Book Description
North Carolina is home to 66 genera and 195 species of liverworts--small, mosslike plants occupying moist microhabitats that form an inconspicuous part of the vegetation. Marie L. Hicks’ Guide to the Liverworts of North Carolina provides the first complete field guide to the hepatic flora in North Carolina. The volume offers a key to genera, species descriptions, distribution maps, a glossary, and 120 original drawings of liverworts as they appear in North Carolina.
North Carolina’s varied physiography creates a diversity of flora, ranging from boreal plants in the mountains to subtropical plants in the coastal plain. Collections of hepatics in North Carolina have been sporadic over the years, and knowledge of their distribution within the state has accumulated gradually. Guide to the Liverworts of North Carolina builds on earlier field studies, including those of Hugo L. Blomquist and R. M. Schuster, to provide keys and illustrations to aid identification. This important, comprehensive field guide will also be useful in states adjoining North Carolina and is designed for students, botanists, and all those interested in identifying local liverworts.

Fascinating World of Liverworts!.......2005-01-16
This book enabled me to identify liverworts and hornworts in an area of North Carolina where few (if any?) had ever researched them before. Now I realize that Megaceros aenigmaticus also grows about a hundred miles farther east from any population known heretofore. Pantropical Dumortiera hirsuta occurs nearby and might represent diploid ssp. nepalensis, an extreme rarity in North America. Although drawings represent outlines of these organisms accurately enough to assist in identification, they might help more if stippled more extensively to reveal more details. I heartily recommend this book to any and all who may wish to learn more about liverworts and hornworts.

Useful Guide To A Beautiful Place.......2006-10-29
The Lonely Planet city guide to "Tasmania" is a very useful travel guide authored by Carolyn Bain, Gina Tsarouhas, and Paul Smitz. With 19 national parks which cover over a third of the territory, it will come as no surprise that a good portion of this guide is focused on outdoor activities. However, if you are headed to Tasmania for other reasons, as I am, there is still plenty of good information about sites to see, places to go, things to do, and places to eat. This review is based on the 4th edition of this particular travel guide, which was published in October of 2005.
The book opens with several sections about the state as a whole. There are sections on the history, culture, environment, the outdoors, national parks, and food & drink. It then follows with 12 more specific sections covering the major cities and different regional areas of the island, including a small section covering the Bass Strait Islands. The book then has a very useful section titled "Directory", which covers a large assortment of odds and ends which are useful for a traveler, such as business hours, climate, customs, embassies, festivals and events, holidays, insurance, money, and so on. There are then two more sections which cover transportation and health. The book then closes with a glossary, some information about the Lonely Planet books, a section for some notes, and an index.
I am fortunate enough to have friends there, so the main thing I used the guide for was to look at the descriptions of things to do, and to see what looks interesting. That blended well with my friends' suggestions, and I think it will prove to be useful to me in my trip. In particular, the "Directory" section is good to go through, as it can often serve as a checklist for things to think about and to take care of while you are planning your trip.

The Ultimate Guide to Tasmania.......2000-04-30
Having just got back from Tasmania with this book in tow I can highly recommend it to everyone, from locals, all Australians and the overseas visitor. This book has not only the history of this State but everything thant you could want to know about the flora and fauna, where to stay including the very basic accomodation through to the most luxurious, there are in depth maps, where to do the best shopping for your souveniers, where to eat whether it be fish and chips, vegetarian or a steak. This book was my bible and did not let me down once. We even found some short cuts with some lovely hidden treasures of nature displayed for us just by following the maps. The good thing was that the book does not only give information for the big towns but also many of the smaller ones hidden away,by visiting some of the smaller places It made my holiday that bit more personal and memorable. Read the book and you'll want to come and visit this wonderful isle.

It's better than nothing.......2005-04-08
I just got back on a trip from Tasmania where I used this book. Given that there aren't many tour books just on Tasmania, and the only other option would have been to carry around a huge Australia book with a little section on Tasmania, this was the best option. This not too shabby book proves there is enough to talk about in Tasmania, and so I think more tour book companies should publish single editions.
When I look at a tour book, especially Lonely Planet, I feel overwhelmed at all the information. And I think that's what LP does best - get the facts across. It's always good to have a second book about the same place for a second opinion. So as this book did fine at informing me, I also like to have a book that is more of an editorial, I don't think it's bad if in a tour book the author will give his/her personal opinion of something. This is what makes Rick Steve's so popular. Unfortunately he seems to only do Europe.
Rough Guides are good at giving opinions, and I think they are laid out in a much more accessible way. Also Fodor's just has one page where they list the big important "to do's" in one area; and I don't think that's a crime.
As a traveler I wasn't very selective because I went all over the island and saw just about everything.
So here's my little editorial:
Launceston: A nice town, smaller than Hobart. I think it's best to know someone here; otherwise I wouldn't spend much time.
Hobart: A great town, rich in history and activities. Try to be near the Salamanca boardwalk. The fantastic flee market happens there on Saturday mornings and it's also the general center of commotion. If you happen to be around during the "10 Days on the Island" festival, (early April) there will also be a lot happening there too.
Bruny Island: Skip it.
Tasman Peninsula: This large promontory sticks out of the south western part of the island, and along with great (bush) walking, also contains the islands premier tourist attraction, Port Arthur. This is a famous jail where the worst British convicts were sent. It has impressive buildings and a church, but probably wouldn't rank up with what you've seen if you have been to Europe. For history however, it is a great stop. I just went on the ghost tour, which was a waste of time. Go during the day.
Also in the Tasman Peninsula was the best hike I took on my stay. It was to Cape Raoul, just south of Port Arthur. Really impressive sea cliffs and you're looking straight at Antarctica from the view. You may want to spend one night on the peninsula, but keep in mind it's the countryside, so not the center of it all. The Comfort Inn is surprisingly nice, and has a good restaurant.
And of course, go to the devils park, seeing them fed is priceless.
West Coast: Strahan is a tourist rigged port, but still a trip up the Gordon River is worth it. Stay at the Gordon Gateway, eat at Risby Cove.
Cradle Mountain: A necessity, this is the big nature attraction in Tasmania. The walk around Dove Lake (which sits below the mountain) is unforgettable.
Mt. Field Park: Here I did the most strenuous hike, straight up to an alpine plateau. Great scenery but I wouldn't do it unless you really want your ass beaten.
Freycinet: Interesting mountains, and seeing Wineglass Beach makes you think you're in the tropics, wish it was warmer.
Recommended.......2004-04-04
On a recent trip to Tasmania I refered often to this book and found it a useful companion. Like all Lonely Planet books it has good coverage of contexts such as political, historical, natural. There aren't too many guidebooks specifically devoted to Tasmania, and this one does the job admirably.
Customer Reviews:
History comes to life.......2007-02-11
This is an excellent reader for an upper level 2nd grader up to a mid level middle schooler. It makes the world of knights and castles come to life from the viewpoint of a young boy studying to be a squire in his uncle's castle. My son loved it and I found that he related well to the history text that described medieval life because of it. It is written at a read alone level and includes illustrations here and there to emphasize the story.
Amazing and pathetic all at once.......2005-03-14
Why do I say "amazing"?
Author Richard Platt writes a fictional diary for young readers based on ACADEMIC RESEARCH. The diary is a brilliant vehicle to make the facts fun, digestable, and memorable. Platt makes the history of a medieval castle come to life with vivid characters, action, and suspense.
Why do I say "pathetic"?
I'm a language arts teacher and therefore have some insight on the following scenario: If you ask a young reader to pick out a book, he'll inexorably choose junk like Animorphs or something by R.L. Stine, and adults are inclined to think, "Well, at least he's reading." Yeah, he's reading junk, and as he grows older he'll continue to read junk. I spent a weekend hunting down this incredible book, Castle Diary. Barnes & Noble didn't carry it, and only one of three Borders bookstores in town had it---and only one copy, at that. And yet they carry enough R.L. Stine, Animorphs, and other trash to sink a battleship. Pathetic.
Parents, expect a little more from your child's reading habits. Buy this book for starters.
Great for Classical Education.......2003-08-21
It's always a challenge to find elementary-level quality literature for earlier time periods, but this was perfect. The illustrations in this hardback edition are wonderful. My kids couldn't wait to read it each day. I recommend it highly to homeschoolers.
A GREAT READ.......2002-06-28
Castle Diary is a wonderful book about the Middle Ages. It is the diary of a young boy, Tobias Burgess, who spends a year as a page in a castle. He hopes to later become a knight. Tobias has many fun adventures and enjoys the castle life. He gets to ride in a hunt and discovers a poacher near the castle. He is always getting into trouble, as he is not used to the castle rules. His punishments are very harsh. Tobias always keeps up with his journal, because he always wants to remember his experience. I loved this book because I learned so much about the Middle Ages, and the illustrations were absolutely wonderful!
I really enjoyed this book.......2001-02-08
An extremely descriptive book, both in text and illustrations. Each page is riddled with short passages (by day) and small illustrations to follow most passages. The text is exploding with vocabulary used by the people of the year 1285 (The Dark Ages). The illustrations are very detailed and descriptive. There are many double page illustrations that add a lot to the book. The detail, color, and facial expressions used in the illustrations catch an observer's eye and force their eyes to wander throughout the illustration to acquire all the information it has to give. Illustrations include the layout of the castle, as well as the inside of many rooms. The text is broken up into easy to read and find sections and a glossary and index is included to aid the reader. At the end is a great section titled "Toby's World". This is a small section that goes into good detail about weapons, armor, houses, castles, and titles of the day. An informative short novel that could be enjoyed by children age 9 to 99. It can be used as a reference, an enjoyable reader, or as an addition to a Dark Ages discussion or curriculum.

Excellent.......2007-07-13
I hope to start a rescue of my own one day and this book has it all. Fun to read, easy to follow, its a must for anyone thinking about starting a rescue!
This Book Will Save the Lives of Many Dogs.......2002-11-02
A sincere desire to do the right thing, combined with knowledge and skill in dog care, are not enough to enable people to successfully run the nonprofit business of a dog rescue organization. In this book, Boneham leads people through the necessary decisions and policies. Her advice will help rescuers avoid myriad pitfalls that stop so many from continuing in rescue.
Boneham sets high standards for rescue, and explains the reasons for each criteria. Volunteers working within these rules will have a greatly increased chance of remaining in the work long-term, and people adopting dogs from rescues run by these principles will have good experiences. Most of all, the lives of dogs will be saved, and that's what makes it all worthwhile.
Covers every aspect including getting organized.......2001-07-06
Sheila Boneham's Breed Rescue: How To Start And Run A Successful Program is a complete and thoroughly "user friendly" guide to launching and operating a dog breed rescue. Boneham covers every aspect including getting organized; finding, training and managing volunteers; acquiring financial and community support; networking with other animal shelters and rescue groups; finding the dogs; screening dogs for medical problems; determining a dog's temperament and behavior; placing rescued dogs; and promoting/publicizing the dog rescue program. Breed Rescue also provides lists of contact names and addresses, as well as extensive collection of pertinent sample documents. If you see a need for rescuing dogs in your community but no current resources for addressing the problem, then begin with a careful reading of Sheila Boneham's Breed Rescue!
Breed Rescue.......2000-05-27
After being involved with Breed Rescue for close to a year, I then found this book on breed rescue. It is well organized, succinct and, in my opinion, complete. There is so much to consider with rescue that it is easy to get lost in the activities. I am now recommending the book to others who want to become involved. To be well informed and have each person in rescue with a sense of the same goal and way of doing things helps enormously. Many thanks to the author who took the time to put together such a wonderful reference. I still refer to it from time to time.
A great resource.......2000-01-02
Sheila has covered everything about rescue from the ground up in clearly written, easy to understand language. Even after having been involved in rescue for almost 6 years, there were new ideas in it for me.
This book is a "must read" for anyone who is thinking about starting a purebred rescue program. I believe that it would also benefit any rescue volunteer who reads it, from seasoned veteran to brand new recruit.

Book Description
This is an interesting, readable introductory survey of Kansas geology. Illustrated with both full-color and black-and-white photographs, line drawings, maps, and figures, it is designed specifically to provide non-technical information for the general reader.
The introduction sketches Kansas geologic history; discusses how Kansas fits into the geology of the North American continent; explores the concepts of geologic time, labeling, and periods; and describes the natural forces of deposition and erosion. The section on landscapes introduces the geological and natural features of Kansas--those features that can be seen on the surface--by describing the characteristics of its eleven physiographic regions. The chapters on rocks and minerals describe what they are composed of, how they were formed, and where they are found. This section includes discussions of sedimentary rocks--limestones, sandstones, shales, chalk--as well as mineral fuels, minerals, and sedimentary structures. Another chapter reviews Kansas fossil history, describes common fossils and their locations, and explains why Kansas is world-famous among fossil collectors.
A special feature of this book is a guide to noteworthy geologic formations along I-70, which describes and explains selected landform features, outcrops, and historic areas. This section pinpoints exact spots along the Interstate, identified by mileposts, where the features described in the previous chapters can be observed. The book also includes a list of useful references and a glossary.
Customer Reviews:
The Varied Landscape of Kansas.......2007-02-20
Buchanan and other writers he draws upon in this book provide readers with an appreciation for the geologic history of what is often regarded as a flat and featureless place. In addition his skillful interweaving of the current Kansas landscape with how it came to be, gives a context for not only understanding this plains state but an increased appreciation for its many interesting details. These range from the great salt and gypsum deposits to the gravel beds of the Ogallah aquifer, and the the incredible fossil finds in the Kansas chalk beds. He deals with the Gyp Hills, The Smoky Hills,The Flint Hills, The Ozark Plateau and the once glaciated area in such a way that a trip through these regions and indeed the entire state becomes a natural history lesson. This book should please Kansas "explorers" whether they be day travelers, fossil and mineral collectors, rock hounds or naturalists.
Kansas Geology -- A useful travel companion.......2000-06-24
A cursory reading of this book should lay to rest any lingering prejudice that Kansas is a flat, boring state.
The book is well organized, and and easy to read, with a minimum of scientific jargon, and where such jargon is needed, it is defined clearly.
The photographs are clear, and color is employed where appropriate.
Several authors contributed to this book, and it starts off with a general introduction to the geology and various land features of Kansas.
The next three chapters cover rocks, minerals, and fossils, respectively. Throughout these three chapters, history, natural history, and geology are interwoven in a particularly interesting narrative that left me with a greater understanding of why Kansas is the way it is, and how the geological history and modern times are related.
The final chapter consists of a mile by mile description of the geology of Interstate 70 as it passes through the state. The descriptions of the various sedimentary beds one sees in the road cuts were clear enough that we could see the formations as we cruised by at highway speeds. Driving back to Missouri from Colorado was an interesting trip back in time from the Quaternary through the Pennsylvanian periods.
My only criticism of this book is that there are other major routes through the state, and it would be nice to see a more southern route as well as north-south route descibed. But then, that would be more in the area of the "Roadside Geology of ______" series. This book is not really in the same category as the Roadside Geology series, but it is useful, nonetheless, and gives a far more complete view of the overall geology of the state.
