Not what I expected as an independent traveler.......2007-01-17

This book has some excellent general information on traveling to and around London and includes several interesting walking tours, but I already have several tour guides containing this same information. I was looking for a book geared specifically to someone traveling alone - hotels that are safe and welcoming to the single traveler (particularly the single female tourist), restaurants where single patrons would not feel out of place, etc. I have been to London twice before as a single traveler and hoped that this book would enhance my next experience in that city. Although the book had very good over-all information for anyone visiting London, it had little to do with traveling independently. As a general London travel book I could have given it a higher rating, but had to settle for three stars as it did not help me any more than any other London travel book as far as advice for the single independent traveler.

Fantastic Guide to London.......2006-05-08

I was absolutely delighted when this new, fifth edition, of London for the Independent Traveler was published. My old edition was getting worn out! The author provides the practical advice you will need to get to London. Excellent information that prepares you for the really outstanding part of this book, the 14 suggested three-day walking itineraries. These are broken into chronological, geographic and special interest tours, i.e., basic London, art lover's, royal, shopper's London and one of the author's favorite three days. Each daily itinerary comes complete with map, schedule, admission information for the sites, and suggestions for lunch, dinner and evening entertainment. In addition, you have the flexibility of choosing a combination of days from different tours, i.e., one basic, one literary and one shopper's to design your own special three days of exploring London at your own pace. A great guide for planning a grand trip to London!

Plantsman and naturalist Scott Ogden writes in loving depth about Southern gardens, including the flora (and sometimes fauna) that inhabits the hills of central Texas where he makes his home. In The Moonlit Garden, Ogden focuses on the flowers of the night, their presence, their perfumes, and their pollinators. He invites us into the night garden, where luminous flowers gleam by star or moonlight. An early section introduces the underlying concepts that affect garden design--particularly the placement of paths, seats, and architectural structures--when our object is nocturnal enjoyment. Ogden begins in the garden, but soon branches out into a range of settings: desert and prairie, tropical and temperate forests, mountain meadow, pond and riverside. He introduces a host of night-blooming plants from each habitat, emphasizing those suitable for garden placement. Though his garden is in USDA zone 8, many of his selections travel well, and could be grown almost anywhere. A final section discusses garden illumination; not surprisingly, Ogden favors the eerie glow of the limestone tai-hu rocks beloved of Chinese gardeners. It's a great book with a lot of moonlore and he divides the book into chapters according to the type of area you live in: A Moonlit Border (for small moon gardens) The Forest Moon The Prairie Moon The Tropic Moon The Water Moon The Desert Moon The Mountain Moon

There's also a chapter on Winter Gragrances and Limestone and Other Illuminations

He suggests plants for each area that bloom at night.

I fully enjoyed the flowing writing style of the writer. The stories, specially, Saayeha, is one of the best short stories I have read in the past few years. I look forward to other stories by Kooshan.

imaginative and snappy writing of short stories in Persian.......1999-03-12

When I started to read Moonlit Garden by Kamshad Kooshan, I was expecting a morbid and convoluted series of stories, that is so predominant in the Iranian writers living outside of Iran. To my surprise, these stories provoked a part of my mind which thinks in Persian and was hungry for imaginative and exhilirating story telling. To his credit, Mr. Kooshan has captured a rythum in his stories that is quite in line with us living in the west.

I have been thinking about myself and other Americans of Iranian descent who live in the States and how as we stay here longer, we become more and more distance from the lyrical Persian Language. I yearn for something that is new, both in style and in form, and the issues and ideas it revolves around. The first story, a picture in the corner of the mirror is a marvel about the hectic lives we all live and how we deal with identity, as men and women, but more importantly as human beings.

The most important story of the collection, in my opinion is Shadows which is parallel stories of two families, one man is confronted with his wife in Coma and a younger man is heading on an unreturnable journey. Through love, though the chips fall where they should.

I strongly recommend this book for both its subjects and for its great writing.

You know the work of I.M Pei even if you don't know that he was the architect behind them. You have seen the glass Pyramid at the Lourvre (although there was much more to his design than that visible and memorable landmark), the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the East Wing of the National Gallery in Washington D. C. , the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library, Hancock Place in Boston, the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong and many others.

Like a great many important architects, he caused strenuous debate, derisive rejection by some, loud praise from others. Many link him as a disciple of Walter Gropious and others reject the very idea that such an original thinker would be derivative of another.

This very fine book will help you understand more about his work, how the projects were selected, the requirements and desires behind the designs, and what the vision was that resulted in all those buildings with the sharp geometric lines. The man himself is also quite interesting. The firm he founded continues (though he retired from it in 1990), however, in an interview in 2004 he said that he stopped taking new projects in 2001. He was born in 1917, so he has had a very active and long career.

If you think you hate his work, I encourage you to step back and read this book. It will help you better understand his designs. They do make a great deal of sense and I think they are beautiful. Certainly, while they still challenge some, they do seem less outrageous compared to the designs one sees going up around the world today.

A Wonderful Tale.......2000-04-04

A brilliant and well-thought out look at one of this centuries most prolific architects. All of the stories behind his greatest achievements are here, including the scandal the erupted around the building of the Louvre pyramid. Pei is shown to be an practical innovator with his own particular philosophy; his elegant lines and deceptively simple ideas set him apart from the complicated ideology of the Bauhaus movement and architects like Le Corbusier. A very good read.
