Wow.......2005-05-10
I came across this book in an art class. I don't know about the vanishing flora, but from an artist's point of view, this book is absolutely amazing. The botanical illustrations are supurb, and he has a particularly beautiful way of labeling his pieces. A feast for the eyes.

Customer Reviews:
good inspirational book.......2007-01-03
I bought this book for my wife for Christmas. She likes it as an inspirational book to get some ideas of what we can do for some woodworking/trim for our house.
We find it a little light on the "how to" sections, so we also ordered the Trimwork book - part of the same series.
Ideas Galore!.......2006-02-24
This is the perfect book for someone in the construction phase of their dream home. There are so many pictures providing a pletora of innovative ideas. I really liked the construction pictures that depict how a few separate pieces of molding can create a spectacular design! I'm taking the whole book to my trim guy so he can have a 'visual' of exactly what I want. I've purchased a lot of books as a first time owner/builder, and I have to say, this was certainly one of the best!
Helpful to a new realty agent........2006-02-23
I have found this book to be very helpful when I see architectural features in a house with which I am unfamiliar. When I am done with it, I share it with other new agents.
The descriptions used by the author have helped us write descriptions of our listings on the Multiple Listing Service. We realty agents see varieties of architecture that must be described briefly to help sell the homes. The book provides some descriptive terms that help us beginners.
A Beginner's Education.......2004-11-29
I have recently bought an old house that needs lots of work. I am new to home improvement and found this book really helpful. It is well-written and the practical approach makes it very accessible. Just flicking through the pages gives you loads of ideas and inspiration. There are technical drawings for a behind-the-scenes, how-to view. The photos are accompanied by clear (and occasionally witty) captions. There's also a useful glossary. I have filled three recessed nooks with shelves and am now renovating my staircase with the help of this book.
Best of its Kind - Informative and Fun to Read.......2004-07-20
I loved this book. Much more than a how-to book, so well written that I would have read it just for pleasure, even if I hadn't needed the detailed and clear practical instruction. Very historically informative. Reminds me of some of the best cookbooks: the reading of it is as much fun as making the recipes.
Book Description
In recent years, mid-century modern furniture, glass, ceramics, and textiles have become hugely popular among those who appreciate the stylish contribution these pieces make to the contemporary home. Modern Retro will inspire you to create a look that combines modern classics by such visionaries as the Eameses, Bertoia, and Aalto with thrift-store finds and the best contemporary design. Created by modern classics dealer Andrew Weaving and design commentator Neil Bingham, with photography by Andrew Wood, Modern Retro is not about slavishly recreating a period feel. Instead, it shows how to take the best designs of the 1920s through 1970s and use them throughout your home in a relaxed and individual way, allowing you to make the most of the gloriously eclectic forms, colors, and patterns available.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring and accessible.......2002-06-14
Since I already have a few 50-60's modern pieces in my home, I purchased this book to give me a better idea of what other items were out there. The designs have great style, but seem totally achievable. Using this book as a guide and source of inspiration you could decorate your home in a comfortable yet stylish manner. Some of the pieces they show are pricey, while others are probably inexpensive flea market finds. The author gives you enough information that you could go out into the flea markets and antique/second hand shops and make some sound purchase. It is a shame the book is less than 200 pages. I would have loved to see more.
Expensive style without the costs!.......2001-12-30
This book is amazing. It teaches you to create a contemporary looking home, without the outrageous costs of designer furnishings. It tells you what to look for at thrift stores, and how to use what you already have. I would highly reccommend this book to anyone even just a little bit interested in design! It's truly great.
Inspirational book.......2000-11-15
For a book on home furnishings, this book certainly contains enough good pictures to get you inspired. It is also well researched and written and actually covers quite a lot of ground inspite of its rather small size at 144 pages. In fact, this book is so good, I only wish there was a bigger version of it, with even more wonderful examples of lovely interiors filled with retro furniture. This book covers interior styles from the Art Deco period to the 1970s. It does mention a little of the famous designers such as Noguchi, Eames, Nelson, etc., but its primary purpose is to teach you about how to achieve the modern retro look, with discussions on living rooms, kitchens, work rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, furniture, lighting and accessories. What I find particularly useful is the list of retailers specializing in original pieces of furniture, a list of retailers and manufacturers of modern re-issues, and a list of architects and designers whose work had been featured in the book. Be warned though, that the list consists mostly of companies in the United Kingdom. This book is definitely a good buy for enthusiasts of retro furniture.

Customer Reviews:
Not that special.......2007-01-09
I was expecting some really creative and clever ideas. Instead, although nice looking, space saving and custom treatments, mostly I've seen before and are pretty traditional compared to what I had in mind.
Full of ideas and inspiration.......2006-05-18
I love homes that have their own unique character and charm. This book provides ideas and suggestions for adding character to your home, even if right now it's only your typical cookie-cutter home. Great photos and inspiration. Well written.
Get character even in a spec home.......2006-03-03
This book is very specific in how to add character, why it works, and specifics on using each detail. Finding older homes in our area is difficult in our price range, but we'll definitely be able to add those delightful touches in a new spec house. Great book.

Customer Reviews:
No other interior design book is needed........2007-07-15
Finally an interior design book that gives information you can use and not just pretty pictures. I have now boxed up all of my other interior design books to give away because everything I need to know is in this one book. The book gives you rules you can use. For example, the actual measurements you should allow for free space around a bed, sofa and dining table. She gives the distance you should have between conversation areas, side tables and lamp heights required for specific areas. Each step in the book is well written and provides answers to all you will need to know to make your home beautiful.
An Organized Approach to Decorating.......2006-04-12
This beautifully illustrated book of interior designs shows the work of Cecil Hayes. She has a style all her own which may or may not be to your liking. However, in creating these designs she has come up with a list of nine steps in the decorating process:
Get to Know Your Space
Create Your Personal Look Book
Create a Furniture Plan
Decorate One Layer at a Time
Mix Styles and Periods
Choose Your Colors
Use a Variety of Fabric Patterns and Textures
Decorate with Art and Accessories
Evaluate Your Finished Design.
The rooms pictured here are heavily decorated, Ms. Hayes is clearly not of the minimalist school of decorating. This is, of course a matter of personal choice and is part of her nine steps - Create Your Personal Look Book.
This book is one that's filled with ideas. Even if they don't appeal to you, you'll be able to see concepts in decorating that you haven't seen before. and the steps she describes make very good sense.
A RENOWN INTERIOR DESIGNER TAKES YOU BY THE HAND AND TEACHES HER PROCESS!.......2006-02-14
If you really want to understand the "why" behind interior design, this is the book for you. The book is written in an easy, informative style and Cecil goes out of her way to make it understandable for the average person. Even after working for her for several years, I learned sooo much from this book that its incredible. Cecil's teachning background is readily apparent and she shares the secret of her personal design process wholeheartedly!
Anyone who wants to create their own one-of-a-kind interior design, is contemplating a career in interior design, or who is generally interested in interior design will find this book inspirational. Humorous anecdoes, professional wisdom, and the life lessons of a celebrated interior designer, all rolled into a teaching text on interior design. Highly, highly recommended!

Book Description
Now widely recognized as one of the early twentieth century's most extraordinary photographers, Tina Modotti was remembered until recently more for her relationship to Edward Weston than for her own strong, sensuous work. This comprehensively produced biography, now published for the first time in paperback, captures in over 100 striking photographs and a sympathetic, meticulously researched text the fullness of a life wholly committed to political, personal, and artistic freedom. From her early days in Hollywood as a silent film actress, through the creative, fruitful years in Mexico with Weston and her political exile in 1930s Europe, to her sudden death in 1942, Tina Modotti's courage, clear vision, and dramatic flair made her one of the most internationally controversial and widely admired artistic figures of her day. Perceptive and authoritative, Tina Modotti lifts the veil on a fragile life of iron.
Book Description
I was born in a small city near the East Sea,
when the Great Cultural Revolution began.
My name is Little Green,
my country Zhong Guo, the Middle Kingdom.
When I was ten years old,
our leader had died and the revolution ended.
And this is how I remember it.
When Chun Yu was born in a small city in China, she was born into a country in revolution. The streets were filled with roaming Red Guards, the walls were covered with slogans, and reeducation meetings were held in all workplaces. Every family faced danger and humiliation, even the youngest children.
Shortly after Chun's birth, her beloved father was sent to a peasant village in the countryside to be reeducated in the ways of Chairman Mao. Chun and her brother stayed behind with their mother, who taught in a country middle school where Mao's Little Red Book was a part of every child's education. Chun Yu's young life was witness to a country in turmoil, struggle, and revolution -- the only life she knew.
This first-person memoir of a child's view of the Chinese Cultural Revolution is a stunning account of a country in crisis and a testimony to the spirit of the individual -- no matter how young or how innocent.
Customer Reviews:
this is a great book.......2007-08-29
It is great to have a look into Mao's China from the eyes of a child. I agree with many of the good things said, and just want to say this is a great book. Lyric, and a child's view, and great insight.
Little Green a Thoughtful Corrective to Mao-Era Propaganda.......2005-03-30
Chun Yu's "Little Green" is a great corrective to much of the highly effective propaganda that emanated from China during Mao Tse-Dong's Cultural Revolution. Chun Yu has achieved this with a unique voice and with a unique literary form that is unusually poetic and that is not in itself a propaganda piece.
I believe that "Little Green" should be classified as suitable for all ages. While children will undoubtedly enjoy and learn from "Little Green," I think it ought more properly to be included with literature also intended for adults.
A New Voice.......2005-03-26
This book powerfully tells what life was truly like under Mao and his cohort. Chun Yu brings a new voice with an amazing ability to enable the reader to imagine life inside China during the Cultural Revolution.
This is a fresh and new voice to the history of that era.
PS I am not a kid although submitting a review as a child is easier as there is no password stuff to climb through.
A beautifully written story - not just for young readers.......2005-03-26
It's one thing to read the history of China's Cultural Revolution, quite another to see it through the eyes of a little girl who lived through it. In "Little Green," Chun Yu, born the year the Cultural Revolution began (1966), chronicles the first ten years of her life, from the revolution's inception to its ending with Mao's death.
What's startling about "Little Green" - the title comes from Yu's childhood nickname - is not just the vivid clarity of her memories but the beauty of her words. Written in verse, the book has the crystalline luminosity of Peter Matthiessen's prose and David Whyte's poetry. On one page Yu will speak eloquently of the gift of a blue silk ribbon; on another she'll share her pain - without being overly sentimental - at having her family's garden torn out after the state decided that private gardens were capitalistic.
"After a whole spring and early summer
of planting and watering,
the tomatoes were just starting to ripen under the green leaves.
Some melon flowers were still blooming on the fence.
The biggest melons had grown to the size of my little fists.
The sunflowers along the roadside
were only a couple of feet tall,
with tender yellow flowers following the sun around.
Nainai [Grandma] sighed.
'It hurts the conscience to destroy these crops.
What crime did the plants commit?' "
In this slender volume, Yu shows how her family is affected by the Cultural Revolution. Her mother, a teacher, becomes a target of the anti-intellectual movement; her father is sent for several years to a reeducation camp. In "We Saw Baba Only Twice a Year," Yu writes:
"Baba lived in May Seventh Cadre School,
where he was being reeducated.
The cadre school could only be reached by boat,
slowly moved by a long bamboo stick.
It took a whole day each way.
We saw Baba only twice a year,
in the summertime
and Chinese New Year.
After not seeing him for a long time,
it felt so strange to call him 'Baba' again."
The cover quote, from Maxine Hong Kingston, calls "Little Green" a "miracle" which initially sounded a bit over the top. But as I read the book and learned Yu's story, I didn't find this to be an exaggeration. For someone who learned English as an adult and spent much of her time in this country studying science, "Little Green," written with elegant simplicity in English, truly is miraculous.
I found "Little Green" so enjoyable that I began rationing it, reading just a few pages a night, to make it last. Thankfully, this is the first book of a trilogy, and Yu says she's already finished the second volume. I'll eagerly await its publication. Until then, I'll return often to Little Green's clear, bright lines.
Little Green is a wondrous work of art! .......2005-03-21
Little Green is a wondrous work of art, like an ancient Chinese painting brought forward into modern time. Where a Western painter might fill up the entire canvas with paint, traditional Chinese painters used sparse brush strokes to vividly illuminate the very essence of their subject. So does Chun Yu use her poetry to bring to life the world of a ten year old child in the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Like the unfolding of a Chinese scroll, to read her verse is to journey across the landscape of that time. We see her family, other children, revolutionaries and "counter-revolutionaries," political struggle meetings, war trainings, cold streams, warm meals, forbidden ancient poetry, and the sound of snowflakes falling past her ear.
Little Green is suitable for all ages, both children and adults. From her readings in the San Francisco bay area, I also learned that this book is the first in a coming trilogy. I give it five stars.
