    Book Description

A Hedonist's guide to Beirut tackles one of the Middle East's most vibrant and exciting cities. The continued reconstruction of the city after one of the most publicicsed and bloody conflicts of the 1980s has seen a surge in designer restaurants, clubs and bars with an appetite for nightlife unparralled elsewhere in the region. Ski in the morning, dive in the afternoon in the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean before a little evening shopping in one of the many world class shops in the newly constructed downtown.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Best there is.......2006-06-30

This is a useful accompaniment to any trip to Beirut, and at the moment is about the only guidebook available. American embassy staff commend it. Be forewarned, however, that my one attempt to use the maps led to a memorable adventure with a series of Beirut cab drivers, one of whom did eventually find Centrale, the restaurant I sought, but no thanks to the book.

5 out of 5 stars At last some good news.......2006-04-14

As a person who has lived in Beirut for most of my life, I found this book very accurate, straight to the point and reflective of the city's style and character.
The book is perhaps one of a few books that looks at this battered nation from a leisure perspective and offers some good news at the time most other books available on the subject limit their literature to political news and regional conflicts.
Not only Short takes in his book Beirut to a new perspective, his elegant style further enriches the Hedonistic dimension of the city as it presents an already entertaining city in a decorative, yet simple, language.
The book is worth the money. Buy it and you'll find yourself boarding the first flight to Beirut.

I absolutely LOVE this book. It has fantastic suggestions on how to train a wonderful family dog by using POSITIVE reinforcement! If you are looking to intimidate your dog into following your every command out of fear, then this book is NOT for you. If, on the other hand, you are looking to understand your dog and teach him how to please you, then this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book on positive training methods for family pet.......1998-12-01

Well written book on training good manners to the family dog using positive, motivational methods. I recommend to my students to supplement my basic obedience class.

                              Product Description

The Gardeners Guide to Growing Hardy Perennial Orchids exposes the best kept secret in the gardening world by introducing the reader to many hardy perennial orchids that can be grown almost anywhere in the US including Alaska with a little care and preparation. Many beautiful color photographs are included to tantalize the reader and peak their interest in these beautiful plants. Also, many color illustrations are used to demonstrate bed preparation, planting and other cultural practices. The author divides the discussion into three groups of species Upland, Transition, and Wetland. Within each group, selected species are discussed in detail with a strong focus on a non-technical presentation of the necessary cultural requirements for these species to survive and thrive in most any garden setting. Some of the principles that are emphasized include: Hardy orchids survive and thrive in temperate and more frigid climates. In fact, some actually require temperatures at or well below freezing for several months each year to maintain proper growth, much like tulips or daffodils. The most important requirement for growing this kind of orchid is good soil drainage, which in most cases requires excavation and the addition of premixed soil in a raised bed. Sand or Perlite are key ingredients to achieving good drainage. Orchids in general have low nutrient requirements, and do not tolerate lots of fertilizer. In fact, the addition of a good leaf or bark compost to the soil mix usually supplies all the nutrients an orchid needs. The author stresses that while these requirements are relatively easy for most gardeners, terrestrial orchids can not be planted just anywhere and expected to grow. To be successful, its absolutely necessary to plan ahead and prepare a site to meet the specific requirements of a species. This process is covered in depth in The Gardeners Guide to Growing Hardy Perennial Orchids.

5 out of 5 stars Growing Hardy Perennial Orchids by William Mathis.......2007-05-31

An excellent guide for the beginner or experienced gardener interested in growing these relatively unknown orchid species. As for growing orchids in the back yard, I don't think there could be a better book. The real "KICK" that I got from it was that it taught me some very important principles. These concepts can be use in preparations and installations of other plants , like hostas, Japanese maples, hydrangeas and many other plants, I believe I can say that his teachings will take you well beyond that of growing hardy orchids.

The book is a very well written book, in form and composition. Being unlike many other books that are simply writing for profit and lacking in expertise, Dr. Mathis is serious about his work, his explanations, and ideas are complete. He is like the veritable chef that whispers in your ear, that he did indeed use Grand Marnier in the Madeira sauce.

I have read a few books on organic gardening, gardening in general yada yada yada, but I must say this is by far the best book on gardening I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars Orchids in your garden -- not just for Floridians.......2005-12-17

I live in the Pacific Northwest though I grew up in Montana. My gardening interests started with bonsai, but I quickly also got lured into a fascination with the wildflowers that grow under the forest canopy.

Much to my surprise, there are 200 or more species of orchids that live in the US and Canada, many of them in snowy and colder areas -- like Glacier National Park and Mt. Rainier. More and more material has started to become availalbe through specialty nurseries. So a few years ago, I set out to learn how to grow some of the species in my garden and in pots outdoors. I was hooked.

The unfortunate problem was that, while there are a ton (literally) of books on tropical orchids, there was hardly any information anywhere about how to grow the various species of hardy orchids.

I do not review books. This is my first. William Mathis, an MS in botany and PhD in agronomy, who spent a career as a research scientist for an agricultural company, and then retired to start his own hardy orchid nursery, wrote this book. It is beautiful. Though it's self-published, it's as nicely organized, written, edited, illustrated, and detailed as any gardening book I've ever seen. The color photos, of which there are lots, are stunning. What's more, the book is designed to be practical -- truly a "Gardener's Guide."

This book came out in February 2005 and, sort of ironically, in September, a major gardening book publisher came out with a book on the same topic. I have both and I like them both for different reasons. But for plain usefulness and clearly written text, if I had to pick one, it's this one. When I talked with Mathis about his book he told me that if he'd known that other publisher's book was coming out he wouldn't have done his. I disagree. I find the other book useful. I find this one invaluable.

“A brilliant collection of gardening books.”—The New York Times Book Review

From the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, a series The New York Times calls a "brilliant collection of gardening books."

The world-famous Brooklyn Botanic Garden, a renowned collection of international experts, and celebrated orchid photographer Charles Marsden Fitch, combine their talents to give gardeners all the information they need to cultivate the exotic orchid. This unmatched and beautiful handbook covers all the basics in painstaking detail, from propagation and potting to watering and fertilizing to setting temperatures and light. There’s advice on overcoming common beginner’s pitfalls, creating an orchid collection, growing under lights, and control of common pests.

4 out of 5 stars Good handbook for beginners.......2004-09-21

This concise little handbook (120 pages) has chapters on buying orchids, growing requirements, potting, growing under lights, diseases and pests, propagation, hybridizing, collecting and showing orchids. The info is good and easy to understand for beginning enthusiasts. The book does not spent much time on the different types of orchids and their specific requirements so this should by no means be considered a comprehensive guide.

Written by Geoff Stebbings (the establisher of the National Collection of Award-winning Irises), The Gardener's Guide To Growing Irises is a professional-quality botanical guide profusely illustrated with full-color photographs, and suitable for flower gardens of all caliber and experience levels. Extensively detailed information concerning a wide variety of irises makes The Gardener's Guide To Growing Irises an eminently suitable and "user friendly" reference, from choosing the right strain of iris, to properly caring for and presenting it. The Gardener's Guide To Growing Irises is an essential and strongly commended addition to any dedicated personal or professional gardening collection, as well as an academic Horticultural Studies reference library.

For a person who needed information on growing Irises outside England and the Pacific Northwest, this would be not be the best first purchase. I can't judge how well it would describe cultural best practice in England but with Irises climate is extremly important. What works in one climate will not work in another, Iris Borer, for example, only lives in North America but it is a terrible pest there. It would make lovely winter reading for most of us because of the artistic photographs and excellent botany of the various Iris species. However don't expect to be able to buy many of the varities shown, the English have their own set of Iris varities and only rarely import the American ones.

3 out of 5 stars Good reading for Iris lovers.......2001-03-23

"The Gardener's Guide to Growing Irises" by Geoff Stebbings is more readable and less usable than many of the gardening books I own. It is a wonderful book to curl up with in the winter when your garden is covered with snow. The pictures are beautiful and in color, although I wish there were more of them (I think I've been spoiled by the photos in the Iris catalogues that show up in my mailbox every Spring). The author has definite opinions as to which varieties work best in the garden. In his chapter on "The Value of Iris in the Garden" he states the following:

"Perhaps it is because the bearded iris show such variety that many gardeners do not look elsewhere in the genus for garden plants. This is a mistake, however, because although the deep, blackcurrent purple of 'Superstition' may have a velvety sheen, a ruffling and size that are hard to match, the deep purple of forms of 'I. Chrysographes' are augmented by bright golden markings on a flower of refinement and poise that makes the other look clumsy and almost grotesque."

The tall, bearded Iris also gets short shrift in the popular "The Well-Tended Perennial Garden" by Tracy DiSabato-Aust, but I would venture to say that theirs is the minority opinion among gardeners. Most of us love the bearded irises for their gorgeous colors and perfumes, and in spite of their short season of bloom. This book's longest chapter is on the Tall Bearded Iris, so it can't be said that the author neglects them. There are also chapters on the Siberian Iris, the Pacific Coast Iris, the Water Iris, the Spuria Iris, the Stinking Iris, the Dwarf Bulbous Iris, and "Iris for the Specialist".

As interesting as this book is to read, it is not really organized to help you locate a quick paragraph on what to do about the Iris borer grub that you just discovered in your 'Beverly Sills' rhizome. In fact 'iris borer' isn't even listed in the index. If you flip to the lone page on 'pests', you won't find them there, either-just a few miscellaneous paragraphs on aphids and wet rot.

Buy "The Gardener's Guide to Growing Irises" if you love irises and would like to learn more about them. However, you might want to look elsewhere for a straightforward guide to growing and caring for these lovely flowers.

                                Book Description

Orchids have always had a massive specialist following among collectors, but with the new "easy-care" hybrids, even beginner gardeners are becoming seduced by the exotic splendors of orchids. This latest addition to our popular Gardener's Guide series dispels the mystery surrounding the cultivation of orchids while bringing the descriptions of plants right up to date for specialists. The orchid group includes around 750 genera and 17,500 species, with an even larger number of hybrids; this book, therefore, is a guide to the best varieties. Authors Wilma and Brian Rittershausen clearly describe modern methods of cultivation to reveal that new hybrids can be grown in much the same way as other houseplants, without the need for a greenhouse or any other special equipment. Readers will enjoy a splendid combination of expert cultivation advice, up-to-date lists of cultivars, and beautiful photos.

The volumes present a rather rare glimpse at a long period in the history of Judaism in Mesopotamia (ca. 227 BCE- 700 CE), which was, almost entirely, under the control of two successive Iranian dynasties (Arsacid and Sasanid). The area bordered on the western frontier of India and the eastern frontier of Rome, extending from the Tigris-Euphrates to India and into central Asia. The Persian/Iranian influence upon Judaism and its history is believed to have begun from 539 BCE when Palestine was under the rule of the Iranian Achaemenid empire which controlled the region until 332 BCE (the Persian Period), during the Macedonian conquest of the region by Alexander. Extensive studies on Jewish history in Persia/Iran simply do not exist, and the main reason that Persia/Iran has fared so poorly at the hands of posterity is due to the paucity of sources. Our primary sources come mainly from Greek & Latin (classical) sources who were interested in Iran only at the specific points at which Persia interested Greece or Rome. Their comments on Iranian political and cultural affairs were based on second-hand information, embellished with occidental disdain for the alien orient which seems to have held up firmly against Roman political and military propaganda. Since both the Iranian and Jewish sources (apart from Josephus) are neither widely known nor, by those who know them, historically interpreted, the author has not hesitated to extensively cite the relevant Talmudic documents. The author's aim in these volumes is mainly to reconstruct the historical and socio-political aspects of Babylonian Judaism, rather than aspects of Iranian religious and cross-cultural influences, an ambiguous and yet much debated topic in Near Eastern and religious scholarship.

A coast lover's coffee-table book, Big Sur to Big Basin is both stirringly beautiful and exceptionally informative. In a book about Big Sur you'd expect to find sun-splashed sea stacks and astonishing redwoods, but here photographer Larry Ulrich surprises and inspires with mission bells, cherry blossoms, storybook houses, forest streams, bucolic grazers, and prickly fields from the artichoke center of the world (Castroville, that is).

Long-time California resident Pamela Verduin Cain has done a thorough job of finding and recounting stories that give the photos interest beyond the visual. There are Pebble Beach golf legends, secret nature hikes, famous authors' and artists' haunts, and palate-tempting descriptions of choice restaurants along the way.

The book is divided into six sections: Big Sur, Carmel, Pebble Beach, Pacific Grove, Monterey, and Santa Cruz. A hand-illustrated map highlights 25 points of interest (such as the Steinbeck House, Point Lobos State Reserve, and Monterey Bay Aquarium) to help travelers actually find some of the stunning spots captured here. In the meantime, pour yourself a glass of California Chardonnay, relax in your easiest chair, and take a panoramic journey through these dreamy pages. --Kathryn True

I like this book the best of all in my library.
It is outstanding in photographic images.

                                          Highly recommended!

From a photographic standpoint, the book is good, but not great. The pictures are nice, but not high art. It is not on the level with Muench, Wolfe, etc. It is more of a book to remember the area by.

4 out of 5 stars see for yourself..........2002-05-25

Big Sur to Big Basin is the only book I have experienced that fully portrays the feel of the area. Fantastic photography complements the books detailed narrative, and if there ever was a book to remember a visit to a region, then this is it.

The California coast is a wonderful place to explore, and in particular, the Big Sur area is one of my favourites. From the mighty trees, to the wonder of the rugged coastline, there is something for everyone.

Larry's photography leaves you thinking "I have to see this for myself". So we did. Twice now!

Buy this book if you ever want to travel to the area. Buy this book also if you just want to experience the area without leaving your armchair. Most of all, have this book on your coffee table, and you will always have something to remember from a fabulous trip to a unique part of the world.

I had a getaway to Big Sur last summer and was stunned by the breathtaking view of where the ocean meets the sky. About a few months later I picked up a copy of Big Sur to Big Basin at a local bookstore and began a virtual re-visit of Big Sur. Like many pictorials with pages of astonishing sunsets, Pamela Cain, a former Carmel resident, recounted anecdotes and memories of hers that make the photos alive. The redwoods, the beaches, cheery blossoms, the meandering streams, Pebble Beach golf courses, Monterey bay...Big Sur to Big Basin is your window to panoramic view in central Californian coast.
