    4 out of 5 stars a great guide.......2000-05-09

We bought this book to help us plan our Caribbean vacation. The reviews were very informative and gave enough detail on the different resorts to help us make an informed decision. The only thing I would change about this book is the addition of more photos of resorts. However, the author does provide phone numbers and web addresses to enable you to get more information on a particular place. The end result? We found a terrific resort that lived up to all our expectations. A beachfront cottage on a quiet stretch of Caribbean beach which we plan to visit every year. I would not hesitate to use this book again to find another Caribbean resort, but we've already found our slice of heaven.

    5 out of 5 stars A first-rate general intro to Caribbean resorts.......1999-11-18

I knew nothing about the Caribbean. I bought this book, read it carefully, selected a resort based on Showker's nitpicky and thorough information, and had a great time with NO major surprises. Not only is it a tremendously helpful and trustworthy guide, it's fun to read. I read it whenever I feel the need to escape, if only in fantasy, from cold, grey New England winters.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read for all Kung Fu San Soo practitioners.......2003-11-01

Master Gatewood provides an excellent overview of Kung Fu San Soo. His insights come from decades of study under Jimmy H. Woo (AKA Chin Siu Dek) and as a law enforcement officer. He explains many Kung Fu San Soo principals in plain language. This work is well researched and provides an excellent resource for students and instructors alike.

4 out of 5 stars History of Jimmy Woo's San Soo Kung Fu! (Chai Li Fut).......2002-12-22

This volume is NOT a "how-to" book. It IS a very thorough and detailed explanation of Kung Fu San Soo as originally taught by Jimmy Woo. For the first time, there is a decent explanation of Woo's San Soo Kung Fu history, which should put to rest rumors that he was an American Kenpo breakaway (he wasn't). Jimmy Woo, this volume explains, was originally schooled in Chai Li Fut (aka Choy Lay Fut) kung fu, and a chart on page 37 of this volume illustrates his lineage. Gatewood offers all the specifics of Woo's hostory, including his immigration to the US via forged papers (one of the reasons he changed his name--don't confuse him with James Wing Woo!). There are also some very good pictures of Jimmy Woo and other san soo folks. A lot of sensible theory is included in this book as well. I should add here that I am not a San Soo stylist, and have had no problem relating to or understanding the material presented in this book. Another good source for those wanting to learn more about San Soo KF history is the San Soo Journal, Volume 3 #4, which includes an article by a San Soo practitioner who visited Woo's mother in China, and described his converstaion with her (pictures included) concerning her missing son.

5 out of 5 stars To the point.......2001-09-13

Master Gatewood has done a suberb job in exacting detail. A must read for the San Soo fighter that needs to know, and wants the truth.

5 out of 5 stars A Direct Source of Information.......2001-09-12

Any and all information put out on the art of San Soo is more than valuable, I've read the book and came away with questions to take back to my Master, Master Gatewood shares a variety of information that he's gathered for over 30 years in the art, Considering it takes years to learn the art I'm glad someone published something of this art.

5 out of 5 stars A proud depiction of a proud Grand Master and His Art........2001-09-11

At a time when many speculate about hidden truths of San Soo, applause goes to Master Ronald Gatewood who tells it as it was and is. What can be more noble and respectful than the truth.
The art and Jimmy H. Woo's life do not lend themselves to embellishment and half truths. The Grandmaster's story is simple but powerful, as was his goal in the teaching of his art. Anything more than good reporting would render this neat book, forgettable.

      Book Description

In 1959 Chinese troops occupied Tibet, sending the Dalai Lama and tens of thousands of Tibetans from all walks of life into exile. This is the life story of Tashi Khedrup, a Dob- dob, 'fighting monk', trained to police and keep peace in a huge monastic establishment with several thousand Buddhist monks. He experienced the futility of resisting Chinese domination, and fled to India with the Dalai Lama, where he spent some time before finally settling in England--and permanent exile

With Gustav Stickley and Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles Sumner Greene and brother Henry Mather Greene defined the Arts & Crafts movement in America. From their offices in Pasadena, they created "Ultimate Bungalows," finely crafted homes characterized by the integration of architecture and interior design into a harmonious whole. Though both brothers had long and distinguished careers, the highpoint of their work came between 1903 and 1909, when they created such lasting masterpieces as The Gamble House in Pasadena, the Pratt House in Ojai, and the Thorsen House in Berkeley. Greene & Greene: Masterworks presents their work in this era in loving detail. Bruce Smith, who wrote the text for the book, is an authority on the Arts & Crafts movement, and is currently working on a biography of Charles Greene. Alexander Vertikoff's lush photography is the perfect accompaniment to the text, beautifully capturing the sweeping grandeur of each house as well as capturing the subtle details that make each Greene & Greene home a treasure. After an overview of the Arts & Crafts movement and a brief biography of the of the brothers, the book turns its attention to various details that characterized the brothers' style. In the section on entryways, for instance, they point out that
Rarely in a Greene and Greene house is there an abrupt division between inside and out. One enters by transitions, in stages. Brick steps my lead up from the garden to a porch. Shelter comes from a gabled overhang or sleeping porch that extends from above--one is covered but still able to feel the breeze. The pattern in the door's art glass evokes the natural world being left behind. Stepping inside, one still does not feel totally enclosed; across the entrance hall are doorways framing a vista of gardens beyond.
After exploring the details, they move on to the houses themselves, looking at 24 houses ranging from the modest, unassuming Brandt-Serrurier House in Altedena--a single story cottage built in 1905--to their greatest creation, The Gamble House in Pasadena. A short history and examination of details is given to each house, but by and large the houses are allowed to speak for themselves through dazzling photos. One of the most striking features of each house is the honey-colored light that fills each room as it pours through Japanese-inspired stained glass chandeliers and is reflected from rich mahogany and teak floors and furniture. To walk through a Greene & Greene house was to walk through a work of fine art. As Henry Greene said, "The idea was to eliminate everything unnecessary, to make the whole as direct and simple as possible, but always with the beautiful in mind as the first goal." As Greene & Greene: Masterworks clearly shows, they succeeded brilliantly. --Laszlo Simonyi

                Book Description

In the first decades of the 20th century, Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene almost single-handedly defined the Arts and Crafts aesthetic in America as the architectural firm Greene & Greene. The only full-color survey of the firm's greatest works-including several newly restored to their original grandeur-Greene & Greene reveals the consummate artistry that ensured the brothers' place among the most brilliant of American architects. An in-depth tour of 25 magnificent homes, this book examines the creative evolution of their style. From the Gamble House in Pasadena, California whose director contributes the book's foreword to lesser-known gems throughout the state, Greene & Greene is a wonderful introduction to the brothers' work, and a warm homage to the charms of this refined domestic architecture.

We were very disappointed at the quality of printing, inferior paper stock, and lack of clarity in the photographs. At the "coffee table" price we were expecting much higher resolution in the color photographs and better quality paper.

A great coffee table book about some of the most (to my mind) beautiful houses to come out of America. The photos alone are worth the price. You can also get some great ideas out of this book when you or "the Boss" decide to upgrade your digs.

                Book Description

This new edition of the classic, Building with Nature: Roots of the San Francisco Bay Region Tradition, focuses on the beginnings (1865 and on) of the Bay Area shingle style and Arts & Crafts collaboration in California, and the origins of the trend toward building simple rustic homes in harmony with nature. Freudenheim explores how and why a small, influential group of Californians (including Joseph Worcester, Bernard Maybeck, Charles Keeler, William Keith, Charles Lummis, A. Page Brown, and others)--all of whom had come from the East or from England--were especially devoted to Ruskin and the Arts & Crafts style and how this combined with their dedication to California's natural beauty to create a unique architectural movement.

Ms. Freudenheim has provided us with a very well-written book about how new and developing architectureal styles happen, using the SF Bay Area and the development of the Arts and Crafts style as a perfect example. Ms. Freudenheim's excellant research and engaging style shows, in words and photos, how a web of people and buildings continually interact and thus result in a new style. In this greatly expanded edition of a now hard-to-find great original book, we learn about these people, their interactions, and how this resulted in a new archtectural style. This book will be enjoyed by anyone interested in the Arts and Crafts style, either as a home owner, collector, scholar, or as a total observer of the Arts and Crafts movement and it's recent resurgence. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Arts and Crafts.......2006-01-26

Leslie Freudenheim has captured an era that has given great beauty to our lives. With grace and wisdom she has presented the San Francisco Bay Area as a landscape filled with the richness of the architectural geniuses who gave the area their distinctive creations. The beauty of the arts and crafts buildings complements nature, and bonds our living spaces into it. The author has, with a great deal of style, significantly enriched our experience of this fine period in our history.

5 out of 5 stars Origins of the "Arts & Crafts" in America.......2006-01-22

This is the first book to truly explore the origins of the American Arts & Crafts Movement. A group in San Francisco began constructing simpler buildings and furnishing them with what eventually was called Mission furniture. This lead to the nationwide popularization of Craftsman homes and furniture by Stickley and others. If you have an interest in Architecture or the "Arts & Crafts" you should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Maybeck scholar reviews Arts and Crafts book.......2006-01-16

Building With Nature, when first published in 1974, brought attention to Bay Region Architecture as a tradition, as the progenitor of simple homes, grounded on the philosophy of Bernard Maybeck and Charles Keeler among others, and as an influence on residential architecture of subsequent generations. In this new and significantly expanded book, Leslie Freudenheim broadens the inquiry toward a wider appreciation of indigenous forms of California architecture, and an understanding of the relation of natural building and environmental sensitivity to the international Arts and Crafts Movement. The book is a must for any Arts and Crafts devotee and architectural history, personal, or professional library.

5 out of 5 stars Building with Nature--Review.......2006-01-14

This is a very important reexamination of the American origins of the Arts and Crafts Movement and the major contibutions of a small group of Bay Area designers. The central role is occupied by the Reverend Joseph Worcester who created one of the true landmarks of the movement with the Church of the New Jerusalem in San Francisco. The author provides new context and a great amount of new reseach. This book is a major accomplishment.

                Book Description

The Arts & Crafts Movement had a profound effect on twentieth century design. It was a precursor to the minimalism of the day, yet imbued with a quiet eloquence based in careful, exquisite design. The natural materials, the subtlely organic forms began to shape living spaces across the country. In California, whose population was swelling in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, so-called "Mission Furniture" seemed perfectly at home amidst the Spanish influenced architecture of the past and the bungalows that were beginning to line the streets. This new book is a survey of the influence of the Arts & Crafts Movement in the home. Drawn from an exhibit at the California Heritage Museum in Santa Monica, it covers everything from furniture to pottery, from lighting to books. Each item is illustrated in its setting, giving it a decorative context. In addition the items appear in individual full color photographs, showing its detail. Among the interesting collections is a group of chairs that virtually shows the evolution of the mission style. This book will delight and inform.

                  Book Description

As much as furniture designs reveal about the individuals who use them, they provide insight into the culture from which they emerged. San Francisco Contemporary Furniture is the first in a series of books examining the work of young furniture designers in different cities and regions across the globe. It showcases a selection of work from a young and emerging generation of Bay Area-based designers of furniture, decorative objects, and utilitarian elements for the home. Commenting both directly and indirectly on how Bay Area designs feed on local environment and culture, the book also aims to reveal how local elements are translated beyond the borders of San Francisco through these designers' work. A thoughtful and unified selection of new design, the book is organized thematically according to the tendencies and values these designers share.

This book is an exciting book all about the Welsh Springer Spaniel. The pictures all look like they have been pasted into the book from a personal collection, all though they haven't! The pages are smooth and it is hardcover. One the inside front and back covers there is a picture of a dog with arrows pointing to points of interest (ie: stop, withers, feathering). A wonderful book and worth the price too!

I have to disagree with the other reviews. I felt the book was very much "one of a series" of breed books. The photos and text seemed sterile and lacking enthusiasm. I preferred Anne Walton's book.

This book is written by a Welsh Springer breeder/enthusiast. Many photos; they are glossy photo quality. Other dog books seem to come from a series with the same chapters except for 1 or 2 about the dog on the cover.

I was thrilled to read the title of this anthology as it related to my research. However, it did not include the American focus that I was looking for. While it did offer essential information, its American focus concentrates mainly on the collector Samuel Bancroft. However, it is still a solid resource for Pre-Raphaelite studies. It also offers good information about the movement's patrons. On plus note, it includes some of the foremost scholars on the area of Pre-Raphaelitism. While the title did not fully indicate its contents, I found it a worthwhile book. It makes a great compliment to Susan Casteras' book about Pre-Raphaelitism in 19th-century America.

                  Book Description

Not so long ago most fresh food on North American tables came from home gardens and local farmers markets. Today, the average item of food travels more than a thousand miles before it lands on our tables. It's a remarkable technological accomplishment, but has not proven to be healthy for our communities, our land or us.

Through stories and simple "whole foods" recipes, Mary Beth Lind and Cathleen Hockman-Wert explore how the food we put on our tables impacts our local and global neighbors. They show the importance of eating local, seasonal food—and fairly traded food—and invite readers to make choices that offer security and health for our communities, for the land, for body and spirit.

Simply in Season offers a starting point encouraging you to feed both your body and spirit with nutritious food and challenging ideas about the world around you. Woven throughout the recipe pages of each season are writings, tidbits of information to reflect upon while the onions saute, the soup boils, or the bread bakes.

This is one of the best cookbooks using fresh fruits and vegetables I've seen in a long time. I've been cooking and collecting cookbooks for years and to find a gem like this one really excited me. I have purchased several for my store as my customers love natural. The recipes in this book are 'dinner party' quality and outstanding! I'm sure you won't be displeased!

This book will appeal to every one that loves good nutrisous food. The receipes are easy to follow and the ingredients easy to obtain. The book covers a good variety of dishes and are set out for seasonal convenience. This approach makes it easy to find something suitable for any meal at any time.

                  5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-06-14

I received this cookbook in December 05. It is now Spring, 07 and I have cooked my way through it. I love it. This book has given me so much more confidence in my cooking abilities. I don't fret when friends come over for dinner because I know I have my SIS Cookbook in hand.

The recipes are simple, easy to prepare with not a lot of ingredients. Typically, they are pretty quick to put togehter. I love that they use in season ingredients and that they are healthy recipes.

The Maple Parsnip Soup and Red Lentil Coconut Curry are two of our favorites! Enjoy!

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook!.......2007-04-19

For anyone interested in healthy recipes that are in sync with the seasons I highly recommend this cookbook. I bought it in winter so thus far I have only cooked meals out of the winter section and they have been great (ie. sweet potato black bean burritos). It feels good to be cooking with produce that is in season, I feel like I am doing what I can to help my local economy and also decrease the amount of pollution from my food being flown around the world. There are some religious undertones to the book, I think the authors are Mennonites, I personally don't mind it because it is just a quote or two, but some people may not like that. All in all, great cookbook; buy it!

I bought my original copy of this book in the Amish community of Kalona, Iowa in 1977. It has shaped my attitudes toward cooking with thoughtfulness and sensible use of in-season foods ever since. My old copy is worn and tattered from constant use. Very little about it is out-of-date in today's world, in fact, it is perhaps more relevent than ever. I value the lessons about living with care and without waste as well as the recipes.

Although this is not specifically a vegetarian/vegan cookbook, the information about using plant proteins gives a fantastic nutritional education for vegetarian/vegans, and there are tons of tried-and-true recipes for quinoa, soy, and beans. Helps us veggies feel 'frugal' to know that we're following centuries old wisdom about getting the most protein for your penny!

I love, Love, LOVE this book! My 1970's version is worth far more to me than a mere collection of recipes--it's also full of nutritional advice, spending advice (albeit outdated, but the idea remains), and missionary stories (I especially like the ones about "abundance"). Now she is gone, but her relatives and fellow church members have taken up the torch, writing follow-on books.

I have been known to read this book as I would a novel, reliving her stories in my mind, and using her tables and charts for source material on many blog articles--women today have forgotten so much, or were never taught in the first place. My opinion is that PROPER Home Ec classes need to be brought back into the schools with a vengeance, and Doris's info should be worked into the curriculum. We've pretty much all become slaves to the microwave, and our waistlines and weight show it. Seemingly nobody cooks for real any more--Doris would be disgusted if she were around today.

Doris was a Mennonite, and I am an Atheist. Nevertheless, I still value this book as if it were my bible.

this would be the one book I would grab on the way out the door. I wish I'd known of it when I was a young bride. I've given it to many people. Besides recipes, it is a way of life. "Gathering Up the Fragments" is a part of each section which teaches cooks how to diversify resources and feed more with less. A classic.

Extending the Table calls itself "a world community cookbook," but it is far more than that. Yes, there are recipes here from all over the globe: Sesame Spinach Salad from Korea, Hunter's Stew from Poland, and Watermelon Jan from Botswana. There are myriad rice dishes, lots of recipes featuring beans and lentils, and an array of delicious beverages--from Philippine Punch to a Ginger Cooler from the Ivory Coast. But what makes this cookbook so special is its social conscience: following the lead of Doris Janzen Longacre, author of the More-with-Less Cookbook, Extending the Table invites readers to reduce their own levels of consumption and share resources with others around the world. Even more, it encourages us to learn from the global community. In addition to the recipes, there are stories about both individuals and whole cultures, explanations of the importance of certain types of food in different lands, and the rituals that surround particular meals. Extending the Table is the work of the Mennonite Central Committee, and many of the contributors are missionaries whose faith in the values of humility, community, and respect for others imbues the pages of this thought-provoking book. Extending the Table is truly food for the body and soul!

We've had this book for several years now, and still use it frequently. We like foods from all over the world, we don't have much time to cook but like dishes made from scratch, cholesterol is a concern in our household, and unusual ingredients are a problem with some ethnic-y cookbooks. This book is very good on all these fronts.

Other pluses: It's modestly sized and spiral-bound, so it doesn't take up much counterspace and stays open to the desired page. The interspersed black-and-white photos of people cooking in other cultures, along with the quotes from the Americans who contributed the recipes after living overseas, make the book fun - and thought-provoking - to browse thru.

                        Product Description

A history book and cookbook combined. Since the first edition of The Hutterite Treasury of Recipies was published in 1986, this best selling cookbook has been reprinted more than 30 times. In this expanded edition we once again have included a section that deals with the lifestyle and history of the Hutterites. Most of the recipies remain the same, and new ones have been added. Here you will find authentic mouth watering dishes, soups and borschts, desserts, pies, cookies, etc. from one of North America's traditional communal groups. Each recipe has been adapted for use in average-sized households so you can enjoy the basic and robust cuisine that has been tradition in Hutterite dining halls for many generations. Each recipe is easy to follow and requires mostly common affordable ingredients. Try them -- you'll love them!

The Guide would be useful to an interior decorator. I was looking for help in estimating cost and materials needed to build a porch.

                        5 out of 5 stars unusually helpful.......2001-03-09

I could not find any other books like this that showed me all the possibilities and helped me decide what kind of room was right for our house, where to put the room, and even how to decorate it.This isn't a book about building it yourself but about getting your own goals and ideas straight before you call in the builder or the architect or the seller of sunroom additions,

This book was a typical biography, good for reports and whatnot, it has some of Turner's Paintings, and it has a lot of information.

This book is basically unreadable. Impenetrable metaphysical terminology is used in dense, convoluted sentences to convey abstruse theories of meaning (at least I think that's what it is) in such a way as to be completely and utterly opaque. Half the time I didn't know what the guy was talking about, and I have a degree in this stuff and belong to Mensa. If you're interested in Turner, you'd do better to look elsewhere.

Some good reproductions though, and if you're just interested in the pictures, the price is right. Hence the two stars; the text would be zero, since it's useless.
