A Valuable Reference Work.......2005-02-02
I have included the updated edition of this book in several of my bibliographies for the children's books I'm currently writing because the presidential profiles are, for the most part, very readable, informative, and enlightening.
Great basic reference.......2001-02-18
This book was recently updated as it seeks to include all of the presidents. The fact that earlier editions of this book have been in print for several decades is a testiment to its fine quality. It is written for the late elemntary to middle school grade level but is a nice quick reference even for adults. The book tends to whitewash certain controversies and treat presidents in a more favorable light than might a longer, adult oriented book. Still, the book gives the basics of major scandals in the presiencies of Grant, Harding, Nixon, etc. Furthermore, the book gives the reader a basic understanding of who each of our presidents was and what the basic issues were during the presidency of each. Knowing the basics of each of our presidents is important for good citizenship and this book fills the bill nicely. I hope that this book will encourage readers to want to read full legnth biographies of some of the presidents profiled or, at least to delve deeper into their presidencies by reading a more complex, adult level book of this type. I highly recommend this great introduction to our presidents.

I can't believe I purchased a book that is simply a compilation of logos that vary from good to terrible. This time David E. Carter had very little to say and the book is only acceptable if you are a beginner in the graphic design industry. I was excited to see a book published that was specific to the coastal area of the Carolinas. The book contains information on all of the most common landscape plants used in the area including a month by month guide to the care for each species. It has been very helpful to me in planning and caring for my "garden."

Karin Rosenthal manages to bring a given mood to each of her photographs, in addition to the excellent images she portrays. The majority of the photographs in this book bring the viewer into an almost physical contact with the subtle portrails of the human form. This is not a book of abject erotica, but more a celebration of the different parts of the human form.

There is a subtle quality to Karin Rosenthal's photographs that is very hard to describe in words, which will fall short in adverbs to describe her beautifully elegant images.
She focuses her work on the human body without allowing the body itself to dominate the work. It is where she composes moist landscapes, where human flesh is the lands and dark, black water the erotic mirror for this living island of flesh, that her work strikes a primeval chord. This is high quality, rarified fine art photography at its best. Don't expect to find fuzzy, oily lenses with soft-focus images here. What you will find is very good photography with well-honed dark room and compositional skills. She truly flexes her artistic muscles in this book!

JFK tagged him "Mr. Social Security." LBJ praised him as the "planner, architect, builder and repairman on every major piece of social legislation [since 1935]." The New York Times called him "one of the country's foremost technicians in public welfare." Time portrayed him as a man of "boundless energy, infectious enthusiasm, and a drive for action." His name was Wilbur Cohen.
For half a century from the New Deal through the Great Society, Cohen (1913-1987) was one of the key players in the creation and expansion of the American welfare state. From the Social Security Act of 1935 through the establishment of disability insurance in 1956 and the creation of Medicare in 1965, he was a leading articulator and advocate of an expanding Social Security system. He played that role so well that he prompted Senator Paul Douglas's wry comment that "an expert on Social Security is a person who knows Wilbur Cohen's telephone number."
The son of Jewish immigrants, Cohen left his Milwaukee home in the early 1930s to attend the University of Wisconsin and never looked back. Filled with a great thirst for knowledge and wider horizons, he followed his mentors Edwin Witte and Arthur Altmeyer to Washington, D.C., and began a career that would eventually land him a top position in LBJ's cabinet as Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare.
Variously described as a practical visionary, an action intellectual, a consummate bureaucrat, and a relentless incrementalist, Cohen was a master behind-the-scenes player who turned legislative compromise into an art form. He inhabited a world in which the passage of legislation was the ultimate reward. Driven by his progressive vision, he time and again persuaded legislators on both sides of the aisle to introduce and support expansive social programs. Like a shuttle in a loom he moved invisibly back and forth, back and forth, until the finely woven legislative cloth emerged before the public's eye.
Nearly a decade after his death, Cohen and his legacy continue to shadow the debates over social welfare and health care reform. While Congress swings with the prevailing winds in these debates, Social Security's prominence in American life remains vitally intact. And Wilbur Cohen is largely responsible for that.

"Looking After: A Son's Memoir" is as loving a tribute as I can imagine. It is a blend of joy and sorrow as Mr. Daniel's remembers and shares his caring for his dying mother. I have mentioned this book to friends who have also cared for dying parents and each person to whom I gave the book found in it a companion. It is a wise and honest book. As the pages progress, I had the sense that Mr. Daniels was growing more clear as to who his mother was, and in doing so loved her all the more. He lets her go at the end, with gratitude for a life well lived.

This book was a pleasant surprise. I expected the dry recitation of facts and adequate photography of the average collector's book, but that's not what I got. The narrative is fun, with much of the primary author's personality shining through, and the photography is lovely.
The book is beautifully designed. Literary quotes about jewelry and a sense of a personal connection with the authors enhance the text. I found myself reading the entire book instead of just looking up the parts I wanted to know about. The information is thorough and detailed.
Since this is the first text on antique enamel, one would expect it to do well among collectors, but this exceeds those expectations and will be an asset to anyone in the antique business.

I spent hours at the local bookstore browsing through the "Pregnancy and Childcare" section, and this is the book I chose. Dr. Miriam Stoppard thoughtfully educates new parents-to-be with unbiased information and illustrations. Other books seemed to be either too clinical or trying too hard to be "down to earth" or "real". I appreciate their efforts, but I can find that kind of information online or check it out from the library for a quick read. This is a fascinating book that covers everything from genetic counseling to sex after delivery and will be an invaluable guide for anyone interested in learning more about childbirth.
