I feel that this book is very complete and extremely helpful. If you own or are interested in corns pick this up because it will be helpful, also the offer lists some considerations before purchasing a corn which is great to see.

Best book of its kind.......2006-05-05

One of the most reader-friendly and authoritative books of its kind Ive ever read. Not only does this book give a solid outline of the natural history of these snakes, but it also answers (Thoroughly!) all the questions/issues that might arise in the captive care/breeding of the corn and rat snakes.

The author, Phil Purser, is an authority on these snakes whom I once had the honor of meeting at a university lecture; his name on a book about herps is a definite stamp-of-quality.

If you have to buy a corn snake book, THIS IS THE ONE!!!!

Awfully vague.......2005-11-28

I bought this book with the hopes that two specific areas would be addressed. The first area was suitable substrate for snake habitats and husbandry in general. There was virtually no discussion about this topic, other than a brief mention that Europeans like to make elaborate habitats whereas Americans typically go simple. The book does address hide boxes, lighting, heating and water needs, but I really wanted to know what materials made for the best substrate. How often does it need to be cleaned/replaced? How should you go about cleaning a replaceable substrate like calcium sand, etc. Sanitation to me is one of the most important aspects of raising a confined animal and there is no discussion of it whatsoever. Secondly, I wanted to understand the feeding process a little better. After failing to induce a young Texas Rat Snake to feed in recent weeks, I wanted to be sure I understood the fine points of feeding. This book talks about different ways to induce feeding, but it doesn't offer any signs or symptoms to look for when one must consider the last resort of force feeding. Will the herp look gaunt? Will it show any other physical signs indicating starvation is fast approaching? How long is too long to go without eating? It further mentions that sometimes snakes don't eat during the winter months even in captivity. So now I'm really at a loss. This book is a very general guide best suited probably for someone who is sitting on the fence as to whether or not to own a rat snake and has yet to decide what type one is interested in purchasing. If you have already made the decision to raise a rat snake, especially if it will be your first snake, this book is not for you. Something much more specific with regards to the two topics above will be required; otherwise, you are jeopardizing the well being of the animal at worst and at best relying on your own instincts to provide a healthy environment for the snake.

Hoping For More Figures Information.......2001-12-29

I wish I had read the first review of the book more closely. I have just begun to collect Bunnykin figures and hoped to get a book with more information on the different figures. This book only has four pages of figures listed and this includes information for Shapeware. It is quite helpful in letting me know that there is so much more out there in the Bunnykins world. If you wish to collect ALL aspects of the Bunnykin world, then this book is for you.

The story behind the Bunnykins creator was very interesting. Included were great colour photos of the various scenes depicted on the dinnerware. Unfortunately, the book provided almost no information on the bunnykins figurines, nor did it offer any guidelines for the value($) of pieces.

In this magisterial autobiography, Josef von Sternberg reflects about his personal career, film and its history and art.
Von Sternberg will always be remembered for one of the most impressive movies of all times 'Der blaue Engel', but his career covers the sound and silent movie period.

It is a very revealing book, not about his personal life, but about his professional viewpoints and struggles.

His actor's direction was based on a penetrating insight into the real human nature. First, he considered that 'the guinea pig of the artist is his own self' and secondly, that 'the average human being lives behind an impenetrable veil and will disclose his deep emotions only in a crisis which robs him of control'.
His professional life was an enduring fight with
(1) the film studios and its producers. He knew their blatant commercialism: 'If a snail were to offer a contribution of value to Hollywood, it would be located instantly'.
(2) his actors (an E. Jannings or a C. Laughton behaved like bad children on the set. A notable exception was his miraculous actress Marlene Dietrich.)
(3) his rivals within the director's guild.
and ultimately when the movie was produced (4) the moral establishment and its servile movie critics.

Von Sternberg understood the profound impact of the film medium, which revealed 'the real world where wealth and poverty live side by side, and where cruelty and indifference can no longer be ignored.' The medium has an amoral basis: 'the strongest appeal to the masses was the simplest one: the formula always revolves around sex and its biological associate, violence. ... One bond that links all audiences is the animal in man.'

He also gives us a penetrating portrait of some of the greatest masters of cinema: D.W. Griffith ('remove these 10000 horses a trifle to the right'), C. Chaplin ('the comic side of humiliation') or E. von Stroheim ('the intensity of his actor's direction').

His ultimate goal was to create 'art', for 'it is easier to kill than to create.'
The overall picture shows us von Sternberg as a noble, passionate, honest, craftful and extremely intelligent movie director.
This autobiography is part thriller, part melo, part drama, part psychoanalysis.
It is an essential read, not only for the film historian.

Sternberg on life, the movies, and Dietrich........2001-08-12

Full of cynical, razor-sharp and often very funny opinions. It's so one-sided, however, that I came away very curious to read what Dietrich herself thought about their relationship-- preferably in her own words.
