A thorough yet readable overview of saguaro cacti.......2003-07-25

This book, published by Arizona Highways, presents a broad yet detailed overview of saguaro cacti. Everything about the cacti, ranging from scientific data to traditional and modern cultural information, has been placed in this book. The text is easy to read yet it answers most questions about cacti, and the pictures are of the high quality expected from Arizona Highways. This book is so good that its photos and information has been incorporated into reference booklets at Saguaro National Park. A good book for both Arizona residents and visitors to own.

Our cactus friends!.......2000-04-14

The first time I visited the Saguaro National Park in Tucson, Arizona, I had dozens of questions about saguaros. I wanted to know why their arms grow down toward the ground sometimes and why some of them have a brown woody bark and why some of them have ripples and what happens to you if you get caught shooting at a saguaro. This book answered all of my questions and then some!

I found out that the arms sometimes start to grow downwards if there is a cold spell right as the arms start to grow. Only very old saguaros get the woody bark and they become more like a regular tree as they age. The ripples are caused by droughts and rainy years during growth cycles and you'll be fined very heavily if you shoot at a saguaro because they are protected under state law.

It's a thin, paperback book and it's written in a manner that it would be interesting to children as well as to adults but it's definitely aimed at an older reader. Tons of beautiful desert scenes!

Where You Want To Go For One-Stop Presentation Skills.......2006-06-26

I've known Diane DiResta's work for many years. She is the "Queen of Presentations". Her book provides a no-nonsense approach to the art of clear, precise and meaningful communications to audiences large and small. I've taught Presentation Skills courses myself for over 25 years in the corporate world and I refer to her works in almost a "biblical" sense. She knows what she's saying. She's been there, she's done that! Great primer.

A practical and useful book.......2006-03-20

Another reviewer said it is not often that a book lives up to its title: especially with words like 'power' and 'pizzaz' as part of the promise. This book certainly did for me. It is not full of jargon. It is not full of pictures and distraction. What it does have it clear ideas, simply given that you can immediately put into practise.
The book covers basics like dealing with nerves as well as advanced issues like presenting with an interpreter. This makes it a great choice for all levels of presenter.
A great addition to anyone's library for a small dollar purchase.

General Advices About Public Speech.......2006-01-27

The book is about how you should prepare to public speech. It talks about how to setup a stage, how to work with a michrophone, how to walk in a stage and the known advices as 'know your audience' and 'rehearse'.

I think this might be good reading if you lack any clue about the process but for people that need to improve their presentation skills it's not worth. Also there's almost nothing on tips for preparing slides (the most common media, I think).

The author keeps giving infinite acronyms where she wants to work on topics (almost all topic groups gets its own) and it's really annoying.

Great Clarity Brought to Fundamentals.......2005-06-08

I have read hundreds and hundreds of books on how to give presentations. Diresta adds to the genre through sheer force of simple clarity. She cuts through the clutter and helps people focus on the fundamentals they need to go from a poor to good speaker and from a good to great presenter. This book should be in the library of any serious student of speaking.

Knockout's a knockout with my clients.......2005-04-16

Having been in the communication skill business the past 15 years myself, I am glad to have such a good and user-friendly reference as this book to recommend to my clients - from all backgrounds and industries. It covers every area, and then some.
I have a shelf full of other presentation skill books, but Knockout Presentations is still the one I reference and pass along. Should be on every business person's desk, in libraries, and in college book stores. Good bang for the buck.

A new culture in the management of changes.......2000-04-04

In this book is developed the way to manage changes in engineering processes, demonstrating the power of sumulation really. Hansen has obtained the wanted theory-practice binomial, which is not common in business literature. I think that a phrase that summarizes properly his work in this book is: "if an engineer doesn't measure, can't control anything", although surely Hansen would say "business man". instead of "engineer".

This review is to show my sincere gratitude to FASTPLANET for making the Workshop books available (Quick Start and Power User). The books provide excellent information in a concise manner. They provide excellent formats that are easy to follow. They provide excellent exercises. They make a complicated and powerful software easy.

Excellent for instructor led training. Just as the description says, the book has many hands on exercises, and covers all necessary topics to take a student from the beginner level to a more advanced stage. I always get excellent evaluations from my students when I teach this class.

I was very unhappy with the lack of detailed information in this book. I purchased this book thinking that there would be more information than a basic concept of some of the more advanced topics in Crystal but was dissapointed to find out that this book doesn't go into enough detail on the subjects I was interested in such as Web integration. I'm returning this book as a very dissapointed reader.

Unprofessional; Inaccessible.......2002-11-11

I was required to read this book for a course I'm currently taking in college. I have seldom seen such a sloppy, unprofessional, inaccessible work such as I did upon reading this particular work.

The content of the narrative itself is unremarkable; Hart recounts the tale of Yamileth and her family members, virtually all of whom are undocumented (a euphemism for 'illegal') immigrants in the United States.

I saw no compelling reasons whatsoever for the existence of this book. One of the hallmarks of documentary nonfiction is ostensibly objectivity, a professional detachment from the subject. There is none of that here. Hart is herself involved intimately with Yamileth's life, and liberally narrates her own actions throughout the course of the text. Hart's continued non-intervention (and in fact, implicit encouragement) of the numerous acts of illegal immigration throughout the text is unsettling, if not outright disturbing.

Hart maintains a unnecessarily loyal relationship with the oral history she performs; the salient narrative is presented entirely in extremely unnecessary quotation marks, apparently in an effort to bring about a sense of intimacy. This effort, unfortunately, fails miserably. I found the text immensely inaccessible, and the slavish devotion to verbatim dictation extremely off-putting. I saw no reason whatsoever for Hart's act of essentially presenting an annotated transcription of her interview. My only hypothesis would be laziness, but again, Hart's gratuitous editorial commentary appears to contradict that particular possibility.

Given the paucity of compelling subject matter (Yamileth's story is neither unique nor extraordinary), Hart deserves some measure of acknowledgement for not only writing this book, but also for getting it published.

Had Hart chosen a more objective, narrative format (The Autobiography of Malcolm X, another text I read in the same course, is a superb example), her message would have been vastly more credible, as well as entertaining to read. Hart's narrative seems forced; Hart's numerous editorial comments lend an air of artificiality, and give a sense of desperation, or 'padding the text,' if you will.

Hart lacks the academic credentials for conducting oral history projects, and this fact is readily evident throughout the text. The narrative is in fact extremely boring, as a great deal of text is wasted on the trivial details of Yamileth's daily life. Yamileth herself comes across as a strange character; many of the actions she takes throughout the text would very kindly be described as 'misguided' if not outright stupid. The greatest example of this is her decision to leave Oregon (where she had a satisfying job, and her son was truly happy), and return to live with her manipulative sister in Los Angeles. In Los Angeles, she is jobless and unhappy, and her son even more so. Perhaps even more confusing is her ultimate decision to return to Nicaragua, which in some senses proves to be even worse than Los Angeles. Yamileth comes across as consistently indecisive, as well as impractical. Her dithering would be acceptable were she only by herself, but her continued decisions to deny her son happiness and stability in life reek of irresponsibility, as well as juvenility.

In short, Yamileth doesn't know what she wants with life, and in her continued half-fulfilled plans she manages to drag her children down with her. Similarly, Hart doesn't know what she wants to do with this book. I in fact fail to see why anybody would read this out of their own volition. To anyone else taking the same class as I am now (I wish to remain anonymous, but suffice to say I attend a prestigious school in Northern California) - don't worry...it gets better from here on.

Yamileth: A Sojourner.......1999-12-21

I highly recommend this book. It is a joy to read the story of a Nicaraguan lady who makes a journey with members of her family. The destination is the U.S.; the length of stay is short term. As Yamileth will tell you, plans don't always come out the way they were intended. The heroine of the book is a woman, mother, and activist, who has strong family values supported by age old ideals, and who has the courage to live them. The best feature of "Undocumented in L.A." is that it is apolitical. The ideals to which Yamileth is commited and her ways of expressing them are delightful. Through her clear reasoning I was able to have a clearer understanding of the immigrant experience without all the media hype or the outragious editorialization. In the retelling of Yamileth's saga, we are also given an insider's view of foreign relations, inter-racial conflicts, and the divisions of labor in a household where all the occupants are "Undocumented in L. A." "For me the future is thinking about tomorrow and preparing yourself for it. The only heritage a parent can leave is the intellectual preparation of a child... An education allows them to fight for survival, wherever they go. No one can take away that inheritance."--one of Yamileth's values.

Better understanding of plight of illegal immigrants in U.S........1997-10-19

With government looking for ways to limit rights of immigrants in California, Dianne Walta Hart's newest book is very timely. Ms. Hart has culled her interviews with a Nicaraguan woman to tell the immigrant's side of the situation.

Ms. Hart's first book, Thanks to God and the Revolution: The Oral History of a Nicaraguan Family (1990) introduced 4 members of the Lopez family, who described their difficult life in Nicaragua during the revolution. Each family member presented his view of their attempts to survive in a society where employment is difficult to find and the life style is meager. The closeness of the Nicaraguans within their families and neighborhoods is a contrast to the American individualism.

Ten years later, Yamileth and her son Miguel are living as undocumented immigrants in L.A. Through the interviews, their difficulty of survival in a new land is apparent. Again, the close family ties and cultural values weigh heavily on the decisions to be made in their lives.

Ms. Hart's book is an interesting and enlightening account of the daily struggles of a Nicaraguan family. Their personal struggles and the horrible political situation strengthened their devotion to each other and their country.

A strong faith in God and family committment helped each member survive and thrive inspite of adversity.
