Great guide, lots of photos.......2006-02-28

This is a well-rounded book, with information about history, the people, the sights, the geography, and lots of really good photos. It was especially valuable to me because I was going to both Laos and Cambodia and didn't want to have a book for each of them. If you're looking for a guide that will tell you how to get from A to B, where to stay, where to eat, and so forth, you should probably look to Lonely Planet or Rough Guide. I was on a very small tour, so I didn't need those details and it met my needs very well.

Insight Guides are useful as both travel guides and picture books.The info is short but concise and the wonderful color pics give you a really nice idea about what the destination spot looks like ( or looked like,as the books are also good for memory/photo albums). This volume is very useful for the traveler to the little known countries of Laos and Cambodia as it covers all areas of both countries and not just the big cities and main attractions. I especially found the info on coastal Cambodia interesting as it's hard to find detail on this beautiful place in other travel books. A must for the Asia traveler....

A Search For The Perfect Dog.......2000-01-10

I found this little book to be simple, but written with much love and very heartwarming. Have your tissues ready ! I also loved the black and white photos of the author's dogs that he's met so far on his journey. Their expressions were priceless, especially of the author as a child with his guardian angel, "Rusty". He made me want to volunteer at my local Humane Society, if only to keep a lonely dog company for a while. This book can easily be read in one sitting. If you own a dog, it will definitely make you want to give it an extra big hug, even if it's not perfect ! Thanks Gary for a delightfully sensitive, and caring book about man's(and woman's )best friend !

My wife and I lost our beloved dog recently. We were loaned this book by a close friend in hopes it would help us, it has. We have been amazed at how some one else has the same love for dogs that we share. It has helped us let go of some of the pain and focus on all that he taught and shared with us. This is a book for all who love life and dogs.

"The Bible" for collectors of Vernonware........2006-03-23

This book is a must have for anyone interested in collecting any of the numerous shapes and/or patterns of pottery made by Vernon Kilns. I won't repeat what's said above in the book description or product details, but I will add that many years of obvious painstaking research has culminated in Maxine Nelson's 4th book on the subject.

I had no idea what a challenge it would be to complete a collection of dinnerware in just ONE of the patterns ("Gingham", a green and yellow plaid design) that was made. Even with this book in hand you will never be 100% sure of all the pieces that exist in whatever pattern you're attempting to collect. In my opinion, the "not knowing" is part of the challenge that only serves to make collecting this truly versatile line of wares that much more fun, interesting, and rewarding.

By the way, this book has 320 pages, not 192 as listed above. Sadly, this book is already out of print. However, at the time of this writing quite a few copies are still available.

If you're a fanatic, you'll want to find copies of the newsletter "Vernon Views" printed from 1981 through 2003 by Pat Faux and Nancy Scadeberg, but we'll save that for another time...

A steam engine chugs along the Mall. The Knights Templar parade down an unpaved F Street. Workmen finish an arch at the new Library of Congress building. And the paddleboats are lining up for a concert at the Watergate Barge.

In Washington Seen Fredric Miller and Howard Gillette bring together nearly four hundred unique photographs from the Gilded Age to the Great Society. Throughout, the focus is not on streets and monuments but on the complex relationships among the people of Washington -- men and women, black and white -- and the way they worked and lived.

At the second district police station, black faces among the white reveal that in 1878 racial integration had come -- temporarily -- to the nation's capital. (Sixty-five years later, marchers would demand the hiring of black bus drivers to help win the "fight against fascism.") At the Treasury Department in 1910, men in white shirts work as engravers while women count the newly printed currency; in an adjacent photo, a lone black man bends over a washtub in the "Cuspidor Washing and Sterilizing Room" of the Capitol.

Everywhere in these photographs is a richness of detail that captures a bygone moment with startling precision. Ancient tools and pipes surround a workman in the "plumbing room" somewhere in the depths of the Capitol. A pair of young girls stand, smiling, in a Depression-era back alley, every brick and paving stone sharp and clear. Assembly line workers in an eerily lighted loft peer out from behind a row of artificial limbs. A boy leans down for a better look at the well-stocked candy counter of a black-owned grocery store.

Here are Washingtonians at home and at work, at restaurant tables and lunch counters, in schools and churches, dancing the jitterbug and going to the movies, cheering the Redskins, the Senators, and the Homestead Greys. In the accompanying text, Miller and Gillette invite readers to enter into an intimate "conversation with the past," offering insightful commentary on the images of people whose faces cannot fail to captivate.
