I originally borrowed this book from the library, and decided to purchase a copy of my own, to mark up. I am going to Florida this month, so I will find out how true, relevant and current all of the information is.

As a travel planner, it gave me a lot of information I needed, in one central place, and I value that.

If nothing else, it is worth a trip to the library. If you like it - you can purchase a copy of your own!

This book is one of the only available books that I have found that talks about tillandsai in a way which is comprehensive to the layman. It describes the needs of airplants in an easy to read format. Futher, this book gives excellent historical information on the discovery of Tillandsia. The most amazing quality though are the hundreds of stunning color photographs. Overall an excellent book.

Jack Lopez has crafted a series of essays that speak more to the human condition than to the latino condition. For anyone who has grown up in America, let alone southern California, this is a collection that speaks volumes. There is an emotional tug in each piece that requires the reader to stop, go back a few sentences and then read again. At times funny, sad, and hopeless, this is a major work.

A remarkable collection.......1998-07-30

In these remarkable personal essays Lopez is son, brother, father, husband and friend; the human condition (and within it the "Latino condition") is inseparable from family and friends, for without them we have nothing. For Lopez, as one critic has pointed out, surfing is a powerful metaphor for staying alive and being true to yourself in a society where identities are so easily washed away. Lopez's quiet compassion, insight and honesty manage to make more meaningful thunder than many of the trendier, louder essayists writing about the American scene today; and anyone who likes the work of Mary Helen Ponce, Ilan Stavans and Richard Rodriguez (or for that matter Joan Didion and Truman Capote) should try this book, and, if they like it, to make the effort to track down Lopez's fiction, which has appeared in these excellent Latino short story anthologies: MIRRORS BENEATH THE EARTH, PIECES OF THE HEART, IGUANA DREAMS, MUY MACHO and CURRENTS FROM THE DANCING RIVE! This book depicts the best from collections of early Native American Pueblo silverwork. The photographs allow the reader to identify key characteristic features of traditional Native American jewelry. The informative verbal descriptions do not insult the reader nor the makers. There are few books that portray the early Southwest jewelry as well as this one.

A good one for the tatting library.......2006-01-12

This book has some great basic patterns. It's always a good standard to go back to when I need a quick pattern for something. The patterns are written long-hand, but are fairly easy to follow. The majority of the patterns are easy enough for beginner to intermediate tatters. Advanced tatters can modify the patterns to eliminate some cutting and tying. Overall a very good book.

Lovely tatting patterns.......2005-07-01

This book is an absolute delight containing a huge selection of patterns by Monica Hahn. There are angels, bells, Christmas trees, snowflakes, doilies, bookmarks, collars, all sorts of things. Most are worked and shown in white, probably to facilitate the black and white photography used in the book, and the patterns are imaginative and interesting to work.

The patterns are written in longhand with no diagrams but the pattern writing language is clear and consistent. This is a book which will suit someone who has learnt the basics (although as usual with the Dover Publications books basic instructions are provided) and who wants a good range of patterns to work with. It represents good value for money and will provide many hours of tatting pleasure.

Christmas Angels and Other Tatting Patterns.......2003-02-16

I'm just learning how to tat and found these patterns easy to follow. I'm working my way through the book with plans to make them all. I haven't learned to use a shuttle yet and am doing them with the needle tatting method and have been able to adapt the patterns without too much difficulty.

This is the first tating bok I ever bought, and I have been quite disappointed with the patterns.
There's some angles and some snowflakes, but a lot of the patterns are "one shuttle" works and I just can't make those look right because I can somehow never get the "bits of thread between rings" to be the same length.
However the book has some very interesting patterns in it, like a 3d butterfly which I really want to make but since I have no clue of the english crocheting terms and those would be necessary to finish the butterfly I'm a little stuck *g*

Anyway. if you're able to do "one shuttle work" really well and like stars and collars (3 of those in the book) this book might be just the thing for you :-)

I find the directions are difficult to follow. The patterns are pretty and useful. It takes extreme concentration to determine just what the author is asking when joining. I had to make 4 angels until I got it right which is not the case in other patterns I have followed.

A collection of erotica written by women who were tired of porn written by and for men. Primarily vanilla in nature, these stories give us a wide range of fantasies which many women may be able to relate to. The focus is on the plot and the characters, the chance for women to make their voices heard. However, those voice sometimes seem more interested in making a political and social statement than expressing sensuality. Not the best choice to turn one on but a good choice to investigate what real women may fantasize about.

The real pleasure in this book is not so much the artist synopses, which are brief, but in the diversity of artists described.

For instance, I've been a Jobim listener for years, and found his section a little lacking, but... I had never heard of Oumou Sangare, and what a joy it was when I went out and bought one of her albums.

An Engaging Visit With Major World Music Stars.......1999-03-29

Years ago, when I lived in L.A., I listened to Schnabel's radio show "Morning Becomes Eclectic" and loved the vast range of music from all over the world that he played. It's great to see him pull his interviews together and fashion a handsome and compelling book such as this one, an engaging read. It is not the "Bible of world music" as one of the reviews elsewhere suggests, as the chapters on each artist are very brief and there are only a few dozen artists in the book. But what is there is superbly done and quite informative. Adding to another review below, I would say that this book is an excellent addition to one's "world music" library, a nice complement to books such as "World Music: The Rough Guide," "Planet Drum," and The Brazilian Sound."

Pleasing Introduction to World Music.......1999-03-29

Schnabel's book has beautiful graphics and is well presented in an easy-to-read format. It is a good introduction to the major figures of world music and fills us in a little on their lives and cultural contexts. My other favorite world music book is "The Brazilian Sound" (Temple University Press, 1998), which I also purchased through amazon.com.

This book is biled as the bible for "World Music" written by the man that first coined the phrase. Tom is a KCRW disk jockey in Santa Monica, CA and is the authority on this wonderful music.

I simply love'd that guy, his type as a human is unike. Göran Schild Wrote in his Travel book, meeting "Agi" Niska in Ålborg in Jylland Denmark,it was in 1948, he called him a "gentleman smugler", I road Agi's book the first time in 1987, in svedish, I vant to read it again.
