nice intro, like an appetizer.......2003-04-10

THis is a very brief history of post-war furniture and lighting design to accompany an exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Design. There are 5 essays, each on a decade of design starting in 1950. They are succinct, very well written, and interesting in that they look at the more general history of the period as well as covering the design movements. However, they are so short that you can read them all in a single sitting, which is what I just did. As I am quite ignorent of design history, it was extremely enlightening for me - I now feel ready for a bigger meal. It was the ideal preparation for a project I am embarking on on design. Furthermore, there are wonderful photos and features on many famous objects, all of which have solid descriptions of what the design innovation represented and what is new about them. All in all, it is a masterful book even if I expected just a bit more.

Recommmended to beginners in the field and as a reference.

A Feast for Lovers of Sophocles.......2004-07-12

Anyone who has an interest in reading Sophocles in Greek will have likely heard of the classic commentaries on all seven plays written by Richard Jebb in the early twentieth-century.
Some may, like me, have tattered old copies of these commentaries bought second-hand sitting on their shelves.

Fortunately, those looking for Jebb's commentaries no longer have to make do with dilapidated second-hand copies, since Bristol Classical Press is currently in the process of reissuing all seven commentaries.

The Bristol edition of Oedipus Coloneus has a good modern introduction to Jebb's commentary written by classical scholar Rush Rehm as well as the complete text of Jebb's edition of the play as well as his commentary. One of the nice things about the commentary is that, unlike most editions of Greek literary works, it runs along the bottom of the page of the Greek text. This saves one the hassle of constantly flipping back and forth between the text at the front of the book and the commentary at the back of the book.

Also, Jebb's translation of the play runs along the opposite page to the Greek text. While some might find this off-putting, I personally like having the translation there as a kind of supplement to the commentary.

The only complaint I have about the book is the binding. Unfortunately, prolonged use leads to pages falling out.

This book was fast paced and fascinating. It made you think and cry all at the same time. The characters are real people --you can identify with them. The short chapters really keep the story moving along. The "Silver Cord" is really a love story about a man and his family. It's a story that says that there is nothing stronger than the power of faith and love, and that love can conquer any evil. I enjoyed it and look forward to a sequel.
