A big help to a newcomer.......2005-12-04

I purchased this book in advance of my move to Jax nearly a year ago. It has some great, honest reviews about a lot of the popular sites in the city, along with highlighting some of the more obsure gems that I was excited to explore. Even with all the information available on the web, I still like to peruse the book for quick ideas on what to do and where to go. It's a fun read and I have learned a lot about some of the great things in Jacksonville because of this neat compilation. Overall, a great introduction to an interesting city. Cheers!

Absolutelly a must!!!.......2004-03-16

I bought this book because it was recommended with the map of Jacksonville.... no intention at all! However, when I received it at home, I fell in love in it! Absolutelly! It has great writing style, photos that made me love Jax before I go there, things one needs to know, no matter if he/she is just a tourist, or intent to live there. I am in the second group (hopefully), so I learned all: from the shopping malls, through schools to the good description of neiborghoods... Definitelly a good book. I will reconfirm this when I go there (in couple months)

Surprisingly great!.......2003-02-10

I am moving to Jacksonville and was looking for some information. This book provided basics and then some. Unlike most travel books, this one is designed to be read straight through, but is divided into specific sections for those who are looking for certain information. A lot of information in a very easy to read format. Would gladly purchase more in the series when moving again!

I laughed I cried - I loved it.......2001-05-21

The title is a little off-putting - I did not think I wanted to read about hospice patients' last days. A friend convinced me to look at it. It is fantastic. The author relates her experiences taking 2 dogs to a hospice. Each chapter is about her encounter with a different patient. Each story evolves into a parable about life, and death. You will cry. But you will also laugh and be uplifted. You will be amazed at what animals can do to lift the human spirit when it is down. I am not aware of the author writing any other books, but I would love to read more from her - she paints a picture that is so vivid, you feel like you are in the room with her and the dogs. I have given this book to many of my friends and they all are raving about it. You must read this book!

human spirit lifted by pets - cry AND laugh.......2001-05-16

This book is wonderful! It describes the authors visits to a hospice facility with 2 dogs. She paints a vibrant picture of the visits. Each chapter discusses a different visit. Each chapter also describes a lesson in living - the author weaves a philosophical lesson in life into each visit. The books title may mislead. I was initially put off by the thought of reading about hospice, but it is not so much about death as it is about life. It is warm, funny, and, yes, sad too. You will cry (as my wife and I did) but you will also laugh and feel warm to read how these incredible pets did so much to smooth the hospice patients last weeks. I have lent this book to my friends and they all are raving about it.

This is a fantastic book. At first, I was reluctant. I thought that it would be very sad. It is heartwarming. Michele brings you into the story as though you were there. It is very well written. It demonstrates the true healing powers of our beloved companions. Don't miss reading this book!

Do not buy this book unless you are totally clueless about even how to turn a computer on. It wasn't what I thought it would be. Many of the web sites listed are no longer on the web and it is outdated. Most of the stuff in here you probably already know if you have spent any time on the internet. I could have written this book and done a better job. There is no real knowledge to gain from this book unless you have been living in a cave and you don't know what a computer is.

I found this book very disappointing, and the title is misleading. I thought I was going to learn all about collecting online and finding, buying and selling collectibles and antiques. Instead, there is detailed blow by blow descriptions about computers, how to choose internet providers, internet language, etc. There are nice pictures of antiques and collectibles, but they don't pertain to the author's discussions, and I felt they were used as fillers and fluff just to get enough pages in the book. This book would be good for the complete novice who has NEVER touched a computer or the Internet.

Advanced users might already know most of what is in this book, but for "newbies" like myself it is wonderful. It gave me the confidence I needed to start using online auctions, and I've found some nice Christmas gifts at good prices.

I got the impression that the idea for this book came together too fast and it went out on the market not well researched enough. Instead of all the technical information, tell me where to go on the web to find collectibles. When I saw the title I had high hopes but it told me what I already know. The pictures were nice but low-quality resolution and really didn't add much to collecting online. Too costly for what it offers.

Solo: To Fly - To Climb.......2003-02-23

This is an outstanding autobiography of a man who climbed to top of everything he ever set out to do. It's a great success story and a real piece of Americana. Bob Norris has a gift of verse that makes this an enjoyable read. I felt as if I was right there with him as he traveled through life and a part of aviation that nobody has really written about. Someone ought to make a movie out of this! Jimmy Stewart would have loved the script.

I am just beginning my hobby with a metal detector. I purchased several books on treasure hunting and this is by far the best. It has a broad range of extremely useful information. By all means start with this book if you too are a beginner. Most of the other books I bought had a lot of fluff. This book has a ton of useful information and guidance.

This book is an invaluable resource for the beginner and even the intermediate detectorist. It has filled me with new ideas of where and how to search for lost valuables and coins. The tidbits on history and archeology were most interesting.

I read this book from cover to cover and highly recommend it to anyone new to the hobby of treasure hunting and metal detecting. Chaplan knows his subject well and covers everything from how to get started to what to look out for while hunting and what to do with the objects that one finds.

The author leave no stone (or dirt!) unturned in the process. An excellent, all-around resource on the topic.

This book is not what you would think of as a biography. If you want to find out about Giulietta the woman, you will not find much here. If you want to read the critics' reviews from every performance, then this is the book for you. There is an occasional bit about something interesting that happened to her, but not much. The tribute chapter tells more about her than the bulk of the work, and the cd is definitely worth the price of the book!
I hope that one day the Bastianini book is translated into English and becomes available in the USA. What little I've read of it shows it to be more what I personally like in a biography.

more tribute than biography.......2002-03-14

First of all, I've read other "Great Voices" biographies and they do not
pretend to be very scholarly, or delve very deeply into the personal lives
of the singers. They are less 'biographies' than 'loving tributes'. There
are some great pictures, loving reminisces, glowing accounts of illustrius
careers, and only the briefest sketches of personal life. Pesky things like
vocal decline, feuds, scandals, and other unpleasantries are for the most part
ignored and mentioned only obliquely. Simionato's biography is on its own
terms rather charming. There are great reminisces and tributes by lots and
lots of colleagues, wonderful pictures (i was shocked by just how large her
repertoire was), and some good reviews. There's a full chronology of her
career. Predictably, her bitter rival Fedora Barbieri is never mentioned,
and nothing is mentioned of her vocal decline. We are led to believe the
only reason she retired was because of her marriage. Listening to
Simionato's recordings at that time I hear a large hole developing in the
middle of her voice, and she often sounded raspy and colorless. Her top was
as brilliant as ever. The author also gives us the impression that every man
who ever met Giulietta fell madly in love with her -- her three marriages
are mentioned in a sort of vague, sentimental way. One of the more
interesting aspects of Giulietta's life is never delved into very deeply:
her childhood. Seems she had an abusive mom. But maybe the diva simply did
not wish for such things to be mentioned in great detail.
Overall this is a nice sentimental tribute to one of my favorite singers.
But it often felt like a cupcake, with the slightly hollow aftertaste --
there's very little sense of who Giulietta really is.

An excellent study .......2005-02-06

In this work Mollov clearly outlines the basis of Morgenthau's political philosophy. He shows how elements in this are strongly connected both with Morgenthau's experience as a German Jew who witnessed the rise of Nazism, and his understanding of the Biblical prophetic tradition. For Morgenthau the speaking of ' truth to power' was an ideal moral element which could somehow transform the harsh world of power politics he understood so well into a possibly more humane place.
Mollov tells Morgenthau's story well, including his actions in supporting the emigration of Soviet Jewry, and his controversial and unexpected opposition to the Vietnamese war.
