        Book Description

Outer Mongolia is one of the few places on earth where travelers can still explore with a true sense of adventure. Vast tracts of this "land of blue sky"can be discovered on the back of horse or camel for an authentic cultural experience in the style of Genghis Khan's mounted army, or in the comfort of four-wheel drive. Comprehensive coverage of the opportunities for riding, climbing, fishing, biking, and rafting are provided for this top global destination for adventure tourism. Details of the best ways to enjoy Mongolia's festivals are also brought to the fore, especially the famed Naadam--the colorful annual celebration of wrestling, archery, and horse riding, and Tsaagan Sar--the Mongolian New Year. Mongolian hospitality is legendary, making responsible travel and Bradt's customary "giving something back" advice especially relevant for travelers.

2 out of 5 stars Not meant for backpackers.......2005-08-30

When I decided on buying this book over the standard travel books, like the Lonely Planet series, I was looking for something different and perhaps more personal it its descriptions. This book is certainly informative and includes personal descriptions (often at the sacrifice of more usable information), but it really didn't do a good job of representing what I saw in Mongolia. The price estimates were extremely over-inflated (a welcome surprise), and the maps didn't help at all. I suspect this book is meant for a different type of traveler, and not the young backpacker set which I was among in Mongolia. Its still a good read, but should not be the lone source of travel info. about this magnificent country.

3 out of 5 stars A good starter, but check before you hit the road.......2007-10-03

A good place to start, but when I checked the web sites for the first two hotels I wanted on my trip they were no longer pet friendly. I realize it can't be updated every few months so my advice is use the book a starting point but do your investigation to follow up on-line.

            5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-05-13

I had an earlier edition of this book, which I used a lot, but it got outdated. It is invaluable in searching out places that take pets. Gives you somewhere to start. I used internet sites too, but they are outdated, so I ordered this new edition.

5 out of 5 stars Never travel without it!.......2007-04-12

My husband and I always travel with our dog, and that can make it difficult to find lodging. This book never lets us down. Aside from all the lodging listings there is a lot of general information about traveling with your pet. We bought a previous version and just about wore it out.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful for pet owners.......2007-01-17

The most valuable asset of this listing is that it not only gives you the upper crust but even the more affordable motels and hotels sometimes even off the beaten path that will allow pets. This is good for those of us who don't only want the "inns" and hotels but just a nice stay in a clean place.

            5 out of 5 stars Great up-to-date information.......2005-08-02

Great for people planning both a long and short trip. I used the book for a cross country trip that went into Canada and found all the information up to date. The general travel tips and what to pack is also a big help.

                      Book Description

This book examines how the economic performance of immigrants is shaped by national and urban social institutions. In the United States, particularly in the high-immigration cities, most immigrant-origin groups have significantly lower earnings than do their counterparts in Canadian or Australian cities. Immigration policy is not a factor, however; in fact U.S. immigrants-in particular origin groups-are not less skilled. American institutions, including education, labor market structures, and social welfare, all reflect greater individualism and all contribute to the potential for inequality. Resulting higher poverty rates for America's immigrants explains their more extensive use of its weaker welfare system. Jeffrey Reitz's social institutional approach projects the impact of institutional restructuring-past and future-on the economic performance of immigrants in these countries.

                      Customer Reviews:

                      2 out of 5 stars A significant disappointment.......2001-07-18

Reitz misses a great deal concerning what is important for the incorporation of immigrants. The book has a relatively narrow empirical focus and thus deprives itself of the sort of comparative basis that would allow for a more insightful treatment. Immigration studies will require a more broad-minded approach to move beyond some of the half-truths that continue to characterize popular and sometimes even scholarly thinking.

                        Book Description

The year is 1828. Niall, the narrator of the chronicle, is a fictitious character who, with his pregnant sister Jennie leaves Ireland and sails for New York. While on board ship, they are befriended by John Neilson, co-owner and former editor of the Quebec Gazette. Jennie dies in childbirth and Mr. Neilson offers Niall an apprenticeship. Niall lives with the Paradis family in order to learn French. He eventually becomes a reporter in the Legislative Assembly and observes the Parliamentary sessions, most notably of 1831, the Fabriques Dispute, the Tracy-Duvernay affair, and the riotous Montreal election of 1832, closely followed by the disastrous cholera epidemic of that summer.

                        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A fine history of early Québec.......2000-04-24

In the late 1980s, Jan Henry Morgan embarked on a series of novels relating the story of an Irish immigrant's journey to Québec in what was then Lower Canada. She has completed three volumes of a projected 4-book series, taking her hero Niall O'Donell from his arrival in the 1820s, through the years leading up to and immediately following the Quebec patriots' rebellion to the British crown.

This is a very well written history of early Québec, and one which serves to remind us, in many ways, of how little things have changed in 200 years. Morgan draws on a multitude of archival material, some of which she reprints directly in the book, and weaves this original matter in with a finely wrought narrative. Fortunately she points out to us which of the very large cast of characters is real and which invented, otherwise we would have little chance of detecting the inventions. I marvelled at the continuity of the text, which at times sticks so closely to history (especially in reference to the political goings on), and then branches off into a fictional reconstruction of the period which is just as compelling. The line between the two is indiscernible.

This is a book which will appeal to a wide audience; it has the researcher's love of detail and the historian's interest in people, places and dates, both combined with the storyteller's gift of narration. All those interested in nineteenth century history, whether English, American or Canadian, should read it. Those interested particularly in the history of the Patriots should definitely not miss it. Whilst it doesn't have the panorama of a book like Keneally's "The Great Shame," it nevertheless has similar depth and interest. It is excellent writing, prepared with flair and originality. Those who find and enjoy the first book will be glad that more volumes follow.

1 out of 5 stars Understanding Prehistoric Iconography in 174 Pages or less.......2001-04-11

Talking Pots is a book with an aggressive scope, suggesting that the deciphering of the meanings of prehistoric pottery can be made clear in 174 pages. Of course the stated purpose is to alert ceramicists to the potentials of symbols and symbol combinations (page 18), but ceramicists already know this. The book then proceeds to provide interpretations for many bowls and provide definitions of symbols so that apparently any layman picking up the book may use it to gain an understanding of the intended messaging within the bowl. No doubt prehistoric Puebloan bowls contained symbols and complex messaging, but there is no way that outsiders to those cultures are going to be able to actually determine the intended meanings and know the interpretations are even remotely correct from this book, but the fact that no one is around to debate you makes it seem easy. This assumes, of course, that Cunckle's identification of the symbols is correct in the first place. Identifying iconography is one thing and often dubious with prehistoric icons, but understanding the iconology, the beliefs associated with the images, is a whole other matter. It is interesting to note how easily we can apparently decipher prehistoric images, the images of a culture totally unlike our own, of a culture whose language we don't know and most assuredly do not speak. And then of course Cunckle shows how easily the same rules and symbols to interpret White Mountain wares can be carried other to interpret other types of pottery from other groups such as the Mimbres - as if all Puebloan peoples conveyed information in the same manner and used the same symbols. A brief look at Hopi, Zuni, and Eastern Pueblos' works clearly shows this is not the case, that Hopi symbolism does not translate directly into Zuni such that a Zuni could look at a Hopi bowl and ever actually understand it without first knowing Hopi culture inherently. Buy the book and enjoy it for what it is, a fun read. Do not take the interpretations too seriously. Many of the whimsical and crudely drawn cartoons should alert readers to the lack of seriousness of the addressed issues.

AN ELEMENT CAN BE FOUND THROUGHOUT SW ART. ONCE I WAS ABLE TO SEE THEM I BEGAN TO GET A FEEL FOR THE ARTISTS INTENTIONS. I USE THIS INFO EACH TIME I SEE A SW DESIGN.

This is an absolutely extraordinary book. Never have I read a book in which the spiritual beauty of the author so resonated throughout the story. The purity of heart that manifests itself in this inspiring saga of a heroic, Dutch family in Nazi occupied Holland during World War II is stunningly beautiful.

This is the true story of the Ten Boom family who, during the Nazi occupation of The Netherlands, upon seeing what was happening to their Jewish neighbors and friends, asked themselves this age old question "If not us,...who; if not now,...when?" They answered it, ultimately, at great cost.

The Ten Booms were devoutly Christian and lived a simple life. The patriarch of the family ran a watch shop that had been in his family for a century. Some of the family members, the author among them, worked there; selling and repairing clocks and watches. They also lived in the house in which the shop was located.

When the Nazis occupied their country, the reality of what it meant slowly dawned upon them, as they saw the treatment given to their fellow Dutch citizens of the Jewish faith. Moved by their plight, the author at the age of fifty, together with other members of her family, including their father who was nearly eighty, became active in the Dutch underground.

When it became clear to the Ten Booms that Jews were being targeted for deportation and death, they had a false wall constructed in the author's bedroom, thereby creating a secret room. There, they would hide the terrified Jews who were staying with them, in the event of a Nazi raid upon their home.

Eventually denounced by someone to the Nazis, the Ten Booms were arrested and their home raided and torn apart by the Gestapo, in their search for the Jews they believed to be hiding there. At the time of the raid, the Ten Boom home was filled to capacity with Jews in hiding. So well concealed was the hidden room that had been created by the erection of the false wall, that these poor, terrified Jews managed to escape detection.

The Ten Boom family did not fare so well. It was upon their arrest that they learned first hand of man's inhumanity to man, and their faith was put to a test that they had never dreamt possible. It was faith, however, that sustained the author in what was to be her hour of darkest despair. To find out what happened to the Ten Booms, read this book. It is the story of an incredible family, who had the courage to put their convictions to the test.

This book is a masterpiece. The reader is sure to be captivated by the goodness and spiritual beauty contained within its pages.
