Half a book, but a good half?.......2001-05-26
There would seem to be some justice to the earlier review. This book obviously is handicapped by the absence of illustrations: some line drawings accompanying each species would greatly enhance the usefulness of this book. The color photographs are few (at most one per species), fairly small and many suffer from a dark background: also they are in a separate part and not near the descriptions. This book is not in the same league as John Laird Farrar's work for northern North America.
Still the pictures are of a pretty good quality. For most species a distribution map is provided. The volume is well-printed. In many respects it complements Harrar&Harrar's "Guide_to_Southern_Trees". Maybe these two together make up a complete book?
PS I don't dare judge the quality of the descriptions, although I do note that the authors refer to "Betula alba" as if it is an extant name, which is a pretty backward thing to do.
This book is difficult to use for anyone but a botanist........1999-06-09
I found the book's keys difficult to use for identification of trees because the terminology was totally scientific. There were no drawings for clarity, and the photos were not adequate for identification. The book was a disappointment.

Superb book on several fronts..........2007-10-16
Earley was trying to write a history of turpentining. What he ended up with was a spectacular essay on the natural history of longleaf pine forests, the human history of the forested south, an essay on conflicting views in forestry, and....oh yes...turpentine!
Reading this as an ecologist, I found everything I wanted with just enough of the human element to flesh it out without boring me. Oddly enough, I suspect those reading this from an anthropological view have the same opinion about the natural history aspect of the book. Earley is that good in weaving his tale.
It flows well, is well organized, and the research and references are stunning. Twenty-three pages of references make me wonder how he ever finished the book. (In his acknowledgements he seems to wonder the same thing himself!)
This book belongs on the shelf of every forester, ecologist, and southern historian. I'm just thankful I stumbled across it on a rainy day in Congaree National Park.
complete book about longleaf pines.......2006-11-19
mr. earley goes deep into everything you could want to know about this native tree species,a cornerstone to both the natural world of the southeastern united states and the economic growth and development of the country as a whole.......he tells all about the past history,present day status,and projected outlook of the longleaf pine tree:it's one-time dominance of the coastal plain landscape,compared to it's present day status;all about the naval stores and timber industries,and their heavy dependence upon it that led to it's near demise and current numbers;and the changes in land management of the longleaf forest and it's various ecosystems,with much insight to the controlled burning philosophy that has gained in popularity during the last 50 years or so.....with photos, including some impressive shots of long-gone virgin growth trees dwarfing the grown men standing among them.

This book is as accurate and detailed as any scholarly paper but is written so well that it is certain to be a classic of literature like Archie Carr's "The Windward Road."
America's Rain Forest.......2004-11-23
For years I have been concerned about the disappearance of the South American Rain Forest. What was shocking from Earley's book is how we had our own expansive Forest with it's own ecosystem and let it disappear before our very eyes without anyone noticing.
It is not only a wonderfully told story of the Longleaf pine but it is a genuine history of how the South's economic development between the time of the settlers and up until today nearly destroyed it's most valuable resource and the ecology that was a part of it.
The only problem with this book was not being able to put it down after I started reading it.

As Beautiful As the Orchids.......2002-05-13
This turns out to be an outstanding book and I'm very happy to have it. The text is pleasant to read, written in a friendly and personal way. The pictures are crisp and beautiful, and laid out nicely alongside the text for easy access while reading the description. One outstanding feature is the detailed habitat information based on the author's years of field experience in observing the habitats of each of these orchids. Another stand-out is that the author has done the photography himself, resulting in pictures that support and complement the text very well. I checked several books on orchids and wildflowers while trying to identify an orchid in my forest (which turns out to be a lily-leaved twayblade), and I found this book to be the best. In summary, I'm impressed with this book. I hope it will set a new standard for other books on regional wildflowers.

I just love cats. If it weren't for this book I wouldn't of found any of our kittens' breeds. This lists down probably every breed of cat there is, except wild and extinct cats that is. I would say this is the best cat encyclopedia I've read. I would recomend this book to any cat breeder out there.

We have several little cat friends around the home and this is a great "general reference" on cat care. It is easy to read and well indexed with loads of information on what to do to keep your cat happy and healthy. For "cat first aid and emergency care", however, I would recommend an additional book sold on Amazon, "Help! The Quick Guide to First Aid for Your Cat." By Michelle Bamberger (DVM). She really outlines, with excellent drawings, what to do in a life or death emergency situation with your cat. With both of these books, from Amazon, you'll have an excellent library on cat health and emergency care.

Best cat book I own! And I own a lot of 'em!.......1999-01-15
I want to go to University and become a vet, but until then I am using this excellent book as a guide! So far it's helped me to save my kitten from LUTD (Lower Urinary Tract Disease) which can be fatal if not caught. The pictures and sympton charts are absolutely phenominal, I don't know what I would do without this book. I've learned so much, I consider this book my cat Bible! If you have a cat or are interested in animal care, you must have this book.

This book is very well organised into logical sections and is very easy to find the information you need. I have many Feline health books at home and this one covers most of the areas in more detail and gives references for further reading in these areas. It has many colour pictures of illnesses & diseases which are great for identifying symptoms, but you will need a strong stomach with several of the pictures.

Great general book for the cat owner.......2002-04-30
I checked this out from the library and it's too bad it's not still in print. This book starts from the basics and covers everything. My cat is expecting kittens and I'm very nervous about this whole thing. The book told me just what I needed to know about how to care for her and the kittens. It has cat first aid, a symptom chart for when your cat is sick, and tips on choosing a cat. It has it all. A great book for the cat owner, and a great gift for a friend.

I have owned many cats, and I reccommend this book. The book is easy to read and has a at-a-glance guide to signs and symptoms. It also gives you information about what to do in an emergancy, tips on posion control, first aid, and it also explains cat behaviors. This is definitely the best book for cat owners.

Book Description
Increasing accessibility of Tibet has provided important new insights on the history and context of Tibetan art. This book discusses the impact of Tibetan patronage on Buddhist artistic monuments from both the heartland of Tibet as well as its far (cultural) borders.
A score of experts here explore the dialectic between local and "foreign" traditions. Thus the role of Indian artistic traditions, the merging with Chinese, Kidan and Turkic artistic features come to the fore, while at the same time Central Tibet gets ample attention.
Recent field research and the study of previously neglected primary literary (inscriptional) evidence make clear that the study of Tibetan art is still in its infancy. This edited volume is the first comprehensive guide to emerging new insights on the intricate context in which Tibetan art emerged and flourished.
