Dicots are the greatest group of flowering plants, exceeding the monocotyledons, or monocots. Dicots produce a pair of seed leaves during germination, while monocots produce only a single seed leaf. The dicots include such plant groups as roses, mustards, mints, nightshades, milkweeds, This is the fourth volume in the Flowering Plants series devoted to dicotyledons, or dicot plants. asters, and pinks. This volume contains four orders and ten families of dicots. The orders included are Malvales, Urticales, Rhamnales, and Euphorbiales. Within the Malvales are the families Tiliaceae, Sterculiaceae, and Malvaceae. The families Ulmaceae, Moraceae, and Urticacea comprise the Urticales. The Rhamnaceae and Elaeagnaceae make up the Rhamnales. Only the Thymelaeaceae and the Euphorbiaceae are included in the Euphorbiales. The nomenclature for the species and lesser taxa used in this volume has been arrived at after lengthy study of recent floras and monographs. Synonyms, with complete author citation, that have applied to species in the northeastern United States are given under each species. A description, while not necessarily intended to be complete, covers the more important features of the species. The common name, or names, is the one used locally in Illinois. The habitat designation is not always the habitat throughout the range of the species, but only in Illinois. The overall range for each species is given from the northeastern to the northwestern extremities, south to the southwestern limit, then east to the southeastern limit. The range has been compiled from various sources, including examination of herbarium material and some field studies. A general statement is given concerning the range of each species in Illinois. Dot maps showing county distribution for each taxon are provided. Each dot represents a voucher specimen deposited in some herbarium. Each species is illustrated, showing the habitat as well as some of the distinguishing features. These detailed illustrations were provided by Mark Mohlenbrock. Robert H. Mohlenbrock, one of the most prolific writers of contemporary plant scientists, is professor of botany at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale and general editor of the Illustrated Flora of Illinois series.

Clearly Written and Illustrated.......2000-11-05

This volume is one of several (about 10) that will make up a complete Flora of Illinois. Many volumes are available now, and a few wait to be published. The complete flora will include something nearing 3000 entries for individual species of this surprisingly diverse area of the county, with distribution maps specific to IL. Its entries are very readable, while including much information for characteristics and distribution, in addition to many line drawings that make it valuable for ID too.

Good source of information, but lacks some of the nice features found in other LP trakking guides.......2006-07-25

I endorse other reviewer's opinion that the book is useful in particular as a pre-trip planning. In this sense, in my opinion the book is well written, and contains a wealth of information on the subject. However, by comparing it for example with the similar LP guide *Trekking in the Indian Himalaya", it lacks some useful information, like description of side-trips, e.g. easy climbings along the trek. In addition, the index contains only geographical locations, which limits its usefullness.

Use as ballast only.......2005-10-19

I second Isiah's opinion that the book is not very useful and is best read as a pre-trip planning material only. I have actually undertaken a few of the treks and in my opinion the book misrepresents the nature of several treks and contains errors in the route descriptions. For example, Isla del Sol trek in Bolivia is better done as a day hike instead of a multiple day trek described in the book. Also, campsites on Ausangate trek mentioned in the book are not situated in the most optimal locations and most trekkers supported by local guides camp in better spots. Finally, the book fails to convey the idea that even for experienced hikers most treks, esp. in Peru and Bolivia, really need to be contracted with local guides and/or pack animals for safety and more enjoyment... I would not recommend using this book as a trail guide without making inquiries locally, but it is still a good source of ideas, if you plan to trek in Central Andes.

Limited usefulness once in country.......2005-09-10

I tried to use this book as my only travel guide (apart from the LP Peru or Bolivia). It has very limited info on bus routes, city maps, and other practical info common in LP country guides, so it is not meant to be used alone. And where it is strong in giving trek descriptions, it admits it should not be used as a trail map-guide. Most treks are affordably run out of local agencies with guides, so I didn't even bring the book with me on the trail. It is best used for pre-trip planning back home, deciding which treks you want to plan your itinerary around once in country. The LP country guide is really all you'll need.

Not perfect but Very Good..............2004-10-18

I can only speak to how helpful this book was to me on my trek (the Alpamayo circuit) and for the most part, it was a valuable friend to have along the way. The route description was well detailed and for the most part everything was as the book said it would be. Admittedly, it would have been nice if the book had mentioned the surfeit of horseflies which attack you in the Huiscash campsite, as apparently this is a well known campsite for the bothersome biting flies which dive-bomb you 5 at a time. I would have brought some bug repellent if I had known. But other than minor things like this, the book served it purpose very well, and I hope to use it again for when I go back to this beautiful part of the world. One suggestion I would make is to add a few more pages of Spanish words at the back of the book....that could only prove helpful.

Great Book.......2004-03-31

I thought this book was very informative. It described quickly the geology and other "natural" facts about the area as well as supply excellent descriptions of the trails. It is small enough to carry with you.

School Book Nation is an important contribution to understanding the "history wars." Anyone who thinks that the teaching of history only became controversial in the last generation or two would be well-advised to read this work.

Moreau does more than discuss the history of history textbooks; he provides a thoughtful analysis of how textbooks have been written from historiographical and pedagogical perspectives. His research shows history controversies from the early American republic to the present day (and may depress those who think that textbook sales are free from base economic and political motives. Profit, it seems, trumps scholarly aloofness).

The result is an engaging story in its own right on how Americans have viewed and used textbooks over the years.

Both high school teachers and college professors (in particular those professors who teach future teachers) will benefit from School Book Nation. A good companion to That Noble Dream: The 'Objectivity Question' and the American Historical Profession (Ideas in Context) or History Lessons: How Textbooks from Around the World Portray U.S. History.

It needs 256 colors and a minimum of 5 mb of memory RAM (although more is better). It does not require QuickTime or any special installation but will play straight from the CD.

Lack of Originality.......2002-12-09

I don't think this book contained enough names. The names listed were taken from film and TV personalities, historical figures, cartoon characters, etc. This book lacked original names.

I'm a "dog" person & I put a lot of time & energy into naming my dogs! People who hear me talk about them assume they're actual children because I give them "human" names! None of this "Rover" or "Spot" stuff for me...I give my pets first & middle names! This book was extremely diverse & comprehensive in their name sources..to the common everyone-knows-a-Max-or-Sheba names to the really unique ones! Anyone looking at getting a dog should read this..it truly has a name for every dog personality one could possibly think of! A terrific read & one I'd recommend to anyone!!!
