A most interesting take on a Wampanoag tradition........1999-08-11
As a window into the life of a Native American tribe that has lived on Cape Cod since long before the Mayflower landed in Plymouth, this book stretches well beyond the Clambake. Beautifully told and photographed, it is the story of how Steven, a Wampanoag Indian boy, is instructed in the tradition of clambaking from his grandfather, Russell Peters. In the process, he learns a great deal about his people, as does the reader.
Fantastic representation of the People of the First light.......1998-07-10
Wampanoag Indians are the original tribe that met the pilgrims and white settlers and it is about time that someone stepped up to the plate and told the truth. A fantastic book about the true Native Americans that are alive and strong today that white america will never embrace and accept the fact that they are beautiful people with a rich culture and heritage

A What and When of Gardening in Ohio.......2007-09-02
A very thorough and well organized guide. It not only tells you what to do but helps you frame the questions you should be asking. Highly recommended.
GREAT GARDENING BOOK.......2007-01-14
I bought my first house in October 05 and I wanted beautiful spring and summer flowers. The property had roses and several other perennials. I needed a book that would help this beginner know what to do with what was already there as well as help me add new plants and flowers. I reviewed 25 gardening books from my library network last spring. This was by far my favorite. It gives you all the things you should know for lots of different flowers and plants and lets you know things you should be doing each month...like plant, prune, fertilize, etc. There are two versions of this book the original and this revised version. The revised costs a little more but there are color pictures in this edition as well as a much better layout in general. To me the newer edition was worth every extra penny and is the only one that I actually purchased out of all the books I reviewed. A must have for any Ohio gardener.

Book Description
Using a digital camera, an electronic tripod, and digital imaging technology, photographer Nick Wood has developed a new way to photograph landscapes and cityscapes, placing the viewer in the center of dramatic 360º panoramas. In 360º Paris, the follow-up to 360º New York and 360º London, Wood uses this revolutionary process to shed new light on one of the world's most beautiful cities.
Including images of well-known landmarks seen with fresh eyes (Notre-Dame, the Louvre, the Champs-Elysées), as well as the singular and distinctive locales visitors love to discover (the home of Godiva chocolates, a market for exotic birds, the "Paris Plage" along the banks of the Seine), 360º Paris is the perfect souvenir of the City of Light. The accompanying CD-ROM includes all of the photographs as QuickTime movies. AUTHOR BIO: Nick Wood is a London-based photographer whose work spans a broad range of subjects, from portraiture to architecture. His particular fascination with 360º photography led to this series of books.

Well done.......2004-11-18
For 85% this book is breathtaking and fascinating. No doubt, it's a new look on usual things in Paris. Paris is my most favorite city in the world and I collect photo albums about it for a long time, thus I can assure you that it will be a good deal to buy it. Its weaknesses: there are usual things (though from unusual point of view, 15% of the book is devoted to some interiors of shops and bars(do you want to pay for product placement?, the disk is attached to this book, which includes some digital panoramas, included in the book (however, my Quick Time Player did not manage to find some files (most interesting I should admit) though it seems they are there).

In this novel of social drama, a casual murder in the small Georgia town of Cotton Point just after World War II and the resulting court case cleave open the ugly divisions of race and class. The man accused of shooting a black girl, a storekeeper named Paris Trout, has no great feeling of guilt, nor fear that the system will fail to work his way. Trout becomes an embarrassment to the polite white society that prefers to hold itself high above such primitive prejudice. But the trial does not allow any hiding from the stark reality of social and racial tensions. Dexter, a former newspaper columnist, is also the author of Deadwood and God's Pocket. Paris Trout won the 1988 National Book Award.
Customer Reviews:
Masterful and Swift.......2007-06-28
Paris Trout is a novel of great speed and explosive power, and it begins this way and never really lets up. It is Dexter's great achievement here: he creates and atmosphere of suspension and tension that can be, at times, nearly unbearable. He has also crafted a character, Paris Trout, so sinister in his dimensions that the reader can not help but feel sorry for him despite his innumerable acts of evil. Trout is both cipher for events and the catalyst for the events themselves in this novel which bears his name. Again, Dexter does this to great effect. Paris Trout is an enigma. His motivations are buried in some deep, hardly discernibly place, moving darkly and with little apparent motivation (beyond some obvious ones, like race hatred and greed for money). Yet this dark spot in the novel is the story's hinge, whereby all the action moves. Dexter creates a novel that is rich in psychological movement and style and at the same time a comment to the colossal errors of American culture at large in the pursuit of justice.
An Almost Good Book.......2007-06-20
The title character of this novel, Paris Trout, is an insane loan shark who keeps all the numbers in his head and his money hidden. He murders a fourteen year-old black girl. The structure of the book is such that the perspective shifts, we see the murder and its aftermath from the POV of Paris Trout, his lawyer, his wife, and several other characters. The social and historical world of the small Southern town in the late 1960s (just a guess, I don't know that the date is ever actually given) is credibly drawn. The characters are complex and interesting. There is tension and some exploration of grand ideas. But in the end, the book comes up short.
The main points of softness in the novel (I would not go so far as to say it is a failure, the novel does work) surround the issue of motivation. The central action of the novel--the murder of Rosie Sayers--and the lesser actions of the novel--Paris Trout's spousal abuse, the condition of their marriage, the lawyer's handling of the murder case--do not seem to be entirely justified.
We never really find out why Paris murders Rosie. Although reasons are given, they all seem to rest on the idea that he is nuts. And in the end, his insanity does not seem like enough of a justification. And at times, his insanity is even negated by his observations. At one point, while explaining to his assistant how to "handle" the Blacks from the community who come to borrow money, he says "they're not different than you and me, that's the secrete." This statement seems to undermine much of his initial motivation for murder.
At other times, Trout demonstrates such calculated and reasoned actions that I often forget that there is anything wrong with him. The narrative reminds us that he is nuts by revisiting the floor of his room which has been covered with glass or it brings us back to some other similar artifact of his insanity.
I could also never figure out why Hanna married Paris. The book attempts to explain it through the pressures of social custom, the desire for companionship, the idea that people change and are apt to never show their true selves during courtship. But in the end, Hanna is such an intelligent, strong, and perceptive character, a character that does not demonstrate weakness; that I find it difficult to believe she would be married to Paris.
Dexter covers all his bases. There are no great failures in the novel. But the characters seem better suited to some smaller action. Their motivations, relationships, and eccentricities are never quite at home with the sodomy and murder that give the novel its shape.
Crooked Government and a Psycho.......2006-09-23
I was assigned to read this book in a Southern Fiction class and for the life of me, I don't understand what I was supposed to get out of it that was beneficial. The book is basically about a white guy who has lent money to a brotha for a car. When the car gets into an accident, the brotha takes the car back to the white guy thinking he's going to repair the car because of the insurance he got. Instead of the car being fixed, this situation turns into a shoot-out, in which conniving lawyers, crooked judges, honest judges, and a guilty town come to honor and loathe the man on trial.
Cons: The principle of the book about racism and how rich people can bypass the government was important to those gullible people who believe that the law is ALWAYS on your side. But, I don't understand why the author even bothered to give the young girl who died a history--when the trial comes, her history becomes irrelevant besides knowing the psycho's wife. The last few chapters were a pointless story about lawyers and judges arresting people for having facial hair; I thought that dumbed the book down quite a bit. It amazes me that there's only one ambulance in the whole town and all the cops are partying, especially in a town that thinks there are so many troublemakers (i.e. blacks) running rampant, so the way this story ended was like "Yeah right." Minus the psycho and his wife, the two other relationships in this book seemed to be in there for decoration because they didn't lend to the story.
Pros: The book was a pageturner, no matter how many scenes were unnecessary. I also liked how honest the author was about how the legal system really works for upper class people. When the safes were opened, what was inside had my mouth on the floor--how CRAZY was that guy?
Not My Problem.......2005-10-19
I read this book non stop coming back from Hawaii. Besides the extreme nature of the subject material the book was entirely gripping and suspenseful. Trout is the kind of character that is capable of doing anything.
The story is about abuse, murder being the worst kind. The book is also about responsibility. Paris Trout is allowed to move from one atrocity to another primarily because no one is willing to take the responsibility of holding Trout accountable.
The book deserved the National Book Award. It succeeds on so many levels. It is a social commentary, a psychological study, a thriller, a story of passion.
I have given this book to many frends; none were disappointed. If you can't stomach the violence, then don't pan the book for that reason. Life isn't always pretty.
"I'm not ashamed. I did what was right.".......2005-06-12
The National Book Award Winner from 1988, _Paris Trout_, based on a real murder and subsequent trial in Milledgeville, Georgia, is a tale of racism, abuse, bribery, injustice, and most of all, arrogance. Paris Trout, a white shopkeeper in Cotton Point, Georgia, makes his own rules, paying little attention to other laws as he sells used cars (on which the rust is hidden under new paint), terrorizes the black community into repaying loans with high interest, and uses trickery to avoid claims on the insurance policies he sells.
When the older brother of 14-year-old Rosie Sayers refuses to pay for a damaged car that Trout has sold and insured but will not fix, Trout and an accomplice decide to use him as an object lesson. Going to Henry Ray's home, Trout shoots little sister Rosie to death and leaves Mary McNutt wounded with four bullets. Surprisingly to Trout, he is put on trial, where people are bribed and the outcome is uncertain, despite eyewitnesses. The crime and trial take up the first half of the book, while the effects of the trial on Trout's defense attorney, Harry Seagraves, the increasing madness of Trout, and the town's growing impatience with Trout's behavior occupy the second half.
Dexter manages to give new life to a story of bigotry which has been told many times, creating in Rosie a particularly vulnerable and sad child, and in Harry Seagraves a lawyer who faces a crossroads--as a lawyer, husband, and man. Paris Trout, however, remains a bigoted stereotype, which reduces important aspects of the plot to "good guys" vs. "bad guys." Dexter's earthy tone creates an atmosphere that vibrates with emotion, however, and his brilliant selection of revealing details create innumerable symbols that develop the themes, poison being the most obvious symbol--Rosie's poisoning by a rabid fox, Hanna Trout's poisoning by physical and sexual abuse, and the town's poisoning by Trout's attitudes.
Dramatic, bloody, and horrifying, this novel shines a spotlight on a town which resembles a large snake that has been run over and is now "stuck to the highway with her own gum." As the town begins to free itself from Paris Trout, his power, and the attitudes he represents, the reader knows that Trout, too, is only a symbol, that real change will take generations. Name dropping abounds!.......2005-05-13
For an excellent view of upper class Paris of the 1890s you can look no further than this exciting and colorfully drawn book. Skinner sketches portraits of the people that darted in and out of the Parisian papers in a very human, dry and truthful touch. From the elegant wits of Boni de Castellane and Robert Montesquei to the Grand Horizontals of Liane de Pougy and La Belle Otero, and the equally fascinating society women in between, you'll be taken on a dazzling world that you won't wish to abandon.
Filled with 20 pictures from the times as well as details on the social round of Belle Epoque Paris--which rivaled that of late Victorian England--this book is a must see for fans of the English period who wish to know what was happening on the other side of the Channel(the French called it "The Sleeve"), as well as longtime Belle Epoque fans.

Baseball Legends Roberto Clemente.......2005-03-25
The book about Roberto Clemente is explaning to you that he can be placed at the top of the greatest baseball players list. I think that if you are a baseball fan you will be able to understand the book a lot more than others. Somehings that you might get out of this book or tha you might learn about this person is that he had an 307 lifetime batting average, he was 15th on the all time home run list, he was one of the best outfeilders to play for the pittsburg pirates, he was one of many to play in the Babe Ruth error, he was also one of the greatest hitters in the league at that time with more than 3000 hits.

Roberto Clemente a Star From Puerta Rico.......2005-03-21
Roberto Clemente was born in Puert Rico. He grew up watching his favorite players play. His favorite player was Monte Irvin. Roberto always had a dream of playing in the majors. When he turned 18 he got his chance to tryout for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He made the team and played in the minors. After one year with the Dodgers he then went to play for Pittsburgh and he ended up playing for them the rest of his career. He then won 12 golden gloves. He won one World Series and ended up with over 3000 career hits , and a batting average of .317. He was a Big League star and an idol for many.
