Good reference for planning a tour of Britain.......2005-09-09

This is a great book for planning a cycle tour of Britain. It has strengths common to all the Lonely Planet series, such as advice on getting to and from Britain and using rail and air travel to get to the various touring routes. There are also sections on bicycle maintenance and pre-tour fitness training that might be useful to potential tourists.

From the perspective of using this book as an actual road guide, there are many shortcoming. This book is very much a "townie's" guide, with the majority of route description focusing on where to spend your money on food and accomadation rather than discussing on-the-bike route navigation. The route maps printed in the book are of minimal detail, with many towns and roads omitted. The routes themsevles are descibe by lists of verbal cues and arrows, for example "--> At unisigned road." The combination of these factors means that it is very easy to miss a cue, get off-route, and wind up on a part of your map with no description.

I would recommend supplementing the book with at least the 1:250,000 scale Ordnance Survey Travelmaster maps. The book itself also recommends this, but the editorial review claims the book is a stand-alone guide. Also, many of the descibed routes coincide with the Sustrans National Cycle Network (NCN) in Britain. One might do well to use this book in planning a tour of Britain, then acquiring the detailed cycle route maps from Sustrans.

I purchased this book as a rememberance of a trip to the National Gallery in London. I was not the least bit disappointed. Works of Gainsborough, Turner, Stubbs, Constable, Cox, Whistler, Kokoschky are all included--over 150 color paintings all significant works. Is it tacky to say it also functions as a beautiful coffee table book? :o)

At any rate, it is a wonderful addition to any collection.

I was surprised that this was actually a deck of cards, not a book! I bought four as Christmas gifts (I'm a pet sitter) and was a bit taken aback at the format. It's cute, but I think I'd like it better if it had actually been a book as opposed to a pack of cards. There were some intriguing ideas and anecdotes, though.

Very extensive collection of pots. There were several I have never seen before in any other publication.
Could be organized in a more user friendly manner, but would still reccomend the book to any Hall collector.

Yesterday I received this beautiful book on Tea and Coffee Pots that have been produced by the Hall China Company. If you collect Tea and/or Coffee Pots this is a must have book. It has all the Tea and Coffee Pots that the Hall China Company produced from 1903 to today. The just released book by Gary and Paula Barnebey has over 800 color photos in this 240-page book. This is a well written and researched book has an extensive bibliography. The book contains Tables with general color lines produced through the years and availability over time, a color
chart, and much, much more.

If you collect new, inexpensive teapots, this may be helpful, but for someone looking for vintage and antique teapot info, dont buy this book, its a total waste of time. There are a few vintage pots, but most info in on cheap import teapots. I found this to be a waste of money

No Index!.......2001-11-21

Collectible Teapots is a wonderful book if it only had an index. How can a book that has "A Reference & Price Guide" right under the title not have an index? I don't believe it is the fault of the author, Tina Carter, because she has a section titled "Finding Your Teapot in this Book" and the first sentence says "If you want to find information on a specific teapot, the first place to look is in the Index." Well there is no index.
I called Krause Publications and the person I talked to suggested that it might have been cut out to keep the book a certain size. If that was the case somebody made a real bad decision. After you read through the book and then want to refer back to something you have to flip through the pages hoping to find it again.

extremely general information for a new collector........1999-07-29

A new collector anticipates a little more in pictures, and styles, than general history of the eras of styles. Although this book had many pictures, it didn't quite hit the mark on actually idintifying pots by marks. I believe a colored catalogue of pics with marks would encourage a new collector to research their histories.

I was very pleased with this book, which is why I went out and bought the other Jamaica Kincaid gardening related book.

This would be a lovely gift for a keen gardener, particularly in winter, when one can only dream about the garden. The essays were mainly interesting and informative - some were funny and poignant. The ones that wrote about their actual favourite plant were the best - the ones that went off on 'frolics of their own' just didnt cut it, but these were few, and probably added for unecessary 'colour' and 'arty-fartyness'! The paeony and meconopsis ones are my favourites.

Every gardener has a favorite plant and is anxious to share plants and stories with others. Some of these essays are filled with technical information, others are lyrical musings on the esthetic of plants. Either way, this is a book to cuddle up with and to cherish. It's also a perfect special occasion gift for other gardeners.

uneven in level of interest to the average gardener.......1998-11-11

Overall, the gardeners who wrote about their favorite plants were more interesting to read than most of the other authors. The selection that dealt with ringworm was especially out of place (what on earth did THAT have to do with plants?). The essay on plant collecting was great, though, and Tony Avent's short essay on hostas almost makes me like them. Almost. And you have to like a book that has an essay on Meconopsis. I liked exactly 50% of this book.
