    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Oceanic navigation classic.......2004-07-27

The most complete study of early navigation I have come across. The author does a fantastic job of comparing the different styles of landfinding as used by the Pacific islanders. Lewis brings the knowledge and experience of an accomplished western sailor and navigator to his studies, and in doing so is able compare and contrast ancient and modern techniques. A scholarly study of primitive navigation, the book is not always an easy read, however for the reader looking for a complete comparison this is the volume to have.

4 out of 5 stars An academic book by a knowledgable navigator.......2002-04-23

This book is written by an academic. I don't necessarily mean this in a negative sense. The author has done a very thorough research on the topic and presented his findings. The effect is a book that can be called a comprehensive treatment as far as it can be done given that the practictioners are disappearing fast.
The downside is that it can send you to sleep as the author systematically compares how the navigational techniques are practiced in the various island groups.

The strength of the book is not only its thoroughness but also the fact that the author is a skilled sailor who has gone on trips using these techniques. This makes the material so much more authentic, because the reader can relate how effective these skills are and yet how much practice they require.

The author provides commentary on many practices and relates them to our modern day knowledge. An example was their ability to recognize the impact of sub surface currents, something that is today a rather specialist piece of knowledge not available to the everyday sailor.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent on Pacific Voyaging.......1999-12-07

David Lewis has zig-zaged the Pacific in modern yachts and traditional canoes. His broad experience and long resarch, using his own and many schoolars data, has made this a good analysis and documentation of the extremly impressing and interesting phenomenon of ancient and present voyaging in the Pacific. Others, specially anthropologists fieldworking in the Central Carolines of Micronesia, had written about the presently used Micronesian voyaging system, others less throughly about the forgotten polynesian, but Lewis mangage to give a synthesis of the technologies and some of the social aspects of traditional voyaging in the Pacific

5 out of 5 stars The Old Way of Navigation Preserved!.......1999-10-02

    A triumph! Lewis's "hands-on" investigation of ancient
sailing tchniques in the Pacific now includes a description of a
renaissance in celestial navigation in Polynesia. The old way, the way
of passing on knowledge of sighting stars and zenith stars, is once
again being passed on from one generation to another.

5 out of 5 stars Polynesian navigation over great distances w/o instruments.......1999-06-04

"We, The Navigators" is one of the first books written about polynesian navigation over great distances without benefit of any instruments except the senses of the navigators. The polynesians steered by the stars, sun, swell patterns, wind, birds, clouds, phosphorescence in the sea. "The Navigators" began training as soon as they were weened and had to memorize thousands of factors to enable then to reach islands that their ancestors had been traveling to for generations. This book is a great source for both scholars and sailors. However; be warned that if you don't have some knowledge of sailing and navigation you may not fully appreciate "We, the Navigators"

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Course Review!.......2007-09-07

I am a global history teacher and use this book with my students when it comes time to review. The book includes an overview of all the material from both Global I & II, plus old Regents exams. For the price, it can't be beat!

2 out of 5 stars What good is a Review Book with No Answers to the Questions.......2007-05-22

This book is suppose to be a review book for the NYS regents. It has 6 practice regents exams but no answers. Many of the practice questions in the book have no answers at all. It's usefulness is therefore extremely limited as a study guide.

This book is a great studying tool for high schoolers taking global history. It summarizes the course in simple easy to understand terms, and yet challenges the student. I think this is a sure fire way of helping global history students raiseing there averages and helping them pass the class.

                                Book Description

Urban Jungle is a book for people who have a garden but do not consider themselves to be gardeners. Tackling the subject in clear language, it is written for the kind of busy person who has a range of interests, is sophisticated about style, knowledgeable about many subjects--but just happens to be an ignoramus when it comes to growing plants. Expert Monty Don reassures the reader, proving that no special skills or abilities are needed to garden well--other than a love of beauty and a desire to make the garden a part of your home. The book is filled with practical tips and advice, and yet is iconoclastic, opinionated, and free of horticultural jargon. A totally different kind of gardening guide, Urban Jungle amply demonstrates that gardening can be both easy and fun. A must for every new gardener. Monty Don is a gardening journalist and the author of the award-winning book, The Sensuous Garden.

                                      Book Description

Long ago a man named Artaban and three companions observed a new star in the night sky. They knew it signified the birth of a great teacher--someone who would bring change and hope to the world. There and then they decided to follow the star to pay homage to the newborn child. But along the way Artaban stops to help those in need, and his journey takes him far longer than he could have dreamed. Lovingly written and stunningly illustrated, here is a Christmas story unlike any other, about one man's lifelong search for virtue. The Fourth Wise Man truly captures the real meaning of Christmas and is sure to be a holiday favorite for all ages. Susan Summers is a former teacher who shared the story of The Fourth Wise Man with her students for many years, and finally decided to write it down. Jackie Morris has illustrated several books, including Out of the Ark: Stories from the World's Religions, which Publishers Weekly praised for its joyous watercolors.

5 out of 5 stars Simple and yet powerful.......2006-02-09

The Bible tells of the three wise men, Magi, who came from the East, following a star to the newly born King of the Jews. But, there was a fourth wise man, Artaban, who sold all that he had, and acquired three jewels, to give as his gift to the babe. But, when Artaban stops to help a sick man, he is delayed and misses accompanying the other three, and so he must set off alone. This is the story of the fourth wise man, who seeks the King of the Jews, and finds him in the most unlikely of places.

This is an absolutely wonderful story. It takes the famous 1896 story, written by Henry Van Dyke (1852-1933), and puts it in simple and yet powerful words which can be read by the younger reader. But, this isn't just a kids' book. Indeed, the author wrote an excellent parable for all Christians, telling a powerful story in an easy-to-understand manner. I loved the story, and Jackie Morris's excellent illustrations.

I am glad to have this book, and highly recommend it to everyone!

5 out of 5 stars Cut Throught the Christmas Clutter.......2005-03-09

How about something fresh and new to cut through some of the Christmas clutter that seems to spring up around the holiday each year and must always be pruned away before the season can be properly celebrated and enjoyed ?

How about a powerful and moving story that has stood the test of time for a hundred years and is available as a children's book?

How about a meaningful and inspiring tale that the whole family can enjoy together, a fictional story that helps to put the real story of Christmas into its proper historical and cultural context, and expose some of its true meaning?

Henry van Dyke (1852-1933) graduated from Princeton in 1873, was pastor of the Brick Presbyterian Church in New York City (1883-99), professor of English literature at Princeton (1899-1923), and U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands (1913-16). He wrote the well known hymn Ode To Joy (Joyful, Joyful). He also wrote The Story of the Other Wise Man which was originally published in 1895.

He wrote how Artaban desperately desired to travel with the other three wise men to worship and adore the Christ Child, but delayed his quest to bring his gifts to the newborn king in order to help a dying man, save the life of a baby, and rescue a young girl from slavery. Artaban finally loses every one of his gifts but finds and is found by the King of kings. Henry Van Dyke wrote a touching story of someone who spends his life doing good and searching for truth and beauty.

Susan Summers was a teacher in England. During an epiphany service at a small church she first encountered Henry Van Dyke's story. She was so impressed and moved by it that she began to use it each year as a school assembly topic. After leaving teaching she rewrote the story for children, and dedicated it to her former students.

Jackie Morris created the beautiful watercolor illustrations that accompany the text. They include large panoramic vistas and moving portraits.

5 out of 5 stars Not for tots.......2003-01-01

This is a great book, especially for anyone trying to teach the real meaning of christmas. It is in the format of a child's book, but its language and subject matter (including the murder of all babies under Herod) is pretty advanced, so it's appropriate for kids who would normally read chapter books: I'd say 7+ years.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Story.......2002-05-15

This book should be on the gift list for everyone you know! The original story was written by Henry Van Dyke (1852-1933). Susan Summers has rewritten and brought forth such gorgeous illustrations of a very special tale! No holiday season should go by without bringing this wonderful book out to read in a cozy gathering around the fireplace.

The Fourth Wise Man tells the story of Artaban who had originally planned to journey to Bethlehem with the other three wisemen to pay homage to the new King of the Jews but was delayed by his acts of kindness to others along the way. He does miss the birth of Jesus but continues a lifelong search of the King with a most wonderful journey and blissful end.

This is one of my all time favorites for any season and always brings tears to my eyes to think of the beauty of Artaban's life. Here's what Mr. Van Dyke had to say about his story:
"Who seeks for heaven alone to save his soul May keep the path, but will not reach the goal; While he who walks in love may wander far, Yet God will bring him where the blessed are."

A wonderful addition to a family's library. Reading this book should become a family tradition right along with "Twas the Night Before Christmas"
