key for Pinus includes (lead 28) the inexcusable cop-out "pines of eastern North America / pines of Western North America". This makes it unusable not only for anyone dealing with cultivated or naturalised plants, but also anywhere where trees might possibly be planted or naturalised - thus including all managed forests, in effect all trees outside of National Parks and nature reserves and perhaps even some in these. Some of the keys also seem to assume that you carry a powerful microscope and portable laboratory wherever you go, citing differences in resin canal position or pollen size, though these are usually only as supplementary features.

The book is really well done, excellent illustrations, but, unfortunately, it wasn't what I was looking for. It really is a superb coffee table book or an adjunct to get design ideas. I happened to be looking for a book with the code behind the graphics. I am only giving it 3 stars because I don't think it covered what was advertised.

The previous reviewer obviously hasn't read the book properly - there is a whole chapter devoted to working Jack Russells - contributed by working terrier men!

A very detailed book and a good read ..........1998-05-12

Ms. Atter has compiled a lot of breed information and I found the book entertaining and informative. I have bred, shown and handled many breeds and decided several years ago that I wanted good, smart small working dogs with attitude. JRT's were my pick, but it was only a couple of years ago I started with them. I has compiled quite a lot of books by then. Most general care,beginner and "pet" books. This was my first I classified as a "reference" and while it lacks in a few areas, it shows a great insight into a wonderful breed. Well worth the time, read and money!

Good history of the breed--lots of nice photos.......1997-11-24

The first part of the book gives a very detailed and entertaining history of the Jack Russell Terrier. The development of the breed around the world is then covered and gives the reader an appreciation of how the breed got to its current state. The last part of the book gets into some rather technical aspects of breeding.

The book doesn't cover working the dog. It is very confomation and kennel club oriented.

One of The Best Books About Jazz.......2000-11-05

The history of jazz and its sociocultural battles within U.S. culture are portrayed in this spectacular collection of documents, photos, newspaper clippings, concert announcements, album covers, advertisements, jazz magazines, and other "ephemera" of the last 100 years or so. The book's extraordinary photos and well-researched narrative give a fond but unsentimental portrait of jazz history; of brilliant music played against a backdrop of hardship and white expropriation.

The book is a delight: A museum of rare and evocative materials from turn of the century Storyville, New Orleans (the oldest picture is of jazz legend Buddy Bolden's Band circa 1894) up to around 1990 (with posters of recent movies like "Bird" and "Round Midnight"); however, the bulk of the collection is from the early New Orleans days through bebop. We see the very young Louis Armstrong in the "Colored Waif's Home" brass band, and later with his "Hot Five" group in 1925, and then a racist ad for Armstrong's OKEH recording of "St. James Infirmary." Numerous pictures of jazz in Europe, featuring two Django Reinhardt album covers, a "Jazz Illustrated" article about a 1949 Paris concert with Sidney Bechet, Charlie Parker, Tad Dameron, and "Hot Lips" page (all of whom were subject at the time to a British protectionist ban on foreign musicians), and numerous memorabilia of British jazz bands. (There's a disproportionate amount of material on English jazz; the book was originally published in London).

Bunk Johnson is featured on the cover of "The Jazz Record," hailed as a "the last important link between the present [the 1940's] and the fabulous Buddy Bolden . . ." Superb pictures (but too few) from the bebop and post-bebop periods, including the young Dizzy Gillespie, a close-up of Monk, and album covers for Bird. There's also a ticket from the "Jazz at the Philharmonic" series and an English "programme" for an Ellington concert, but only a two page section on "Women in Jazz," featuring photos and albums of vocalists Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Bessie Smith and Ella Fitzgerald.

The book has its problems. As mentioned previously, there is far too much emphasis on British jazz, the books devotes almost an equal number of pages to "Jazz Consolidates in Britain" as it does to the Swing Era. The boppers, the Cotton Club, Miles, etc. are also not well-represented; this is not a history of jazz. But, overall, this is an eye-catching assortment of "printed ephemera and collectibles." With a special section on "jazz in print" (a guide to jazz magazines), jazz-related literature, ephemera collections (e.g., the Louisiana State Museum), a bibliography, and index. Though neither thorough nor balanced, this is an exciting book, and is a valuable resource for students of jazz and culture. Highly recommended, and definitely worth looking for!!

Good care manual.......2005-03-20

This book is divided into two sections:

(1) An informative and detailed section on care, propagation, and pests. There is also information on "myths and urban legends". The section on "pests" includes the types of pest and how to control/prevent them.

(2) The second section is a plant directory of all the types of cactus and succulent plants. There are beautiful photos and descriptions of each type.

The information in this book is fairly detailed and covers most of the things you need to know about selecting, growing and caring for these plants. The authors of this book specialize in cactus and succulents, so they have a passion for the subject. (and aren't just writing a run-of-the-mill book). After reading their credentials, I would really trust any info in this book.

Not only is this book informative, but the photographs are spectacular. Lots of beautiful pictures of cactus in natural settings.

I definitely recommend this book as a detailed reference book for anyone interested in collecting and growing cactus and succulents.

Good Beginners Guide.......2004-10-29

I feel that this book is geared more towards the beginner and in that respect it does a very good job. Everything a newcomer to the hobby is likely to need to know is there, well written and photographed. Even in a book geared towards helping the less experienced grower, new things can be learned by the "so called experts." There is a good though limited selection of plants and all the necessary information regarding their care and propagation. One minor irritation to me and not just aimed at this particular book, is why authors assume that their readership will automatically be interested in both true cacti and the other succulents and vice versa. They are I suppose trying to get two books into one and sometimes they fail on both counts.

Not for those in Southwest US.......2004-06-21

I was disappointed in this book. I was hoping to find information about growing succulents outside in Arizona. This plant is geared toward those in colder climates who want to grow plants in pots that can be moved in or out depending on the weather.

Also, the information provided is very generalized toward succulents as a whole. If you are looking for specific information about a particular species, you won't find it here. Probably a good book for beginners who are looking for general information.

Russia's foreign policy experience during the first post-Soviet decade was marked by disappointments as well as surprising turns. Expectations that Russia would join the Western powers as an equal partner were frustrated, while relations with the people's Republic of China warmed considerably. Today, Russia's relationship with China is an important component of its overall foreign policy orientation, as the two states -- one greatly diminished, the other clearly on the rise -- have found themselves sharing an interest in curbing the power of the United States.

In analyzing Russia's foreign policy vis-a-vis China, the author takes into account the legacy of Soviet-era precedents; the simultaneous processes of economic policy change and integration into global economic structures; and military relations.
