Excellent choice!!.......2007-09-12

Once again the author has put together a fantastic tour book that contains all of the highlights of the area in one easy to follow guide. I own several of this series and have not been disapointed in any of them. Very well written, accurate and complete. I have been studying the Shenandoah Valley history for about 18 months. This books is a detailed summary of all that I have been able to find in that time. I wish it would have been available when I started my research, it would have saved me much time!

A wonderful guidebook.......2005-06-28

We just returned from a driving trip through the Shenandoah Valley. Picked up this guidebook in New York City before we left. It was perfect. All the recommendations for things to see and restaurants were just as described. Driving directions were also good. Based on the author's recommendation, we decided to stay at the Long Hill Bed and Breakfast in Winchester, VA and it turned out to be the highlight of our trip. A very worthwhile travel guide.

This book was funny, interesting, and very readable. I'm living in Thailand right now, and loved her descriptions. I want to add a cautionary note for those who have "ever given thought to the possibility of having a simian for a pet" as one reviewer put it. Baby gibbons are still sold as pets here. The only way they can be obtained is to shoot down a mother in the wild, and hope the baby lives. The author is definitely an animal lover, and undoubtedly meant no harm in buying a couple of cute additions to the family zoo. However, what we now know about their procurement should outrage anyone who truly cares about animals.

Don't miss this sensational book about two small apes (if you want to be really irritating, you can refer to them as monkeys), who came to live with the author, her husband, their children, their two dogs, two guinea pigs, two mongooses, cat and crane (they were also offered a baby elephant, which they refused--God knows why!) in Banbkok. It's a great, great book because it's beautifully written, poignant, and sidesplitting--offering, along the way, wonderful descriptions of things you might never have thought about, such as automobile air conditioning in the l950s. Imagine Dr. Doolittle meeting the von Trapp family if the Von Trapp family hadn't been such a bunch of humorless saps. The book also includes photos, including some of the author, who looks much like M.F.K. Fisher in the great Man Ray photo.

i really enjoyed this book it is funny and sweet. a great book to read on holiday as its short and you dont have to read it in any particular order. im going to thailand next year and it has really wet my apitite definately worth buying. i think the people that would like this are probably 18 and up, boys and girls.

This is a worst book I have ever read. It is clear that the book has been through any proof reading process. The language use is informal and the book has lots of typo errors and grammatical errors. The table of contents doesn't align with the topics in each chapter. Bad, bad book. I will return the book and ask the refund.

Old pocket watches explained.......2002-08-14

The focus is on antique European pocket watches, especially British ones, this being a British publication. The technical history of watches is thoroughly covered, the various outdated watch mechanisms--verge, fusee, cylinder escapement--are explained, and interesting footnotes are included, like the wage records from a 19th century watch shop. A chapter on repair will get you started, and even tell you how to restore the blueing on the watch hands (heat them in a tray over an alcohol lamp). The author has spent much of his life studying and collecting old watches, and has produced an easy-to-read guide filled with interesting and useful information.

If you are a "newbie" in the world of watch collecting, this is the right book for you. It focuses the watch evolution from the late 16TH century to the modern quartz watch. It has a lot of graphics and black and white pocket watch pictures...The book, however, is, in my point of view, intended for a quick knowledge of the watch's history and mechanics...It doesn't cover, for instance, the modern automatic wristwatch. I think that's the best book to read before trying something more techicall. The reading is very straight forward, but the experts in the field will find the book very summarized.

This is the book to get. I used to watch Joe on the PBS series, and let me tell you that the "spit coat of shellac" is the trade secret that makes all the difference. This book is truley instrunctional and fun to read.

Most informative and comprehensive .......2005-10-01

This is the first book I've purchased on finishing. I found it to be extremely informative and well written. I have watched the author previously on TV as one of the "Furniture Guys". He injects just enough humor to not detract from the subject, and he puts a lot of emphasis on safety which can be critical with not only finishing but all woodworking.

I am so happy to find a new copy of this old friend.......2006-11-20

I have a 20-year-old softbound copy of this cookbook that is in tatters, so I am very happy finally to find a fresh copy. I have made many of the recipes in this book and my family has a couple of all-time favorites, especially the pork with green beans and the vegetarian lasagne. While the basic recipes are wonderful, I frequently find them to be bland. My cookbook is filled with margin notes about what herbs and spices I have tried over the years to enhance the recipes. Nonetheless, this is a treasured part of my cookbook library.

Great recipes and resources.......2006-10-09

The first part of the book is lots of info about nutrition and so on, very interesting and informative (like talking about how potatoes have gotten a bum rap, there really healthy, she mentions one guy who lived healthily for 300 days on nothing but potatoes (and a little margarin). The second part is a few hundred recipes, which are great - easy, delicious, pretty fast, a lot of them with ingredients we keep around the house. Some of our favorites - the chili recipes, the spaghetti pancakes, multigrain pancakes (good with soy flour and blueberries), etc. This (along with books from Moosewood, Tara Duggan, and the Quick Vegetarian Pleasures book) is one of primary cookbooks; we use it all the time. Highly recommended.

Great cookbook which has withstood the test of time........2006-05-03

I bought this cookbook back around 1992 and the tattered paperback is the most used cookbook in my kitchen.

I live with a vegetarian, so most of what I've cooked has been the meatless recipes, and without exception, they have all been wonderful! Some of these recipes are also my potluck dinner staples (esp the Tri-Color Chickpea Salad). The Quick Lasanga with Bean Sauce has been the hit of every party I've taken it to, and the Lentil soup is to die for.

At one point, I went through a heavy-duty baking phase, and tried many of the muffin and quick bread recipes in this book. Again, there wasn't a dud in the bunch - everything I baked was excellent and won praise from all who partook.

Most of the recipes in this book are very good "as is" (they don't need much futzing with). There is some prep work involved (lots of chopping of veggies and the like), so many of the recipes do take some time. Almost half of the book consists of information about food, nutrition, cooking hints and techniques, which I've found to be very useful. Personally, if you have to have one main cookbook, I'd say that this should be it!

Putting "high carbohydrate" in the title is a no-no these days with the lo-carb craze that's going on, but I'm here to tell everyone that this is a great cookbook full of healthy recipes. Brody focuses on recipes that are often low-calorie and almost always include lots of veggies and other complex carbs, and she has many delicious desserts that aren't overloaded on fat and sugar. True weight management comes with exercise and watching overall calorie intake, while ensuring a majority of those calories are healthy ones. This cookbook is perfect for anyone who's interested in increasing his/her repertoire of delicious, healthy recipes.

Stands the Test of Time.......2006-01-24

I have owned this cookbook for about 15 years, and have since compiled an extensive cookbook collection of several hundred volumes. I still use this book, and have never met anyone who didn't love the turkey burgers; the garlicky green beans and braised red cabbage are also excellent. It contains many delicious recipes that are also healthy but are still satisfying and tasty. An excellent all-around cookbook that is meant for a home cook, not a professional chef. I am replacing my well-worn paperback version today.

the title says it all.four deacdes of commentary.how many artists of today will get 4 years let alone 40? there was only one miles davis.who used his music wisely and took risks.now this book has commentary favorable&negative about his vast body of work.very interesting feelings from both perspectives.i believe all artists deserve this kind of feedback if they earn it.and believe me very few will ever get to miles davis's level.must have book.
