      Book Description

A comprehensive and compact field guide, Trees of Central Texas introduces 186 species of tree life in Central Texas, an area roughly the region of the Edwards Plateau and bordered by the Balcones Escarpment on the south and east, the Pecos River on the west, and the Texas Plains and the Llano Uplift on the north. From the hardy oaks and rugged mesquites to the graceful willows, cottonwoods, and pecans, the tree life of Central Texas varies as much as the vast and changing land that hosts it. Full descriptions and superb illustrations of all the native and naturalized trees of the region as well as fascinating bits of history and lore make this an essential guide to the wealth of tree life in Central Texas.

Drawn from Robert A. Vines' monumental Trees, Shrubs, and Woody Vines of the Southwest (University of Texas Press), Trees of Central Texas combines the essential detail of the larger work with the ease and convenience of a field guide.

3 out of 5 stars Good Reference for Texas and Louisiana.......2006-06-07

This is a good book on wildflowers, vines, shrubs, trees of Texas and adjoining parts of Louisiana. Pictures are generally very good and are grouped by color and in a section by themselves. Each picture has a number reference and looking up the number gives you plant ID information and a range map. My biggest criticism of the book is that it just doesn't cover enough species - for what it does cover, it is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars More than just a great little field guide...........2001-06-15

I own several field guides to Texas wildflowers, and I find this one to be the best among them. There are books with bigger and better photographs, but none come close to having the nearly 400 color photos this one has. This one also has maps of growing areas for each plant identified and very clear descriptions of each plant. It even has sections on Texas' endangered species and landscaping with native plants.

The book divides the plants into five sections for easy use. The wildflowers are further divided into colors to help find and identify them quickly. The five sections are (1) herbaceous wildflowers, (2) vines, (3) trees and shrubs, (4) cacti, agaves, yuccas and other succulents, and (5) miscellaneous plants, weeds and growths on trees. These are followed by appendices on how to identify common plant families and "plant watching" as a hobby (collecting plants, how to make a plant press and save your specimens, and a sample wildflower documentation sheet). Finally, there are three glossaries and an index.

While some might complain that the plant photographs are not printed with the specimen entries (they are grouped together in the center of the book), this is really quite handy. Each photo is numbered identically with the entries, so matching the photo with the description is really very simple. Indeed, it is quite easy to find the flower by its photo and then look up the corresponding plant description by the photo number.

All in all, this is the only wildflower field guide Texans will need. If you want a desk reference, that's another matter.

      Book Description

INTRODUCTION At first glance there seems little to link Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, not even geographical proximity. Six hundred kilometres of the South China Sea separates Peninsular Malaysia (also called West Malaysia or the Malay Peninsula) from the Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah (also called East Malaysia) in the north of Borneo. And Bangkok is as close to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore as is the Bruneian capital Bandar Seri Begawan. But all three countries are born of a common history and ethnic composition that links the entire Malay archipelago, from Indonesia to the Philippines. Each became an important port of call on the trade route between India and China, the two great markets of the early world, and later formed the colonial linchpins of the Portuguese, Dutch and British empires. However, Malaysia has only existed in its present form since 1963, when the federation of the eleven Peninsular states, along with Singapore and the two Bornean territories of Sarawak and Sabah, became known as Malaysia. Singapore left the union in 1965, gaining independence in its own right; Brunei, always content to maintain its own enclave in Borneo (it decided not to join the Federation of Malaysia in 1963), only lost its British colonial status in 1984.

Since then, Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei have been united in their economic dominance of Southeast Asia. While the tiny Sultanate of Brunei is locked into a paternalistic regime, using its considerable oil wealth to guarantee its citizens an enviable standard of living, the city-state of Singapore has long been a model of free-market profiteering, transformed from a tiny port with no natural resources into one of the world's capitalist giants. Malaysia is the relative newcomer to the scene, though it has an ambitious manifesto by which it aims to achieve First World status by 2020. This will involve doubling the size of the economy and increasing personal income fourfold by that time, with tourism massively expanding in the process. The most ambitious part of this project is the building of the Multimedia Super Corridor, a belt of hi-tech development stretching 50km south from the capital Kuala Lumpur, and including a new, purportedly paperless, administrative city, Putrajaya.

Though Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei don't have the grand ancient ruins of neighbouring Thailand, their rich cultural heritage is apparent, with traditional architecture and crafts thriving in the rural kampung (village) areas, and on display in cultural centres and at exhibitions throughout the modern cities. The dominant cultural force in the region has undoubtedly been the Malay adoption of Islam in the fourteenth century, while in Singapore, Buddhism and Taoism together hold sway among half the population. But it's the commitment to religious plurality - there are sizeable Christian and Hindu minorities - that is so attractive, often providing startling juxtapositions of mosques, temples and churches. What's more, the region's diverse population, a blend of indigenous Malays, Chinese and Indians, has spawned a huge variety of annual festivals as well as a wonderful mixture of cuisines.

As well as a rich cultural life, the region has astonishing natural beauty. With parts of Thailand starting to suffer from overexposure to tourism, it comes as a welcome surprise to discover Peninsular Malaysia's unspoiled east-coast beaches, while both the Peninsula and the Bornean states have some of the world's oldest tropical rainforest. The national parks are superb for cave exploration, river-rafting and wildlife-watching, and provide challenging treks, including that to the peak of one of Southeast Asia's highest mountains, Mount Kinabalu in Sabah.

2 out of 5 stars does not contain much.........2002-11-16

this rough guide isn pretty much the same as the other guides.. as usual in singapore it contains the usual places.. orchard, little india, sentosa, east coast and the usual touristy places. It does not include the heartlanders area eg. Hougang, Yishun etc. For eg, in woodlands.. it only mention the the zoo.. did you know that's a big Shopping Mall in Woodlands called the Causeway point.. nect to the MRT station.. As for eating places.. it fail to capture the good places for local food.. may interest the food lovers and those adventourous enough to try..

It should include a portion on the heartlanders.. I'm sure some tourist may want to see our locals their way of life.. for eg a tour of an HDB estate (public housing) that may include the market, the coffeeshop, look at the flat inside out.. etc.. the peculiar and distinct characters of the heartlanders.. etc.. otherwise tourists may think S'pore is just of the "place"

      3 out of 5 stars Not bad...but could've been better.......2001-07-01

This guide is great, at least from a pre-trip standpoint. When it comes to planning a trip to Malaysia, the historical and cultural aspects of the book are above reproach. The authors clearly know their way around the country. But that doesn't translate into using the book when you get to Malaysia. While hotel prices are listed, they're done so using a code system, forcing readers to continue flipping back to the key located early on in the guide. I've relied on Lonely PLanet's guidebook before, and I'll keep doing so - only because its layout is superior to the Rough Guide.

5 out of 5 stars More than just hotel and restaurant reviews.......2000-11-07

Even if your not planning on taking a trip to Malaysia anytime soon, this book will prove an interesting read for those who love learning about the world. I recently took on the task of writing a paper about Malaysia for a college-level geography class. There were certainly more traditional reference guides at my disposal, but I found this book to be more informative than any other book I used. Unlike most other travel guide series', Rough Guides do an excellent job of not only making sure travelers know where to stay and what to eat, but how NOT to make fools of themselves by ignoring local customs and traditions. This guide through Malaysia is no exception. The section on Singapore and Brunei provide significant, and substantial information, while the chapter on Malaysia's capital city, Kuala Lumpur, answered every question a traveler could possibly think of. Every part of the guide proved truly helpful in my research and study. And more than anything, it has inspired me to visit the place that I've learned so much about as a good travel guide should.

This book was a godsend on our recent trip. On the Island of Langkawi we found the advice on boat trips to the coral reef saved us some money.

Too wordy for such a young targeted audience. Illustrations are not flattering to the First Families. According to the book jacket the artist has yet to tour the White House.

      5 out of 5 stars 1 PICTURE WORTH 1,000 WORDS.......2000-11-30

A short poem best describes my review of this book: "In this time of White House stress, When "The West Wing" is the best, It is nice to see a work of art, Showing 1600 has a heart!" THE BOOK IS AS CUTE AS THIS POEM! The author and the illustrator are both world class!

5 out of 5 stars I Love the book !!.......2000-11-15

A wonderful book for children to see how the First Familes celebrate Christmas at the White House. I love how the author has woven true events of each First Family at Christmas into the text. The color illustrations are absolutely beautiful. The additional information in the back of the book for parents, grandparents, and teachers is a real plus. It is really hard to find a non-fiction Children's book of this caliber. Of course, I think the author's first book "Season's Greeting's from the White House" is a classic !

4 out of 5 stars Nice combination of technical information and passion.......1999-03-27

The author studied with Ansel Adams and shares his passion for photography. She has written a great but small book for novices who want to copy or enhance their old family photos and documentation. She is candid about the mistakes she made in her geneology work. I appreciate her breezy attitude and her enthusiam for documenting family heritage. She presents an excellence balance between technical information and the importance of capturing personality not just the phototgraphic image.

4 out of 5 stars Memories of an American hero.......2002-04-06

The Lone Navy Eagle is the story of a young man, forced by fate and bound by duty, into the life of a combat avitator in World War Two.

                    W. Ed Parker is one of the true American patriots in the nation, tirelessly fighting America's enemies, both foreign and domestic.

Mr. Parker was a farm boy from North Carolina when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Immediately after completing high school, he joined the Navy and trained for a naval avitator. Although younger and less educated than most of the other cadets, he developed a quick instict for flying.

During the war, he was assigned to the USS Princeton, and spent most of his time in engaged in the tedious, but vital job of recon patrols. He did, however, manage to get combat action against the Japanese, including a daring skip bombing run where he bounced a 500-pound bomb into a Japanese entrenchment, enabling the Marines to advance on the island.

Unfortunately for the book, Mr. Parker wasn't able to utilize many of his records, because his ship was sunk by the Japanese, essentially ending his tour in the Pacific. Without his records, he lacks details of his missions, but he does provide many other details, such as maps and schematics, from extensive research into the Navy archives.

Mr. Parker doesn't detail much daily activity while in the Navy, aside from playing bridge, and reading intelligence reports. It is interesting to note his opinion on the atomic bomb and its role in the war.

This book will be enjoyed by anyone wishing to learn more about the unknown officer in World War Two, one of the "Greatest Generation."

If you're looking for a kick butt exercise routine with little or no equiment, then here you go! Great and innovative exercises that will make you sweat and tone. I've seen band routines before and they seems boring, for rehab or the elderly. The exercise program on the free cd is killer. A full body workout that targets every part of the body. I love it. Since I have but 30 minutes a day to train this is perfect. Even better I take the band with me, it weights 2oz, and I can workout anywhere. Well written, simple to understand for beginners. A few of the exercises are shown being done on an exercise ball. But just as easily done without. Good book, great workout!

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed because of Incomplete Information.......2006-02-17

I bought this book looking for a workout that offered good resistance training requiring little equipment, since I live in an extremely small space. Although the workout appears to be an excellent one, the book misleadingly states on the cover "All You Need Is the Body and the Band;" however, the workout described in the book also requires a Swiss exercise ball. Ironically, I had chosen this title over the other in the series requiring the ball precisely because I do not own a ball, cannot afford to buy one at this time, do not have the space to store one, and do not have the time to inflate and deflate one each morning before heading off to grad school.

If you're looking for a good workout, and have BOTH a band AND a ball, then I would recommend you try this. As for me, however, I may simply have to return this item to Amazon.

Being a homebrewer for 4 years, I have found that Brewers Publications' Classic Beer Styles Series is an excellent resource for discovering and making numerous quality brews. In Altbier, Horst Dornbusch tackles a style that few people may have ever had. His approach is practical and to the point. The history section is thorough without being long-winded, as is sometimes the case with other books in the series. Mr. Dornbusch has done an excellent job applying his own brewing knowledge in explaining the ins and outs of altbier brewing. I have followed some of the recipes in the book, and I am extremely pleased with the results so far. The only downside to this book is that the section on style profile could have been more thorough and descriptive. However, this book is well worth the investment.

                          Product Description

Neat Pieces is a detailed, extensively illustrated survey of the major forms and makers of the "plain style" of furniture made and used by Georgians in the 1800s. Simply designed, solidly constructed of local woods, and usually unadorned, such pieces were used daily by their owners for storage, sleeping, eating, and more. Today, this furniture is read by historians, folklorists, and other experts for clues into a past way of life. It is also prized by museums, antiques dealers and auction houses, and furniture appraisers, collectors, and makers.

Neat Pieces first appeared as the companion volume to the Atlanta History Center's seminal 1983 exhibit of the same name. The exhibit featured 126 exemplary pieces of furniture, including chairs, tables, huntboards, washstands, and candlestands. Each of them is described and illustrated in this book. Photographs in the original edition of Neat Pieces were black-and-white; here they are color. A new foreword by Deanne Levison looks at related publications and exhibits of the subsequent two decades. The introduction, by William W. Griffin, provides information on furniture forms, nomenclature, and finishes. Also included in the book is a list of more than twelve hundred nineteenth-century Georgia furniture craftsmen, with key details of their lives and work.

Includes: 126 exemplary pieces of furniture (including chairs, tables, huntboards, washstands, and candlestands); 172 color photographs, 17 black-and-white photographs; Information on furniture forms, nomenclature, and finishes; Details about more than twelve hundred nineteenth-century Georgia furniture craftsmen

                                  Book Description

Of all the major jazz artists, Thelonious Monk was one of the most original musical thinkers--nonconformist, idiosyncratic, imaginative, eccentric--in a word, unique. In The Thelonious Monk Reader, Rob van der Bliek has brought together some of the most revealing pieces ever written on Monk, providing a full portrait of the musician and his impact on the jazz world. Here is a wealth of information that was previously scattered and difficult to locate, including a wide range of articles, profiles, reviews, interviews, liner notes, and music analyses. Ranging in date from 1947 to 1999, these 39 pieces feature the work of some of our best jazz critics, including Leonard Feather, Ira Gitler, Nat Hentoff, Andre Hodeir, Gunther Schuller, Martin Williams, and many others. The book spans Monk's childhood and early recordings with Blue Note and Prestige, his Riverside period and the critical recognition that followed the release of Brilliant Corners, and his fame and fortune during his Columbia years. Readers will find colorful descriptions of Monk's eccentric lifestyle as well as thoughtful commentary on his unorthodox piano technique, which was marked by off-center accents and idiosyncratic voicings, broken rhythms, alternately dense and stripped down chords, and creative use of silence. Rob van der Bliek also provides a general introduction and brief introductions to each piece as well as critical annotations that place the work in context. Controversial, often contradictory, and always engaging, these readings offer a complete view of the man, his music, and his time. The only such book on Monk's life and work, this volume will be "must reading" for jazz fans and scholars, musicians, music lovers, and readers with an interest in African-American culture.

5 out of 5 stars The coolest cat in jazz.......2006-06-22

Thelonious Monk was the hippest, coolest, swingin'est, be-boppin'est, so far-out he's in'est cat in all of jazzdom. Critics couldn't figure him out, but audiences dug him the most, and you will too.
This wonderful book collects dozens of articles by influential music writers of the 40s 50s and 60s, from when Monk started as a cult favorite, all the way to when he became a worldwide sensation. You'll discover in these pages that some writers dismissed him. Others took a patronizing attitude. A few actually dug him. All of the writers were fascinated by him, his now-recognized musical genius, and his playful onstage antics. It's a glimpse into the past showing how people reacted to what was to become timeless jazz music.

3 out of 5 stars Blood and Banquets..........2001-10-29

I was very much looking forward to reading this book because I am very interested in the Jewish experience during the Holocaust. According to the cover summary, Bella Fromm was a Jewish journalist who moved in very exclusive Nazi circles, while in the background managed to save hundreds of non-Aryans. Again according to the summary, she is a very charming character, and once interrupted a Goering anti-Jew speech to remind him that she was Jewish, whereupon he said he would decide who was Jewish. This book is her diary, which chronicles her experiences from 1932 to 1938 in Germany.

Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this book at all. The cover summary is very misleading in many respects. Although Bella Fromm was indeed a witness to the rise of Nazi power, her diary entries are very detached as a general rule. One gets no sense of Bella Fromm as a person. Her diary entries are merely a description of parties and events she has attended, with very few editorial comments. In addition, there are so many characters coming and going, that the reader can't keep track of them all.

In addition, the comments regarding Goering's speech and his interactions with Fromm are completely false! Although Fromm does state that Goering did make this comment once (that he would decided who was Jewish), it had nothing to do with Bella Fromm. In addition, the claims of her savings hundreds of lives are only mentioned in passing. Only 2 or 3 sentences in the books actually refer to these claims, and give no detail at all about how they transpired.

I still gave this book a 3-star rating because I feel it is important to remember what happened in the 1930's and 1940's. And there are several poignant stories in the book about the treatment of non-Aryans. However, I was rather disappointed by this book, because I had high expectations.

I guess you can't judge a book by its cover....
