An excellent guide to providing food & cover for wildlife.......2002-02-20
The book "Florida Plants for Wildlife" by Craig Huegel is exacly what the title says. It is an excellent guide to native Florida plants and trees. The plant descriptions are succint and easy to understand. The illustrations are helpful, however, it would have been more helpful to have color photographs insted of illustration drawings of the plants. The illustrations are fine, it is just my opinion that color photos would have been more helpful.

Book Description
Using London as their home base (since they love dinner and the theater too), the jolly Amateur Historians take you on merry romp that travels back in time to the sites and history of some of the most fascinating areas of the English Midlands. Magnificent Windsor Castle and neighboring Eton College, the ancient educational institutions of Oxford and Shakespeareâs hometown of Stratford are the anchor sites. In addition, the book explores the history of the great medieval castles of Kenilworth and Warwick, tours the glorious cathedrals and abbeys of St. Albanâs, Dorchester and Reading and drops in for a look at the many medieval and Tudor manor homes, churches, almshouses, barns and other buildings in the region. Centuries will drop away as readers:
* Walk with Edward III in the first ceremonial procession of the Order of the Garter, held in 1348 at Windsor Castle;
* Slide down a rope of sheets with the Empress Matilda in her dramatic 12th-century escape from a siege of Oxford Castle;
* Fight--and die--with Richard III as he struggles to keep Englandâs throne at the Battle of Bosworth;
* Dine with Elizabeth I on one of her numerous visits to Kenilworth Castle, one of the many properties that she gave to her favorite courtier Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester;
* Pray with Mary Queen of Scots as she waits at Fotheringhay Castle for her cousin Elizabeth to decide her fate.
These and many other exciting adventures await readers in the pages of "The Amateur Historianâs Guide to the Heart of England."

mapping the way.......2005-01-19
Travellers on the trail of history in London know how frustrating it can be to locate Tudor and medieval places still in existence in that busy, crowded, vibrant, thoroughly modern city. Last year we spent a week with this guide in hand, feeling a bit Sherlockian in our quest. Even with the detailed directions provided by the authors, finding most of these hidden, nearly forgotten sites was a challenge. But with persistence and patience, our efforts were rewarded. What fun! Couldn't have done it without this guide. But if you aren't particularly interested in the places, the era, and the difficult pursuit, better not bother.
The Amateur Historian's Guide to Medieval &Tudor London.......2002-05-16
For anybody who wants to know more about the history of places they want to see in England, this is the guide book for them. I learned alot of interesting things and had alot of fun reading this book. I like the authors' style very much. They make the history easy to read and understand.
Tudor History.......2002-04-23
I've never known a lot about medieval and Tudor history, but a friend gave this book to me to help me plan a trip to England. Now I can't wait to see the places described in the book. These authors have a fan in me.

A different look at London.......2001-04-10
Anyone who has ever been to London knows all the basics--The Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace--but this book takes you off the beaten path to some of the lesser known but still exciting places to vivist in London. The quirky stories behind the places are great, and I really appreciated all of the useful information, like hours of operation and admission costs. I can't wait for my next trip to London so I can use this fantastic guide some more!

Love London:Love This Book.......2006-08-19
This book is not only exremely well written but, it is also more than helpful when it comes to traveling around England.
A Day Trip Believer.......2002-07-16
What I want in a travel guide is what I want in a good traveling companion: one that is passionate and persuasive about the journey, but not pedantic. I want one that is mindful of the economies of time (history) and distances (geography) and what can be comfortably accomplished in traversing both. Moreover, I want a guide with good cheer and that knows just the right way to pick up the pace and energy at any given moment with a touch of wit and memorable wisdom. Kettler & Trimble deliver all this...again. Their first volume of Medieval & Tudor London firmly established their credentials and "Days Trips South of London" proves they are no one-hit wonders. Even if you prefer solitary travel, I cannot imagine a more fitting duo to accompany you. Their real charm lies in that rare balance of being highly organized and efficient, yet deceptively spontaneous in spirit. What a way to go...and come back.
Excellent book!.......2002-07-16
I love the style of this book, as well as the first--the anecdotes and wit keep even a non-history-buff like me interested! We're planning a family trip to London later this year, and we're having great fun picking the sites to see and learning all the fun and interesting facts we didn't cover in history class, as well as brushing up on those we did.
Nothing But the Highest Praise.......2002-07-16
With all due respect to "pink-slipped-arizonian," as far as I'm concerned this guidebook (and the one that preceeded it by the same authors) is a marvelous work -- witty, yes, but I hardly see that as a drawback! I spent quite a bit of time teaching high school history, and believe me, if you can find a high school student who knows 1/3 of what this book imparts, then it is one who has a real fascination with history and has made it a deliberate area of study. This guidebook is intelligent, full of useful practical information, replete with accurate basic knowledge of British history and stuffed with intriguing details and fascinating trivia. I have been studying Tudor history for over 20 years, and this book delves into some of the more obscure bits from that and many other eras. I reviewed this book and its predecessor for Renaissance Magazine (see the upcoming August issue) and stand behind every word I wrote in those reviews. These two books are excellent, and I give them an unalloyed five stars, the highest possible recommendation.
great as a travel guide.......2002-07-16
If you are interested in travel sites in England, than this is the book for you. Not meant as a serious treatise on English history, it is a look at sites south of London and what is worth seeing and what you should skip. These two ladies obviously are having a great deal of fun with their writing, and when you pair this with their earlier book on Medieval and Tudor London, you have a fun, light-hearted look at one of the best places to tour on vacation - merry ol' England!

Book Description
A richly illustrated and fascinating portrait from two aficionados of Canadian design, and the first major book to identify and document more than fifty years of contemporary product design in Canada.
From the radical Project G stereo that every well-appointed, Pop-inspired “bachelor pad” had to have, to the wedge-shaped Contempra phone that quickly convinced homeowners to replace their boring black telephones, Canadian design has entered our homes and shaped our lives. Most of us have sat on one of the ubiquitous moulded plywood chairs that furnish every church basement and Legion, or bought a chromed dome kettle, or marvelled at how a garbage can was elevated to the status of a champagne bucket. For the first time, we can look at these products through the eyes of the designers who created them, and celebrate their achievements.
Design in Canada showcases designs that were destined for mass production, and covers everything from popular plastic dishes to refined high-style furniture. The book also features textiles, small appliances and lighting fixtures that have rarely been seen, or, in areas like consumer electronics and ceramics, that have not been as thoroughly documented.
The book also explores the movements and influences that have shaped design in Canada through time: from personal artistic challenges to the global juggernaut of modernism and beyond. Whether exploring post-war materials like plastic or aluminum, or finding ways to capture and tame new technology, Canadian designers have worked with imagination, style and an eye to the global market.
Magnificently illustrated, with extensive appendices providing a “who’s who” in the world of Canadian design, Design in Canada will be welcomed by everyone who shares an interest in design. Whether you are decorating your home, or are a professional or student involved in industrial, interior or architectural design, you will appreciate this comprehensive reference to more than a half-century of Canada’s rich design heritage.

Customer Reviews:
A little book with a lot of information.......2007-02-04
This is an excellent book, full of information and inspiring photographs. No wasted words here, but facts and directions for planning and implementing a small space garden. The author has a brisk, and often humorous style that is easy to read.
Morris talks about city front yards, side yards, courtyards, and small sections of larger gardens. He describes the garden process from planning to planting to enjoying. Pruning, problem plants, and watering: all here.
This book is not overly technical but enough detail is here to get your garden growing.
A visually breathtaking and highly informative tour.......2004-01-14
Filled cover to cover with gorgeous color photography, Small Gardens Of Savannah And Thereabouts by gardening enthusiast and expert Elvin McDonald offers a visually breathtaking and highly informative tour of more than thirty gardens created and maintained by the residents of Savannah. Useful secrets for garden upkeep pepper the text commentary in this horticulturally impressive and "reader friendly" exploration recommended especially to all dedicated gardeners and landscaping professionals.
The Small Enchanted Oasis.......2003-11-25
I visited Savannah many years ago and it was so hot and humid that I vowed I wouldn't go back. This book might make me change my mind though. Savannah is indeed a beautiful historical city, filled with charming little gardens and Georgian Colonial and Greek Revival architecture. Behind some of the walls and iron gates are these tiny paradises filled with semi-tropical foliage and old fashioned southern flowers. This tour showcases these gardens, both public and private ones. Chapters are arranged by garden type - walled gardens, side gardens, historical gardens, pocket gardens, rooftop gardens, container gardens, treelawns, work spaces, etc. Descriptions are included but the highlight of the book is easily the outstanding photographs. The author also includes a "must-have" plant list for the southern gardener and a month-by-month planting guide. This is a beautiful book sure to inspire the gardener even if we can't grow some of the tender varities featured here.

Book Description
Cinema buffs will treasure this one-of-a-kind facsimile edition of the first published history of film, reproduced from W.K.L. Dickson's own annotated copy of his groundbreaking 1895 volume. Dickson, co-author with his sister Antonia of this book and of The Life and Inventions of Thomas Alva Edison (1894), headed the team at Edison's New Jersey laboratory that was attempting to build "an instrument which does for the Eye what the phonograph does for the Ear." The results of their efforts were the kinetograph (the camera used for photographing motion pictures) and the kinetoscope (the means for viewing them). Acquired by The Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1940, Dickson's book is a unique document that allows the reader to experience the wonder and promise of the cinema in its infancy.
Customer Reviews:
A Worthwhile Piece of Cinematic History.......2003-11-04
This little volume of unwieldy title is a faithful replica of a book first published in 1895. At the time, the technology of moving pictures was in its infancy and the author, W.K.L. Dickson, was working with Thomas Edison to create and perfect what would later come to be known as cinematography. Inspired by the Zoetrope in 1887, Thomas Edison set out to create a means of recording images that would allow continuous playback, as the phonograph had done for sound. The first part of this book recounts the trials, successes, and failures that the inventors faced in their attempts to create such a machine. The fruits of their efforts were the kinetograph, which photographed moving pictures, the kinetoscope, which provided a method of viewing them, and the kineto-phonograph, which is analogous to our modern movie projectors. Once these devices have been invented, the book goes on to explain the particulars of filming a motion picture and impresses upon the reader the endless scientific, journalistic, and recreational uses that this new technology promises. The authors give detailed descriptions of many early films, which ranged from animal studies to capturing a sneeze to humorous skits. It's fun to read about the dreams these early cineastes had for their new invention and how they envisioned it would improve our understanding of the world and preserve virtually everything for posterity. Cinema might not have shaped the world exactly the way these visionaries predicted, but shape it it did. The book includes a selection of images from those very early films. Recommended to anyone interested in the history of cinema or in Thomas Edison's many inventions.
