limited and disappointing!.......2006-07-14
This guide does not seem as comprehensive as the Moon guides I have used in the past. Accomodations and food sections are particularly limited especially when there are plenty of choices, such as in Lake City, and guidance would be useful. Hiking sections were also limited and recommendations sparse. All in all, the guide was disappointing!
Great unique travel book!.......2006-05-08
I am delighted to finally have a travel book that is easily readable by an author who has "been there, done that." Steve Knopper shares personal experiences and opinions with a sense of humor, an expertise as a writer, and first-hand knowledge of the areas he describes. He has grown up in Colorado, and his love and appreciation for this astoundingly beautiful state is apparent on every page. Unlike other travel books, where I feel the author has never visited the places, Knopper makes me want to experience a Colorado holiday from his unique perspective.
Great Guide Book.......2006-05-08
I've lived in Colorado most of my life. I found this guidebook to be refreshing, interesting, and a good resource -- whether you are visiting for the first time or (like me) already know quite a bit about the state.
Moon Destroys its Reputation.......2006-05-01
It's strange that Moon Handbooks, with a hard-earned reputation for comprehensive and authoritative guides to historical sites and traveler resources, would publish this book. They've eliminated the solid text of previous Colorado editions and started over with a new author who seems to have very little interest in or comprehension of what he is seeing. Just for one example, the entry on Cortez is riddled with bizarre errors and nonsequiturs. It says that the Anasazi built Hovenweep "10,000 years ago" (off by about 9,200 years), that the Anasazi structures at Mesa Verde "resemble hotels"(it's merely centuries wrong about Mesa Verde dates), that the white town of Cortez is--somehow or other--sacred to Native Americans, and that the Four Corners is "a symbolic area", whatever that is supposed to mean. The author eliminates mention of the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, one of America's major archaeological institutions, but he adds a description of the local golf course right down to the annoying trees on hole 5. This seems quite typical of the values of this author, who is mainly interested in upscale resorts and hip entertainment. He entirely eliminates Moon's usually long list of mom-and-pop motels and offers only luxury hotels and B&Bs. He seems to think that camping is for some sub-species called "roughing-it types" and lists very few campgrounds. He even seems to look down on mere Holiday Inns. He goes out of his way to snub ordinary towns (Cortez has--horrors--trailer parks) and seems worried that his hip image will be ruined if he is caught enjoying an ordinary hamburger in an ordinary cafe. The author seems to think that the value of travel is measured by how much money you can spend on luxury resorts and expensive restaurants and shopping. Aspen seems to be his idea of paradise. The author writes for Rolling Stone magazine and might know a lot about the hip nightlife of Aspen or Boulder, but this isn't why most people visit Colorado, and any Colorado guidebook should show better appreciation for wilderness experience or history or Native American culture. This book should have been subtitled "The Rich Status-Seeking Party Animal's Guide to Conspicuous Consumption in Colorado".

This title is lacking in content compared to the other Moon Handbooks and is focused on winter sports and shopping. If you are interested in other activities or seasons, you may be dissapointed.

OK, the author is more into mountain biking and skiing rather than hiking. Not as good as moon press's Arizona book and northern California book
Colorado Handbook.......2000-05-06
Like all Moon Publishing books this one offers a detailed account of Colorado. With everything from Geology to the best watering hole in the town you may be he heading for. Great back road trips, camping, and fishing info. It is a must if you are planning to visit the state!

Ready to take over the world?.......1999-12-18
What do Herod Antipus, Kublai Kahn, Idi Amin, Lenin, Henry VIII, Nero and Ramses II The Great all have in common? First they are all despots and second along with about 600 others they are in this book.
In just over 330 page you'll be treated to the amassed amount of 600 plus despots, tyrants and would be tyrants trying to take over. The authors have listed each name and a brief description of the person.
While the book is made for quick reference, I was engrossed in the book for over two hours. The facts and photos included are excellent and you might be surprised to find out who is in the book.
You'll read about Cyrus the Great, Peter the Great, Napoleon, Hitler and so many, many more. For a great gift for those in school or for the additional reference material for the term paper this is a great place to start.

Joe Devine's Collecting Royal Copley Plus Royal Windsor & Spaulding Identification And Value Guide packs in a lovely photo gallery of pieces with history and values. Royal Copley is the main focus of the presentation, though some Windsor and Spaulding pieces are presented, and about 85% of everything made at Spaulding was Royal Copley. Exploring the swampy woods of Georgia's Chatham County some years ago, searching out places to photograph, Jack Leigh turned his car onto an obscure dirt road winding farther into the forest. Finally driving into a clearing on the banks of the Ogeechee, Leigh found himself at Uncle Shed's Fishing Camp, and at the beginning of what would be a two-year discovery of the river and its people, a chronicle in images and words stretching from the Ogeechee's headwaters in Greene County to marsh flats near the Atlantic Ocean.
In his photographs and text, Leigh introduces such river natives as George Altman, standing knee-deep in water and reeling out fishing stories as he flicks his line into a shaded area beneath a fallen tree; and Jack Mikell, Sr., whose life on the river is told in the array of frying pans that hang on the wall behind him and in his recollections of long nights tending moonshine stills in backwater swamps. Leigh tells of the many stories the river holds—-of the Muck Runners, Louisville men who each winter slog through swamps and deadfalls two hundred miles to Savannah; of Frank Cox, whose journey down river, taken in numerous pieces with as many reluctant partners, fulfilled a childhood dream; and of a woman's baptism in Warren County, at which beads of anointing oil mingled with the cold water of the rushing river.
At Uncle Shed's Fishing Camp, as tales of fish fries and courtship conjure up more than fifty years on the Ogeechee, the camera ranges across the clearing, capturing the pattern of river life in the faded letters of a hand-painted sign; in the weathered face of camp matriarch Bessie Dickerson; and in the scattered flowerpots, lawn chairs, ceramic swans, and gravestone that lie cluttered against a cabin wall. Recording the wild ramblings and lazy progress of the Ogeechee, the quiet rituals and raucous stories of its people, Jack Leigh chronicles the course of lives that run with the current of the river.
