If you are a high end traveler, this guide is for you.......2007-04-04
Well written, funny and sarcastic. This is a great guide for the non-touristy, off beat sites to see in Beijing. Tends to be higher end venues so if you are a budget traveler, look elsewhere

Book Description
Eva lives in an Inuit village in northern Canada. In the winter, people search along the bottom of the seabed beneath a thick shelf of ice for mussels to eat. Eva usually helps her mother, but for the first time, she’s going to go by herself. She soon gathers a pan full of mussels. But then, her candle goes out, and the tide threatens to return! When she is finally safe with her mother, Eva proclaims, “That was my very last first time walking alone on the bottom of the sea.” An ALA Notable Children’s Book, Very Last First Time comes from one of Canada's most distinguished storytellers and an award-winning illustrator.
Customer Reviews:
A Fascinating Story that I found through Five In a Row.......2005-11-10
My children (1st & 2nd grade) really love this book. The premise had them leaping off the bed in amazement - "She goes under the SEA??? The ice is over her HEAD???? She goes by HERSELF????"
Every detail was interesting to them - the tools used to hack under the ice, the mother letting her child go alone, the small Inuit homes, Eva living in a land where no trees grew - and they had so many questions - most of which were answered by the end of the story.
We used the book to talk about:
1. mussels and how they grow & live,
2. tides, what causes them and how much the water level can vary between high tide and low tide,
3. the climate in northern Canada
4. the Inuits,
5. emergencies - what happens initially to our bodies when we are afraid, and what we should try to do so that we can get out of our emergency safely, and
6. pointillism and the artist Seraut, and we made our own pointillism art masterpieces with Q-tips and paint.
I did search the Internet for actual photographs of what Eva might have seen, but I couldn't find a single one! I couldn't find other references to the Inuit walking under the ice either. I would have loved to have shown those to my children.
Educational and enjoyable.......2004-01-21
It has been said that a good children's book is a good read for people of any age. This book is another example of the truth of that statement. It teaches people who don't live in the northern tundra on the seashore about what their life is like, and it does so in a way that you enjoy the learning.
My five year old son loved it; we read it over again a number of times. But the reason I knew it was such a good book was that I didn't dread reading it after several times. In fact, I looked forward to it.
Beneath the Ice............2003-05-05
"Eva Padlyat lived in a village on Ungava Bay in northern Canada. She was Inuit, and ever since she could remember she had walked with her mother on the bottom of the sea. It was something the people of her village did in winter when they wanted mussels to eat. Today, something very special was going to happen. Today, for the very first time in her life, Eva would walk on the bottom of the sea alone..." So begins Jan Andrews' tale of a young girl's first trip alone through the thick winter ice. In painstaking and intriguing detail she describes Eva's adventure; cutting a hole in the ice at low tide, descending to the dark ocean floor below, lighting candles to illuminate the sea bed, collecting mussels, and exploring this beautiful hidden world..... Ms Andrews' engaging tale, filled with history, mystery, drama, and suspense captures the imagination, and is rich in imagery and magic. Illustrator, Ian Wallace's quiet, dreamy artwork, in soft, textured tones, pulls the reader beneath the ice and right into the story. Perfect for youngsters 5-9, Very Last First Time is a fascinating and evocative experience that shouldn't be missed, and works well as part of a unit introducing the Inuit culture and way of life, or as a stand-alone for story time.
Amazing Time.......2000-09-08
The possibility of gathering mussels under the ice at low tide was absolutely amazing to me. I had never heard of such a thing or imagined it. What a wonderful world we live in! Andrews writes of young Eva's solo walk on the bottom of the sea and she does an intriguing job of it.
The illustrator,Wallace, enriches and expands the written story through his detailed pictures of the village and native life on Ungava Bay.
I hope Andrews & Wallace collaborate again and soon!
Wonderful - a genuine adventure for young girls........1999-07-26
This is one of the best books for young girls that I have come across. A young Inuit girl is sent under the ice at low tide to collect muscles for the family.. this time by herself. She gets distracted, the candles burn out leaving her in darkness just as she starts to hear the water returning. What an adventure. I buy this book as a gift whenever I need a present for a beginner reader girl.

effective portrayl of foreigners but one dimensional.......2000-05-30
The Abduction, by Mette Newth is one of those enigmatic, strangely intriguing books. Almost. The book is told by two different people: Osuqo, an Indian girl in third person, and Christine a white girl in first person. The author's portrayl of Osuqo as a confused, hurt, and virginal girl, and his telling of her disgusting gang-rape is extremely effective. However his characterization of Christine falls very short. Christine is too one-dimensionally good: the voice of unquestioned reason in a world of ignorant white people. Christine never once questions the foreigners humanity, even after growing up in an environment of intolerance for non-whites. This is extremely unrealistic. Even after Christine learns that Osuqo accidently killed her (Christine's) father, (another 'good white' unconditionally loving Osuqo), she does not doubt the foreigners. She shows very little anger, or even resentment. Christine is obviously a very understanding girl, but who would be this perfect having grown up taught all non-white Christians are sub-human, (even raised by a third tolerant mother). I think the book would have been much more effective had Christine originally hated the Indians, then GROWN to accept them as human beings. Also, although Osuqo is superbly portrayed as distrustful towards whites, it is a bit unreal to believe that after being attacked by about atleast 10 sailors she would not be scared of them at all- only angry. If the authors message is that tolerance overcomes intolerance, then he should have at least centered the story around a few realistically initially-intolerant Europeans, and focused the story on their gradual acceptance of the Indians. All in all, 50 % compelling story, well-developed foreigners, but too one-dimensional ''heroine.'' Read the book from Osuqo's point of view, and add your own dimension to Christine- it isn't there in the book.
The cruelty toward a misunderstood people effectively shown.......1999-01-12
Mette Newth did an awesome job when writing from the perspective of Osuqo using metaphors and similes to compare her thoughts to landmarks and beliefs of her land. I could see how Christine was caught in the middle of the situation and how she struggled to make the right decisions. This novel gave me a harsh view of how foreigners were treated and the cruelty that Osuqo and Poq had to face just because they were misunderstood.

Keeping iguanas healthy entails housing these animals in a temperature-controlled terrarium. Paperback / 144 Pages / 6 1/2 x 7 7/8 / 2000
Customer Reviews:
Have your heart set on a little iggy? Read this book first!.......2004-02-26
As I read through "The Iguana Handbook", I was sorely disappointed, but not because the book was bad. In fact, the book was so detailed and accurate that it made me reconsider getting a baby iggy until I could house it in its adult form. Too many people get an iguana without thinking about what the future holds, and what needs to be done for one. I am happy to announce that this book will help to impart some of the knowledge necessary to make an iguana a happy and thriving member of your family.
Richard D. and Patricia Pope Bartlett are the consummate author team when it comes to herpetology and they show it well as they painstakingly illustrate the life and needs of a properly-cared-for Green Iguana (and some of its confamiliars). With their assistance, it is no longer necessary for captive iggies to suffer from Metabolic Bone Disease and other such ailments inflicted upon them by poor diet. They also tell how to build a lovely cage, take care of an iggy out-of-doors, house one with other lacertilians, breed them and many other useful tidbits.
Great iguana care book.......2001-01-27
Finally, a good book with all true information. If you want an iguana book this is one of the few to get. Easy to read and is written by experienced iguana owners. I highly recommend it.

Seeds Over All.......2007-08-14
Amazon Shoppers: Rather than let the biased and ignorant review by Twan stand alone, as the aouthor of this acclaimed book, I thought it necessary to point out that her criticisms are based on what the publisher wrote and a blurb that authors have little of no control over--it's all bombastic tripe. As a reader of books for sixty years, I know that you can judge a book by its cover and "Seeds" is no exception.
not what I expected.......2005-09-05
In the editorial review it says "he provides detailed advice on buying, storing and germinating, sterilizing soil, indoor to outdoor transplanting---even building cold frames.
In the book on page 204 it says "a cold frame---- consist of a small garden area that is roofed over with glass----"
That's it. The detailed advice.
I thumbed through the book, and I have not found any plant mentioned with how en when to sow.
This book has nothing to do with growing anything from seed.
The book was a disapointment for me. Mailing it back to the USA was to expensive, so I'll have to keep it.
