Well written and well researched.......2003-07-28
I got to see Tim and Barbara Sykes at an event in Houston a couple years ago. I was impressed with their knowledge - not only of wild edibles but also of the history and mythology about many of their favorite "weeds". I opted for the ebook rather than the printed version because of the price ... but the color photographs made it a real bargain.

Unique reference.......2007-04-07
This is an interesting book to read by itself, listing various morbid museums and churches all over europe. Most of the "weird" museums are tourist traps (I had been to some of them before reading the book), though some are sort of "old science" rather than anything particularly weird. Some of the weird church stuff is a reference to 'weird' men's clubs like freemasonry, but most of it deals with catholic relics. Having been raised catholic, it isn't much of a big deal to see some saint's alleged finger or legbone in a fancy reliquary in a church, but some of the macabre stuff does really get beyond the pale. I suppose if you are catholic and on tour, you might go check out relics of your favorite saints.
There was a nifty section on the 16th century malarial ghost towns outside of Rome which was worth the price of the book. That's just ... weird. Nobody thinks of ghost towns in europe (though you see them around the veneto, those are more logical). Though with the demographics heading the way they are, there may be more of them in the future.
As a tourist book, it is a little hard to use. There are of course no maps to speak of to actually find these places. Some websites might be nice. Also, the index is pretty difficult to use. That said, it is pretty unique as a reference for europe.
not as helpful as it seems.......2001-08-26
I bought this book prior to my european trip thinking it would help a lot as far as finding the non touristy, weird , and bizarre places. it is helpful to an extent but it ends up just repeating info that more general guides such as Lonely Planet's Europe on a Shoestring and Let's Go Europe have. if you are planning to go for a lengthy period of time do not buy this book for it will only be extra weight. Lonely Planet's Europe has all the info you need. from hostels to bizarre places to go and see. overrall Weird Europe is not a bad guide, it just seems unnecessary if you already have one of the above guides. places are listed in a good order and the book even provides the directions how to get to most of those, such as metro stops, etc. a lot of guides repeat info. one is enough. i learned that one month into the trip when the weight of that backpack really starts digging into your shoulders.
Perfection - just what I was looking for..........2000-09-01
The countries are listed alphabetically, then the corresponding listings of offbeat experiences and sights to be checked out in each, arranged by city. Each listing has one or more icons next to it, for example, "cemeteries, ossuaries, and corpses", "strange towns", or "outrageous art". There are 21 categories in all. This much-needed book is fascinating, well-organized, and unique. I am currently planning a trip with this book as the primary guide. After reading it cover to cover I realized that there is no way that I won't have an unforgettable and unusual experience.
Extremely amusing, and a good read........2000-03-29
This is really a good compendium of oddities. I know parts of Europe really well, more than I thought these authors would. But I was surprised to find that they had eccentric locales listed that I knew nothing about. They have done a very good job. A book that is definitely worth buying.
Wonderful guide to offbeat Europe........1999-08-11
This gem is indispensible for any trip to Europe. The authors have compiled a remarkable directory of visitor spots not found in guide books, and they are fascinating and diverse.

No Housebreaking Information.......2002-01-22
Even though the front and back cover both show "housebreaking" as part of what is included in the book, it is not mentioned even once in the book. The book mostly provides a historical perspective and physical description of the breed. There is very little practical information on how to properly take care of a dachshund or how to train one.
good overview of dachshunds, very good pictures, not indept.......1999-08-31
I thought it gave me a very good idea of the breed help me decide what kind of dachshund I wanted. Now that I adopted one I'm looking for more indept information than this book can provide.
Beginner's book.......1999-01-12
The photography in this book is a plus. It covers the different breeds of dachshunds. Helpful hints on toys also.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best herbal books I've encountered.......2007-01-12
I took an herbology course online and have certification, and along the way I ordered this book. Fantastic herb pictures, general uses, how to make dedoctions, infusions, tinctures. The book had me experimenting with a number of items I was paying high prices at the health food stores, and I had excellent results. Loaned the book out, it never came back so I reordered it. Chock full of info not found in other books I read!
Herbs are Medicine.......2006-10-12
Herbs are medicine. As great as the illustrations and explanations are in this book, the authors could deal a deadly blow to those who aren't ready to be herbalists. People are taking herbs like prescriptions and need to know that vitamins are food, herbs are medicine, and a more holistic approach is necessary before delving into plants. Try reading, "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," by Rayna Gangi before purchasing this book.
Simply outstanding. I won't even loan it out !.......2004-05-14
If you're into herbalism in the least this book is absolutely and totally essential. It has full-color photographs of most of the major herbs in both their natural and harvested (dried/powdered) states. It also lists a wealth of information on each herb from it's Latin name, common names, basic plant and chemical characteristics, homeopathic uses and quite a bit more. There are priceless reference charts in the back of the book with outstanding information about herb harvesting and cultivation in other sections. It's a bit pricey but it's full-color and WELL worth it. I NEVER loan my copy out. It's that valuable to me.
The New Age Herbalist --a necessity for studying herbs.......2004-04-28
I believe that anyone caring for themselves ought to have at least 3 books on herbal actions. For studying the herbs more broadly, one would need a number of herbals (herb books) A general book is good for an overview, or quick reference, but doesn't give enough depth on any subject. "New Age Herbalist', for me, is the best for herbal indentification because it contains actual colored photos of herbs, not tiny drawings. It has an impressive amount of color plate pages for the price.
I don't think of it as a "new age" book because it would impress a scientific mind with its listing of active chemical ingredients of each herb. The rest serves as a fine overview guide also, and has a great section on homemade bath products.
I feel a need to have a book for quick reference, several for deeper knowledge on each herb, several for identification, several for historical uses, at least one for gardening and drying, a mini quick reference for traveling. When you have a headache, you don't want to be reading about how to get rid of soil bugs. Hope this helps.
Excellent!.......2004-02-24
This was the first book I ever got on herbs almost ten years ago. It's definatly time worn. I still use it has a helpful reference, and recommend it. As others have mentioned, it has color photos and illustrations, as well as accurate information on the uses of plants and possible side effects. It also has information on how to use the plants, and general information on the human body and what plants are useful in specific instances. It's not a handy pocket size field guide, for that, I suggest a Petersons.

Book Description
This is the first investigation into the little-known Bolshevik foreign ministry's strenuous efforts to win Lhasa over to the Soviet cause in the 1920s. Examining the history of relations between Russia (tsarist, Soviet and post-Soviet) and Tibet from the 17th century to the 1990s, the author puts at the core of his narrative the previously unknown story of clandestine negotiations between the Soviet government and the 13th Dalai Lama, forming part of Moscow's bitter struggle against British imperialism in Asia.
The book provides insight into Soviet secret diplomacy and draws important conclusions relating to the history of Anglo-Russian competition for Tibet and Tibet's status prior to 1951.
Book Description
Creative Black-and-White Photography guides photographers at all levels in producing the aesthetically advanced, carefully crafted images they've always dreamed of making. In his sequel to Mastering Black-and-White Photography, photographer Bernhard J Suess again makes complex technical and aesthetic problems easy to understand and master. He addresses intricate questions of film exposure and development control, camera filters, creative use of print contrast, dodging and burning, bleaching, and digital imaging. Discussing the many choices he makes in his own photography and why, Suess illustrates the decisions essential to successful black-and-white images.
The book includes more than eighty black-and-white photos, tracing the evolution of images from idea to final print. Each example is accompanied by a detailed explanation of the artistic and technical processes involved as well as a helpful look at how and why the photographer decided to use the techniques. Whether choosing a camera format, arranging a background, or composing a portrait, this invaluable resource shows photographers how to balance different elements in a picture and take advanced steps in creating better black-and-white photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Little to offer.......2007-05-26
I wonder why this was written, and even more so, why it was published. Beginners will be lost by page three, since the author assumes his readers already know the fundamentals. Accomplished photographers will be bored by page three, since the author discloses nothing new, and illustrates his disclosures with photographs that are, well, nothing special. On virtually every page there is another cryptic reference to the Zone System, but anyone up to speed on tone placements via Zone placements will be light years ahead of this book. Those who aren't will feel they're reading Esperanto.
weak.......2005-04-12
very shallow interpretation even for beginners, in addition accompanied by helplessly boring photographs. avoid.
An excellent reference.......2000-03-31
With a clarity of presentation and personal anecdotes, Bernhard Suess masterfully presents techniques and information quite useful to both amateur and skilled photographers. There was a wealth of information presented in this book which significantly improved both my compositional and printing skills. Amidst a plethora of books available on the subject, I feel that Suess makes an exceptional effort to make the topic as accessible as possible. There is a minimum of technical jargon that is not explained, which should appeal to the neophyte, and there are several tricks and techniques that would appeal to the more experienced photographer. I highly recommend this book.
