Outstanding Maui Guide Book.......2004-06-26

This book contains a plethora of information about Hawaii. It has a break down of each part of the Island, activities to go do, and even lists shop names for making reservations or locating once you get to the island. My wife and I have found this book to be very helpful in our planning.

15 Years, 3 Editions, Never Missed A Beat.......2003-12-29

My wife and I have used the Moon: Maui book over three different editions from 1985 until relocating permanently in '99. One copy has been to the island three times, lent to friends. There is no part of the island left uncovered, and authors provide good insight on how to be pleasant guest and not get yourself into unpleasant situations.

This is quite unlike "Maui Revealed", which is quickly becoming "Maui Reviled" for locals. This perception is driven by a considerable increase in trespassing on private property to and bodily waste at spots that used to be local favorites, caused in large part by masses of visitors cluching M.R.

Stick with the Moon: Maui book, and you'll avoid a lot of unnecessary stink eye.

Will Make Your Trip Soo Much More Enjoyable.......2002-10-13

You're spending 1,000-2,000 bucks to go to Maui -- go ahead and spend 20 bucks to have your own in-depth personal tourguide.

This handbook helped make for one of the best vacations of my life. The "insider" information is absolutely indispensible. For instance, there are many, many beaches on Maui, but there are many, many different kinds of beaches. Some with murky water. Some with huge waves. Some not navigable unless you swim beyond volcanic rocks. But there are one or two absolutely perfect beachs. And the Moon Handbook explains it. My girlfriend and I found the beach in front of the Sheraton at Ka'anapali to be the best all-aorund beach. We waded out into the calm waters and swam with sea turtles, right there in front of the Sheraton. This handbook explains, though the "little" details like, parking is difficult near the Sheraton so where to park, what the rates are, even shortcuts between buildings and such. This kind of info is just completely impossible to get anywhere else.

There are discussions of the personalities of various snorkle tour boat crews -- from adventurous, to laid-back. Some snorkle boats provide lunch, others don't. All this info is in the Moon Handbook.

We checked out Haleakala Mountain and Red Hill. With the handbook, we found how to get to Iao Needle. We found which Luau Party was the best for us, etc. Which restaurants to go to. Where to shop in Lahaina. The Sugar Cane Train for an easy-going afternoon. A drive out by the blow-holes on the NW end of the island.

I highly recommend this book before going to Maui. If you don't feel like shelling out 20 bucks, another option is always looking into your local library. Most good public libraries carry Moon Handbooks and they're absolutely free. A must before traveling to Maui, the Valley Island! (the 6th edition also includes info on the islands of Lana'i across the Auau Channel and Moloka'i)

A Real Guidebook.......2001-12-04

This book is written for intelligent and inquisitive tourists who want to really understand what Mauai is all about. It outshines Mauai Revealed by 100%. I found myself using it every day as it offered a far more indepth look at places not found in any other tourist publication. If flash and hype are not your style, buy this book. Good index, well written, excellent maps. It had plenty of things to do to keep me amazed every day of my two week vacation.

Our Number Two Maui Guide.......2001-01-28

Until Andrew Doughty's "Maui Revealed" was released, this Moon handbook was the best you could get. We used it on our first trip to Maui. Like other Moon Handbooks, it is rich in history and background info, but the practical detail can't compare to "Maui Revealed." We now use this Moon Handbook mainly as a supplement for historical background -- still useful but not our first source. (Most other Maui guides are superficial rubbish.)

Were Thomas Winpenny to write a sequel to his book, Manhattan Bridge, The Troubled Story of a New York Monument, the title would no doubt be, Manhattan Bridge has Fallen Down. The bridge built over the East River and completed in 1909 is, according to statistics, the bridge with the highest number structural dangers. Dr. Winpenny explores the history behind the Manhattan Bridge, its company, The Phoenix Bridge Company, and the bridge's upkeep and use since its opening to public use.

The first half of the book explores the circumstances behind building the bridge. Dr. Winpenny is quick to note that the bridge builders of Manhattan bridge were using a novel approach called "deflection theory" in the building of the Manhattan bridge. "Deflection theory," according to Dr. Winpenny, resulted in bridges that were lighter and supposedly more flexible; but it also resulted in bridges that later would crack and strain under the heavy traffic of subway trains that rumbled across. Another circumstance behind the building of the bridge is its relevance in light of the bridge collapse on the St. Lawrence and near Quebec, where 75 bridge builders plummeted to their deaths. Dr Winpenny suggests that because the Quebec Bridge was a Phoenix Bridge project, the company was willing to undertake the Manhattan bridge even with low profit prospects and cooperation with the bridge union, IAB&SIW. In short, the Phoenix Bridge company used the building of the Manhattan bridge as a means of redeeming their reputation. In what may be considered a slight digression, Dr. Winpenny paints the terroristic "dynamiting" attacks of IAB&SIW members on the property of bridge corporations, which included the Phoenix Bridge Company. In any case, Dr. Winpenny illustrates the national power (or at least zeal) of the bridge unions.

The latter half of Dr. Winpenny's book focuses on the upkeep and use of the Manhattan Bridge since it was completed in 1909. One of the first issues explored is the problem with subway trains on the bridge. The trains were heavy, and moreover they ran on the outside lanes of the bridge, which caused more stress to the bridge than were the trains run on the center lanes. An interesting fact that Dr. Winpenny points out is that, while it makes common sense that the trains should run on the inside lanes, this was not an option to the bridge builders; the costs to rearrange the two entrance ends of the bridge to accommodate these lane configurations was too expensive. Dr. Winpenny also explores the bridge v. tunnel controversy; and he effectively debunks as a post hoc fallacy the belief, held especially by John Ward, that bridges cause hindered growth and devalued property values on each end of the bridge. One figure that Dr. Winpenny highlights as important to the maintenance of the Manhattan Bridge is Robert Moses. This individual is mostly responsible for reconfiguring the ends of the Manhattan bridge to facilitate transportation to and from nearby interstates. In the final section of his book Dr. Winpenny highlights the decrepitude of the Manhattan Bridge. Through natural wear and tear, the effects of weather, and the effects of automobile accidents and other violent movements, the bridge is slowly falling apart. The history since the 1950's is aptly described by Winpenny as "patch, patch, patch." The only problem: is the patching really effective. Despite the numerous efforts to refurnish the bridge to its original structural integrity (whatever that might be), major fissures and cracks have been found on the bridge. The bridge is presently probably the most dangerous bridge in Manhattan in terms of its likelihood of collapsing.

In short, Dr. Winpenny's book is a good exploration of the construction and future problems of the Manhattan Bridge. The historical circumstances surrounding the bridge construction are also well described. Perhaps some additional information on the day-by-day construction problems of building the Manhattan Bridge is called for; but overall Dr. Winpenny gives an excellent account of the Manhattan Bridge and its present infirmities.

This book is a must for anyone who collects plastic toys. While it is a great source for identification info and a fair price guide, it's real value is as a coffee table book to show your friends. The photography is beautiful and really brings back memories. Don't miss buying a copy while they are still available.

Despite the title, doesn't really address burnout.......2003-09-03

The back cover text begins, "Fight fatigue--the natural healling way!" That is a far more accurate description of the contents than the title is. The entire book is devoted to causes and types of fatigue, and natural ways to combat fatigue. It is almost useless for dealing with burnout. It might be useful for someone whose problem is fatigue. Or then again, it might not: Taking the self-test informed me that my problem was an "immune deficiency," probably related to "intestinal fungus" (systemic candida infection), and that I should treat it by taking "certain combnations of bacteria cultures" (it didn't bother to say which ones, but I'm assuming acidophilus and bifidus), having "colon hydrotherapy," and "taking an alternating warm-and-cold shower on a daily basis." Yeah, I'll keep all that in mind while I read a better book on burnout.

I love this book!!.......2006-01-14

This book is great, it tells many different stories from many different latinos. It also has some spanish childrens songs that even my mom knew! My favorite part of this book is the "Dichos", they have trancended generations from mexicanos to mexican americans....

Not what I expected.......2003-06-07

To be honest, I expected more folktales and traditional stories from Mexico, but that's not what this is. There are about 100 contributors, each giving a personal story relating to the subject of a particular chapter. There are very few who did this for more than one chapter. This is the main component of the book. This is why I found it a hard book to read cover to cover. Since each chapter is dedicated to a particular virtue, and has a combination of "dichos," and personal stories, all of which are very short - no more than one to two pages long. While one of the reviewers found this to be a good thing, I found it distracting. Another problem is that the "dichos" are often translations of English/American sayings. While there are some sayings that seem to be universal - touch wood, for instance - I find it hard to believe that so many are.
What I was looking for was something to help me remember some of the "dichos" or stories that my mother and abuelita used, now that I have a son. I was hoping to keep some of the same sabor in our house that I grew up with. While I find this book a good additional to my library, it's not quite what I expected or hoped for and it's not better than what I expected.

Useful and inspiring.......2002-12-10

I'm a college instructor (UCLA Extension, Loyola Marymount University Extension, The Art Institute of California - Los Angeles, and Brooks College).

In some classes, 40% of my students are Hispanic.

I read the stories in this book to them, and they find them very inspiring.

Given the short attention span of students nowadays, the fact that Nava's stories are short and to the point makes them that much more impactful.

A Must Have for Parents and Educators!!!.......2001-07-22

This book is great! I have been reading the stories to my middle school class of ESL students. They love it. The lessons on Respect, Honor, and Values hit home. We have posted dichos all over our room. I especially like that this book shows Hispanic people who keep thier values and culture can be rich, famous, and respected. Wonderful!!

You don't have to be Hispanic to love this book. On these pages you will find insight and inspiration for everyone. It gives an Anglo like me an indepth view of a community filled with wisdom and bursting with great stories. I highly recommend it.

This book is a valuable reference tool for children in their early teens, whether for a report or simply for knowledge. It is a comprehensive research effort by both authors to inform the reader about accomplished Mexican Americans, their culture and careers. In addition, this book has special touches, such as personal photos of the featured people. I definately recommend this book!
