Essential Reference for Marin Naturalists.......2005-05-18
This book is actually quite outdated as far as nomenclature goes and also does not give much detail about the species beyond that in the key. It has no pictures and is not for the casual wildflower enthusiast. It does have one great benefit, however, which is extremely detailed information about where and in what habitat a particular species may be found. This info is ectremely helpful in narrowing down plant i.d.s and determining the likelihood of a particular species occuring in your area.

Places worth exploring........2007-06-07
What a great guidebook this is to the back roads and the stories that await. Douglas Waitley has presented the Center of Florida in such a way that even those who have lived in these parts for years will find new places worth exploring.
Waitley is an advocate of getting off the interstates as much as possible, which is harder to do in Florida than most places since there simply aren't as many back roads as in other states that have had a couple of centuries more of transportation and travel. Then again, there is plenty to explore if you are willing to slow down and see what is around the next bend.
And around the next bend are places with exotic names like Chassahowitzka Swamp and Lacoochee, Micanopy, Mascotte, Okahumpka, Yalaha, Lake Beauclair and Hontoon Island. In these pages, Calvin Coolidge rubs shoulders with Elvis Presley and you will find everything from horse country and swimming holes to missionaries and the Honky Tonk Freeway.
The guidebook takes you on consecutive journeys of under 50 to about 125 miles each, and there is a lot of history and scenery and lore packed in to each of the tours. With Waitley we travel to places where Desoto wandered, to the dens of alligators and thieves, to early settlements that were so close knit ethnically that when the young moved away they became virtual ghost towns, and more.
We find out about J C Penney's lost utopia and Ma Barker's last stand. We hear about buried and yet to be found treasure and the best places to shop for antiques. Want to see the manatee or a 3000-year old tree? Waitley can get you there. The maps and directions are easy as can be. Suggestions for enjoying nature and for stopping for a meal are included in each of the tours.
The book includes lots of good black and white photos taken by the author on his rambles and travels. The people he met populate the text and make the region come alive for the reader.
David Waitley loves Florida and it shows. By the time you read this book, you will have fallen in love with it, too; with all of its surprise and mystery, its local color and eccentricity. A perfect guidebook for being on the back roads, it is also a great armchair traveler's companion.
This is the ultimate Florida vacation book. Magical........2006-10-08
I used this book to take a seven day vacation last summer and it was probably the best vacation I've ever had and I've had a lot.
I went alone and drove on one lane roads through the incredibly beautiful central regions of Florida. Many times there were hours when I never saw another car. When going through Ocala National Forest I got so hungry (no restaurants at all) I finally saw two women selling peaches at a roadside stand and they gave me one which was my only food until I got to my motel that evening on the other side of the forest. I mean we are talking complete wilderness. Desolation. Unspoiled beauty in the raw.
Let me repeat it so you get it. I am talking about real beauty. Hours and days of it.
I saw ancient fishcamps that made me think I had gone through a time warp to a hundred years ago. One has a tugboat to pull a metal slab across the beautiful St. John's River that was supposed to be a ferry to carry cars. It listed so badly to one side that one side of the slab was actually under the surface of the water. No one was around at all and I wandered around for about an hour. There were tiny anciet cabins- wooden, with a front door with a screen, and a window on each side, showing no signs of ever having been painted, but no people anywhere.
I swam in one of the indescribable mineral springs in Ocala Forest. These must be the most beautiful places in the entire world including the almost two dozen islands of the Carribbean I have been to, and Hawaii.
I actually saw the water bubbling up out of the ground in them. It was crystal clear but a bit chilly. But it looked like what I expect to see after I die.
The entire trip was like this. Forget Orlando and the theme parks and get this book. Then follow the hand drawn map in it. You will go on roads and see things most people could never dream of.
Detailed and informative........2005-08-16
We would like to take mini vacations on Florida's backroads. In reading this book, I can see that it will make planning our trips much easier.
Great Fun.......2005-07-11
Our family just spent a weekend following the trails of this book. It was so interesting and fun to read along the way. It's great to learn more about Florida -- especially how life was before a/c and the Disney era. Bravo!
Fun!.......2000-01-30
We recently used this terrific book in exploring some wonderful and little used roads in Pasco County. It's great to have direction to unique Florida locales that aren't centered around Disney World or the beach.

The co-discoverer of the AIDS virus tells his story of scientific discovery.
Customer Reviews:
Greatest Biolologist since Sabin and Salk.......2006-01-28
This is a must read for anyone interested in science, and is especially inspiring towards anyone interested in pursuing biomedical research. Only a scientist like Robert Gallo could have been resilent enough to continue great discoveries (eg. IL2( , inspite of being relentlessly besieged by nay sayers, a zealous journalist, and one politician. Gallo shows that despite all odds ,one may still rise like a phoenix from ashes. Bravo! Ex Libris!
Mars.......2005-12-01
Virus Hunting provides an interesting understanding into the scientific quest in the study of tumor cell biology. It lays the foundation of the most complex of viral, epidemiological parthenogenesis, that of Human Retro virology, HIV-AIDS. The lab tech procedures used at NCI at the time: mass tissue cell growth cultures, assay developments, etc., continue to hold significant disease applicability, and contributes to future disease models investigations and research and development.
Since, virology is an esoteric discipline; the book was designed to reach wide audiences, presenting a more personal account. For HIV-AIDS research purposes, a plethora of academic references can be found in reknown science journals.
The book describes, in addition, an extraordinary life story, tragedy as the source of creative scientific inspiration, culminating ultimately to discovery. Some readers may miss these subtle nuances.
Great ideas originate from contentious, unorthodox individuals who defy and cut across the grain, remembering and giving gratitude to the critics and pretenders; however, vapid for they are as modern muses. When I read the book, I think of that rambunctious ass, Amadeaus and those scowling would be, Scalieries epitomizing those less accomplished.
The rating was lowered solely on the grounds of poor mechanics.
Meh..........2004-11-17
Found this book at the library while searching for helpful books for my science project... yeh, i'm a high-school student..
and seriously, this book does have a lot of information...
but, the book kinda really drags, and it's boring, and really,
i didn't need to know about who found this little detail and who examined this thing at what time where and blah. it was full of trivial infos people don't really need.
Virus Hunting by Gallo.......2004-08-18
This is a good book for scientific study and evaluation of
viral strains-their etiology and treatment approaches. The
research of cancer-causing retroviruses is discussed in humans.
These viral strains may be carried from chickens to people.
The retrovirus in chicken sarcoma and oncogenes when incorporated
into the genetic code of a virus quickly convert normal cells
to cancerous ones. Retroviruses can mutate. The work contains
a good description of the development of the Elisa blood testing
technique. This work would be perfect for a school project in
science or medicine.
Interesting reading but very poor science - no references!.......2004-07-20
Dr. Robert Gallo has written a very interesting and informative book describing his career and how the HIV virus was discovered. In the final chapter he refutes the criticisms of Dr. Duesberg, who later wrote "Inventing the AIDS Virus". Dr. Gallo's arguments sound very convincing; however he does not provide a single reference. He makes many statements such as "this has been found", "studies have shown", etc. but never provides references. This makes it impossible to verify his claims or read the original source data. It is suspicious that Dr. Gallo does not disclose his scientific sources. Dr. Duesberg on the other hand, in his book refuting Gallo's arguments, provides 856 footnotes referring to publications in the most highly respected scientific and medical journals. In conclusion, it is a very difficult scientific problem to understand HIV, AIDS, and if there is a relationship or not. By not providing footnotes Dr. Gallo has made it more difficult for the serious inquirer.

Book Description
When AIDS was first reported in 1981, scientists disagreed about what caused the disease and how it was spread. Controversies continued when two different research groups claimed credit for identifying the virus called HIV as the cause of AIDS in 1984. These and related debates shook the scientific world and affected the development of AIDS research and prevention.

Book Description
Spirited young traveler Suki Summers becomes a housekeeper for an exclusive gentleman's club in London. Club Crme has been founded by the debonair Sir Simeon for chaps who want an elegant retreat where they can relax and indulge in their taste for old-fashioned frolics. Her first impression is that the place is very stuffy, but it isn't long before she realizes that anything goes - as long as it is behind closed doors where she is required to either keep watch or join in. Suki soon becomes very popular - with enigmatic secretary Miss Sugar and with Sir Simeon himself. But when she has a close encounter with Sir Simeon's son and the hunting set at the family's country seat, she has to decide where her sexual loyalties really lie.
Customer Reviews:
Promising characters that never flesh out.......2004-11-02
This book started off well with some very intrigueing characters like Sir Simeon, his son and Mimi Breeze. Lots of history there that is never quite explained. The club itself seems fantastical to the extreme, not at all believable. If the story had focused on the four main characters and left out throwing in and out more sexual partners, it would have worked much better. I also do not like to read about a heroine who gets off on having sex with men she doesn't see or know or even recognize from previous encounters. The story hinted at romantic themes in the beginning, but by the end it was pretty much just sex with anyone/anytime
Book Description
This classic text has been updated and revised by the leading primulas expert. In terms of both the number of varieties grown and its popularity, Primula is one of the greatest garden genera. It is also among the largest and most widespread with approximately 430 species. This new edition includes a major taxonomic revision, information on the evolutionary history of the genus, a history of the exploration and introduction of Primula, cultivation, propagation and hybridization techniques, and a discussion of pests and diseases. This book is beautifully illustrated with over 100 drawings and photographs, including paintings by the award-winning botanical illustrator Brigid Edwards.
Customer Reviews:
The most precise and beautiful information available........1999-01-21
John Richards monograph on the genus Primula is the best book I have seen on the subject. I work with primroses every day and it would be much more difficult without this clarifying volume. The theoretical background is sound, the disposition is easy to follow and the illustrations are both informative and pleasing to the eye.
Book Description
Janie and Sally escape to the English countryside hoping to get some sun and relaxation. When the weather turns nasty, the two women find themselves confined to their remote cottage with little to do except eat, drink and talk about men. They soon become the focus of attention for the lusty farmers in the area who are well-built, down-to-earth and very different from the boys they have been dating in town. When Maddock, the rough and ready son of the cottage's previous owner, reckons he can still use the girls' holiday home and everything in it as if it were his own, Janie and Sally have a bit of a struggle on their hands!

Book Description
A garden pond only becomes a feast for the eyes with loads of plants in and around the water.
Lots of people aren't satisfied with a garden pond that livens up the landscape from spring to fall with fresh green shades alone. It should display plenty of bright splashes of color as well. This is mainly provided by the flowers of a wide variety of marsh and aquatic plants.
Species ideally suited for cultivation in and around the garden pond include numerous representatives of the iris and primula families, and of course the waterlilies. All provide a fantastic floral display. The skilful combination of members of these families can be used to ensure that from March to September there are always flowers in and around the pond, with the intervening greenery providing an attractive color contrast.
For the past 20 years Axel Gutjahr has been heavily involved with garden ponds, with a particular interest in plants. In this book he not only presents these plants through beautiful color photos and text, but also provides valuable hints on their sitting and cultivation requirements, and thus the basis for the successful setup of a perfect garden pond.
An explosion of colors with over 110 high quality photos, 64 pages, hardcover.
Customer Reviews:
Just a beautiful Book.......2007-01-23
All of the Aqualog books are excellent value, although they are not particularly cheap. They are full to the brim with first class colour photographs and to reproduce these in a book is an expensive process. Whether they are about the beautiful fish, plants or flowers, in this case they latter, they are the most comprehensive identification books you can buy. They never become dated because as new fish etc. become available to the aquarist trade the books are updated., or supplements are produced.
This is a beautiful book and for anyone who is interested in the subject of garden ponds could prove to be that purchase that you never regret.
