5 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2005-07-01

I love the colorful names of orchids (green adder's mouth, ghost orchid, gentian noddingcaps). This guide covers native and naturalized orchids in Florida plus introduced, escaped and waifs.
The detailed descriptions (1 page each) and multiple photos of each orchid were very helpful. The description gives the origin, details to identify the plant, the leaves, the flower, habitat, flowering period and a paragraph of additional information relating to the rarity of a plant. A map shows the counties where it might be found, plus a drawing of the plant is included.
It contains handy resources like a 9-page checklist, orchid statistics, a glossary, 16 pages clearing up confusion over misapplied names and synonyms, and a bibliography.

3 out of 5 stars Orchids of Florida.......2002-06-06

The book is well done and put together. The only issues I noted are that the author does not give photogrpahic credit to several contributors. Least of which is Carlyle Luer. The author has used several copied photos right from Dr. Luers "Native Orchids of Florida" without permission or proper credit.

Some of the taxonomic changes and listing are not as accurate as they could be, but the overall work is complete and covers all known species to occur in Florida. One helpful note, future books should follow the Luer style for various stories and all photos should have dates taken and county listings.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a guide to Florida orchids.......2002-04-14

I had been hoping for a Florida orchid book for a long time to help me understand and identify native orchids. This book goes beyond my expectations. It is wonderfully thorough, with each species covered on two full pages. One page describes the distribution, identifying characteristics, habitat, flowering period, and has a Florida range map and plant illustration. The facing page has several photographs of the plant, showing growing habit, flower close-up, and different color forms. I particularly appreciate the range maps identifying all the Florida counties where the plant has been found. I was able to easily go through the book and make a list of all the species found in my area. The photos are very good and the variety of scales really helps. Reading this guide, it seems like there are orchids all around just waiting for the trained eye to notice them. A must have for your field guide collection.

    Book Description

A hiking guide to one of the most beautiful and diverse ecosystems in the country.

What Florida's landscape lacks in topography, it makes up for in diversity, ranging from temperate Appalachian-style forests to tangled tropical jungles. Here hikers enjoy a broad range of habitats and wildlife that only Hawaii and California surpass. Trails pass through desert-like scrub islands, jungle-like hydric hammocks, and deep, dark bayous where giant cypress trees rise out of inky water. Footpaths range through salt marshes, river floodplains, and along coastal dunes and beaches with sparkling white sand. Florida has the world's only Everglades, and the delightful landforms of karst—disappearing lakes and streams, yawning sinkholes lush with ferns, and the world's largest concentration of first-magnitude springs. More than 1,200 contiguous miles of the Florida National Scenic Trail stretch from the beaches of Pensacola, at the western edge of the Panhandle, to the Big Cypress Swamp in the Everglades.

The hikes in this new guide to the heart of the peninsula range in length from 1 mile to 43.3 miles. Each hike description includes a topographic map, mile-by-mile directions, and information on distance, difficulty, time, and terrain. 40 black & white photographs, 51 maps, index.

5 out of 5 stars "50 Hikes in Central Florida".......2003-01-10

This book is a terrific guide to the real Florida. The directions (both to the trailheads and on the trails) are easy to follow and accurate. The descriptions include interesting bits about flora, fauna, and geography as well as the occasional snippet of Florida history. It's an outstanding book for someone wondering how to get into the woods in central Florida; even those who hike central Florida regularly will find some new gems to explore. This is a great guidebook!

5 out of 5 stars Great Hiking Guide!.......2002-12-17

This is a hiking guide that has it all. Not only does it give clear directions on how to find the trails and precise information such as length and degree of difficulty, it includes lyrical narratives of the beautiful and interesting sights you will see as you hike.
For those who think of Central Florida as a land of theme parks and T-shirt shops, this book will open their eyes to the natural beauty that still exists, just minutes away from the tourist attractions.

          Product Description

The photographic essay "EL ARTE DE LA GUITARRA" by María Isabel López Gonzalvez was presented on April 17, 2006 in Cartagena, Spain with an exhibition of the original large-format photographs which are the basis for the book. The book is a beautiful photographic testimony of the care and hard work involved in producing a hand crafted guitar. Maria Isabel made repeated visits to the workshop of John Ray in Granada over a period of two years in an effort to capture the essence of the guitar maker and his work. The photographs, in black and white, are accompanied by short captions in Spanish and English. For more information please see: http://free.000angels.com/artofguitar/libro.htm

                        Book Description

The Labrador retriever has epitomized the term "versatile gun dog" for decades -- long before it became North America's most popular pet breed. Whether launching themslelves from a duck blind into the skim ice of a winter marsh or rooting a gaudy, cackling ring-necked pheasant out of a tangle of honeysuckle, working Labs consistently display courage, persistence, and style. The twenty-one stories in this anthology, put together by Gun Dog magazine field editor Joe Arnette, celebrate these qualities in stories that inspire joy, sadness, admiration, and remembrance. Contributors include the best-known writers in the gun-dog business, including E. Donnall Thomas, Robert F. Jones, the late Gene Hill, Ted Lundrigan, Michael McIntosh, the late Richard Wolters, and Arnette himself.

                            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A thouroughly enjoyable reference book!.......2001-05-26

For me, doing my homework before starting a project is a natural occurence. I'm so glad I started with this book! As a novice, I wanted a comprehensive guide that wasn't too overwhelming. The KISS Guide to Gardening helped me to envision, understand, and prevent possible gardening problems before one bulb had been planted. The chapters on watering problems and too much/too little sun probably saved several dozen of my flowers. I especially loved the chapter on Garden Pests and how to get rid of them. All suggestions encourage natural, organic problem-solvers before other options. The chapters are laid out beautifully and the ease of reference - from the Contents to the chapter color-coding on the page's edges - make this a reference manual I plan to keep forever. There are also breakdowns of plant types and most popular flowers - giving the best case scenarious for each one's growth. Fun bits of trivia and a sense of humor keep this from being too serious. A great find and a great price here at Amazon!

                              Book Description

The Fragments of the Methodists is a new attempt to give a first corpus of its kind. Manuela Tecusan has collected, edited, and translated all the surviving testimonials concerning one of the most influential 'schools' or doctrines of medicine in late antiquity: Methodism.

This volume contains the fragments accompanied by a textual apparatus and facing English translation. The introduction provides a guide to the collection. The second volume presents a commentary to all fragments and two glossaries of medical and pharmacological terms. Apart from its intrinsic novelty, this material affords fresh insights into broad topics of contemporary concern, such as the relation between philosophy and medicine, problems of biomedical ethics, the epistemological foundations of the sciences, the role of causal explanation - explored here in their fascinating historical set-up. Many of the long texts included in the Methodist collection become now available in a translation for the first time.

                                  Book Description

The first civil government in Florissant was established in 1786, three years before the United States adopted its constitution and George Washington was elected the country's first president. French farmers and fur trappers looked upon the land and called it the “Valle Fleurissant”—which is to say, “the flowering or fertile valley.” The community remained small until after World War II. Between 1950 and 1980, the population grew from 3,737 to 76,754. Today the community strives to preserve its proud heritage and build on the strength of its diverse population. The historic images in this book illustrate the city's founding and development, from the first French settlers to the post World War II building boom to the exciting new city of today.

                                    Book Description

Though the city of St. Louis is located on the Missouri side of the Mississippi River, for the railroads, the St. Louis Gateway extends into Illinois, north and south along both sides of the river. Two factors conspired against St. Louis's aspiration to become the preeminent rail center of the 19th-century American Midwest: there was no bridge across the Mississippi, and Missouri's loyalty to the Union during the Civil War was suspect. Chicago beat out St. Louis to attain the region's top railroad billing. Fast forward to the 1970s, when the Gateway Arch, dedicated in 1968, redefined the St. Louis riverfront and when the St. Louis Union Station closed to rail service. The 1970s was a decade of railroad debuts—Burlington Northern, Illinois Central Gulf, Family Lines—and a decade of railroad demises—Rock Island and Frisco. It signaled the end of a century of rail domination of the American transportation scene.

                                      Book Description

The southwest corner of Missouri made fortunes for many early settlers to the area, and created an economic boom rivaling the Gold Rush. In this new book, author Jerry Pryor creates a pictorial history of the efforts of those who staked everything on the chance of striking a fortune underground in the land west of the Mississippi. ÝÝAs early as the first Native American occupation of the region, mining for ore had always been an essential aspect of life in southwestern Missouri. In the mid-19th century, mining towns sprung up like weeds, with early wanderers hearing tales of fortunes made, sometimes accidentally, while plowing fields rich in ore. Joplin, Webb City, Carterville, and Oronogo all have origins in the mining camps that eventually grew into booming towns and cities. Soon this rich belt of mining land fostered a variety of lifestyles, ranging from the poor manís attempt to support his family under difficult and frightening conditions, to entrepreneurs such as Alfred H. Rogers, who organized the Southwest Missouri Electric Railway Company, the largest inter-city system west of the Mississippi. ÝÝ

                                          Book Description

By the mid-1860s, the St. Louis neighborhood of Benton Park West was already self-sufficient, boasting its own carpenters and dairymen, blacksmith and midwife. While it was a working-class community, many residents owned their own businesses and built beautiful homes that still stand today. Author Edna Campos Gravenhorst takes readers on four separate walking tours of the historic district, highlighting such buildings as the 1860s Eyermann home, the stately Herold mansion, the 1893 Gravois Planing Mill, and the Cherokee Brewery.

When the Frisco Railway decided to move its Missouri hub from Pierce City in 1887, Monett began its growth from a sleepy town into one bustling with stores, churches, and hotels, all around the depot. By the early 20th century, Monett was home to a minor-league baseball team, hosted the Monett Chautauqua, and saw presidents campaigning via the rails. A crowd of 10,000 watched local pharmacist and photographer Logan McKee fly a plane during the 1911 Fourth of July celebration. Citizens moved from

horse-drawn buggies to cars, and LeRoy Jeffries, member of a prominent pioneer family, gave up his grocery store for a gas station in 1923. The city was ready for the imprint M. E. Gillioz was to place through his construction company and civic contributions. While the Gillioz Theater is gone, Monett citizens still use the old National Guard armory (now a recreation center) and a bank building, among others. By the time the Frisco left in the mid-1950s, Monett had survived regular flooding of Kelly Creek and several fires that burned important buildings and had embraced its more diverse agricultural and manufacturing economy.

                                                  Book Description

The city of Richmond Heights, located in St. Louis County, is a community rich in history. Incorporated in 1913, Richmond Heights was established as a residential suburb of St Louis. Early residents included the McCutcheon, Barron, Niesen, Grove, Brennan, Gay, Buehning, and DeBolt families. The introduction of modern highways and commerce altered the city's physical character, which prompted this publication. The authors hope this book encourages the citizens of Richmond Heights—and others—to embrace the city's history and promote preservation of its historic resources.
