I bought this book to prepare ahead of time for my new german shepherd... and this book is absolutely outstanding! It mentally and physically helps prepare you before your GS comes home (and even after). All the information was very helpful... this book doesn't miss a thing. It also provides you with outside resources for information on finding breeders, trainers, etc. The chapters are also easy to navigate if you choose to only read specific sections. The best part is that the content focuses on positive-reinforcement training methods as opposed to negative-reinforcement. You can't beat the price for the quality of information this book provides!
Best German Shepherd Book for new owners.......2007-07-30
I bought several dog books in preparation for my German Shepherd puppy. This by far was the best at giving practical information and advice. It's in a very easy to read format. And, it's a great value too! I don't think any new GSD owner can go wrong with this book. After showing it to my breeder, she even bought her own copy.
This really is a COMPLETE guide to GSDs.......2007-01-09
I have two GSDs and have read quite a few GSD books. To date, I think that this one is the best. It does not go too in depth about any one topic, but rather gives the main points about about several topics. I also read several tidbits of info that I actually didn't already know (and I thought I knew it all by now!).

For a beginner gardener as I am it was a joy to have bought this book. Very well illustrated. In fact you see so well the gardens'ideas that reading the book is just a complement to help you plant your garden. Well written and very clear. True to its title: step-by-step. I am glad I bought it and I do recommend it. It makes possible to have a dream garden in your house.

This book has a lot of maintenance type projects in addition to basic carpentry. Some projects seem more advanced to me.
Basic Carpentry.......2003-01-13
This book is exactly what is claims to be - Basic Carpentry.
Mostly geared for the novice, it will clearly explain many basic improvement and repair tasks around the house and workshop. It does NOT go into more advanced techniques, just gives you the basics.
It's a must have, and an excellent starting place FOR THE UNINITIATED. Covering what tools to start with as well as what tools you will one day want to have - what they're used for and better still what to look for when you buy them (what do you look for in a router? They suggest no less than 1 hp...) Don't waste money on features you don't need - they give you an idea of what's important and what's not.
Other books in the series work well together with little duplicate info - giving the basic homeowner/apartment dweller the basic knowledge to improve their surroundings.
If you already have a firm grasp on this subject - stay away, a more advanced book will be more usefull!
Definatly makes a great gift for a first time homeowner (and we all know one of those)!
An essential book for every enthusiastic homeowner.......2000-04-09
I discovered this book when I visited the Better Homes and Garden's website; they have select items from the Step-By-Step Basic Carpentry that I found very useful. As a matter of fact, I found them better than my orange 1-2-3 home improvement "bible" that I also own. It contains detailed procedures for every task, including caveats, hints and gotchas. It is well illustrated and well written. I recommended to all my friends and everyone found it to be useful and easy to follow. Happy home improvement.

Just the basics.......2005-05-12
This book is great for beginners. It is explains different styles and has illustrations as well as descriptions. The techniques it uses are valid. My only concern was that this book tends to over simplify things. Taking cuttings is one example. The book suggests that this is the best way to get stock. Anyone that has ever tried to take cuttings realizes the falacy in that.
Bonsai Basics.......2001-11-16
As a bonsai enthusiast (NOT master!), I have been designing bonsai for several years, and have acquired a few dozen books on the subject. Personally, I was unimpressed with this book. While it had some valid information, I noticed incorrect techniques photographed (trees with wire cutting in to the bark, or having wire scars). I didn't find the book particularly helpful.
Authoritative, yet condescending, and culturally uninformed.......1997-05-09
Surprisingly enough, this book was written by two Westerners, for Westerners. Upon reading this book, one wonders why Orientals are praised in numerous passages as metaphysical "self-questing" masters, (Yoda?)and in as many places, Europeans and Westerners are referred to as catagorically "ignorant." Once one moves beyond these condescending and culturally myopic statements, the book contains much useful information. By the way, Bonsai is an art that is dying out in Japan, and there are few, if any, young people who care anything about it, much less respect it as an art form. Having lived all over Japan during the ten years that I was there, I am of the opinion that young Japanese people are as ignorant of their own culture as the authors claim Americans and Europeans are. And actually, the Americans and Europeans that I came into contact with knew more about Japanese history, customs and culture than the Japanese themselves. Might I suggest sticking to the topic of Bonsai and leaving your reversed cultural biases out of print

Step-by-Step Means Just That.......2000-05-02
It's been more than four years since my day lilies and irises have been thinned. They no longer bloom, so I steeled myself to thin them. The problem: how do I do it? I checked every gardening book in my collection but none alleviated my fear of destroying the poor little darlings. What was even worse is that they hadn't bloomed in so long, I couldn't remember which plants were day lilies, daffodils or irises. This book takes the reader by the hand and shows them, step by step, how to do a variety of basic gardening tasks. Each task is lavishly illustrated with color photographs. After perusing the section on dividing the perennials, I took my garden fork and spade and pulled up my daylilies and irises without fear. I even pointed out the characteristic root structures to my husband. Little did he know my expertise was only hours old.
The book is divided by seasons, which also helps the beginner figure out which tasks to do when. The book is not afraid to be too basic. It even shows various garden tools and describes what to do with them. Also great for rank novices is the section on how to read a plant tag.
Overall the tone is fun and informative. It combines topics like how to make a garlic braid with how and where to store the fall produce. It includes such whimsies as how to plant an edible flower garden. Its section on how to plant bare root plants would have saved me the cost of the book had I bought the book last year.
Finally, the book can be used in many areas of the country. When I moved from the West to the Midwest, many of my books were useless. When I moved again to the South, I had another slew of problems adjusting for the assumptions in my gardening books. You won't have that problem with this book.
A helpful new book on gardening basics.......2000-04-15
I love to garden and peruse gardening books but I haven't bought many over the years because the nicely illustrated ones are often pretty pricey. This one has the photographic quality of coffee table gardening books but is very affordable. I bought it because I need to separate day lillies and that was noted as a subject covered. It is along with a lot of other information, much of it about flowers. There is a very helpful section on designing different types of gardens and I know from past mistakes how important it is to have a definite design in mind before you put in the first plants. Also having had a failure with strawberries I appreciated the coverage given this topic. Lots of good examples of plant supports are shown. There are helpful check lists and clear cut illustrations of a variety of gardening procedures e.g. planting bare root roses, pruning etc. I wish the authors had addressed watering techniques. They recommend soaker hoses but say nothing further. The book is a little limited in scope but gardening is such a huge topic that you can't expect one book to cover everything and you almost can't have too many books on the basics. This one is well photographed, helpful, affordable and will inspire you to pick up your trowel.

Book Description
The theme of divine judgement has often been treated, but usually with a concentration on one it its two main aspects: either that which is seen in the present life and in history or that which is believed to occur only after death. This new study seeks to combine the two aspects. It also tries to cover the whole spectrum of the ancient religions. Special attention is given to Israel, Greece, and Egypt. Israel's neighbours are also considered, and there are discussions of Judaism, Christianity, and Zoroastrianism. In several areas, notably in Egypt and Israel, it is shown that punishment in this life is sometimes presented as a fate that man brings upon himself rather than as one imposed by God, though always against a moral background derived from religion. The origins of judgement after death in the Judaeo-Christian tradition are examined in some detail and elements are traced to Egyptian, Zoroastrian, and Judaic sources.
