This book presents a synthesis of the extensive information available on the biology of Bromeliacea, a largely neotropical family of about 2700 described species. The author emphasizes reproductive and vegetative structure, related physiology, ecology, and evolution, rather than floristics and taxonomy. Guiding questions include: Why is this family inordinately successful in arboreal (epiphytic) and other typically stressful habitats and why is this family so important to extensive fauna beyond pollinators and frugivores in the forest canopy? Extraordinary and sometimes novel mechanisms that mediate water balance, tolerance for high and low exposures, and mutualisms with ants have received much study and allow interesting comparisons among plant taxa and help explain why members of this taxon exhibit more adaptive and ecological variety than most other families of flowering plants. This volume concentrates on function and underlying mechanisms, thus it will round out a literature that otherwise mostly ignores basic biology in favor of taxonomy and horticulture.

Excellent Resource - Suffrage London Walking Tour.......2007-01-04

I purchased this book as it had a "suffrage walking tour" of london. It was a very good resource for information that is hard to find elsewhere. It was a little hard to follow while walking - seemed to have to backtrack if you had not preread & recalculated but it still was a valuable resource. Recommended.

Very Interesting.......2006-11-17

Our seven year old son read this book quickly and enjoyed it a great deal. He only likes to read non-fiction and this book had substanitally more text than pictures, which is not usual in non-fiction books aimed at this age range. The book contained lots of information about life in Spain in the Middle Ages that I did not know, including some challenging information about the Spanish Inquisition and the treatment of Jews by the Spaniards of that period.

Rich source of information.......2001-01-27

In 1944, Edith Muller claimed that all the 17 wallpaper groups were found in Alhambra. Unfortunately, her paper only contained 11 of them. Grunbaum and Shephard found two more, and finally in 1987 Perez-Gomez found the missing four.

The book includes pictures and discussions of all the 17 wallpaper groups. Unfortunately, it does not include pictures of the "missing" patterns from Alhambra. For that you have to go to J.M. Montesinos: Classical Tessellations and Three-Manifolds.

This is full of great background, start and training aids for agility.

We found that there is no substitute for class training with pro instruction. But this is useful for those who want to just do it in their backyard, or as prelude to class work.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is training their dog in agility! It doesn't matter if you're just starting or are advanced, this book will give you some great tips on forming good agility habits, and getting rid of the bad habits. It also gives you good ideas on training stratigies, and how to make your own safe equipment from stuff around the house. Nice pictures too!

I am new to the sport of agility and this book really gives you the neccesary info not only to compete but also to find new ways to play around with your dog. Excellent information on obstacles descriptions and regulations. If you are a do-it-yourself type of person like me, the info is so complete that you can built the obstacles yourself based on the description given by the author. The only down side is the black and white photos. Great introductory book for the sport of agility. It covers all aspects in an easy to read way.

Edith Henderson in her book Home Landscape Companion reflects her desire to help homeowners bring beauty and balance to their home landscapes through sensitive and well-planned design. She navigates the reader through the seasons and by the months of the year. Each season has a role or function; "in winter months we are setting the stage for the living, fascinating show we shall see in spring" while the "spring intoxicates us with its beauty". Each month has direction and purpose; tasks and chores are assigned--some months are for digging, others for planting while some intend reflection and study. Throughout the book Edith displays her knowledge and reflects her intense respect for the plant world. She states, "plants must look comfortable where they are asked to grow" while noting that "plants have different personalities". Edith hopes her reader will make a connection with their landscapes, study its historical roots, understand the vegetation, sketch, observe, and plan accordingly. Her advice is practical--"you get what you pay for" and her directions are clear and simple--"plant seeds for summer color now!" The photographs in this book are breath taking. You really get a feel for the magnificence of the country. There are photos of places seldom mentioned in text books. Although the pictures are themselves a learning experience it only begins to crack open the country. Turning to the text, opens up even more information. Absolutely stunning!

Excellent Primer on Bankruptcy.......2007-07-21

I am an experienced lawyer and regularly read books (usually one-volume treatises) outside my practice area. Comprehensive books on bankruptcy are hard to find, and I purchased Blum's for lack of any alternative. The book is well organized, clearly written, and contains a lot of information. Even the attempts at humor are generally successful.

To offer some unsolicited advice to law students, I don't recommend using this or any supplementary texts in your courses. Stick with the casebook and other materials the instructor assigns. It may seem as if this requires more effort to learn the subject than is warranted, but you won't regret it. You'll never have the time once you start working to reread and think about cases that you have while in school. That 3 years may seem like a long time, but if you take it seriously you will benefit significantly throughout your career. It is surprising how often I encounter exprienced lawyers who are ignorant of matters I learned in law school (now long past) and still remember.

If you are taking an introductory course in Bankruptcy, get a copy of this book - And use it! If your course also includes Chapter 11 Reorganizations, I would also recommend that you get a copy of Chapter Chapter 11 Business Reorganizations: For Business Leaders, Accountants And Lawyers. They are useful before exams. But I recommend getting them at the start of the semester.

The author did a good job organizing the information in this book.

I would also recommend Surviving Financial Disasters by Tiffany R. Love which comes with a CD ROM and actual sample court documents from someone who has been there and done that. Also tells what to expect after you filed your papers.

An amazing journey into the past..........2002-08-06

As a child of the seventies, I know not of the turbulent times that so many lived through during the War. To hear in Hanna's own words the pain of discrimination, and being labelled as subhuman, and to hear the sadness, fear and longing for her true love Hans (who she can no longer associate with as he is a Christian, she a Jewish descendant)...to hear these things in her own words from that time, transported me to that time in history. I almost felt as if I was there, sharing in her pain and not knowing the uncertain future...even though I knew what history had brought, and I was indeed using my will and hope for it not to happen (even though I knew War would be there, as well as the persecution of so many innocent people). I wished I could erase history...but from reading this story, I hope many people will learn from it. I learned that strength and faith, can see us through many hard times.

This book was an amazing journey and I feel richer for hearing Hanna's words.
