Book Description
Cadogan explores "Green Spain"--the country's rich, lush alternative to the dusty and dry south, from La Rioja, famed for its wine, to the serene beaches of Galicia. Spain experts Facaros and Pauls reveal the best of Cantabria, with its international arts festival; the lively summer resort of Santander; and the prehistoric art of the Puento Viesgo Caves and nose out Spain's finest Visigothic architecture in Castile and León. The guide takes visitors to the sights of this increasingly popular region, beginning with the haunted pass at Roncesvalles, and continuing through boisterous Pamplona and glamorous San Sebastián. The authors pick out a trail of extraordinary Romanesque churches, and finish at the great granite shrine of Santiago de Compostela; the end point of the world-famous pilgrimage. Cadogan provides expert guidance on canoeing, fishing, and diving in the rapids of the Asturias and around the Bay of Biscay, as well as golfing in Gijón. Bursting with travel and practical information, rich history and culture chapters, and a detailed food section, Cadogan provides all the necessities to make the most of this beautiful region.

400 hand-picked lodgings, 300 recommended restaurants.......2003-10-10
The collaborative effort of Dana Facaros and Michael Pauls, Northern Spain is a detailed, comprehensive, portable, and "user friendly" travel guide to medieval villages, churches, cathedrals, legends, coastline, art collections, museums and so much more to be found in beautiful northern reaches of Spain. Offering 400 hand-picked lodgings, 300 recommended restaurants, as well as numerous bars and cafes, thirty maps, Spanish language tips, solid travel advice, and more, Northern Spain is an excellent consultation resource for vacationers and business travelers alike. Also very highly recommended for travelers in Spain are the regionally specialized companion guidebooks by Dana Facaros and Michael Pauls: Andalucia and Bilbao & The Basque Lands.
Despite errors, still the most thorough.......2000-11-07
Facaros and Pauls are erudite people, who unfortunately do not always understand the delicate balance between good depth of knowledge, and useless obscure references. Furthermore, they made a few mistakes, and a subtle anti-Catholocism was evident in their writing (i.e. by not mentioing that Covadonga is a pilgrammage destination where a virgin's apparition occurred, and that the Oviedo's cathedral hosts the suderio santo, the rag Jesus wore while on his way to the Crucifixion). We sometimes doubted that the authors had actually visited the places described within, or if so, they they did not understand the guides! While not the best for logistics, this guide does offer the best quantity of history per page.
Northern Spain (Cardogan Guides).......2000-06-05
After much search for a book on Northern Spain. I believe this Cardogan guide to be one of the better ones. It does provide some essentials: overview and history of Spain's northern regions, culture, cuisine and travel highlights. Also good recommendations on where to stay and have a friendly drink with the locals.
A few drawbacks: lack of comprehensive maps of regions in relation to Spain as a country and more specific maps of towns that you may want to visit.
All in all this is the best guide I've found available to get you started and excited about your trip as well as help you focus your travels to a particular area in Northern Spain if time is a concern.

Book Description
Rather than focusing on the well-rehearsed facts of Columbus's achievements in the New World, Valerie Flint looks instead at his imaginative mental images, the powerful "fantasies" that gave energy to his endeavors in the Renaissance. With him on his voyages into the unknown, he carried medieval notions gleaned from a Mediterranean tradition of tall tales about the sea, from books he had read, and from the mappae-mundi, splendid schematic maps with fantastic inhabitants. After investigating these sources of Columbus's views, Flint explains how the content of his thinking influenced his reports on his discoveries. Finally, she argues that problems besetting his relationship with the confessional teaching of the late medieval church provided the crucial impelling force behind his entire enterprise. As Flint follows Columbus to the New World and back, she constantly relates his reports both to modern reconstructions of what he really saw and to the visual and literary sources he knew. She argues that he declined passively to accept authoritative pronouncements, but took an active part in debate, seeking to prove and disprove theses that he knew to be controversial among his contemporaries. Flint's efforts to take Columbus seriously are so convincing that his belief that he had approached the site of the earthly Paradise seems not quaint but eminently sensible on his own terms.

Book Description
This book studies the influence of Hellenism and Greco-Roman philosophy on Philo of Alexandria's view of the Mosaic law. In particular, the book examines how Philo integrated Greco-Roman conceptions of law, such as Unwritten Law, the Law of Nature, and the "Living Law," into his understanding of the Mosaic law of the Jews and the lives of the Patriarchs. Philo transformed Greco-Roman law and shaped it into something peculiar to a Jewish understanding of the cosmos and its creation by one God. Martens examines Philo's creativity in adapting Greco-Roman law to create something new in the annals of philosophy and the apologetic purposes his new philosophy served for Judaism.
