Customer Reviews:
Great descriptions and photos, crude maps.......2006-07-29
Laurence Parent is a well-known photographer - his photos illustrating this book are superb (wish there were more) and his descriptions of these drives in New Mexico are great...the maps are crude but serviceable. They are better than the very rough ones in his Hiking New Mexico, though...I've driven almost all the routes described and got my money's worth many times over - the book is well-used and always with me on my New Mexico trips.

Book Description
As our everyday social and cultural experiences are increasingly mediated by electronic products--from "intelligent" toasters to iPods--it is the design of these products that shapes our experience of the "electrosphere" in which we live. Designers of electronic products, writes Anthony Dunne in Hertzian Tales, must begin to think more broadly about the aesthetic role of electronic products in everyday life. Industrial design has the potential to enrich our daily lives--to improve the quality of our relationship to the artificial environment of technology, and even, argues Dunne, to be subverted for socially beneficial ends.
The cultural speculations and conceptual design proposals in Hertzian Tales are not utopian visions or blueprints; instead, they embody a critique of present-day practices, "mixing criticism with optimism." Six essays explore design approaches for developing the aesthetic potential of electronic products outside a commercial context--considering such topics as the post-optimal object and the aesthetics of user-unfriendliness--and five proposals offer commentary in the form of objects, videos, and images. These include "Electroclimates," animations on an LCD screen that register changes in radio frequency; "When Objects Dream...," consumer products that "dream" in electromagnetic waves; "Thief of Affection," which steals radio signals from cardiac pacemakers; "Tuneable Cities," which uses the car as it drives through overlapping radio environments as an interface of hertzian and physical space; and the "Faraday Chair: Negative Radio," enclosed in a transparent but radio-opaque shield.
Very little has changed in the world of design since Hertzian Tales was first published by the Royal College of Art in 1999, writes Dunne in his preface to this MIT Press edition: "Design is not engaging with the social, cultural, and ethical implications of the technologies it makes so sexy and consumable." His project and proposals challenge it to do so.

the Four Treasures of Alan Shawn Feinstein.......2003-05-23
[...] Some of his advise in his financial advise columns include "If you need money, have a garage sale" He is a self proclaimed humantarian. For those thousands upon thousands of people he has [...],used or taken advantage of, humanitarian is not the word that should be used. His self published advise articles include...Send me [$$$] and I will send you a secret" The secret being that at a certain time and date everyone who sent him the money was supposed to go outside and send "good thoughts" into the atmosphere to encourage anything or anyone out there in the universe to make contact with us lowly human beings. This book is a[...]just like his other publications.
FEINSTEIN.......2002-04-23
Alan Shawn Feinstein, founder of the Feinstein Foundation , is a nationally known philanthropist and humanitarian. He has made an indelible impact on American education and public service that is quickly spreading throughout the country.
With a college background in both journalism and education, Mr. Feinstein taught public schools in Massachusetts and Rhode Island and established an English school in Thailand. He later entered the business world, starting a financial advisory newsletter in 1974 with $500 in savings. His newsletters went on to become among the most widely circulated in the world, reaching a readership of over 500,000. He has also authored several best-selling financial guides, a novel and several books for children. A book was written about him and the value of his advice: The Four Treasures of Alan Shawn Feinstein, published by Prentice-Hall in 1984.
He now dedicates his full time to philanthropic endeavors, focusing on the advancement of public service and the alleviation of hunger. He founded the World Hunger Program at Brown University, the first university center to study and try to end the causes of hunger, launched the World Hunger Brigade, a program which encourages middle school students to study hunger and design programs to fight it, and the Feinstein International Famine Center at Tufts University which carries out projects designed to help reduce hunger in countries around the world.
His commitment to the schools in the State of Rhode Island is legendary. He has dedicated millions of dollars to its elementary and secondary schools, and to its colleges and universities, to advance the importance of community service in education and the values of caring, compassion and brotherhood. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the first public high school ever to have community service as its central theme and the first college program to offer a degree in this field.
Among the many honors he has received are the American Historical Societyýs Distinguished Services Award, the American Red Cross Longfellow Humanitarian Award and the first Rhode Island Citizen of the Year Award by the March of Dimes Foundation. He has been named to the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame, has received the prestigious Presidentýs Medal from Brown University and Rhode Island College, and honorary doctorate degrees from Providence College, Salve Regina University, Johnson and Wales University, Roger Williams University, Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island. He recently founded the Citizenship Center at the International Institute of Rhode Island, and is honorary chairman of the International Scholar/Athlete Games, where his "Enriching the World" Program is a requisite for all participants from all countries. He also has given start-up funds to over 200 houses of worship throughout the country to start food pantries available to everyone in need in their communities regardless of their religious affiliation.
As well as the Feinstein School of Public Service, several other schools have been named for him including the Graduate School of Johnson & Wales University , the College of Arts and Science at Roger Williams University, the College of Education at Rhode Island College, the College of Continuing Education at the University of Rhode Island as well as elementary schools in both Providence and Central Falls.

Book Description
Other than a few Asiatic and one European species, North America is home to all the deciduous azaleas, members of the genus Rhododendron. There are native American azaleas suitable for a wide variety of garden environments. Gardeners interested in knowing more about these attractive, usually fragrant shrubs will discover here the diversity to be found in the species and will learn about recent trends in cultivation, selection, and hybridization. American azaleas are not used as much as they should be in gardens and in landscaping, even in areas where the plants are native and are common along roadsides. The author offers expert recommendations on all the horticultural aspects important for growing these colorful shrubs, including siting, soil preparation, and companion plantings. His coverage of the native species and the cultivars is comprehensive and up to date. The book provides all that the reader needs to enjoy the year-round pleasures offered by American azaleas.
Customer Reviews:
Good introduction to native azaleas.......2006-02-14
This book is a good introduction to native azaleas and is particularly helpful on distinguishing between the fifteen azalea species that grow in the U.S. Each species is described with a map indicating areas of the country where the plant originates. A 40-page section of beautiful color photos show each variety growing in the wild and in gardens. Other chapters include information on growing, collecting, landscaping and propagating azaleas. Appendices include sources for purchasing azaleas, organizations, registration forms for registering a new azalea and rhodendron name, illustrations of leave and flower types and a bibliography.
Wonderful World of Native American Azalea Species.......2005-05-20
What a wonderful book. The author has created a book that is easy to read, practical and informative. For those who are thinking about incorporating some native flowering shrubs into their garden or for those that are interested in Azaleas in general, this book is a must have. From a technical point of view, the author gives detailed information on propagation, planting and overall care of these plants. The photography gave a wonderful view of these native azaleas in their natural habitat as well as their tasteful placement in a naturalized garden. My favorite part of the book however was the in-depth discussion on hybridization of the native azaleas. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in native azaleas.

Book Description
In verses that fuse highly original imagery with exuberant rhythms, Efrain Huerta probes the cultures of both Mexico and "el Norte," from the impact of racism in Mississippi to political corruption in Mexico. Since he demanded for life and art the same freedom he demanded for politics, his poetry is often erotic. His poems are passionate outcries to love and justice, characterized by original metaphors and an acerbic wit that earned him the nickname "Crocodile."
"Walter Lowenfels was the first to call my attention to Huerta. Said he and Neruda were giants. Writers of colossal importance. Neruda I had read, but Huerta was to elude me all my life-that is, until now. Lowenfels was right; they're giants, both with a vision of humanity that should rightly serve as understructure for our world community. It has been worth the wait!"-Douglas Blazek
Poet and translator Jim Normington was a founding member of the American Literary Translators Association. Born in 1952, he has published widely for the past 20 years and currently teaches English at Freemont Adult School in Sacramento, California.
Efrain Huerta was born was born in Silao, Guanajuato, Mexico in 1914 and died in Mexico City in 1982. He was a professional journalist specializing in film criticism as well as a poet. During his lifetime he received many honors and awards, including the Palmas Academicas in France in 1945, the Villaurrutia Poetry prize in 1975, and the National Journalism Prize in 1978. 500,000 Azaleas, published with the support of the U.S.-Mexico Fund, is the first collection of his poetry in English.
Jack Hirschman was born in New York City in 1933 and has lived since 1973 in San Francisco. He has published more than 25 translations of poetry from eight languages. His most recent book from Curbstone Press is Endless Threshold.
Customer Reviews:
A compendium of verses by a highly talented Mexican poet.......2001-09-07
Ably translated from the original Spanish by Jim Normington, and deftly edited by Jack Hirschman into a bilingual format, 500,000 Azaleas: The Selected Poems Of Efrain Huerta brings to the attention of the American reading public a compendium of verses by a highly talented Mexican poet. With an original imagery replete with exuberant rhythms, Efrain Huerta probes the cultures of both Mexico and the United States as he ranges from the impact of racism in Mississippi to the political corruption in Mexico City. Phantoms: Trees, houses, bridges: phantoms./There's a heavy weeping mist,/stuck to the ground, thick, sterile,/monstrous and exhausting, a filthy mold.//Faces, legs, and hands: phantoms./And a frigid animal under the skin of the soul.//It's a world of lead, this Ohio world./Original dawn of lead and dirty petting.//Moans, kisses, laughter: Phantoms./Grey and green phantoms of desire and fear./It's like a phantom of my very self,/going off to die in the middle of a dream, right on course.

The Bible for Azalea growers.......2005-06-07
If you are serious about growing azaleas you cannot live without this book. I have virtually slept with it every night and nearly have it memorized - which would help you too.
Not only are the color photos just fabulous, the text is in simple laymans terms and easy to read. Once you learn the basic varieties that everyone grows, then it's easy to pick out new and different ones for your yard.
There is a whole lot more to azaleas than just color: TIMING of the bloom season is everything - and Jim Darden gives you charts to keep your yard blooming for three whole months of the azalea season.
Forget the Plain Janes. Let's have some of the doubles and the bi-colors! Not to mention the yellows and oranges of the deciduous varieties.
Height? You'd better think about that right up front. Jim's charts give you a heads-up in that department too.
Just one other consideration: Cold Hardiness. He also lets you know which varieties are best for your area. No sense planting something that is going to freeze in its first year.
This book has opened a whole new world of gardening to me. The reason that they're only available on the secondary market now is because I bought nearly the whole book supply in the first year of publication and gave them to everyone I know. I just took one to an out-of-state garden club talk last week and told them they all need to have a copy.
If you're going to grow azaleas, then you need it too.

Book Description
In this book the origin and objects of the land description in Joshua 15 and its context are examined. Town lists and border descriptions are literarily, historiographically and theologically classified against the background of their relationships to Tetrateuch/Pentateuch/Hexateuch and the Deuteronomistic History.
The first part deals with the text, context, and literary relationships of Joshua 15. The second part is devoted to the historical-geographical analysis of the area defined by the town list and border description of Joshua 15. In the third part the respective origins and objects of the successive phases in the history of the text are examined.
All those who are dealing with Joshua 13-21 and the historiographical and theological meaning of land descriptions should read this thorough and encompassing study

Have you noticed how many book titles are listed on Amazon for books that do not even exist, that are not onluu not published, but not even written? For example, this is a typical malicious title for a non-existent book. I really wonder about the listing policies of Amazon that let non-authors get away with this nonsense.

Customer Reviews:
Don't believe the hype.......2000-12-28
Don't believe the hype about this book. The cover blurbs would have you believe that Kit Miller, a working-class hero, somehow penetrated the ruthless security of Nevada casinos to tell the stories of those down-trodden by the evil gambling empires. In reality, Kit Miller comes from a wealthy family, and she had little difficulty gaining access to the casinos. To her credit, Miller sets aside her liberal political heritage, and presents her subjects' stories in a highly readable manner, free of ideological slant. Her subjects are no more exploited than any other working persons, and their employers are no more evil than those outside the gaming industry. This is, however, a well-done book, and although Miller's main credit is as the photographer, she is a deft writer. It's just not the book you might expect from reading the ham-handed back-cover blurb.
As a former casino worker.......2000-07-24
As a former casino worker I can attest to the veracity of this wonderful book. I also know what a difficult task it had to have been for the photographer to gain access inside the glitter. Casino workers are an increasing portion of the working class in the United States, but are nearly invisible. This book vividly portrays their work and lives, and makes clear that the job is not the totality of a working person's life and with other opportunities in a more just societies these same people might be scientists and professors, writers and film directors, senators and govenors.

Book Description
This book is a compelling account of a Chinese woman's journey from dysfunction to wholeness in the company of extraordinary dogs. Every chapter contains gripping, often witty, anecdotes about a different dog as she moves from Asia to America via Europe, each dog progressively moving her forward in the evolution of her soul. Her leash transmutes from tether into lifeline when she discovers and then shares with others, the great gift of the healing power of dogs. The book by King, who has been rescuing abused or abandoned dogs since her own pet was killed five years ago in the American South, blends tragedy and joy in her personal life with the theme of mutualism between humans and animals. Receiving help, she gives help. Every dog launches analyses of various cultures making us reflect on a number of human-animal issues such as the linkage of human violence and animal abuse, racist realities in all cultures, culture shocks in a Chinese family twice uprooted, and problems of marginality.
Customer Reviews:
An Incredible Journey.......1999-04-12
An extraordinary story for everyone to read. A wonderful insight into the minds of people and dogs. The true tales of a young woman as she struggles with her heritage, growing up, racial issues and familial acceptance wonderfully combined with touching stories of her true love for dogs. You must read this book!
An eloquent expression of sentiment.......1999-03-20
The author gives a powerful voice to the often stifled voice of Asians living in strange circumstances. A must read for students of race, class, and gender. Very readable.
ANOTHER CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE PET LOVER'S SOUL.......1999-03-03
I am interested in animal welfare and Asian culture, so for me a book combining the two is like finding a gem. The way out of an inner struggle is unique as it is admirable. It's wonderful to know that other cultures different from mine, love animals as I do -- maybe even more.
Sensitive and poignant testament of love for dogs.......1999-02-21
I could not put this book down. The stories about different climes, different dogs, make you want to read on and on at least to finish a chapter, and then to start another after that. They tug at your heartstrings: the little girl whose own grandmother wanted her dumped in a baby "tower" for the vultures, just because she was a girl too many; the other grandmother, the gentle one, the Buddhist who never had a pet in China but finally got one whom she loved too much. Then the remarkable mutt in Paris, who was intensely funny as the French are not. Hey, if one can be reborn again, I'd like to be a dog in Paris. Then, a sad tale of killing a pet by someone who could not accept what is different. This book teaches love for the different and "lowly"..
The book is beyond wonderful and I am in awe!!.......1999-02-18
The book is a fascinating, colorful, unique collage of all the components that make up the writer's life - then and now. Weaving across and throughout her life is the "karmic" presence and significance of her beloved dogs. I never had a pet in my life, although my sister and her daughters have two huggable, affectionate labradors living with us in our New York apartment, the fact that I love dogs vicariously, even more, through the book, demonstrates how effectively Ms. King has written about this often-overlooked subject matter. If that is not powerful writing, I do not know what is....Her voice is authentic, uncommon and incredibly exquisite...Now that I myself am very much immersed in China, I can appreciate more fully the enigma and "stigma" of being Chinese...The book is beyond wonderful and I am in awe."
