Not Very Useful.......2004-07-01

I guess this book is useful if you want to know such insightful things as it gets hot in the summer in Washington DC and kids are not in school, or, that it gets very cold in the winter (imagine that). Other gems include that you can take a cab from the airport to your hotel, and to wear comfortable shoes if you plan to do a lot of walking. I picked this up before a trip to the nation's capitol, and was underwhelmed with the information. Luckily one of my buddies had a different much more comprehensive guide to the Washington DC, so we opted to use that.

Don't Be A Dummy. Pick A Better Travel Guide........2004-07-01

I've read through several Washington DC. travel guides, and this one was, by far, the worst. It's very far from comprehensive, and spent far too much time on things like "How to get to Washington, DC", and very little time talking about hotels (a negligently small listing), restaurants and nightlife (a few paragraphs). Book is black and white with no color photos, no color maps (so no different colors for each of the metro lines), actually very little in the way of maps, and no photos to speak of either. Poor. Frommers Washington DC guide is a far better investment. Even Fodors is better. Possibly the weekend section of the Washington Post would be more useful than this paperweight.

My family just returned from a wonderful trip to DC. As a mom who always researches our trips, I have bought a lot of books that help give info and advice on what to do and see on trips. This was one of the better ones I saw in the stores on DC. After purchasing it and reading through it, I found that the info was acurate and up to date. It gave a lot of tips that I wouldn't have known any other way. It saved us time and money. It was also a neat way to share info with my kids while we were at different monuments that didn't have tour guides available. I am a fan of the "Dummies" books!

I'm the editor of this book (and hired Tom Price to write it) so I know it VERY well. Mr. Price is a longtime DC resident, and welcomes the reader into his home town in a way that is both informative and funny.

Price covers a lot of ground in a book that's not a long slog: he hits the high points like the new Spy Museum, compiles lists of attractons for people who love museums, architecture, the outdoors, and gives the pros and cons of visiting our nation's capital in each season.

DC is a momumental city, and it can be daunting to fit it into a short visit, but you CAN make the most of your time there with Price's expert guidance.

The Book That May Put Me Out Of Work.......2001-06-06

As a concierge at one of D.C.'s finest hotels, I was shocked and humbled by the wealth of knowledge in this book that I should have already known, but didn't. While there have been some minor changes in regards to some restaurants and hotels, the book was remarkably accurate with its information. I have two copies; one at home for visiting friends and one at my desk for quick reference. Anyone working in the travel industry should keep this nearby for an essential job tool.

The scaffolding of scholarship and cogency with which this book supports its archeological, textual, and linguistic data has outdistanced prior attempts at similar concatenations. That is to say, great scholars such as Glen Kimball and Ahmed Osman must reassess, or at least be prepared to modify their take on this period. The almost monotone calculus of the tome permits itself to unwind logically, creating the needed perspective for one who can appreiate the assessment this region's dynastic history and its relation to the old testament, along with a critical analyis and clarification of the Hebrew language and its underpinnings. This book is a great cornerstone--a touchstone starting point to further diverse but related topics such as Atlantis, genetic manipulation, middle eastern politics and culture, later esoteric traditions, specious modern elitism, meaningful historical anaylis of that region (as well as that of the British Isles), the occult, the Nag Hammadi texts, the Dead Sea scrolls, and perhaps for dimensional or ET phenomena. However, this book does not delve into these oft related topics...its brilliant simplicity being part and parcel of its elegance.

A historical look at the culture of the Hebrew people.......2003-10-09

The way in which "The Ancient Hebrews" volume of the Cultures of the Past series is different from others is that the illustrations are mostly paintings rather than archaeological artifacts, which is particularly telling as to what centuries of dispute over the Holy Land have done to such treasures. In this volume Kenny Mann basically provides a historical perspective on the people and history of the Bible.

Mann follows the standard five chapter format of the series in examining the history, culture, religion, daily life, and legends of the Jewish people: (1) In the Beginning deals with their history, from first arriving in the Promised Land to the triumph of the Romans; (2) A Living Faith covers their belief system, from God and the Prophets to the Torah; (3) The Tellers of the Tales provides a concise look at the Hebrew Bible and the Jewish tradition of religious scholarship as their cultural history; (4) The Universal Way examines the relationship between beliefs and society; and (5) Past,, Present, and Future deals with the legacy of the Hebrews from the idea of trade as a tool for survival in the Arab world to the nation of Israel.

Obviously the chief attraction of this book for young readers is how it goes beyond the Bible to provide a look at the history and culture of the Hebrew people. The back of the book includes a time line of the history of the ancient Hebrews, a glossary, books for further reading, a bibliography, and an index. Other volumes in this excellent series look at not only the major civilizations of the past, such as the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, but also at civilizations that usually do not get near as much treatment in your standard World History textbook such as the Ancient African Kingdom of Kush, the Celts of Northern Europe, and India's Gupta Dynasty.

This book takes a beginning loom knitter to the next level. It reviews some basic techniques, then adds 10 new stitches with projects to complete. The new stiches are adaptations of handknit stitches like bobbles and shells. Also included is an introduction to reading knit charts. A useful book for those who are tired of plain hats and scarves.

Wonderful Book!.......2007-05-22

I love this book. It's so helpful. It gives patterns that are a little more difficult then "Learn to Knit on Circle Looms" so it's great for a person who is a step up from beginner. I have both books and they're both great. This one can help you in creating your own pattern too since you are also learning stitches. You could make a hat look a bunch of different ways just from the stitches to learn. If you want something to help you dress up your projects a bit, I would highly recommend.

Anne brings loom knitting to the next level. This book adds many new interesting techniques and projects to a loom knitters bag of tricks and is also appropriate for beginners. I love the lattice top hat and make it more often than the standard tube hat AND I can start and finish it in an evening. This is a must-have for your loom knitting library.

The photos truly are lovely, but I'm so glad I didn't buy based on reviews - I read a library copy first.

It does start out with some good advice. The Preface talks about choosing your gardening style and doing a bit of planning before digging. The Introduction talks about matching the plant to the site, and urges readers to ask local extension services or nurseries for advice. Invaluable info for a novice gardener, but I don't believe it was ever repeated later in the book.

Alas, the book then takes a nasty turn and descends into the pit of Martha's garden and Martha's terms. Rock powders - perhaps that's the New England name for soil amendments, but you'll have trouble if you ask for them in nurseries around here (unless they've read the book). Her lists of vegetables, perennials, and annuals must be the ones she favors growing in her zone; quite a few of them wouldn't do well in other parts of the country. You'll have to get ideas for your zone from some other book, because they're not in 101.

A lot of basic info is touched upon but not explained very well; for instance, one page is devoted to watering, yet three pages give instructions for casting your very own garden trough.

I didn't much care for her sources at the back of the book, either.

If you are truely a beginner at gardening, this book would be ok but it seems to only scratch the surface. I've read other gardening books and have discovered and benefited more from them than this one. I know it's tempting to buy a book because it says that its for the beginner but in this case, I'd advise beginners to seek more comprehensive books on the topic. They may sound intimidating but in the end, they will make you a better gardener and work for you long after you've moved on from the beginner stage. I abandoned this book after I learned more.

If your just starting out, this is a wonderful reference.......2001-08-21

Don't be fooled by the size of this book. An abundance of information is inside. It is essentially a step by step guide to creating your first garden. If you are more experienced this is probably not the book for you. But for the novice (like me), there aren't many better.

I just love this book. Look, if you've never gardened before, this is a great book to get you started. And, if you have acres of gardens, this book can help you trouble shoot as well. I actually took the raised bed garden idea and made my own this spring with my husband. Our book is covered with dirt and grease spots from all of our referencing!!! We run to it if we are unsure of where to plant a certain veggie or how long it takes to grow a certain seed. This is a good investment.

Bought this book based on the reviews only. It has good photos, but beyond that, I thought is was fluff. Guess I should have known from the title Gardening 101. Maybe it should have been Garden - SQUARE 1. Your results my vary - just my opinion.

Gardens in Pastels.......2001-06-26

If you are a beginner, this would be the book for you. It is simply written. The book covers the basics of pastel and limited information on perspective, color theory, and atmospheric distance. I was disappointed in the book because for the money spent, I expected an adult book. The book is a thin soft cover paperback. It would be great for a 12-15 year old. Any other pastel book would cover the same basics and more. Gardens in Pastel would be a good checklist/reminder for painting on location.

If you are new to gardening or love reading about how to make leaf mold or want to learn how to recycle carrot peels and eggshells, then this is your book. I loved the quick introduction to topics like photosynthesis, pollination and other topics of interest that reminded me of my favorite Biology class in high school.

Learn To Garden will also teach you how to:

My favorite part of the book was actually how to make leaf mold. It is fascinating to think that you can make nourishing items by letting things decay. I will never look at raking leaves in the same way again. My father was an excellent gardener when we lived in Africa and I observed the way he made compost piles and nourished the dry sandy soil. Soon, we had lovely vegetables and were happily enjoying fried squash blossoms and other such gourmet luxuries.

When I was a child, the garden was were I was the happiest, getting lost amongst the corn, shelling peas on the back steps and digging up carrots to see if they were ready to eat. If you are trying to recreate some childhood memories or even just create a beautiful space to eat breakfast, this book has many ideas. This book gave me a lot of ideas, but now I'm going to have to think about moving because there is an "secret garden" idea in this book on page 77 that will need more than a deck!

What I miss most about my childhood home, is the scent of the soil and the fresh peaches we used to pick to make ice cream. The authors also discuss fruit trees, growing strawberries and those types of delicious topics.

If you have cats and have wanted to grow an herb garden, a two-tiered plant stand works very well. I'm finally growing herbs high enough off the ground so the cats don't nibble on them. Planting catnip in the lower tier is the next idea...

Meg Herd's informative book on nature activities is project oriented and is written recipe-style. The projects are divided according to seasons. The organization is easy to understand. This book illustrates projects for just about anyone. There are informational sidebars that provide gardening tips and fun facts about nature.

This book is appropriate for ages 5 or 6 through 12 (listed as just 9-12). It is odd, however that most of the children in the photo illustrations are younger (top age is about 7 for interior photos and the cover shows toddlers). I would not recommend this book for those under 5.

As you come to words he/she recognizes, encourage your child to read along with you. Read the directions aloud in the same way and explain the activities in terms your child understands. Talk about the story and the activities. These conversations not only strengthen your child's confidence but also help build his/her language skills. Provide your child with plenty of support and encouragement. Some activities may be easier or more difficult, depending upon your child's age and skill level. Keep in mind that your child is practicing but may not master every skill at this age of his/her development. Take cues from your child. Work at a comfortable pace, and work only as long as your child is interested in the activities. End your work session when you see signs that your child is tiring.
