Average book........2006-08-24
My old Michigan Wildflower book was over 25 years old. I thought this one would have much more wildflowers in it. It did not. I was somewhat dissapointed in it.
Revised edition with wildflower walks.......2004-07-10
This book was originally published in 1985, and my copy belongs to the eighth printing in 1999. Its popularity is well-deserved. Author and photographer, Harry C. Lund has spent many years hiking through bogs, forests, meadows, and sand dunes in Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas and its off-shore islands in order to put together this book for us. I have yet to find a Michigan wild flower that isn't listed in this guide. The book is well-bound and would easily fit into your backpack for a walk through the wild.
The flower photographs are grouped by color for ease of location. They are then listed in the order in which they appear during the growing season, which is a little trickier to use. I basically start at the beginning of a color group and page through until I find the flower I'm trying to identify. There are generally six photographs to a page, with the text on the facing page. In some cases, the photographs are a bit too small to easily recognize the flower, but when combined with the text there should be no identification problem.
At the beginning of "Michigan Wildflowers in Color," the author has illustrated textual terms such as 'stipules' or 'basal leaves' with a collection of line drawings. The plant descriptions include location, seasonal display, height, and information on whether the flower is protected and should not be picked or moved.
There is a quiz at the back of the book to test your 'flower power.' There is also an 'Observer's List' to keep track of the flowers you do find. Unfortunately, the first entry I wanted to check off wasn't on the list! Perhaps this is because Crown Vetch is not really a wild flower, although its photograph and description appear in the main section of this book.
The author has also mapped out eight wildflower trails in various Michigan habitats, plus the seasonal species of flowers that can be found there.
In total, "Michigan Wildflowers in Color" is a very helpful guide, especially when used in combination with a book like the Peterson "Field Guide to Wildflowers" where the drawings might serve as a confirmation or a backup to Lund's photographs. Leaves in particular are easier to identify through Peterson's drawings.
Michigan Wildflowers in Color.......2002-08-23
I have found this guide extremely helpful in identifying species found near our summer home in Michigan. It has excellent photographs, arranged by color, and a chart showing habitats, seasons, and growing conditions. There is a blank chart for entering your own finds. It is informative and user friendly. I would recommend it highly to both novice and experienced wildflower lovers.

Who wants to waste all their time looking around shops when Suzy Gershman has done all the leg work for you? This guide is extremely helpful. Gershman understands what travllers with limited time want: a shortcut to the stores that really interest them so they can be free to explore the best things about London: the theaters, the museums, walking Hampstead Heath, and meeting new people. Her guide to Paris is also terrific.

Beautiful Book!.......2007-06-11
This book is a must for anyone that collects or deals in Victorian Jewelry! Good information with exquisite photos of the finest examples of Victorian Jewelry.
Victorian well done.......2006-08-22
Victorian jewelry is one of my passions and I both collect and sell it. This book has fabulous illustrations, great information, and a bit of a different slant than other books on Victorian jewelry. I am so glad I did not miss this one, and bought copies for both my home and shop libraries. Worth twice the price!
Opened my eyes to a vast array of jewelry styles that I wasn't familiar with.......2006-07-07
This quite a different take on jewelry than most books, and accordingly very worthwhile. I got this book out of the library, read it cover-to-cover, and I am still buying a copy. The pictures are absolutely gorgeous and wonderfully detailed.
These are the common, cheaper, but still beautiful pieces that are normally overlooked. I think that people who like Art Nouveau, which concentrated more on design than the expense of the materials, would find them particularly interesting. In addition, Dawes take us through the various fads of the time period. The text explains many of the peculiarities behind the rise of such styles (e.g.: aluminum was once rare; aristocrats wore iron jewelry to show that they had supposedly patriotically donated their real jewels to the government, etc.)
A very worthwhile addition to a jewelry book collection.
Secondary Victorian treasure pieces.......2006-03-19
During her nearly sixty-four-year reign Queen Victoria produced a cultural and fashion following particularly notable in the jewelry world, where English and European Jewelers produced less expensive pieces mimicking the queen's, which were worn by the middle class of her times. These pieces were long ignored because of their low value and cheap materials - but today are prized for their workmanship, which VICTORIAN JEWELRY: UNEXPLORED TREASURES reveals in chapters of history following designs, materials, and lovely secondary pieces. Styles presented here have been selected from collections around the world and are displayed through specially commissioned color photos just for this book.
Book Description
A highly readable account of how jewelry and fashion influenced each other and how both were determined by living standards and economics of the Victorian years. Includes lovely examples of jeweled tiaras, brooches, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, lockets, and chains, all set with precious and semi-precious stones. 115 halftones, 66 line illustrations, 10 color plates.

Fascinating Look at Victorian Jewellery.......2006-07-26
Lots of pictures (wish more were in colour, but understandable as to why they're not! The cost would be prohibitive) and information on Victorian jewellery. Recommended to anyone who is interested in that time period or just jewellery in general.

Customer Reviews:
Great Reference Material.......2005-02-28
As on online vintage jewelry dealer, Atlanta vintage jewelry dot com, Warman's book was one of the first in my reference library. Sure, it has some faults, but not to the degree to make the book 'useless'. I used to spend my evenings in bed reading through the pages, getting familiar with the vast array of information.
The book includes excellent pictures with clarity, and lots of them. It covers jewelry designs from various eras, beginning in the mid-1700's through present day.
Many people in the vintage jewelry circles may refer to Warman's as the 'bible' of vintage jewelry as it also covers both fine and costume.
In spite of its somewhat unreliable index referred to by others, this hefty book is well worth the purchase price. I'm glad for mine.
Gail Gupton, Author: The 31-Day Diet of Spiritual Enlightenment and Seekers of Truth.
Drool . . ........2004-08-15
Over the years, Warman's guides to antiques have established a reputation for reliability. This volume is the third (2002) edition of their jewelry guide. It's lavishly illustrated with examples from many styles, eras, and price ranges. It provides a feast for the eyes and a lot of useful information as well.
Romero divides the material according to time period and, when appropriate, according to style and material and country of origin. She gives concise summaries of the essentials of each and links jewelry fashions to world events and clothing styles. Sometimes her discussions are a little too concise for this curious reader ( to be fair, the book is a guide, not an in-depth treatment), but she provides a full bibliography at the end for those who want to dig deeper. There's also a glossary of jewelry-related terminology and a section on marks.
According to the introduction, this edition reflects the increasing globalization of the marketplace and the influence of internet buying. Romero has expanded coverage of Scandinavian jewelry and added discussions of Neo-Renaissance and Beaux-Arts jewelry. Every illustration is in color, and the captions are fully detailed. Several reviewers of earlier editions mentioned that there were problems with the index. These problems seem to have been corrected in this edition.
Any problems I have with this book are mostly quibbles. The author makes a point of linking changes in jewelry fashions to changes in clothing and in social conditions. I wish that she had put in a few period illustrations showing the fashions and the jewelry worn with them. This is probably a little out of the reach of an identification and value guide, but it would have been a nice touch. Nonetheless, this is a wonderful resource for jewelry collectors and, in fact for anyone who thinks they might like to become one.
A visual feast for jewelry lovers.......2004-04-10
"Warman's Jewelry," 3rd edition, by Christie Romero, is subtitled "A Fully Illustrated Identification and Price Guide to 18th, 19th, & 20th Century Fine and Costume Jewelry." The book is full of fascinating and useful features, among them an extensive bibliography, glossary, index, and chronology. There are also a number of appendices, including a hallmark identification guide and a guide to the marks and names on Mexican silver jewelry and metalware.
The 272-page book is full of hundreds of clear, beautiful full color photos of jewelry. Each photo is accompanied by essential information on each piece depicted. The items shown represent a huge price span; in this book you'll see a $336,000.00 gem-encrusted platinum bracelet, a $10.00 brooch shaped like a poodle, and lots in between. Many types of jewelry are pictured: necklaces, cufflinks, earrings, lockets, scarf pins, etc. Included are pieces representing a broad variety of artistic approaches: whimsical, elegant, gaudy, graceful, fierce, futuristic.
Also fascinating is the broad range of materials covered: diamonds, emeralds, opals, turquoise, gold, coral, agate, wood, rhinestones, plastic, brass, porcelain, etc. The photography is accompanied by an interesting, well-written text. Jewelry production is placed in historical and cultural context. There are also special sections devoted to jewelry of particular cultures (Native American, Mexican, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish). Interesting trends such as Victorian-era black jewelry and "eye miniatures" are also highlighted. Overall, this is an endlessly interesting and stunningly beautiful reference work.
AN OLDER PERSON 'S VIEW OF THE SUBJECT.......2000-02-20
AS AN OLDER PERSON, I HAVE 'LIVED THROUGH' MANY OF THE FADS WHICH JEWELRY MANUFACTURERS REFLECT. I STARTED COLLECTING JEWELRY, AND DECIDED TO WRITE A RESOURCE BOOK FOR THE NOVICE. WELL, WHEN I READ MS. ROMERO'S BOOK, I FOUND THAT IT WAS SO INCLUSIVE THAT IN ORDER TO FILL IN THE GAPS, AS IT WERE, MY WORK IS REALLY CUT OUT FOR ME. THIS BOOK IS A WONDERFUL ADDITION TO ANY JEWELRY COLLECTOR'S REFERENCE LIBRARY. THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME THE SPACE TO REVIEW IT.

A great book, with lots of valuble information, but the index, is not accurate.this makes it very frustrating to look things up....warmans should issue partial refunds to the dedicated customers who purchased the book...

For the Home Landscaper.......2007-07-01
The variety of landscaping projects in this book makes it a boon for the do-it-yourselfer. It thrilled me to find a section on building dry stone walls, right at the time I'd collected heaps of granite stones from my New Hampshire garden. I learned a lot about "v" slant, chinking wedge and capstones in just a few pages and it was a big help.
Here's what the book covers:
Lawn Care and Maintenance (Caring for Your Lawn, Restoring a Lawn, Laying Sod, Alternatives to Grass)
Beautiful Gardens (Planting Flowering Bulbs, Planting Roses, Creating a Water Garden, Container Gardening, Growing Ground Covers, Drip Watering System)
Trees, Shrubs, and Hedges (Planting Trees, Pruning Trees, Planting a Hedge, Foundation Plantings, Mulching Your Garden)
Walks and Walls (Laying a Flagstone Footpath, Brick Accents for Walkways, Building Landscaping Walls, Building Dry Stone Walls, Building a Timber Retaining Wall)
Garden Structures (A Garden Arbor, A Post-and-Beam Pavilion, A Graceful Wooden Bridge, A Domed Gazebo)
You can count on Reader's Digest for a quality book (good illustrations & to-the-point text). In some cases you will want to get a whole book on a topic like creating a water garden. This gets you started.

Restoring Faith in American Culture.......2006-11-24
With all of the negativity engendered of late throughout the world about the image of America and Americans, this book (a catalogue from the Brooklyn Museum) is as refreshing as a full-scale Thanksgiving turkey dinner. Based on the exhibition AMERICAN VIEW: MASTERPIECES FROM THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM, this beautifully designed and composed book traces American art from 1824 to 2005, the bulk of the contents of the exhibition and catalogue are from the nineteenth century. Written with great clarity by Teresa A Carbone (she even offers a concise chronology for the span of time the exhibition covers), the works of John Singleton Copley, Charles Wilson Peale, Gilbert Stuart, Asher B. Durand, Abbot Handerson Thayer, George Inness, Raphaelle Peale, Edward Hicks, John Singer Sargent and George Bellows are just a few of the artists whose background with illustrations are offered.
Carbone wisely allows the bulk of this catalogue to let the images speak for themselves and the book is primarily composed of full-page reproductions with complementing commentary opposite the image. Strolling through this book is nostalgic, enriching, and rewarding. The publication of this tome could not have come at a better time when our psyches need a bit of positive input! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, November 06

Book Description
The most comprehensive study of Shifu available, this valuable work explores the life and political milieu of a central figure in Republican China. Krebs provides an intellectual biography of this committed revolutionary and analyzes the importance of Shifu's thought during the New Culture-May Fourth years as his followers fought for influence with the Marxists and later over the issue of alliance with the Nationalists.
