        4 out of 5 stars Very Handy.......2007-10-17

Very Useful Guide to the Big Apple, it includes pretty much all you need: metro maps, street maps, major attractions, descriptions, and properly selected Tips. Unfortunately no real insider news.
The chosen listing into different districts is great since it shows detail maps for every sightseing spot shown in every district, a rip out full fold map of manhatten is included though too.
        Negative:
The suggested "hot clubs" are the common meat markets of the city. The recommended "harlem soul food restaurant" disappointed as well Nothing special...

        Buttom Line:

For a short trip to NYC this Book is all you need. Major phone numbers, sight seeing, tips to save money, culture, arts, shopping you'll find it all! To find the really sneaky places you have to talk to the locals!

        4 out of 5 stars For a short visit, it's perfect.......2007-09-20

I was recently in the area for a business trip and had a couple days to spend in the City. LP's "NYC Encounter" book was invaluable as a quick resource for addresses, the subway map, and highlights of the more touristed Manhattan districts. To its credit, and unlike many other guides which believe visitors have no business leaving Manhattan, it also included a brief overview of some Brooklyn sights. For a short visit I found New York City Encounter perfect, but when I return for a longer visit a more detailed guide would work better- hopefully with more coverage of the other boroughs.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book to actually carry around with you........2007-01-27

Some people might want even more info but there really is enough in this book to plan a great visit to NYC. Plus it's small enough to carry with you so you always have a map, a subway map and food recommendations with you. I tried a number of the restaurants listed in this book and they were all very good. The street map with items plotted right on it is very helpful and I'd be a mess without the subway map. If you want to make sure you cover all the best sights and museums, the Highlights section near the front is a great check list. This book has served me well on two trips to NYC, I plan to buy the new edition when it comes out in May before I go back over the summer.

        1 out of 5 stars Too itemized.......2006-02-20

The LP 'Best Of' book on NYC was to itemized. It ended up containing very little actual information on NYC. My girlfriend and I was in NYC the week of the 6th of February and used nothing but the map. More useful information can be found on the internet, so I cannot recommend this book; even though it is inexpensive, it is money well used for other purchases.

5 out of 5 stars A neat history of regular interval publishing........2004-04-18

I got this wonderful book in 1992 and I've recently re-read it and I still think it is the best survey of magazine design. Magazines (and newspapers) are rather unique in their design because the words and the visuals are so tightly connected. Other areas of print design can be taught in design schools but to adequately cover publication design schools would have to employ sub-editors and other wordsmiths, not a very practical solution! Bill Owen's book is not a how-to manual but a good solid history in words and thankfully plenty of covers and spreads.

This design history starts in the early years of the last century but to my mind the story really comes alive in America during the Thirties and Forties. Great titles like Fortune, Harper's Bazaar, Glamour, Vanity Fair and others had publishers who realised the importance of strong visuals and having a good Art Editor. During the Fifties and Sixties a whole raft of talent was creating stunning looking magazines. My favorites were Otto Storch on McCalls (the things he could do with Baskerville Old Face were just amazing) Herb Lubalin and his rather short run on the Saturday Evening Post in 1961 and Willi Fleckhaus on Twen (a stunning looking German monthly that made a design virtue of black pages and a condensed typeface called Schmalfette Grotesk. A German book devoted to this very influential title is 'Twen, revision of a legend' by Michael Koetzle, ISBN 3781404382).

The text has plenty of spreads (in color) and in the latter part of the book the pages are filled with these and long captions. The survey ends about the late Eighties so it does not cover a lot of the contemporary US and European publications. Editorial design in so many of these, it seems to me, is a bit of a free-for-all because it is so easy create something using the latest software.

If you are interested in the history of magazine design over the last few decades Owen's book is the one to get. A book that covers the history of one corner of the magazine business, the weekly news titles, that I found fascinating is 'Kiosk: A history of photojournalism' by Robert LeBeck (ISBN 388243791X) and I particularly liked it because it has hundreds of spreads, rather than just individual photos, from the great weeklies like Life, Stern, Paris Match, Picture Post and others.

                Book Description

Design and the Modern Magazine provides a thematically arranged set of essays that examine the changing character of the magazine as an important aspect of cultural life from the late nineteenth century until today. In doing so it offers some of the first detailed case-studies of individual titles and analyses how design decisions are made alongside editorial, commercial and technical considerations. The book suggests ways to understand the magazine as a designed object. Among the more significant titles considered are Woman’s Home Companion, Design, Woman and Vogue. While largely drawing from British and American sources, the book also covers the impact of modern design ideas from Europe on such publications.

As a professional animal psychic, Amelia Kinkade helps clients locate lost pets, diagnose baffling behavior, and further explore the indelible bond that exists between people and their animal companions. But her real mission is to convince people that, with the proper dedication, training, and understanding, everyone can do what she does . Here, she explains the subtle cues that form the foundation of animal communication, and provides guided exercises that allow readers to explore these cues for themselves. With gentle encouragement, she shows how to look for communications typically drowned out in the noise and chaos of modern life, whether they take the form of clairaudience or clairvoyance. Filled with amazing stories, The Language of Miracles inspires readers to sit down with the animals in their lives and explore the unspoken world between them.

I'm already applying the concepts and feel a deeper connection with my 4 rescue dogs. I haven't heard them talk back yet but i'm remaining open. I kept in contact with them while we were out of town for 3 days and the babysitter said they were all very calm and good.

This is the high-tech version of her earlier book "Straight From the Horse's Mouth." If you are truly interested in inter-species communication, this is must-read.In it, she lays out all the latest scientific understanding of how commuication works, and gives a steady instuctional how-to. Really excellent.

                              5 out of 5 stars Miracles Underfoot.......2007-04-07

This is an engaging book by a professional animal communicator. The anecdotes she shares are truly amazing and lots of fun. Additionally, she provides techniques by which the reader can also learn to talk with the animals.

I do have a few quibbles, however. The first is that the author is determined to provide a recognized scientific basis to explain the communication. As the traditional sciences have never been particuarly flexible even when they have been totally wrong (the world is flat, the earth is the center of the universe, etc)they are unlikely to be convinced by the latest theories in quantum physics. The people who buy this book already know and believe. I found the constant insertion of scientific thoery and the author's dumbing it down for the rest of us annoying, unneccesary and patronizing. Additionally, I found her names for her processes clumsy. Just say bridge of light instead of lumenstilta!

The author warns prospective communicators that they risk actual physical and possibly emotional pain by engaging in her healing techniques. As a reiki master and qi gong practitioner,I respectfully disagree. Healers, while frequently empathic, do not have to take on the ailments of their patients. I was surprised that the author was so insistent on acceptance of the pain--as animals are capable of communicating in pictures, a request to do so would suffice without the pain.

The author's occasional coyness was irritating, particuarly when describing a session without revealing the animals she was treating. Their species was neighter shocking nor appalling. It also appeared that she was, at times, anthromorphizing the creatures, with her insistence that they have "boyfriends". Her chapter on her housefly was truly unneccesary.

However, all in all, it was a fun read that encourages dancing down the avenues of communication with you furry, feathered or scaled friends.

I cant speak highly enough of this book as a reference for animal communicators. Amelia is amazing!

5 out of 5 stars The Language of miracles.......2006-08-06

Fantastic, Inspiring. Privilege to learn from Amelia and all the animals. Interspecies communication should be OFCOURSE in everyones normal daily life. Great job Amelia of getting word and training around the world. Love and light for your journey ;-) .

5 out of 5 stars Complete and accurate.......2006-06-23

Doug Winter's updated reference on Dahlonega gold is a superb work and a vast improvement over the previous edition. The information on strike, color, surfaces, luster, and eye appeal are complemented by interesting "personal observations" and updated information on die varieties. Of course, the condition census is a moving target but believed to be current at the time of publication.

There has been some criticism of the photography. Actually, Mary Winter is a superb gold coin photographer, and I have seen color photographs of these same coins taken by her (they are available on the Heritage Auctions coin website if you search the auction archives for Green Pond Collection, FUN 2004). I believe that the publisher bungled the presentation of the images (too small and not enoguh contrast). This will undoubtedly be corrected in future editions.

Overall, anyone with an interest in Dahlonega gold coins will find this to be a valuable and important reference.

                              3 out of 5 stars Nepotism...A Bad Idea.......2004-12-28

There is much to like in this book. It is scholarly in its approach to population data condition, census data, and rarity estimates. It discusses well various die varities, and the history surrounding the mint, although brief, is informative. It is in the area of photography that this book falls dismally flat. It is, after all, a book on gold coins, and one of the major appeals of gold has historically been its color. Yet there is not one single color photograph in the book. They are all black and white, almost thumbnail in size, grainy and lacking in detail. When photos are enlarged to show some detail, a D/D for example, they fail to adequately illustrate the variety they are meant to. Compare this to some other similar books, David Lange's "Complete Guide" series for example, and you will see what a disservice these photographs do to the rest of the book. The photographer is listed as Mary Winter, who I presume is related to the author, probably his wife. While it's a noble goal to offer employment to a family member, maybe some other task should have been offered her rather than make her the photographer on what otherwise would have been a fine book. Having said that, I am still glad I have it for the information it provides, ergo the three stars, that, with better photographs, would have been five.
