Book Description
There is increased interest in growing willow and poplar trees, as fast-growing species that have several purposes, including use as biofuels for energy production. However, silviculture is constrained by diseases such as MelampsoraA rusts, which have ben extensively studied over the past two decades. As a result, they are now one of the best-understood tree pathogens in terms of population biology, genetics of resistance and disease control using host-genotype mixtures. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive review of our knowledge of rust diseases of willow and poplar.

I really like the feel of this book. I'm getting ready for a 4-country trip to Scandinavia and this guide looks to be a major source of information to use our limited time effectively. I certainly recommend it...

Customer Reviews:
It helped me train my min pin (minature Pincher).......2001-06-21
This book is great. It told me everything that I was doing wrong when I was training my min pin. It did'nt even hhousebreak yet because of this book. I got it trained in a day!
Outstanding Reference Book.......2001-03-24
This is a profound, one-and-done reference for a new dog person, whether he or she is rescuing an adult, adopting a puppy or dogsitting for a friend. Without qualification, I think it should replace a book with monks as a primary reference tool. Experienced dog guardians will also enjoy this as a refresher or for a new way of looking at conventional training methods.
... good, effective book on basic trouble shooting ..........2001-03-19
The author draws on her own experience with 2 poodles ... as well, as the training & trouble solving methods of other trainers ... this approach alone makes the book rather unusual and refreshing ... too many writers believe that theirs is the best or only way ...
Contains sound sensible advice, adopts gentle training methods ... with interesting chapters on dog nutrition and medication/inoculations that take an alternative (holistic?) approach ... worth considering ...
Oh ... and don't let the number `25' fool you ... the author covers almost all the issues commonly faced by dog owners everywhere ...
This book is very clearly written, well organinsed and makes for easy reading ... useful for all dog owners ... very good for first time dog owners ...
25 Stupid Mistakes Dog Owners Make.......2000-12-29
Anyone who may ever encounter a dog should read this book. Everyone should. Janine Adams brings up issues often ignored by many first-time dog owners, and reminds long-time dog owners that there are many ways to handle dogs and their problems, some more effective than others, and some more radical than others. Ms. Adams' writing is refreshingly clear and open, and she touches on just about all the issues from housebreaking and puppyhood to letting go in the end, and everything in-between. This is an easy-to-read book that can serve as simple reference for everyone. You can read it straight through, or in a few sittings, or you can refer to a chapter at a time as you see fit. You should read this book. Your dog will thank you. Everyone should read this book, it's really that good!
25 Stupid Mistakes Dog Owners Make.......2000-11-16
Janine Adams talent is that she can make her books relevant to everyman. This book isn't for trainers, or for breeders, or people with pedigreed dogs - but for the ordinary dog lover. Anyone who wants a dog to share their life should pick up this book and read it cover to cover. If you already have a dog - what are you waiting for?? Get this book - it's a great Christmas gift!

BIG Disappointment.......2002-03-01
While the size and scope of this book is impressive, the quality of the prints is poor, at least in comparison with the wonderful prints found in the book "Botanical Prints From the Hortus Eystettensis" I purchased the Besler Florilegium expecting to find prints of the same caliber but they lack the detail and antique look of the prints found in the Hortus Eystettensis.
If I had a do-over button, I wouldn't purchase this book.
Excelent gift for Besler print owners.......2002-01-01
I purchased this book as a gift for someone who owns a Besler print. In fact, they own the print that is on the cover of this book. The large thick book is a very lovely display of Besler's famous prints, organized by the seasons in which the plants he observed in the garden grew. It would make a good gift to anyone, especially gardeners with large empty coffee tables.
Fantastic.......1998-06-12
It's not a book, it's an event. Well worth the purchase price!

Book Description
The development of Early Christian rituals in connection with death and burial has so far not sufficiently been explored. Volp's study focuses on the surviving literary sourcesboth pagan and Christian, together with inscriptions and other archaeological remains while taking into account recent results from science and humanities. A summary of death and ritual in the ancient Mediterranean religions is followed by detailed analyses of the Christian sources from the 2nd to the 5th century. Thus, basic developments are being discovered which led to and accompanied the forming of Christian rituals, such as ritual purity or the social structure of family and society. Being the first such interdisciplinary approach, it also represents the first monographic work on the topic since 1941.

Book Description
"I have just seen McCall's and so has Jack and we are so happy... They are the only pictures I've ever seen of me where I don't look like something out of a horror movie. If I'd realized what a wonderful photographer you were... I never would have been the jittery subject I was. Poor Orlando! Remember I wouldn't even eat a Good Humor. I was so lens-shy."--Jacqueline Kennedy, in a letter to Orlando Suero
In January 1954, the handsome junior senator from Massachusetts and his glamorous wife moved into a three-story townhouse at 3321 Dent Place in Georgetown. Although they would live here for only five months, the house was their first home after their wedding-- the society event of the decade--and a place from which they could begin to prepare for the next step in their lives, one that would take John and Jacqueline Kennedy to the White House. In May of that year, Orlando Suero, a photographer with the Three Lions Picture Agency on his first major assignment, spent five days with the Kennedys. He enjoyed their full cooperation and the intimate access that would later, as Jacqueline became more anxious about her family's privacy, be denied to all but a few.
In more than twenty photo sessions, Suero documented a typical week in the young couple's life: Jack at his Senate office, catching up on work at home, and painting in the back garden; Jackie attending classes at Georgetown, gardening, and preparing for an evening of dinner and dancing; and the couple reading the morning papers around the breakfast table, looking through their wedding photos, hosting both casual and formal dinner parties, and tossing the football around with neighbors Bobby and Ethel Kennedy.
Suero's photographs capture the idyllic quality of the young couple's lives during their months in Georgetown. Not yet hounded by the media, John and Jacqueline in these images seem happier and more at ease than they would ever be again. Surprisingly, no magazine ever published Suero's complete photo essay. McCall's ran a few of his photographs that fall, but most of them have not been seen until now. In 1989, Three Lions Picture Agency owner Max Lowenherz donated the photographs to the Johns Hopkins University's Peabody Institute. For Camelot at Dawn, the Peabody Institute's Anne Garside has selected nearly one hundred of the most evocative and affecting pictures Suero took during his week in Georgetown. This remarkable document of John and Jacqueline Kennedy's first year of marriage recalls the romance and the promise embodied by their life together in America's last age of innocence.
Customer Reviews:
Camelot at Dawn: Jacqueline and John Kennedy in Georgetown, May 1954.......2007-03-09
It is hard to believe that there was a time when you could have passed Jack or Jackie on the street and not known them. This book has made them into "real people". I really enjoyed reading it.
A sweet and special trip back in time.......2007-01-31
To borrow from the movie HELP!, "Here's how they was before they was." Unguarded and completely charming photos of newlyweds, before international fame overtook them and they perfected their public faces. As one who has read extensively about the Kennedys, I am always happy to find books that can still show me something I haven't seen before. This book does that, and I enjoyed it and recommend it.
A typical week in the young couple's life .......2005-06-07
Camelot At Dawn: Jacqueline & John Kennedy In Georgetown, May 1954 is the collaborative work of photographer Orlando Suero and author Anne Garside. As his first major photography assignment, Suero spent five days with the Kennedys in May of 1954. He enjoyed their full cooperation and the intimate access that produced more than twenty photo sessions as Suero documented a typical week in the young couple's life including Jack at his Senate office, Jackie attending classes at Georgetown, and the couple playing touch football in the park. Camelot At Dawn is a "must" for all of those whose lives and imaginations where touched by one of America's most idealized couples before tragedy would shattered both their personal lives and those all too brief days of an American "Camelot" for the rest of us.
Photographs that today are stunning in their meaning.......2003-09-03
As someone who grew up in the Kennedy era, these images had a profound effect on me. They are images that shortly after they were made, could never have been made again. Can you imagine seeing Jack and Jackie Kennedy strolling alone down the streets of Georgetown (in DC), her wearing shorts and him wearing sneakers and a plain t-shirt? Or playing football in a public park with absolutely NO gawkers hanging around? The great impact of these pictures comes from their innocence and irony, because of what came after and what we now know. If you remember the Kennedy era, you might stare at some of the images in this book for many minutes in wonder, about the people in the picture, about yourself, and about how we were then and are now. I gave this book to my brother-in-law--a recognized expert on the Kennedy assination--and he said he almost cried. It's that good.
in the crowd of Kennedy books published, this is a STANDOUT!.......2001-11-26
Can the Kennedys ever have a bad photograph taken of them? It is appears not, as this book illustrates. CAMELOT AT DAWN is kind of an artsy photojournalism feast for the eyes, and although at first glance the text will seem to have general information that we all know about, it too is a treat.
Orlando Suero had his first big assignment taking pictures of Jacqueline Kennedy for McCall's magazine for an article. It would turn out that most of his shots would not be used because the press felt that the Kennedys had been overexposed in the media due to their wedding--so it is only now in this book that most of the pictures taken for that assignment have been published.
Suero says that JFK manages to sneek himself into most pictures, and so the final result became as much as about him as Jackie...but we also see the Bobby Kennedys as well as the former President Trumans.
Some of these pictures have been published in other books, so not all of them are seen here for the first time, but seeing them within the context that they were shot makes the photos that have been seen before all the more interesting. However, it is only a few--most of these are just being seen for the first time.
As for the text, some of it is "well duh" text because it is known by everybody:"Jackie was a silver-and-Sevres kind of girl, whereas Jack was a milkshake-and-hamburger kind of guy." (I am not cutting on Anne Garside's writing--because the book is actually quite good, I am just trying to point out that some of the information that she writes everyone knows in their sleep...as that is how famous Jack and Jackie have become.) Now don't take this sentence of Garside's alone--you have to read the whole book before you dare judge her writing, and in my estimation she has succeded in the overall scheme in making two well known sujects seem like new again. How does she do this?
For example, there is information about the renting of Dent Place--where these photographs are taken as well the Kennedys first home--which is interesting because we get to see excerpts from Jackie's letters to the Childs (the people who the Kennedys were renting the house from.)
Also information about Evelyn Lincoln's calender is given as to what the Kennedy's were doing the week the photos were taken, as well as little details spread out throughout the text that make the book an interesting read.
I believe that this is a standout book published on the Kennedys. It is informative and orginal in text, and the pictures easily give Lowe, Avedon, and Shaw a run for their money. You can and will enjoy this book if you give it a chance--don't get stuck on the information about the JFKs that we all know or the pictures that we have all seen--read the entire book and appreciate the entire book!
Book Description
From the jungles of Vietnam, where he shot a photo of "the loneliness and desolation of war" that won a Pulitzer Prize, to the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton, David Hume Kennerly witnessed and photographed most of the history-making moments of the last third of the twentieth century. As the millennium turned and he set out to cover his eighth presidential campaign, however, the veteran photojournalist sensed something missing. In his words, "I had the uneasy feeling that I couldn't focus only on the story at hand while bypassing the texture of life that surrounds it.... This time I wouldn't speed across that covered bridge to get to the big event on the other side, but instead I would slow down a bit, maybe even pause to take a picture of the bridge."
Photo du Jour is Kennerly's visual diary of "the texture of life" at the start of the twenty-first century. As he traveled more than a quarter of a million miles across thirty-eight states and seven countries, Kennerly took a picture every single day in the year 2000, using just one camera and one lens. Some offer candid, behind-the-scenes glimpses of the men who would be presidentJohn McCain, Al Gore, and George W. Bush. Most of the photographs, though, seek to capture not the big, historic moments but rather the ordinary, even whimsical moments when the essence of a person or a place reveals itself to the observer who takes the time and has the heart to really see. Travel with him from Beijing to Boston, Moose to Miami, and Whynot to Weimea in
Photo du Jour, and you'll quickly discover that David Kennerly is just such an observer.
Customer Reviews:
Photo edit of the day.......2007-02-17
Maybe my expectations are over the top, maybe I know more than the average joe/jane when it comes to photography, or maybe I just got the whole idea of this book wrong. Whatever the reason, David Hume Kennerly's Photo du Jour is nothing more than a document of his time and access throughout 2000. For some reason, I got the idea in my head that here was a photojournalist going to lug around an extra Leica and only shoot one image a day with it. How would he choose and at 11:59PM would there be regrets over the shot passed up for the possibility of another later in the day that never presented its self? I really wanted this guy to only have ten rolls of 135-36 for the project- I wanted this to be the photo equivalent to Zen in the Art of Archery. I obviously got it wrong. Another thing that gets me about this book is how it is promoted ie. Rosenthal saying "one camera and one lens". Again, all of the conceptual limitations on this project that never materialized! If you are shooting a 21mm on an M body, setting the hyper focal distance around 5ft. and using f8 you are basically good from 2ft to infinity. Fine, understandable and I love wide angles on 35mm format but then you go a crop the image!!!!! This is my biggest jab at the book, if you are going to say one camera, one lens be photographer enough to print the FULL FRAME! I guess if you spend you life getting paid to "get the shot", you learn to shoot it close and wide and then crop what you want later. Some images in this book look like 6x7, some 135-36, and some 6x9 or even a Panavision 16:9 so again, where is the skill/discipline? The fishing equivalent would be using dynamite. The book is what it is and unfortunately is billed as something else. Howard Fineman states in the introduction that this book shows Kennerly in an "uncharacteristic mode" and says this puts him "effortlessly" in league with the likes of Evans, Smith, and Robert Frank...........Please don't insult my intelligence or these photographers. The sophomoric juxtaposition on pages 142-143 is a Photo 1 shark jump that sounded like "badap bumb". Maybe all the text and praise from a Winogrand, Cartier-Bresson, or a Davidson book got mixed up with the images in this one. More hype than hypo. With all that said, the book is beautifully bound a put together. The reproductions are clear, well printed and maintain an elegance and crispness that is not out there in many books today. If you are interested in a slice of time kind of document and are just plain addicted to looking at images, then you should be happy with this book. If you are at all knowledgeable of the work of Winogrand, Cartier-Bresson, Davidson, Friedlander (there is a lame rip off on Like a One-Eyed Cat in du Jour page 156) or even Eggleston in a color version, you may be disappointed in the cost/benefit analysis as I was. I can't remember his exact words but Duane Michals said it best- (paraphrasing)- many photographers shoot hundreds of shots hoping, amidst all of the confusion, to come up with an interesting image...but the difference between the artist and the photographer, is a sense of control. I will keep this book, shelve it with a ton of Magnum issues, and I am sure pull it down once a year or so and flip though it because that's what I do. This could have been brilliant both conceptually and perceptually but end the end, just another guy with a camera and access.
Exquisite.......2002-11-24
This book is a must have. At the Texas Book Festival (2002) this book caught my eye. Never heard of the photographer before but the book was exquisite: filled with stunning black and white pictures. Pictures of everyday things. Of people laughing, of streets and events - capturing the magic moments without a pose. It was a simple concept: One camera. One lens. One year. The results are photos that also capture the routine, sometimes humorous and often extraordinary moments of everyday life.
Book Description
Although America entered the war relatively late, it played a critical role in tipping the scales against Germany and its allies and in shaping the war’s aftermath. The book’s hundreds of photos tell the stories of the U.S. soldiers, sailors, airmen, politicians, and citizens on the home front who helped the Allies win the war. Donald Goldstein and Harry Maihafer have produced a vivid account of the war that forever altered the destinies of America and Europe.
Customer Reviews:
small photos, poorly printed.......2006-08-31
while flipping through this book i kept getting this eerie three-ring binder feeling. something about this book feels cheesy and self-published, and its not just the chapter heading fonts. for one, being that this book is supposed to be about the photographs as well as the sory, i found the paper unsuitable for printing photos. as well, though there are quite a number, they are all small and poorly printed.
Magnificant Collection of Photographs.......2005-09-02
This book is a magnificant collection of photographs. There is just enough writing to explain what the photographs show. Combined they make a pretty good history of the United States involvement in World War I.
While the American involvement in that was was much later and much smaller than that of their allies, they came at a critical time. The British, French and German armies had bled each other nearly to death. All of a sudden the arrival of a million Americans with more on the way tipped the balance.
There is also a suggestion that the tactics used by the Americans had been upgraded from the march in formation tactics used in the early days to more of a 'fire and maneuver' tactic that is much more suited to attacks in the days of machine guns. I do not know if this was an American invention, or if the other allied armies had learned this as well by this time in the war.
The key though to this book is the pictures. I can remember trying to find pictures of World War I some years back and had great difficulty. Here all of a sudden here they are.

Book Description
When the Chicago Daily News closed its doors in March 1978 after over a century of publication, the city mourned the loss of an American original. The Daily News boasted the inventive, aggressive writing of such luminaries as Carl Sandburg and Ben Hecht. It was also one of the first newspapers in the country to feature black-and-white photography. In 1900, staffers from the paper’s art department began lugging bulky cameras, heavy glass plates, and explosive flash powder throughout the city. A labor strike, a boxing match, or a crime scene—it was all in a day’s work for the Daily News photographer.
These cameramen helped sell papers, but, as Mark Jacob and Richard Cahan reveal, they also made art. Chicago under Glass: Early Photographs from the Chicago Daily News is the first collection of images from the photo staff’s early years, 1901 to 1930. Jacob and Cahan, seasoned journalists themselves, have selected more than 250 images—many of which have never before been published—from the nearly 57,000 glass negatives housed at the Chicago History Museum. They include rare photographs of a young Buster Keaton with his wife and child, waiting to board a train and the notorious Al Capone outside a courtroom, smoking a cigar and consulting with his lawyer. Each thematic section begins with a fascinating introduction by the authors, and each image is accompanied by insightful historical commentary.
These fragile glass records are a remarkable piece of American history. Together, they capture a time of massive change and stark contrasts, the defining years in a place Nelson Algren called “Hustlertown.” From candid shots of the Eastland steamer disaster to the glittering electric lights of the White City amusement park and the grim aftermath of the Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre, the history these images reveal is not simply the story of Chicago, but the history of the modern American city.
